NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

Do non-Nintendo jpn developed games sell in the US? I mean games actually developed in jpn, not just published by a Japanese company. In 2016 we have how many 1 million+ sellers? Dark Souls 3, Final Fantasy xv and ??? Any handheld games?

I don't know how much of a driver non-nintendo Japanese developed full priced games are going to be going forwards, either handheld or console.

I'd love to know the state of the industry there. Do they have a San Fransisco or Sillicon Valley? Does the gov support the industry like in Quebec? Are there many young people with a burning ambition to break into the industry? Are game devs respected?

It takes far fewer big games to be cut to account for a whole bunch of smaller games getting cut.

Which "big games" have been cut? MGS has come out in September so it doesn't count yet. Bioshock was only a 4m seller. The big games like COD/Madden/GTA and the others that can sell 10M+ are still intact. Others like Batman/Witcher/Far Cry have increased their sales. There's not many new IPs but it seems there's a high percentage of multimillion sellers(Watchdogs, Destiny, Titanfall, Dying Light, Bloodborne).

Somehow, I really doubt NX will get a stream of releases from SE and many Japanese companies even if it's a handheld. Maybe a few ports at the start then it will wane down.

I don't want to be negative but it's starting to look like the Wii U all over again. Non-GAF people who I know don't really talk about it and don't even know what NX is.

I agree. The NX will need to get 3rd party support if it wants to be even mentioned alongside the PS4 or Xbox1. If not it's just business as usual. Early support from Japanese devs that just wane over time as the system fails to pick up interest.

If it has a handheld form factor, Japan will support it in mass since that's where the domestic gaming market for Japan is other than mobile. The whole reason for NX seemingly having both a handheld and a console form factor from rumors is so that that their console gets the same third-party support that the handheld gets. The difference here is if NX will be in its own little world or if games on the NX can be crossported with the PS4 and vice-versa.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate sold 1 million in the West, not including Japanese sales. Many other Non-Nintendo Japanese games do sell well in the West though not to that extent.

They tend to sell moderately well on handheld. Occasionally quite well (see Bravely Default). So yea there's a market for them.

3rd party Japanese games tend to do well on 3DS in the west generally. The only mega-hit now is probably Monster Hunter (over 1m NA+EU) but the smaller games from Atlus, Bandai Namco, Square Enix, etc, seem to hit or exceed their targets and in some cases (like SMT or EO) franchises are even outperfoming what they did on PS2/DS.

PS4 vs. XB1 sales are dead even tonight here so far.

Lunch. Halfway mark on the first shift.

Largely the same boat as cornbread, although the Tomb Raider bundles are basically a no go. Such a waste of space. Ugh.

Like my comment yesterday, we're running out of the inventory of the cheaper bundles, as that's why people are here.

They seem to be pretty close on Amazon too, PS4 is #1 and #14, while Xbox is #7 and #10.

That it not pretty close though, PS4 is definetly leading on Amazon (COD and Star Wars bundles are also still selling although not as much as Uncharted bundle...and some people in the other thread said that the Uncharted bundle wasn't going to sell well because old games were packaged in totally ignoring the 299$ price...).

Even if NX gets loaded with Japanese support (which it probably will), it's not going to do jack for Western markets. The 3rd party Japanese franchises with any real pull in the West off the top of my head are Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Souls, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, DBZ, and Street Fighter. Even if all those franchises end up on NX (which is doubtful), none of them would be exclusive.

The importance of 3rd party Japanese games for Western markets is largely overstated.

Looks like you were right about best buy getting the raw end with the deal.

To be fair, the same could be said for the XB1 only replace 'Japan' with 'the US & UK' for where the system is a hit. It should have become very obvious by this point that Nintendo & Xbox are both now basically regulated to regional gaming brands while PlayStation is a global gaming brand.

That makes zero sense, for both sides.

TR is probably the worse handled tome exclusive in a while. I doubt either side is happy with the reaction to the whole deal or the sales TR must be having.

Hey Kagari, any info from SE recently about this?

What's the demand looking like? Are both selling well?

That's the genius plan from Microsoft PR guys, Xbox One outsold by PS4 because was supply constrained.
I am pretty sure he is talking about MS here.
Yeah, there's that, but the price points for MS's bundles are also all over the place too. Well, not literally all over the place, but they aren't all at the same great really low 'black friday' special bundle price. All the bundles are discounted, obviously, but that's still not making some of the bundles that much more attractive in terms of them already being so expensive on their own.

And they didn't really send us a whole lot more of re-stock on the ones that *will* be their cheaper options to go head to head with those uncharted bundles. Which, honestly, those are the ones the customers are asking about. The ones where it is the cheapest price, that's what people care most about on Black Friday.

