Sony leaks Dark Cloud PS2 for PS4

None of that has anything to do with discs themselves not working. I feel like people don't actually understand anything about optical media in this thread sometimes - hint: if you think a PS4 is incapable of reading a PS2 disc, you are VERY wrong.
It's not like your average joe can prove that the PS4 architecture can handle proper PS2 emulation on a 1:1 scale so whether it can read the disc or not is irrelevant.

I can understand TWO-generations-deep discs not working on the PS4. They didn't slam it full of old hardware like the PS3, and I'm happy about that because I really didn't want to pay $599 for a new console.

I'd happily rebuy a lot of great PS2 games I never got around to playing. Even some of the best of that era that I did play.

Pie in the sky to think that it would have worked any other way... unless you can play Original Xbox games on Xbox One or GameCube games on Wii U with just their original discs? (I honestly don't know if you can)

I cant believe that people who own PS2 and PS2 games are able to defend this move. I would love to play the PS2 games in HD/1080p but Im not going to pay again for the ''same'' game.

Not a chance!

If the PS Classics for PS3 or Vita are not compatible with PS4, they should ALL be cross-buy!

Totally disrespectful to charge those digital games AGAIN!

That made sense because without the PS2 parts the PS3 emulation of PS2 games wouldn't have been at an acceptable standard across a wide enough range of games. They were technically limited. That shouldn't be the case any more so Sony deciding not to allow it is a deliberate decision to prevent people from playing their discs.

And again I'm not that bothered by Discs. It's the Classics that are important. What's your stance on them? I'm reserving full judgement until an official announcement, but if this is true I feel it does nothing to foster consumer trust and I'd feel inclined to never purchase anything from PSN again despite having a large library of PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP and Vita games

If the emulation is providing a decent visual difference between the old game and now I have no problem paying to play my favorites again. The amount of games i would actually really want to sit down and play through again is a handful though.

The classics is BS. I totally agree with you on that.

100% chance that they made new emulator instead of reusing the same emulator from PS3. PSP, Vita and PS3 use the same PS1 emulator, that's why the purchases carry over. And again, this doesn't use the same emulator from the PS2 classics. Still a shitty that purchases won't carry over though. They could definitely do it but $$$ and all that. Maybe we could beg specific publishers to allow it?

um. what? If the PS4 couldn't emulate the PS2 this thread wouldn't exist. It doesn't have to be able to play the game off of the disc, XBONE bc doesn't do that either, it just needs to recognize the disc is in the drive and let you run the downloaded version.

Of course the emulator is new, PS3 and PS4 are very different, but it's also going to be the same for every ps2 game they just need to wrap it around the iso. So it's an up front cost but it's not like they're investing a bunch of R&D per release. This isn't a money losing proposition since they're selling them on the store whether old purchases or discs carry over or not - people that want to play them that don't own them still have to buy them. We've already seen with the 360 BC on Xbox One that publishers are happy to be able to keep selling their older digital goods just like they can on Steam.

Doing it this way (if it turns out to be true) is basically TELLING your consumers that buying digitally from you is going to be shitty going forward too, it doesn't instill trust in your user base about the security of their purchases. It's the kind of misinformed methodology we've come to expect from Nintendo, and even they one upped it on the Wii U already.

If you can remember a just shy of a decade ago when digital games started coming out an often cited concern was people wondering what would happen to their 360 Arcade titles when the console generation ended. It was widely hoped at thet ime that the manufacturers wouldn't be complete assholes and would find a way to keep your library moving forward as best they reasonably can - just like I own all of my Steam games and they don't just get invalidated every few years. Now we're in a situation where MS has clearly said 'hey, these work as long as we legally can still offer the game' and that is going to be seen as the minimum standard here. Disc based PS2 games would be a nice touch but it's a given they won't carry forward forever, but digital purchases? That's simply anti-consumer at this point.

Not a fan of buying games I already own again. In some rare cases I will, specially if it revives the online community for the game, but in most cases I'm not a fan of it.

Since Ive never played Dark Cloud though, I may get it if it has a good story. Never knew much about it to be honest.
And this is how they SHOULD be viewing the revenue for this kind of thing - Hey, ps2 game is BC and people seem to like it, I'll drop a fiver and check it out! Who cares if other people got it 'free' by buying it 5 years ago.

It doesn't.

Any second opinions? :p

For real though? Thats primarily the reason I play JRPG games so ill sit out if its story isnt that great.

Thanks for the reply

Dark Cloud 2/Chronicle has a pretty decent plot, but Dark Cloud's is very basic. Also, it's not so much a JRPG as a simple version of 3D Zeldas, but with a village-building aspect as a secondary gameplay aspect.

It would be completely unacceptable if already purchased PS2 Classics (on PS3) were not made available as new emulated downloads to those purchasers under the new system.

I lol at the fact that people get mad because they need to pay to play a old game that they own in the new console.

If you don't want to pay, use your old console... problem solved.

