Just Cause 3 PC performance thread

come on man, beating arkham knight in performance/visual return is hardly an accomplishment. mad max was also a retooled ps360 title that kind of got stuck in development hell so its also an uphill climb.

I said Mad Max because that game was praised for its performance and rightly so, it does run well on a very wide spectrum of hardware, I would agree that it is not exactly unexpected considering how "last-gen" it can look.

Just Cause 3 however is a different case where I was genuinely surprised to find out how well my game ran with everything save for shadows cranked up to the max.
Of course that does not mean the game makes the absolute most of their targeted range of PC hardware, for all I know there may be significant performance gains possible but as things stand I find no reason to complain pertaining to performance, and to reiterate this game looks fantastic.

My only gripe is the flickering really, I don't know when it will be fixed. It's not game breaking but certainly stains the otherwise beautiful scenery.

To be honest it is very common in PC threads to find people blowing things completely out of proportion and using terms that do not apply to the situation, there are issues with this PC version for sure (that damn flickering) but overall I think it is very well made.

In my opinion this game has a better visuals to performance ratio than Arkham Knight or Mad Max.

Lol. I should hope so, and no it doesnt

TBH I haven't really noticed any of the frame drops or slow down so far from what I've played, the only reason I've even noticed it dropping into the 40s during big explosions for a second or two is due to Steam's FPS counter.

I've put 34 hours into it so far and I can't say I'm impressed with the performance to be honest, even considering what it's doing. Framerate drops I can expect when the action steps up but even when I'm just looking at the scenery, or just driving around, or other scenarios where not much is happening, it just doesn't feel consistent. I also get an odd hitch or pause sometimes at the moment when something explodes or a large structure begins crumbling, but only at that precise moment; large structures in the process of crumbling to pieces don't seem to affect the framerate much. Lowering settings - lower than I have already lowered them to - doesn't seem to make any real difference, and neither does locking it to 30fps, which feels horrible whatever method I use. I guess the game just doesn't work that well on older hardware, which is the real litmus test (I have i7-3930k, 16GB RAM, GTX 690). I'm not going to call it unplayable because if it was I wouldn't have put this much time into it (and with respect to the people calling it unplayable, that is a very subjective thing), but it's not been the most amazing experience either. It is a really fun game, but hampered by sporadic performance (on my end at least).

I'm not expecting miracles from the developers, but I do hope we do get a maintenance patch or two to at least make performance feel a bit more consistent (and SLI support!)

only half of your 690 is being used. the game doesnt support sli

Finally getting close to good performance, a lot I have you guys to thank for. I'm getting almost flawlessly 60fps now except in extreme situations. However I still have huge issues with flickering textures (which is due to Global Illumination it seems), really hope they get a performance patch done soon. :(

My setup:
i5 3570k 3.40GHz
16 GB RAM
GTX970

Code:
Anisotropic: 16x (through Nvidia control panel, NOT the game)
Anti-aliasing: SMAA
Bokeh Depth of Field: Off
Display mode: Full-screen
Edge Fade: Off
Global Illumination: On (Will try to turn this off to solve flickering)
LOD Factor: High
Motion Blur: Off
Resolution: 1920x1080
Screen Space Reflections: On
Shadow Quality: High
SSAO: On
Texture Quality: Very High
Water Detail: Very High
Water Tessellation: On
Nvidia Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-aliasing: Off

I'm also running the game as an administrator after reading that tip on the Steam forums.

I have the exact same setup as you, and I've had to lower my settings down to med/low to even get it to run without lag spiking every 10 seconds. I realize that my 690 is basically a single 680 without SLI support, but this game runs like ass for what it is. It's a really fun game, but jebus, it shouldn't run THIS bad.

Guys, I start to believe that this game is CPU and not GPU bound (yeah probably not shocking news to most of you).
Today I upgraded to the Gigabyte 980 G1. It's a decent card and I still can't get steady 60fps. The thing is whenever I get drops my CPU load goes up on my i5 3570k to 80%+ (4.3ghz, 16gb DDR3 2400).

An i3 + 750ti (oc) seems to be enough to hit locked 30 fps (@1080p), but an i5 and a GTX 980 (both decently overclocked) aren't enough to hit locked 60fps. I am getting everything from high 90s down to 40ish fps.

Overall it's playable and the drops are more or less rare (and more likely in certain areas) but it is still a bit irritating especially when it drops below 50 (a sudden drops from 60 down to 47 ish is very noticeable).

And yes I know my CPU isn't the best and outdated. Just saying that the game is indeed probably more CPU bound then most benchmarks seem to indicate. I'd really like to change my CPU to a similar clocked i7 3770k just to test performance in the same areas, but that would be a bit insane.

Playing with infinite beacon and no cool down mods already made the game significantly better (design wise, not performance wise).
I hope a patch for performance will get here soon, so i can keep playing.

stupid question, where do I get that?

