Well I actuallly replaced 2 GTX 970s with 2 GTX 980tis a few months ago. I sold one of them in the GAF Buy Sell Trade thread but kept the other one for a back up but feel like it's being wasted in a box. It's a GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 Gaming and it's in perfect condition, only used for a few months, if you are interested. I sold the last one for $220 shipped.

I get what some of you are saying about modifier buttons on controllers, or using a single analog stick like a joystick, but at any given time on a HOTAS you can:

-Control throttle speed
-Use boosters
-Yaw
-Pitch
-Roll
-Laterally thrust
-Adjust PIPS
-Toggle FA on or off

All in the same moment. That being said, I know plenty of friends that use their DS4 and love it, so to each their own.

I'm doing all that with a Steam controller to :) that thing is amazing

It doesn't look bad. It looks unfinished. It's really obvious that the geometry is generated out of soft bumps that are vertically displaced. The overall impression is great, but due to lack of overhangs, texture variety, horizontally displaced details, sharp cracks or the likes, it also looks rather unspectacular, when you've seen a couple of dozen screenshots like it.
Let it gooo, let it gooooooo,

Just watch between 48:00 and 49:30 and soak it all in. It's not changing any time soon. It's all about performance--you don't seem to understand how costly your desired terrain is. They're on the knife edge with vertical displacement alone.

I'm sorry you can't take the planets seriously, but that's more a problem with your unrealistic expectations than it is with Frontier's methods. They're actually doing an amazing job within reasonable limitations.

I have to agree with Funky here, from everything I've seen the planets look spectacular, and I'm going to enjoy the hell out of driving around them. Some of the terrains are just jaw droppingly good, and the variations are awesome. I'm really looking forward to the volcanic planets later on in season 2 though.

I'm willing to bet several real dollars that's strictly a reference to the canned 3D meshes that represent rocks, meteorites, synth materials, etc. on the surface. I doubt they'll be using large additional meshes to represent the landforms you're looking for, as it would be very difficult to blend them so seamlessly as to veil the fact that they aren't part of the "natural" terrain formation as it were.

That said, they've made huge improvements to the terrain over the course of a few days, and I doubt neither their ability nor their creativity. It should only get better from here. Even so, there are much bigger issues to address than over-vertical surface features. Whatever bits of math are responsible for crater distribution, for example, need some tuning. I've seen too many instances of neatly gridded craters already.

It' ambiguous, true. But he mentions displacement, which makes me doubt that he has additional meshes in mind. That could just mean a finer horizontal displacement up close though, so there's that. The horizontal diaplacement I'm talking about which wer're also seeing in Outerra has nothing to do with meshes, as far as I'm aware.

Still, they are aware that the details can improve. And I think they should be able to do quiet a bit more when they get around to it.

I'd rather they add depth to gameplay before overhanging mountains, but I'm just a simple man that way.

You'll be waiting until next year for more depth on freshly introduced systems if their track record so far is followed. It's pretty shitty. I really don't want a season of barebones features thrown on top of an already barebones game but that seems to be their design philosophy right now.

Yeah, that map just visualizes how barren their public roadmap for future is. We really have no idea what the rest of season 2 nor any other seasons will actually bring us. It's the only reason why I didn't splurge for the lifetime pass earlier this year.

That said though we do know a few general goals for the future that will fill those question marks someday, for instance:

- season 2 will include volcanic planet surfaces
- season 2 will include fighter bays
- season 2 MIGHT include multiplayer or NPC crews
- season 3 is likely to have atmospheric planets
- the Thargoids are coming someday, plus other alien races
- one of the future seasons will include first person mode and the players getting "legs"
- transporting passengers for money will be a thing someday

That's not true. Character builder and multicrew are coming in Season 2. They already shown concepts.

They announced multiplayer crews for season 2 and will have a rather hard time not delviering on it. ;) They said they would like to do NPC crews, but that is not an annoucement, therefore less dependable.