Maybe SONY will offer a discount program, but no one was ever promised that their PS2 Classics on PS3 would work on the PS4. This is technically something grander than PS2 Classics with the enhancements. I own a ton of PS2 games, and I'm not complaining. I would rather have 1080P, Shareplay, and Trophies more than non-enhanced disc compatibility with my PS2 games.

But that's me.

That doesn't fly in the digital age. Imagine if everyone's apps needed to be repurchased on iOS/Google Play every time they upgraded or switched to a new phone. There'd be outcry and it simply wouldn't and doesn't happen. In cases of technical or physical limitations it's fair enough, but otherwise it's just poor practise

The village building part is what made Dark Could shine.
IIRC you explore dungeons and find orbs that contain buildings and then later you have a huge space where you can place them freely. At the end of an level you'd have a full blown town where there was only a barren wasteland in the beginning.
Adding to the fun was that most village people would prefer certain spots to be in so you had to talk to everyone to find out.

And now just combine this with a fun combat and there it is.... Amazing game. It didn't need a good story.

On a side note: I didn't really dig DC2 because it expanded the mechanics of part 1 waaaaaayyyy to much. Level 5 should have kept it simpler.

The story is pretty simple. Some evil entity broke off your village into pieces (literally).
You now have to enter multi level dungeon to collect those pieces and rebuild them simcity style.

If you properly build the village based on the villager preferences, you get better rewards.

Really disappointing, especially after Microsoft's stance with 360 BC on XB1. Feels like Sony is trying to burn through all their goodwill they earned these past few years.
Lol this is hilarious. How much of the ps4 audience do you think cares about the ability to put ps2 or ps1 disc in their console? You guys need to get out of your bubble. The burning of goodwill is 5k gamers on GAF who gave an absurd gamer collection. This is why entitlement is thrown around so much. Who can honestly be upset about new features? I don't use Psnow, but its a great option for some. And I can still appreciate it.

Yea ima have to agree its ok to get upset you can't use your two generation old discs, but tgis whole sony losing goodwill is really pathetic man we still have no confirmation at all

You craze bro...DC2 was amazing! And superior in every way IMO. I want HD emulation Sony! Don't listen to these silly gamers that hold on to there collection for decades and want all the VAlUES. Half the people up in arms would play like 5 games from there collection for the rest of the Gen. B/C is so overrated, please enhance these games so they are easier to play. You guys don't know what your asking for. Ps1/Ps2 classics look terrible on Ps3.

I honestly think its just to match what MS did. Go back and play some stuff on ps3, it looks like ass lol. only thing that ages well is Rpgs, and they still looks like ass, but your playing for story etc...

But I mean if complaining works and we get more features out of it. Then yeah whatever ill help that cause I guess.

Sony!! Let us play PS1 & Ps2 classics we've already bought please!!! I have all FF games, Crash series, twisted metal 2 and SF titles I would love to play on ps4. Do the right thing $ony!

Let's see what I remember about Dark Cloud...

Something about an evil genie.

You're off-brand Link and have to restore towns Soul Blazer style except once you have all the pieces, there's a specific "100% perfect" way you have to arrange the pieces so you get a reward.

You can attack with a frozen fish.

I thought the storyline was pretty good. I honestly feel like the building aspects and soundtrack made up for the nitpicks other people tend to complain about.

I still have my copy to this day and play it. I always loved going in the dungeons to try and get a new piece of the town to help rebuild it.

I didn't expect disc support, but you have to rebuy games even you own as PS2 Classic on PS3/Vita?

Fucking bullshit, Sony better buckle on this because this is terrible.

The original Dark Cloud is amazing. It's one of my favorite games of all time.

I want a Dark Cloud 3 so badly. :(

I'm so hyped for PlayStation Experience.

Okay, I get it with the discs, but the PS2 Classics omission is kinda stupid. They better at least give folks a discount on the PS4 version if you already own it.

I imagine when they announce them they say "These are not PS Classics, we've gone back and reworked each to run better than they ever have before, with 1080p resolution and even trophies!"

It definitely sucks, I bought a handful of PS1 games on sale just in case (don't own a PS3). Not the end of the world, and continuing to compare this to XB1 backwards compatibility is really reaching

Though Twisted Metal Black was in the ratings leaked a few months ago and I'll buy that all day errday. Maybe they'll even have the online version! (they probably won't :( )

I don't remember much about Dark Cloud (the first one) but I did try to catch some specific fish for hours, and hours, and hours. It was so awesome after I got it.

having disc compatibility was probably a pipe dream, but the fact that so many people are bummed by this news just shows how much people really wanted this and how important it is to so many people

Yeah, no. Not buying those PS2 classics again that I already own. Sorry Sony.

I knew we weren't going to get disc support though, would have been cool, specially since Xbox One's BC its got going for it.

I didn't even know people thought disc support would be a thing. I'm also not rebuying my PS2 games unfortunately. Doesn't make sense to me.

A bit dsappointed though not surprised since I expected this.

The reason why I would love to play my PS2 games on my PS4 is for convenience; One console instead of two out and interacting with the PS4's (in my opinion) better and far more online oriented interface. I don't care about graphical improvements to old games that much. I just want the ability to quickly play the old games that I enjoy that I already have/own.
