Where are people reading licenses from PS3 won't carry over?

The digital PS2 games available on PS3 are called by Sony as "PS2 classics".

Granted, we do not know if, perhaps, having a license for a PS2 classic will warrant us to a download of a, say, "PS2 classic on PS4" for free, and this is all a giant misunderstanding due to very, very poor wording.

But the wording is kind of on the wall, no?

Well, wait a minute. I suppose it just says that your original PS2 classics are incompatible with the PS4, not that they wouldn't give you the PS4 counterpart in the circumstances a ps4 PS2 classic comes out, that you owned on PS3. Just don't expect all your PS2 digitals to go live. Not sure how to read it.

Yep, that's my last bastion of hope :p

There was no way that backwards compat was coming. I think we should have realized that. Ports/emulation were what they were going to be the whole way through. Sony is in control now and they're going to try to get that money and MS getting BC on XB1 wasn't going to change that.

They are more than welcome to prove me wrong. Please do it.

This crushes me.

But I'm insanely surprised even PS2 Classics aren't supported.

WTF, Sony?
The justification is because this game are upscaled and had trophy support. The trophy suport alone would mean that someone had to manually add those trophy list to the game. There's no way they can retroactively make all the previous ps2 classics to have trophies.

Although I was kinda hoping they make a whole new category like "ps2 classics hd" or something so the old ps2 classics without upres and trophy still work. :(

Welp....looks like my PS2 Library stays where it is at, but hey this does give an opportunity for some games I may have missed...I guess....ugh...why

It is possible the PS2 Classics are restricted by license issues, like PS1 classics are restricted from playing on Vita, for example.

So, it is (in that case) probably a license problem, not a technical one.

Yeah, that's apparently how the XBO B/C stuff works. The licensing for games has become very specific in terms of platform, so they ned to renegotiate so the deals include the XBO along with the 360.

Following that logic, all PS2 classics are probably licensed strictly to be sold on PS3.

lol, what a waste of time. who cares about some dripfeed of games starting from scratch?

I didn't realistically expect disc support, but no support for PS2 games bought on PS3? lmao. no wonder they've been so quiet with the details; embarrassing.

Which YouTube channel was it on?

The 'PlayStation' channel shows as last being active 4+ hours ago, which is longer than I would expect if this was found now.

I was at least hoping that we could stick in our discs and get a discounted upgrade. But whatever, I'll take what I can get

The emulator probably still requires developers to do work on the base game. So it's probably why the PS3 versions don't transfer over.

This is not backward compatibility. This is just a cheaper and quicker way to make remasters.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, as long as it's more convenient than the usual remaster.

Why does everyone act like the PS2 games they bought digital on PS3 no longer work now that they can be bought on PS4? If you already bought a game, don't rebuy it, just play it like you have been...So much fake outrage lol

I expected that discs would not be supported, but not allowing PS2 classics is just pathetic.
Of course you can't expect all PS2 Classics to have trophy support etc. as that would require each and every game to be individually programmed to support them etc.
However the lack of basic compatibility with PS2 classics to have them emulated is just really, really poor.

If this turns out to be all we're getting in regards to PS2 games on PS4 then I'm incredibly disappointed. Not even worth my time.

Sony has released the following games with brand new graphics, improvements, and going way, WAY beyond simply adding trophies for completely free to previous buyers:

- Flow
- Flower
- Journey
- Unfinished Swan
- Sound Shapes
- Escape Plan

And quite a few more, across the PS3 -> Vita, Vita -> PS4, and PS4 -> Vita versions. All of those involved a ton of work beyond creating a trophy list and running it through what I presume is their emulation algorithm.

They are the ones that created the (reasonable! Amazing! Well-received!) expectations that buying a license in one console entitles us to using it in newer consoles with improvements.

This can't rightly be called backwards compatibility.
Which makes sense, since it has never been called that.

Never bought a PS2 Classic on PS3 and haven't owned a PS2 disc in 10 years, so PS2 games on psn with trophies sounds good to me. Sucks for folks who won't be able to carry over games they've already paid for though.

They NEED to clarify whether PS2 classics we already bought on PS3 have licenses that allow crossbuy with the PS4 equivalent. This is make or break Sony.

I never expected discs, but at the very least allow those of us who have participated in your digital account system to take advantage of those fucking features the same way we do on your other platforms!

If not and your counting "enhanced with trophies and enhanced resolution/FPS support" as a complete different game then.....fuck me.

Wow... and people gave Nintendo crap for making people pay an upgrade fee for VC titles they previously bought on Wii to Wii U. Hopefully Sony does the same
but I'm not holding my breath

In other news, sweet! Dark Cloud is coming to PS4!

wow.....I have the xenosaga trilogy and would have to rebuy all 3 of they released......wow.....just wow.....Fuck you sony

You mean game discs from 10 years & 2 consoles ago won't be compatible?! FUCK SONY.

Seriously though people should be happy we are getting this at all. Rebuying sucks but there are plenty of games I'd shell out for. At least there will be an option.

The weird thing is that we now have to wait until PSX for clarification, this is a leak after all.

Expected discs to be excluded. Did not expect PS3-downloadable PS2 games to be excluded. If the licenses don't carry over, it'll be Nintendo levels of stupidity, but Sony's had a decent track record on this kind of thing before so I guess we'll see.

Probably because they built a more sophisticated emulator this time around and they added trophies. I'm less worried about buying my PS2 games again than I am about waiting for certain ones to come back. Will SMT nocturne be available at launch? probably not... At least I get to try Dark Cloud for the first time....

Yes and they'd be right to say PS3 Flower is incompatible with the PS4 console

It's not 'fake' outrage. I specifically bought the GTA trilogy last week because I thought I'd be able to play them emulated on my PS4.
Sure I'm at least partly to blame for not waiting to find out exactly what Sony were going to be offering, but I'm still really disappointed.
As for being dismissive of everyone by calling it 'fake' outrage, you're just being an asshole.

I have to admit the tears here are pretty hilarious. What were you expecting? Businesses aren't your friends.

Well Sony can just fuck off now. I wanted my EE chip or at least BC software emulation at a future date. I'm glad my 60 GB Phat PS3 is still working but this doesn't help that I can't play My PS2 collection ;_;

Buy all the game you already own, now with trophies!

Please be excited. Can't wait till they just start giving us these instead of new PS4 games for Plus.
