Tetsuya Takahashi: I would want a 3rd Xenoblade to be more like the first again

http://gonintendo.com/stories/24813...e-future-of-the-xenoblade-series-continuing-t

GR: After two big releases and the New Nintendo 3DS remake, Xenoblade has become a major Nintendo franchise. Where would you like to take the series next, and are there already plans to move it forward?

TT: While Xenoblade Chronicles was a true story-driven JRPG, we took a rather different approach with Xenoblade Chronicles X. You could say it doesn't really feel like a typical JRPG: what really sets it apart from other JRPGs is that the game world - the planet Mira - is really vast. I've heard that some Japanese users who played Xenoblade Chronicles X said they enjoyed a more story-driven type of game. So if we have the opportunity to make another game in the series, I'd like to made another typical JRPG-style game like Xenoblade Chronicles again.

Personally I just want something not Xenoblade next time. Either a truly different new IP (XCX really wasn't a new IP), or a revival of something prior, like Xenosaga.

I need another story-driven RPG like Xenoblade Chronicles with a better combat system and the world and art direction of Monolith. It will be glorious.

We need Xenogears - we need to remind why that game was so amazing story-wise, and why it needs proper battle system and proper second disc.

As someone who loved the first game but who's interest in the 2nd has cooled dramatically, this sounds perfect. I'd prefer a new IP though.

Yall want that more Xenosaga? You're out of your minds...

Xenoblade Chronciles was great.

Xenosaga was awesome!

xenosaga is owned by namco, so it's not exactly possible now that Monolith belongs to Nintendo

I know, but even today they still work together and even with the characters with Project X Zone 2 and KOS-MOS is in it.

It'd just have to be Nintendo-exclusive if they do work on a new Xenosaga game. :p

Here's the full interview.

Some other highlights:
Here there's a custom avatar instead of a preset character (as with Shulk in Xenoblade Chronicles). How did this change the scriptwriting and narrative processes? And how did you make sure the main character and supporting cast had lots of personality?

In RPG development, the sections that cost the most are the cut scenes and events in the main story. Since this is Monolith Soft's first high-definition open world title, we decided to focus less on these and instead shift our resources into improving the quality of the gameplay - which is most important - especially the "hack and slash" combat. This is the reason that we decided to make the player's character an avatar without a real personality. In exchange, we focused on designing lots of quests, and added a lot of supporting characters related to these. Many people in the development team were involved with these supporting characters, and I think we have been able to give them all strong, distinct personalities.
Xenoblade has had a big impact on the market in Japan, and there is also expectation building in Europe. Which game elements do you think are responsible for the global appeal of this game, and for the appeal of the Xenoblade series as a whole?

I imagine a large part of the appeal is in this being the first open-world RPG from Japan. I also think it's really meaningful that this is a middle tier title, rather than a AAA title. The Xenoblade series has always had a different genre for each game, with the previous game being fantasy, and now turning to science fiction. I hope we will be able to continue the series like this, exploring lots of different settings, rather than being confined to a specific genre.

First game is pretty great stuff. I haven't played the second at all and don't really plan to but a 3rd that is more like the first sounds great!

You keep making games I love, Takahashi, and I'll keep buying them. No matter how story focused they are. <3

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Why would they go back to Xenosaga now that Takahashi has proven they can still make their own Xeno games without Namco? Apart from any involvement with a remaster I don't see why they would go back to it now.

How about they make something new next time? Crazy idea, I know.

Like, not an RPG or something? It's not like the Xeno games are that similar. Neither are their RPGs but that's where their strength is. I mean, we've see what they did outside of that... I could make a Disaster pun now...

Been a fan since Xenogears; keep doing what you're doing Takahashi. Also, Nintendo/Monolith deserve more kudos for releasing an absolutely mammoth open-world RPG without issues Day 1 on consoles in 2015.

While I understand the general sentiment, the justification (that's what players seem to want) raises my eyebrows a little. This particular argument has great potential of going wrong. See: Dark Souls 2 getting some backlash.

I'd love that.

Both Xenoblade and Xenoblade X are great in their own ways and combining those things would likely make an incredible game.

As long as they keep the big robots.

Disaster is underrated. I mean something outside of Xeno for a change, like Baten Kaitos, Soma Bringer, Disaster.. Monolith Soft have made plenty of game outside of that IP, well, they did in the past, not anymore. They're a one trick dev nowadays.

Errr... don't agree with the wording since, like I said, the Xeno games them-selves aren't really the same anymore. But I think I understand your point, and that really comes down to Nintendo for the most part.

It's quite good Nintendo let's them continue making these games at all considering they have no intention of giving them any real marketing push. At the same time it's obvious at this point that they have an arrangement that makes this work, and that's by having Monolith work on first party projects where they need the assistance. That means that Yasuyuki Honne and especially those in Kyoto who could have worked on a different game are busy helping Nintendo.

Takahashi wrote a massive story bible for Xenoblade Chronicles X with only a section of it getting used.

His other comments on the matter make it sound like the lesser focus on the main story wasn't really a decision he wanted to make. He essentially said that between aspects like budgeting, X being the studio's first HD game, X being the studio's first open world game, and Monolith Soft's Tokyo studio being a relatively small team for such a large game, priorities ended up being shifted for the sake of the gameplay quality.

From the last time Takahashi commented on the game's story:
“Being several years behind others in the development of an HD title and taking into account Monolith Soft’s company size, there are just some thing that we could not achieve, which couldn’t be helped, but in order to move on towards the next step, there was no avoiding this. And that is the truth.”

It sounds like now that X is wrapped up, the studio might have an easier time focusing on a larger main story for their next game.

I really wish they hadn't gone with the name Xenoblade because it makes people think this isn't a new IP. It was originally called Monado: Beginning of the World. Other than the name it has zero connections to Xenosaga. Xenoblade is a completely separate thing - there is no "Xeno" franchise. I'd love to see Monolith tackle a different Nintendo IP.

He's talking about Xenoblade X, not Monado. And the Xeno franchise does exist, it's Takahashi's legacy at this point.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
As long as NX has a normal ass controller, i'll buy one for this game.