As for atmospheric planets in season 3. I'm not sooo sure here. There are of course atmospheric lifeless planets that might come, but I'd rather expect the big season 3 feature to be "space legs". On ships and in stations. Being able to walk around seems like a more natural progression before they add atmospheric and possibly Earth-like inhabited planets a season later.

I wouldn't be surprised if they introduced some form of basic passenger mission in season 2 either.

Their design philosophy is to get the entire skeleton in place before fully fleshing it out. Seems like the right way to go when there are so many interdependent systems to reconcile with each other in the background. Sure, each major bone needs SOME meat on it from the outset to warrant its introduction, but it's important to realize these pieces will be enriched as their supporting structures are added. I'd rather have an organically grown beast finished product a few years from now than some kind of Frankenstein creation of noticeably disparate parts. I want the most seamless and cohesive experience possible on a scale from meters to light years, and I'll be damned if FD aren't giving us just that. The "miles wide, inches deep" folks just come off impatient, ignorant, unrealistic, or any combination thereof. Fair enough, though. They probably think people like me are just overly trusting and optimistic.

And Burny, what he said isn't really ambiguous at all. They don't use displacement for the closest details--that's where the meshes are involved and why I mentioned them. I was just adding that they wouldn't be using meshes to "fake" the details you want any time soon, either. And realistically, any further displacement detail he could be referencing would likely be closer LOD steps with the existing methods, not entirely new methods that would require a fresh bottom-up rebuild. It wouldn't be as simple as "just add horizontal displacement!" I'm prepared to lodge my foot into my mouth when they rewrite all their terrain generation procedures to include super-fine details that will need twice the care and attention to ensure they result in natural-looking formations, let alone significant increases to processing requirements. Totally prepared. I don't see that happening at all, though. And we know for sure it isn't happening in any capacity in Horizons. What we see now is what we're getting, barring any additional texture/LOD wizardry like we've seen in the recent beta updates.

Anyway, I bought a Cutter in the beta last night and I really shouldn't have. It's already got me spoiled. I need some of that Dreams-Visions kind of money in the real game now.

He seems to be referring to using displacement in the "closest details", seeing as he refers to it saying "that might be something that comes in the long term". Whether that happenes at all or when and in what capacity remains to be seen.

As for them rewriting their terrain generation engine - in all likelyhood they wouldn't really have to rewrite it from the ground up, but extend it, which is what they'll have to do in the future anyway. In some two or three years we might have atmospheric planets, possibly Earth-likes, and maybe even EVA on them. If all goes well, we'll have some form of volcanos in Horizons, which means they'll even have to extend it this season.

The generation of the planet's global shape is actually really good. It's just the rendering of some of the more dramatic shapes and mountains closer up that doesn't live up to Outerra. Which is using the horizontal displacement for areas that have a certain steepness to them, not everywhere. I don't see anything technically preventing Frontier from adding something like that in the future.

The best reason I can come up with why it's not in (other not having the time and resources required), is actually that it might be pretty demanding to add another form of displacement, which even the least capable computers playing Horizons have to do in order for the terrain to be consistent in multiplayer.

More than likely, they just realize that this most recent graphics upgrade is WOWZERS LOOK AT THAT SHIT, BASED FD to 99.9% of us and are moving on with life with another detail pass coming later because that's just how this works.

I fell in love with the Cobra all over again, really. I initially got back into it to have a smaller ship for the sake of landing practically anywhere, but it's just so fast and capable otherwise that it's hard to leave it.

you might be onto something with this one

just broke 14mill, now im trying to figure out how to find a station that sells asp explorers, and how do i level up in my power so i can get the 200% exploration sale bonus to start exploring.

I dont like that theres a ton of question marks on there. I'd kinda like to know if there are at least one of those filled in for each year, as if to show that they do indeed have a 'master plan' to things we should expect to see. I mean, that only goes so many years out, how many years will this very game continue to be developed?

If they made the rest of the years more enticing and worth investing in, I'd drop a lifetime sub in a second because so far I'm loving this game even without Horizons and I'm sure it'd get more fun as the years go on.

what the fuck at the alphabet bobbleheads. and comic sans no less. i wonder if there has ever been a digital cosmetic less desired or desirable than that.