LOW COST MAN. I NEED THEM DOLLARS OFF. Even if you can do some inventive analysis and probably get a better arrangement with a specific bundle otherwise.

(shrug)

We'll see. I'm going to be fucking exhausted.

Yeah, well, they didn't send us any huge shipments. We're not *under* supplied, but they didn't exactly stuff our shelves with the 'good stuff'...

While Sony sent us a fuck ton of the Uncharted bundles. They set that price for the weekend, so it's not meant to only last for the doors opening, so to speak.

What's the demand looking like? Are both selling well?

Definitely high demand for both, they're both selling well - but there's the catch, it's the cheap bundles people want. We're seeing some people opt for other options in certain circumstances, but that feels like it is an afterthought. (The star wars bundles, for example, are still selling, but with nowhere near the velocity of the uncharted bundles despite comparative value).

Anyway. Break's over. I probably won't post again until lunch on my shift tomorrow, sorry guys. I'm gonna go home and pass right the hell out after this one at 4am, and then be back at noon tomorrow.

I just want to see both break a million on the NPD this month. Are you seeing the same sales velocity for either that we saw last year for the Unity bundle?

You're a warrior, buddy. Keep your head down.

Interesting, seems like consumers are pretty price conscious this Black Friday. $299 does seem like the sweet spot for the mainstream after all.

Sony basically did the same thing that Microsoft last year with Assassin's Creed bundle.

Not good news for EA.

But yeah, people are very price sensitive in BF, with both consoles for $299 they don't want to pay $50 more.

Black Friday is the height of price conscious consumer shopping so if course it'll be the cheapest bundles that will sell by the boatload. MS knows this which is why they stocked enough Unity bundles for the entire damn year last year. That's why it's so baffling that they are flooding shelves with so many bundles above bargain price this time. Clearly they can't take another profit hit like they did last year.

Yup. I stated this months ago. That this year I'm sure MS was going to focus on profits and their margins. It was clear last year was about install base. Had they not made those moves last year they'd be losing terribly.

This year is all about profits for them though.

A hot mess that still sold 500,000 within a month

That makes zero sense, for both sides.

Doesn't change the fact that SE barely put any effort into the port, which is what the comment was about.

And the TR thing is just what I was told. If you paid attention the marketing message definitely softened after SE went ahead and announced the Pc/PS4 dates so it lines up in that circumstance.

Will be curious to see if the SW bundles get any uplift during the EpVII release week.

Of that I have no doubt. Certain am I that consumers will again awaken to the temptation of the force.

Yeah, I have not doubt the Star Wars bundle will pick up pace. I also believe it is going to sell really well for this November NPD as well, with preorders from previous months built in.

We have to remember the Star Wars movie launches a week before Xmas. They will pick up the advertising for the movie and the bundle, starting today, and that is going to be a mass media onslaught for the rest of the year, and into the first couple of months next year.

Any idea why the exclusivity timing changed? I remember it being stated by many that it would release on PS4 early on in 2016 but as we now know the exclusivity was moved all the way to Fall 2016 for PS4. Why did it increase 6+ months? A year seeks like a really long time for a bid budget game to have a staggered release nowadays.

I thought it was confirmed that the PC release was early 2016 while the PS4 release would be around a year after the XB1 version?

Or am I misremembering?

I'm not sure what exactly happened there but I can try to ask. All I know is originally it was going to go up against Uncharted 4 in the Spring but then stuff changed? I'll see what I can dig up.

Sure. If you can find anything out that helps clarify the reasoning for the delay that'd be great. Just really surprised me when they announced it was a full year. I'm not convinced it will be a compelling choice for PS4 owners a year from now with the sort if titles slated to release next fall. Some incredibly strong competition there just like this year. It seems like they are sending out to die again for some bizarre reason. This whole deal has just turned out to be a nightmare for CD, SE and the Tomb Raider IP IMO.

You can bet your hat they will try to sell it at full price with all the DLC or something too. lol

If they try and do that they are smoking rocks. It's damn near insulting if they do that but the XB1 and PC versions will be available for significantly less

Considering 305k console's sold halo month, it's safe to say most Halo fans owned a X1.

As I said in my previous post, I would agree if Halo 5 sold similar to Halo 3 but it didn't. Xbox 360 did a little bit over 500K during the month that Halo 3 launched and Halo 3 sold far more than Halo 5 did in the same time frame.

I'm expecting $39.99 with whatever DLC gets released, slap on the title "Complete Edition" and call it a day.

Well at least that would be a hell of a lot better than trying to charge full price for it but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they do try.
