Literally 100% my thought as well.

Awesome. Great. Amazing. Incredible.

Not happy if this is true.

And before anyone says "would you rather not have him make games at all?", Kojima would've gotten hired fucking anywhere.

And if he got hired 'anywhere', what do you think he'd get to make? The titles they are currently working on? Kojima screams of someone who has been wanting to create a new IP for some time now. Heck, much of the features they explored for FOX engine scream 'non-traditional Metal Gear', then they slapped as much Metal Gear Solid stuff into the game, likely so they stood a chance at recouping budget.

The truth is, without him forming his own studio & getting a project greenlit by a publisher like Sony, we'd never see a 'Kojima' style game ever again.

That wonderful PC port was possible thanks to that wonderful new Fox Engine they created, said engine will be rotting at Konami.

Said (multiplatform) engine will never exist at SCE because he will make games destined for Playstation only.

Hell I think someone suggested Zenimax like Shinji Mikami. I would even love to see him going to Platinum since they are on explosive growth.

Anything is better than locking himself to a userbase. But that's my opinion.

Love Kojima, whatever you make of the story of MGS4/5, he is one talented guy, a new series from him could be amazing

That's one studio, their marquee studio.

But they shuttered the Wipeout devs, had layoffs at Santa Monica, and staff reductions at Evolution.

Santa Monica had a game get canned, layoffs are only natural after that.

Nothing indicates that SCE is going into cheap mode, everything indicates that one game that was horribly bloated and over budget got canceled.

My god nothing is confirmed and people are already freaking about Kojima going exclusive, even when everyone and their mom knew it was a very likely possibility due to the decade(s) long relationship with Sony.

Agreed. I can't think of a reason why Sony would be better than going independent, other than fanboy bragging rights.

Because they'll give him the resources he needs to make the game he wants to make and they are very open to creative, off the wall type concepts.

I feel like going with Sony, and NOT going independent is a pretty bad move.

I can't see why ANYONE would prefer this besides for fanboy list wars.

But it's his life, I'll buy his games regardless lol
It's a shame we won't be getting great PC ports like Mgsv or Xbox gamers won't get to play his gems.

The problem with going independent is money and resources. A publisher like Sony solves both problems.

Surprised he doesn't seem to be going down the independent route, I thought that would have been the route he took back in.

Good catch for Sony if true.

Console exclusivity would be terrible for a game that someone the calibre of Kojima is likely to create. I don't see why so many are viewing that as a positive when the only beneficiary is a company, not the people who love video games.

What about his former colleagues ?
What about the plans he got for his next game ?
What about the budget ?

I get your point that that it's sad for those platform owners who enjoyed his games, but he should have more than enough experience to settle the best terms for himself and his team.

Considering how 'eager' Kojima seems to get this rolling (he's already forming a studio & talking contracts literally as his contract expires), i'd say they are gonna look to prototype as fast as possible. And with that, I imagine UE4 will likely be the prime candidate for any project they develop. It's agile, highly iterative, and with tons of current documentation that Kojima & his potential team could use to get whatever they want off the ground & quickly. No need to spend a ton of money creating a proprietary engine anymore; thats exactly how MGS5's budget ballooned to such an astronomical figure.

Pinning that cost of the FOX engine on MGS5 alone is only something stubborn enough that Konami would do. If that company had any interests in remaining in the gaming industry, they'd know the investment in the FOX engine would spread itself across as many projects as they were willing to go through with.

I definitely expect Kojima's first project to be on a more ubiquitous engine, but I'd hate to see all that Kojima Pro. engine-creation expertise go down the drain. The benefits though could wring out of the PS4 creating an engine that's single-generational and single-platform could be outstanding for all of Sony's exclusives.

Sony has money, and the best selling console at the moment. Sony and Kojima have a great relationship. It makes a lot of sense.

Hopefully Kojima's new studio is an independent contractor like Platinum Games & are just doing hired work for Sony. While I trust Sony to help Kojima out, I want everyone to enjoy the great games that Kojima has brewing in his head.

What I mean is that Sony has been closing studios and reducing the number of employees in currently owned studios in the last 3 years.

Nope, they haven't closed any studios in 3 years. The last studio they closed was Liverpool, which was closed in August 2012. North West Studio.is a brand new studio that they just opened this year.

You know what, It's good to Kojima is fast tracking this already, on the day he left Konami too.

Hopefully he gets to retain basically his entire KojimaPro staff. Unless their still locked to Konami.

You're not understanding me.

I've never said they're going into "cheap mode". Talk about putting words in my mouth.

But their strategy has been slightly more conservative compared to PS3, which was probably their most costly life cycle software wise.

I'm just not seeing them buying a Kojima led studio. It doesn't make much sense given their recent moves and focus on partnerships and sole studio ownership.

Until Dawn is very much an AAA games, Puppeteer was before they made the switch to small and AAA only and Tearaway is AAA on the handheld space (just a remaster/remake/port on PS4)

I'm not sure you know what actually defines AAA. None of these titles had anywhere near the budgets of a Call of Duty or Uncharted.

Don't really mind where he goes, I just want it to be somewhere where he's allowed to do his own thing. Somewhere he is allowed to make the games he wants to make.

EDIT:
Should add that SCE seems to be a decent place to do that, they generally seem to be very supportive of their eccentrics.

Also people talking about respawn are cray. Did you guys forget the game was a total bomb and almost got cancelled until a platform holder stepped in? Yeah what a model to follow.

Or Naughty Dog who's basically second-party

This, they would most likely have work on a NotMGS.

The path he seems to be taking now will allow him to make something completely new.

Independent non exclusive studios get games published/funded all the time. Anybody would fund his game...

If he's locked down to Sony forever it's literally the dumbest move he could make. Why would you leave out PC/Xbox fans (especially PC)?

I could see maybe they'll help upstart KojiPro for a few exclusives... But I don't see Sony opening up dat long term checkbook for Kojima. They're pretty conservative and Kojima's games shown anything but.
