What I mean is that Sony has been closing studios and reducing the number of employees in currently owned studios in the last 3 years.

That's all public knowledge.

Do Kojima games sell well enough without the MGS IP? That's a huge if in terms of outright buying a new studio.

A more conservative approach would be a partnership, which is what they've been focused on this generation for big console exclusives (FFVIIr, SFV, Shenmue 3)

It also mitigates risk.

Of course but we don't know much info here. Sony can make 3 game exclusive deal like Quantic Dream to minimize the cost, if they're brave to invest that lackluster Order 1886, I think they won't worry much about Kojima :3

This is the most logical move.

Are any of them Japanese? Or based in Japan? You'll quickly find most of the publishers you mentioned have deadlines to meet. No way will he have the same creative freedom and Money Sony will bankroll him with

Zenimax isn't japanese either and Mikami works for them.

And every single publisher has deadlines. Stop. Some give more leeway, that's it. WB is one of those. They delayed Batman AK a whole year. Let Avalanche remake Mad Max from scratch. Delayed Dying Light several times.

All of those games had hude budget (Kojima-like budgets) too.

I mean, i'm not disagreeing that Sony is great with that. Just that i wished he would go third-party. I don't really like any creators locked up to a single console, but if it's the only way for him to make games, that's ok.

I'd be in the dick
Kojima going anywhere else than Sony would be a huge surprise to me. Their partnership just makes so much sense. Kojima's fans are mostly on Playstation platforms, he puts product placement for Sony in his games, and Sony has a large interest in revitalizing Japanese console development. No other publisher makes more sense or would be willing to put up the funds to back him up.

And who pays the giant upfront costs of setting up this new studio?

Yes just what we needed, Kojima to go make only console games.
And GAF praises this.

After such a wonderful PC port that was MGS V.

That wonderful PC port was possible thanks to that wonderful new Fox Engine they created, said engine will be rotting at Konami.

What are you even talking about .
You think KZ SF , DC , Infamous , The order are not big AAA games.
How about the upcoming UC , GT sport , Horizon Sony ,GOW4 spends money on AAA games.

Your game list of shining PS4 exclusives isn't really the best indicator of really strong first party games. There is a difference between putting money towards games and putting out great first party games.

I agree with the other posters that it makes more sense for him to try and start up a new developer like Respawn or something of the ilk.

I don't think either big publisher will give him full creative freedom. He would likely be an adviser to a ton of other stuff.

If there is a company willing to give creative freedom and a big budget it is Sony. Excited to see what the future holds for Kojima regardless, but Sony seems like a perfect fit to enable Kojima to be as wild as he wants

I feel like going with Sony, and NOT going independent is a pretty bad move.

I can't see why ANYONE would prefer this besides for fanboy list wars.

But it's his life, I'll buy his games regardless lol
It's a shame we won't be getting great PC ports like Mgsv or Xbox gamers won't get to play his gems.

I doubt Kojima is solely responsible for this.
Like really the soon-to-be-janitors at Konami deserve that praise.

This is great news, I would prefer someplace like Sega, Capcom or even Bamco or TK but they don't have the funds to make something worthy of Kojima's ambition so this is the least bad solution imo.

Is the guy responsible for ZoE still cleaning bathroom at Konami T.T?

Good to hear. Not too surprising either given Sony's general strategy this generation. Seems like it would be a good fit

In term of willingness to fund high production value weird game, I can't think of a publisher better than sony, except maybe Nintendo? But I don't have a Nintendo console anymore = =

Sony have also been increasing their employees in other, well performing studios. How can Sony make a deal with one person, they would still need to pony up a team. Kojima doesn't own a team right now and he doesn't have the money to create one without investment.

Literally 100% my thought as well.

Awesome. Great. Amazing. Incredible.

Not happy if this is true.

And before anyone says "would you rather not have him make games at all?", Kojima would've gotten hired fucking anywhere.

I think it's partly because Sony is known to give developers more freedom in development compared to big multiplatform publishers. At least in the past. I mean who else would be still funding The Last Guardian?

Sony has been a big proponent at pushing out titles that are very different and ambitious. Gravity Rush, Horizon Zero Dawn, Until Dawn, Tearaway, Dream all come to mind. They don't mind delays also since they're in the lead.
