Sony leaks Dark Cloud PS2 for PS4

This is probably just a generic marker. Afterall it says ps2 classics are incompatible with ps4, after being a ps2 classic running on ps4 (well atleast one can hope so)

This.

The feature hasn't even been announced yet beyond them confirming the emulator exists with Star Wars so there might even still be an equivalent of cross-buy for digital and this is just a generic protection thing since it seems unlikely every classic would go up on day 1 since they have to add trophies and whatever other checking they'll probably do to make sure the HD emu is working right before putting them up.

Hmmm...guess I'm in the minority here (and the UC4 new character thread lol) that thinks this is awesome news? I'm sorry guys, but the whole playing older games doesn't cut it, I never played any of the ps2 classics even on my PS3, most games look terrible and I would much rather have things remastered and buy stuff over.

This is honestly a case where I think GAF and maybe forums in general is completely out of touch with more mainstream gamers. People are going back playing crash bandicoot, twisted metal black, etc...I mean, I would much rather have remakes and HD emulation.

Agreed. HD emulation like they are apparently doing is best.

It is possible the PS2 Classics are restricted by license issues, like PS1 classics are restricted from playing on Vita, for example.

So, it is (in that case) probably a license problem, not a technical one.

That was my guess. In any case I don't see the need to get so angry about this, for the last two years there were no ps2 games on the ps4. I wish it had disc support but maybe they will add that in at some point if it's possible.

Also how about waiting until PSX?

I just hope Sony provides entire library of PS2. There are lots of great PS2 games I would like to revisit. I'm glad they are offering upgraded visuals and trophy support.
Youve got more chance of Sony putting in support for XB1 games than you have of them putting more than 2% of the PS2's entire library on the store.

This will be something they bring out for the 20th Anniversary then promptly forget about forever.

Luckily i still have an original PS2, playing games on them using a component cable look solid enough, but this is a letdown

Heh, it's alright for games that supported 480p, but a lot of them didn't. I'm dying for a solution to play PS2 games with decent image quality on my HDTV... (I tried PCSX2 on my PC and it ran pretty badly).

What are you guys thinking regarding time-frame? Will we see this before Christmas, or do you think it's a 2016-thing?

Can we all use this thread to be hype at the fact that
Dark Cloud 1 and 2 are among the first PS2 Classics to run on the PS4
Can we talk about these games please?
I've heard about them but never got to playthem.
Rogue Galaxy was one of my fav. RPGs on the PS2, and this being from Level 5, well it'll be interesting to see how their earlier games played which eventually lead to RG.

As long as the games are released in quick succession and the library isn't as garbage as the one on the PS3, I'm good. I haven't bought any PS2 classics yet, so I'm not really affected. I knew pure PS2 backwards compatibility was simply too good to be true given how Sony have such a huge lead on the competition.

Best wishes.

Even if you have the digital game on PS3 you can't use it on PS4?

Yeah no thanks Sony. Not interested in your "buy the same game over and over on different platforms" money-grabbing scheme.

I mean trophies are going to be something that might push me over but not supporting existing discs or digital PS2 games from PS3 just sucks. I already wrote off the PS2 games on PS3 when save data couldn't be brought over.

Man, talk about a greedy blunder by Sony.

This is what happens when you're the leader in a marketplace; you shit on your customers and tell them to pay up or move along.

Bad form, PlayStation.

Rogue Galaxy actually ripped a majority of its systems straight from Dark Cloud 2. It wasn't even subtle. The gameplay, the crafting, the upgrading. Almost everything is the same. Except the quality.

Play them back to back and you'll see for yourself

Whatever. They are compatible, they are DVD's and CD's that WILL work in a Blu-Ray drive. Sony needs to "MAKE" it "COMPATIBLE" to answer to the XBone's backwards compatibility. I'm about to sell my 360 and get a XBone cause M$ made it work.

Maaaan PSX could be amazeballs.

I know there's no discs but....to be honest apart from me owning SMT3 Nocturne via US PSN I'm not sure I own any other PS2 games still...so it sucks, but not really for me at the moment :(

Hardly unexpected tho.

This is my first post (after joining a year ago today). I just want to say that if this is true, I am highly, highly disappointed.
Especially those of us who have been with PlayStation since the PS1 days. I am fairly confident that no at Sony will read this, but if they are really humble by the support the gaming community has shown them, the least they could do is give us this.

As long the price is fair(10~15$) i'm okay with this, just worried about the game selection cause the PS2 Classics lacks so many well know games.

I do not care about sony charging for these again. I will buy full price, since Level-5 deserves every cent.

So happy! I might even beat
Pendragon now

They're obviously not going to get the entire library but you think they're just going to forget about it afterwards? lol, I think you're thinking of Microsoft and their oXbox emulation. It's been 8 years since Sony launched PS1 Classics and they're still releasing high profile PS1 games on the PSN. Hell, they announced one of them at PSX just last year.

Anyway, I'd be pretty surprised if Sony suddenly ditched cross-buy given how great they've been with it over the last few years. So I'm guessing we'll see a repeat of the PSP Store thread, with the initial reactions coming across like hilarious over-reactions from lunatics in hindsight. Either way, PSX is less than a day and a half away, have some patience, people.

lollllllllll

no disc support

they're not gonna let us use ps1 discs when support is added either are they

AND they won't let you use the digital copies you already bought

lmfao what a trainwreck

How is it a trainwreck?

