Imagine a game of that caliber on a system that people want.
I'd randomly say around 15 million on a wii level system

Splatoon on Wii would sold 25-30 million, which is almost Mario Kart Wii level ( 37 million).
You should realize that Splatoon is selling better than Mario Kart 8 worldwide. Not Japan.

The highest I would be willing to go is 20mil for now. Kart used to be even with Smash but on the Wii, more of the casual audience picked up kart than smash. On a system not called Wii U I think Splatoon's casual adoption rate would be better than smash, but I'm not sure about MK levels.

As for worldwide sales, do we know what mk8s first November brought sales to? It and Splatoon may be close...but I feel mk8 is higher.

[WIU] Splatoon # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥6.156) - 35.256 / 861.197 (+48%)
[WIU] Super Mario Maker # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.09.10} (¥6.156) - 32.155 / 442.588 (+73%)

Amazing.

[PS4] Bloodborne: Complete Edition <Bloodborne \ Bloodborne: The Old Hunters> <RPG> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2015.12.03} (¥6.372) - 20.455 / NEW

That's low even if the "franchise" is quite niche.

I know but it shows the market for Bloodborne is limited. Very few new gamers purchased the title.

I feel like people always miss the best one. It should be Animal Flopping: amiibomb Floptival.

While we're on the subject, I'm not surprised HHD is the only asset-reusing spin-off doing well. It's the only one that makes sense with regards to what the franchise is about, with Triforce being a miss and Floptival a colossal misfire on every level.

I don't get why everyone thinks Triforce is a miss. It's selling slightly better than Four Swords Adventures did. It's honestly generally an accessible implementation of FSA, which I think is exactly what they were going for. Yes I do think having 2 player local would have been fantastic, but that really seems to be the only big misstep imo. I do agree HHD made the most sense. I also would guess they spent the most time on that one.

The game was given away with ps4 for months and the used market should have a bunch of copies too.

Buying either used or a digital code + dlc is probably cheaper than getting that version. The same was happening in EU this week when that version was released.

I don't think you should read too much into that release imo.

Most of my friends bought it digi....

No but seriously, i would imagine the DLC on it's own was big seller, since most of the fans have the game already

Pretty much this. I actually think 20k+ is a good number for this. I would expect 10k-15k for it based on the criterias that you mentioned.

Umm I need to see the receipts.

I would like to see some data to backup this claim.

Second quarter comparation:

Mario Kart 8 = 670,000
Splatoon = 800,000

And Splatoon will easy outsell the third quarter of Mario Kart 8 which is 1,280,000. Splatoon should ship 1.6-1.7 million this quarter.

EDIT: here the graph:

The first shipment for Mario Kart 8 is a lot higher compared to Splatoon though, so it makes some sense that the 2nd shipment is smaller. Mario Kart 8 also passed 5 million copies in May or something. I dont think Splatoon will be anywhere close to that number within its first year. But when it comes to weekly sales right now between the two titles, who knows.

Splatoon won't beat Mario kart 8 lifetime. The reason are a bigger launch, and one year of vantage.

But launch allinied, they are gonna be super close. Mario Kart 8 has surpassed 5 million back in March 2015. I expect Splatoon to surpass 5 million in June / September 2016.

Anyway, lifetime, Mario Kart 8 will sell over 8 million, and Splatoon over 6 million.

I don't think that proves that the sell trough for Splatoon was higher during last quarter than for MK8 during the same timeframe. MK8 had a much bigger launch quarter shipment so it didn't need as big restock next quarter as surprise hit like Splatoon.

clearly if he could access to NPD data he would not say that ;)

It doesn't have anywhere near the same staying power in European charts either. Hard to believe it would be selling more than MK8 outside of Japan.

I doubt that. Too little sales data to give any indication of such big sales numbers being possible. At least we should get a update in the next quarter report from Nintendo, hopefully.

JULY TO SEPTEMBER OFFICIAL SALES

Japan sales (+digital, famitsu):
Splatoon : 350k
Mario Kart: 150k

USA sales (NPD):
Splatoon: 150k ( withouth September)
Mario Kart: 250k

Splatoon US+JP = 500k (withouth Sep in US) > Mario Kart 8 US + JP ( 400k )

Since there is a MASSIVE gap of >100k in US+JP, and this gap does not include September sales of Splatoon, yeeeeeeeeeeeah...

I think we can say withouth doubt Splatoon has sold more than Mario Kart 8.

I know what the numbers are, and i'm sure of what i say.
By end of year, Splatoon will be over 4 million shipped. ( 3.5 million minimum)

And this is only 16% less than MK8 launch allinied.

I don't have references for UE market, but in proportion I think Japan was the place (counting US and UE) in which Splatoon did better considering the population and the units sold
It was a huge success but no way it can be bigger than Mario Kart, maybe in the future if N will wisely handle the brand

you really compare a game released 12 months ago with another released 6 months ago ?

I was thinking you were talking about cumulative sales, not monthly comparison

breaking news : Super Mario Maker is selling more than Super Mario 3D World during June/November 2015 !!!

Ins't the Splatoon bundle expensive or something?

as in, isn't there a "better" bundle to buy? Or so i heard

If you're planning to buy Super Mario Maker and Splatoon these dates, buying the SMM bundle, it makes it ¥1.000 cheaper.

