Until Dawn is very much an AAA games, Puppeteer was before they made the switch to small and AAA only and Tearaway is AAA on the handheld space (just a remaster/remake/port on PS4)
Tearaway was made by about 5 people. That's 100% not AAA no matter where you want to move the goal posts. Until Dawn isn't AAA either.

Studio begging?

I wasn't around for the Monolithsoft bombshell, but i wonder how that turned out in the end.

I just hope he gets great representation whereever he ends up.

It broke my heart to see ZOE 3 canned like it was based on some stupid ass requirement for ZOE HD remaster to sell globs.

The best news here is that he's bringing key staff with him. In a perfect world he brings everyone. They're all so damned talented.

Same, even EA is better than Sony.

Nice joke. You're a great stand up.

Sony is much better than mthan places he could go. Look at the stuff Sony gives time and money to. Anything that comes out of media molecule, games that you couldn't see any other publisher even give the time of day to. Look at polyphony and how much time they get.

I feel like going with Sony, and NOT going independent is a pretty bad move.

I can't see why ANYONE would prefer this besides for fanboy list wars.

Working as part of Sony would be financially more secure and Kojima /does/ like to spend money. I think this is probably the best thing that could happen with him, and frankly it's good for the Japanese gaming industry if it leads to more console sales in that region, and therefore more games for all of us.

Praise Be!

After the entire ordeal that he's gone through, I thought he might walk away from the industry but if this is true, oh man, what a great Christmas present.

I hope this is true, but it will probably be over a year for us to see something.

I don't want them to be a freelancer studio or a contactor, their works will be more steady & improvements will be more steady if they work under sony.

Or Naughty Dog who's basically second-party

No, they're not.

Good get for Sony if true. It would also probably mean a lock in to Sony consoles.

That would be a shame as that would likely limit budget, size and scope of games rather than the grandiose MGS V and also limit the audience rather than what multiplatform releases can allow for in terms of revenue

This hasn't been confirmed yet that he's going to join a Sony studio, but you're already seeing people crying/cheering in this thread. Haha

Your game list of shining PS4 exclusives isn't really the best indicator of really strong first party games. There is a difference between putting money towards games and putting out great first party games.

I agree with the other posters that it makes more sense for him to try and start up a new developer like Respawn or something of the ilk.

I don't think either big publisher will give him full creative freedom. He would likely be an adviser to a ton of other stuff.

If you think the games are good or not is subjective .
Point is the spend big money on there games and most of them sell.

Pinning that cost of the FOX engine on MGS5 alone is only something stubborn enough that Konami would do. If that company had any interests in remaining in the gaming industry, they'd know the investment in the FOX engine would spread itself across as many projects as they were willing to go through with.

I definitely expect Kojima's first project to be on a more ubiquitous engine, but I'd hate to see all that Kojima Pro. engine-creation expertise go down the drain. The benefits though could wring out of the PS4 creating an engine that's single-generational and single-platform could be outstanding for all of Sony's exclusives.

While I agree that engine-development is something we're seeing less of, and that it used to be quite an exciting thing to see an engine showcase its strengths with the freshman titles they would produce (Gears of War, Half-Life 2), the truth is it just takes way too long & it is way too expensive to roll your own engine in this day & age. Much of the visual renderers Fox Engine employed can be replicated in UE4, as its easily one of the most highly custom engines i've ever worked with.

I think it's partly because Sony is known to give developers more freedom in development compared to big multiplatform publishers. At least in the past. I mean who else would be still funding The Last Guardian?
Exactly, If Ueda was working with other multi platform publishers he would have been fired immediately and his game cancelled or rushed out incomplete..which is what Konami have done to Kojima but Sony still kept the Last Guardian ongoing.

I wonder if they are going to throw him onto Playstation VR. If I was Sony, he is the exact person I would want to make a game for VR. He'd come up with some really unique off the wall ideas for the tech

I want a low-key project ala Policenauts or Snatcher. Stop trying to build megalithic worlds and go back to your roots, Koji.

Independent non exclusive studios get games published/funded all the time. Anybody would fund his game...

If he's locked down to Sony forever it's literally the dumbest move he could make. Why would you leave out PC/Xbox fans (especially PC)?
If Sony are offering him a higher salary and better benefits why is it a dumb move? This is a job after all lol jesus christ

Sad that it won't be a studio where he will make multi-platform games, but really the man deserves to work anywhere that will make him happy. I highly doubt this is his only job offer.

Also people talking about respawn are cray. Did you guys forget the game was a total bomb and almost got cancelled until a platform holder stepped in? Yeah what a model to follow.

Seriously.

And that was the call of duty people.

You guys are completely abandoning logic and history. Saying this is more risky than being independent is absurd.

Pretty good idea. Might make for a better schedule than letting him work on an AAA game due out in 2019, too close to a generation change (PA5)

You do realise that if he gets to make P.T. on PSVR people will actually die. As in drop dead from heart attacks and stuff.

If that happens how could xbone/xwhatever possibly compete against PS4/5?

Capcom should give Dino Crisis for him and Sony to develop.

Kojima + Sony seems like an interesting match up. Would be interesting to see what they come up with. Sony sure didn't sleep on that one.

Damn the salt is starting to get out of control. The thread on /v/ is full of it as well. Sadly I know his next game will be ready in like 4-5 years... meh I hope it ended up being PS4 swan song and not just another cross generation game like MGS V.

The problem with going independent is money and resources. A publisher like Sony solves both problems.

Yes but those come with strings attached. He has historically blown out budgets and taken an incredibly long time to develop games. The likelihood that either publisher will give him full creative freedom and a new studio with this setup is really unlikely.

I think people are just getting too excited and not looking at the reality of the situation. He isn't good at running a development team. He struggles to hit budgets/timelines and feature creep is very prevalent. Besides Konami sucking, there are reasons they have had strained relations for years.

If he is given a new studio by one of the publishers they will have him on a really, really tight leash. Your best hope should be that he joins and takes some sort of creative adviser role.

His only chance of actually running his own studio with minimal interference is as an independent, but getting funding would be difficult because of the reasons I laid out.

How so? Multiplatform tends to limit scope since you'll have to develop with the lowest common denominator in mind.

Bigger customer base. And I don't see how it forces you into targeting the lowest common denominator. If anything, if you're looking specifically not to target the lowest common denominator, you'd want to have the larger customer base as sales will be harder to come by.

If that's where he wants to be, I'm cool with that.

Whatever gets him the most creative freedom and money to get his work out.

And I don't mind him being locked behind one publisher. That's what he was to me for most of his career. Makes no difference to me.