Cobra is the amaze.

Yeah, always amuses me when people are like "the most expensive ships are the end game!!!"

It's true to an extent, but sells the starting ships short. Viper and Cobra (and the Sidewinder, to an extent) are iconic to ED fans, IMO. Always good to go back to.

Cobra is my favorite ship in the game. I love the way it looks and I'm a sucker for speed. I'm also having a blast in the Courier. It's a fun little ship and the prettiest damn cockpit in the game.

Frontier probably knows what go in all those (or have ideas) question mark areas, they are question marks because they haven't revealed them yet.

okay so i found the ASP , bought it. (YAY) got a few of the modules down but i cant find all of them at that station...

heres my proposed ASP Explorer loadout, good? http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/03A4D...30k0k2i2f.Iw18WQ==.Aw18WQ==?bn=CS Star Hunter

You can search for components, multiple components at once in fact with that as well. Often you can find everything at a single station if you take the time to fill it out. It can take a lot of cross referencing but it's worth it.

You need the 3D distributor to boost away from interdictors on your return trip, especially with no defenses besides the shield. It's a small price to pay in jump range for safety.

Upgraded thrusters would help a lot on planets (ask me how I know), but will probably require an upgraded power plant, so your jump range will suffer slightly. Would help with the above scenario, though. Only recommended if you plan to visit planets often.

Also I've never REALLY needed a heat sink. YMMV. AFMUs alone could maybe cover your repair needs if you fly safely, and lighten you up a bit. Would be a nice offset to the thrusters' weight if you upgrade those.

okay went for the 3D distributor. which thrusters should i get instead of the 4D, the 5D?

okay so i could drop the heat sinks, what AFMU should I get, 1x class 5 or 2x class 3s?

I also heard i could disable shields to run cooler while fuel scooping, is that dangerous if i dont have heat sinks, or should i be okay?

EDIT: http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/03A4D...===.Aw18WQ==?bn=Cuban Legend's All Around ASP
here's what I added so far... im looking to make this an all around ASP, with the ability to also farm high res large ship bounties (with the help of friendly feds) so i added 2 medium thermic weapons and 4 small cannons. If I'd like to do trading route, i swapped the 6 slot's 6D fuel scoop to the 5 slot with a similar performing 5B fuel scoop(comes with a price hike), but with that I can fit a 64T cargo hold in the 6 slot.

everything seems okay... but when i match this loadout in game i get 12.30 MW deployed out of 12 MW available, it doesnt match the site's loadout perfectly. any ideas what im missing?

I think they added the alphabet bobbles in order for people to spell stuff out on their ship since there are so many bobblehead spots, but they are certainly kind of ugly. I do like the christmas tree, though I don't think I'll buy it.

Some would say Alpine Ursa or Cat Drow.
Keepo.png

I can still sell my Alpine Ursa set for $800 though. So someone likes it. Cat Drow...eww.

they aren't kind of ugly. they are completely ugly. they should have just finished the Power Play characters and called it a day for now.

Urgh... That alphabet is grating on the eyes. Might be popular with some streamers however.

I can't imagine why one would want to spell out a message for oneself.

You need to adjust your module priorities so when your hard points are deployed some modules are disabled. Set cargo hatch and fuel scoop to 2 and you should be fine. To test whether it's a problem just deploy your hard points and see if things shut down. with .3 difference, there's no doubt that your fine if you just lower fuel scoop and cargo hatch priority to 2.

I hit Alt+F10 in Solo and got that from the Frontier Developments/Elite Dangerous folder in pictures. Is that not the way to do it?
Alt-F10 is already 4x your rendering resolution. At 1440p, my Alt-screencaps are 10240x5760 and 168MB each... there really isn't a world where you should have to supersample your normal rendering resolution just to get a good screencap.

Yeah running the game at 4k natively gets an Alt+F10 screencap at 15360x8640