Super Mario Maker Bundle Set - ¥33.000
Splatoon Bundle Set - ¥34.000

Software:
Splatoon - ¥5.700
Super Mario Maker - ¥5.700

Splatoon Bundle Set is only better if you have 0 interest purchasing Super Mario Maker.

What are the numbers?

Mario Kart sales ( sell in + digital):

Q1 - 2,820,000 / NEW
Q2 - 670,000 / 3,490,000
Q3 - 1,280,000 / 4,770,000
Q4 - 340,000 / 5,110,000
Q5 - 320,000 / 5,430,000
Q6 - 440,000 / 5,870,000

Splatoon sales ( sell in + digital ):
Q1 - 1,620,000 / NEW
Q2 - 800,000 / 2,420,000

...What this quarter is 900k for Mario Kart 8 and 1.6 million for Splatoon ( and to be honest, i think i'm conservate).

So, i expect by Quarter 3 lifetime sales, a launch allinied of Splatoon at 4.02 million, and Mario Kart at 4.77 million.
Lifetime, i predict Mario Kart 8 at > 8 million, and Splatoon at > 6 million.

Well, this my prediction...

If you want Mario maker & Splatoon, I think it's cheaper to buy the mario Maker bundle and then splatoon separately.

Let's look at last week vs. this week, and assume 100% of the Wii Us sold were either Splatoon or Mario Maker bundles

Media Create
Week 48 = 23,823 (Sp) + 18,639 (MM) - 20,256 (Wii U) = 22,206
Week 49 = 35.256 (Sp) + 32.155 (MM) - 32.604 (Wii U) = 34,807

So about 12K rise in hardware, and 24K rise in software including likely bundled sales, so about 12K rise in software unbundled.

Also last year vs. this year
Week 49 2014
01./00. [WIU] Super Smash Bros. for Wii U # <FTG> (Nintendo) {2014.12.06} (¥7.776) - 227.527 / NEW
11./13. [WIU] Mario Kart 8 # <RCE> (Nintendo) {2014.05.29} (¥6.156) - 19.244 / 753.870 (+51%)
17./14. [WIU] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker <ADV> (Nintendo) {2014.11.13} (¥3.996) - 11.829 / 65.882 (-3%)

Week 49 2015
04./03. [WIU] Splatoon # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥6.156) - 35.256 / 861.197 (+48%)
05./04. [WIU] Super Mario Maker # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.09.10} (¥6.156) - 32.155 / 442.588 (+73%)
13./00. [WIU] Yo-Kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version # <ACT> (Level 5) {2015.12.05} (¥4.622) - 7.060 / NEW

Guys, let me bring something up that you are forgetting.
As a person who bought a Wii U with MK8 one of the major reasons I did was the promo they were running at the time in the US and Bundles(should have gotten Pikmin).
No doubt MK8 is bigger than Splatoon but that's not just because of the IP it's also the aggressive bundling since launch, two very high quality DLCs, additional content/patches they made and a free game in the US during launch.
If Splatoon had the same bundle at launch + free game it might have gotten a lot closer to MK8's launch.

amazing indeed :D

it would have done a slight better than WiiU w/o Splatoon

at least Vita didn't have just 10-15 games released in a whole year as WiiU had

Lol. Moor. You know that you can just praise Wii U performance when it does really well right.

Well without EU numbers it's impossible to say for sure (just going by chart positions Splatoon is not doing as well as MK8 did) but with that much of a gap with US+Japan I guess I have to give this to you =). Didn't realize that the gap was so wide in Japan despite being regular member of these threads lol.

in your dreams

nature proves that a mouse will always be eaten by a cat, you can't go against nature

Lol. Moor. You know that you can just praise Wii U performance when it does really well right.

I think it's not wrong saying that Minecraft saved Vita and Splatoon saved Wii U, as Vita has a solid weekly line-up while Wii U hasn't

I didnt say Splatoon is doing bad, it made a miracle cause anyone could have imagined how much it has been sold

so if you ask me what have would been Vita and Wii U sales w/o those games I would have replied what I replied
if you wanna sell hw games must be released every week

HOLY SHIT AT PAPER JAM

Could this kill the series? Both of them?

short answer: no

I'm beginning to think (at least for the M&L series) that the buying audience is fairly eduacted and not just moms picking up the game for their 6 year old or something.

I mean I always found it interesting that BiS did so much better than PiT when it was another M&L rpg on the same platform, a few years later. Isn't that kind of rare? It'd be like Galaxy 2 selling batter than Galaxy. The audience seems to be attuned to the quality of each entry and maybe felt BiS was a big jump. But I could be wrong.

now, I'm not saying Paper Jam is a bad game, but it doesn't seem to do enough to differentiate itself from DT like BiS did from PiT to make someone say "wow, i bought this m&L game 2 years ago, but I really want this one now!"

so in all, I feel like if the next M&L has a groundbreaking look or mechanics, it could do great numbers again.

as for PM? pfft, who knows about the audience. Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star sold great so they'll play anything. This wasn't a PM game though.

edit:
PiT and BiS also had 4 years between them so....um...that might matter more than what I posted lol