We are getting something we didn't have and weren't expecting.

Be disappointed sure, but your comments make you sound like a troll or sook.

I really liked Dark Cloud 2 but didn't play as much of the first one. I found the second one to be extremely charming, I love that art style.

That description reads like a remaster rather than just a port...though the last sentence suggest port (as a download).

Yeah, emulation is a remaster. I can go and do the same thing with my own DC disc and PCSX2.

If they gave us the option to use our OWN discs. I'd be more than willing to also buy some digital versions to send support their way. But they won't be getting squat from me.
Even if they fix the framerate issues that occurred occasionally with DC1 and the resolution changes when the load got too high.

Because it's a waste of their time. Do you know how many games are on the PS2?

3874

Good luck seeing 1/10th of that available to buy.

They allowed disc usage with PS1 emulation on PS3 as it was all software emulation as well.

It certainly suggests in some ways that they have to hack their way to get games to run at all because the PS4 isn't strong enough. But the results from the current pool of games would suggest otherwise. Unless they were riddled with Gamehacks to get to that point. The framerate increase certainly suggests so.

Lmao this thread.

Would've loved a new Dark Cloud. Hopefully this is paving the way for a sequel.

I definitely think it's possible. The fact that they are picking these two as some of the first games feels like they're interested in seeing the response.

I'd also like to see Rogue Galaxy too.

How so definitive? I must be dreaming that I saw more new cross-buy games recently...they must do them the least of the three companies...oh wait.

Even some late ports have carried into cross buy digitally like Journey and Flower. They easily could have charged for Journey again given all those awards it got.

They're obviously not going to get the entire library but you think they're just going to forget about it afterwards? lol, I think you're thinking of Microsoft and their oXbox emulation. PS3 has about 1/10th available already - granted if this is starting from scratch it will take time to get there.

If PS2 Classics won't work, Sony had better have a plan to let people who own games off the catalogue get a free download pass... Otherwise this could look bad for them.

There is no guarantee the games that were on ps2 classics will even be on the PS4. Let alone with adding trophies and upscaling. Only about 10% were worth downloading anyway.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
Could it just be that unless the code is altered in some way the PS2-classic isn't compatible and its up to the developer/publisher to make that altercation? No need to spew hatred before this is officially announced? Or why do gamers need to be so angry?

Does it have to be coded on a game-by-game basis or can an emulator do it across every game?
Not sure abut increased resolution, but someone had to manually type in the trophies for the games. Yoh can't do trophies across every game since every game will have their own distinct trophies

Welp... back to PCSX2...

I've been thinking about this.

Realistically, I doubt PS2 disc emulation/back compat would have sold any more consoles, and I doubt the the lack of disc/digital back compat would sell any less consoles.

Sure, it'd be nice for those who already bought a PS4 or already planning to get a PS4, but does Sony actually think they need to do anything like this? It's pretty apparent how much of a success PS4's going to be all gen and if they're going to do it, might as well make money doing it.

It might piss some people off, but I don't think it'll keep them away.

Decided to jump out of this thread when it first popped up due to the outrage over the potential PS2 Classics blunder. Thought maybe the discussion would move to the actual game since there's already a thread for the other issue. My mistake.

I'm looking forward to finally playing Dark Cloud. I've heard really good things about both games in the series and really liked the Level-5 games I have played (Rogue Galaxy and Ni no Kuni).
What are you guys thinking regarding time-frame? Will we see this before Christmas, or do you think it's a 2016-thing?
I'll be optimistic and say before Christmas but I could see it coming out early next year too.

What's there to talk about, though? DC1 was an okay launch period title that featured a neat depth of field effect for early 3D and had an equally neat town-building mechanic that surrounded a dull action-RPG with a ridiculously onerous thirst meter and a slightly less burdensome weapon durability meter. DC2 may not have been a tremendous success in making the leap beyond this first game to establish itself as a classic, IMO, but it was a much better one, crafting system notwithstanding. Such a weird choice to make for an early title in their new list of emulations, IMO, and a poor one. If they're starting off with oldass PS2 titles, where's Sky Odyssey, one of their very best, most overlooked launch period titles?

Mighty, I disagree completely with your judgment of Dark Cloud and it being a bad choice to bring over but when you said:

I felt like we were blood brothers. I motherfuckin love that game. Made a video of it less than a year ago for my channel.

RetroBoots: Sky Odyssey

If someone from Sony is reading this thread, go get activision to agree to this shit.

Hey, lots of people have their favorites, but I seriously regretted buying DC1 after a few days, but LOVED and cherished the atmosphere and playability of SO. It is, IMO, the greatest flight game on console. I mean, aside from Pilotwings 64, this is one of those original console games that makes you feel the flight model. I don't think Activision needs to be involved because I'm sure their publishing rights ended way back as this is actually a Sony game. Shouldn't be an issue to have Sony bring it back, with a perfect 60fps performance this time. The soundtrack is moody and adventurous as fuck...probably the best PS2 title from its first year or so, IMO.

I think we can be relatively confident that the worst case scenario is what we're getting. The only argument that I could struggle to see, is that we aren't getting backward compatibility in the traditional sense and that there is some development required to get the titles operating on PS4.

I just hope we have a decent lineup. PS2 has several RPGs I'd love to revisit.

I think you answered your own question. I'd rather pay for competent ports than get sub-par ports for free.