I am a little surprised that no one has mentioned this yet but I hope this is helpful info. and applies in the immediate future for everyone through future game updates/patches...

On an Xbox One Elite console (with the game installed on the hybrid-SSD drive), I notice only minimal frame rate drops, but more importantly, the load times are 5-15 seconds max. (never any longer).

Love this game! It's so much more fun than FC4, AC, etc.

Let's hope that this performance applies to anyone playing this game on consoles very soon...

Just a few weeks back, you could trade in a Day One X1 console for $250 and get all the crap you would buy at the time anyway.....The Elite Controller (150) + Free Game (60) + Free Extra Controller (60). Basically, it was just a simple "you get paid $20 for showing up in store" upgrade for the best possible gaming experience outside of a PC. We're finally seeing the results now in games as well (apparently), on top of the f-ing awesome Elite controller. Good times! Especially for the early adopters and multiple console guys/gals.

You'll probably get more responses in the OT, as this thread is just for PC performance issues/reports.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Steam Cloud support has been rendered inert. Considering it would have taken about just as much effort to point Steam Cloud to the correct directory, I don't hold much hope that Avalanche/Squeenix will do so.

I7@4790@4.0 GHz@16gb ram@ 970 sli, although I'm aware there is no sli support. Put about 16 hours in and with about 3 crashes within the 16 hours. Now, it won't even let me boot up, it logs in to server and then starts loading and then crashes. Does anyone have any suggestions? New PC user here also btw. Thanks in advance.

Finally finished with Fallout 4 and was excited to jump into JC3 but man it does not run well on my old ass pc. i7 860 @ 3.6, 8gb, GTX 680 playing at 1080. I only played about 20-30 minutes but its hovering in the high 20's almost all the time and jumping all over the place when I'm just walking around. Tried turning things down/off and it doesn't really seem to change much at all. Also getting a strange ghosting effect during cutscenes where its almost like duplicates of characters as they move, weird. Time to pour over the thread and see if there's anything I can do to get this stable or If I'll just have to wait until I build a new PC.

If memory serves, that a side-effect of the top AA option (SMAA with Temporal pass). Dropping AA down a notch should solve that one.

Did you overclock your 970 over factory settings? The game is very GPU OC unfriendly (in my case) and it crashed from time to time while loading. The strange thing is/was that my OC was stable in other games and benchmarks (tested for several hours to find out the maximum OC without having to increase voltage). But some games are more prone to overclocking then other, so that's nothing new.
Lowering my oc by a bit fixed the crashing in JC3, so... maybe that's it.

If changing graphical settings doesn't help then probably your CPU is hitting its limit here. Your GPU should be good enough to hit 30fps (a 750ti is, so...). You could try to overclock your cpu a bit further (200mhz?) and see if you can get stable 30 then.
For example my fps drop down from 80s down to 40s when CPU load goes up over 85~% while I am using the wingsuit and moving the camera in certain areas (i5@4.3 and a gtx980).

Ah, I was playing with the AA settings and that was on for a bit so that's probably it.

If none of the other tricks do anything for me, I'll try to push it a bit.

I posted this in the OT but a little more relevant here. Just found this in the Steam community:

AN UPDATE TO OUR PLAYERS
Sorry for the radio silence - we've just been super busy trying to solve as many reported issues as possible. We hope to have some positive information next week particularly about improving load times and online leaderboard issues as well as a bunch of crash bugs.

Thanks again for all your amazing support!

Has anyone found a way to get rid of the awful jaggies in this game? the FXAA and SMAA options just don't cut it.

I'm just wondering if this game is proving to me how amazing g sync is. I'm maxxed out at 1440p 2600k with a titan x and I can't perceive any fps drops

G-sync made a massive difference in this game for me as well. The frame rate was very jumpy at 3440x1440 on my 980 Ti when it dropped into the low 50s and felt sluggish. Completely gone with G-Sync, the game feels silky smooth 100% of the time now.

SMAA 2TX is still busted.
The Flickering is still there.

No problems aside from that, performs great and looks excellent.
Oh and loading times are not improved at all, still like 1 whole minute to load the game off an SSD.

The game still stutters and has an inconsistent framerate sadly. Going to wait for the next one. Tried moving around and also attacking a base but gave up thanks to the performance. This is on a PC with a stock 4770K, stock GTX 680 2gb, and 8GB of ram, at 1920x1080.

Forgot to post an update. I was mistaken on my OC. it was set to 3.4 (don't remember when I adjusted it last). Bumped it up to 3.7 and am using full screen borderless along with nVidia's adaptive vsync with ingame disabled and the game is vastly improved. Still get huge drops after challenges but other than that its rarely under 30 for any significant time.

If a game doesn't launch with SLI support, it's not coming.

There are a lot of games that don't launch is SLI support that get it later on. FO4 is the most recent example. I expect it to get support later on.

Did anybody else get an 122MB update over steam today?

I'm not sure what it did.
