Sony announces partnership w/ KojiPro, New IP, 1st game "console exclusive to PS4"/PC

I don't see a problem with Ryan's tweet.

There wasn't. He's primarily an Xbox/Microsoft game journalist, so naturally he's going to wonder if Microsoft even attempted at getting a deal with Kojima.

People love to insert and assume console wars/bias into everything.

It is, but...

They most likely no longer have the engineering expertise in-house to provide reasonable support to licensees, and may not even have enough of their tech directors left on staff to even make using the engine, themselves, truly reasonable.

They'd probably be smart to license or even sell it, if the offer came up, if only to recoup some of the expenses. Not like they're giving away valuable trade secrets in an industry they no longer compete in. (They will not do this. Konami is not smart.)

That would indeed be the smart thing to do...

So this would probably be it for Konami? I can't see them coming up with anything new.
But it isn't a surprise seeing as their focus shifted to the mobile market.

But if what you say is true, that would mean the death of Pro Evolution Soccer as well, seeing as it is built on the FOX-engine.

Hmm well isn't Ryan head of IGN xbox? It makes sense that he would mention that his followers are likely interested in that. (Same with Greg Miller and Playstation)

People can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think IGN stopped having platform specific writers/editors.

What are Microsoft doing letting this get away from them?

They're in dire need of new studios creating (console) exclusive software

I'm so happy for Kojima-san. He were my favorite developer ever since growing. I'm happy he have kept the name of the studio, and changed the logo for a fresh new start. Letting go of Metal Gear, and letting ones imagination run wild. I hope he does something ala Snatcher next, or a horror game.

So Konami will now keep releasing new Metal Gear Solid games and annual PES titles?
I wonder how MGS will change without Kojima, as in which direction will they take it.

So the question now is, when will we see the game? Will it be 2, 3, 4 years?
I think Sony has learned their lesson with "The Last Guardian" and no one is going to wait 4 years to play the next game Kojima makes.

Speak for yourself! I'll wait as long as it takes for him to finish.

Huge news. I have to say, as much as I love everything Xbox, (by preference, not fanboyism) Microsofts sloth like behaviour on SO MANY FRONTS is really starting to annoy me. Either the company is being run by idiots or they have a huge amount of other plans to show off sometime.

Especially in a casuals eye, EVERYTHING is only on PS. Almost every multiplatform title had something exclusive to PS. STILL being slow with the majority in indie stuff too. There resistance to make quality niche games that they know will sell little too.

They literally came out and apologised about SFV, and it doesn't even seem like they tried here.

Hmph.

Well, look. Most of these deals come down to personal relationships between the top dogs. Have you seen any selfies with MS execs and Kojima? Sony has a 20 year relationship with Kojima, and Cerny and him seem very friendly. There's no substitute for face time in these situations. I imagine Cerny, Shu, and House were very quick to get into discussions with Kojima and had the personal access to do so. Besides, Kojima knows which way the wind is blowing. Going with an MS exclusive would not be good for his local Japanese fanbase.

I said it earlier and I'll say it again.

I've always gotten the impression that no one in Microsoft outside of Mattrick ever really cared about Kojima (and only in name value alone).

If Mattrick was still around, I think there would've been a much bigger chance that Microsoft would've offered him something he couldn't turn down.

I don't know why people would ever be surprised by this.

I love PlayStation, but even I think they are getting a bit arrogant with this video announcement. Shu's tweet is also a good example.

This was probably going to be a PSX announcement, but the timing was off. Now that Kojima is done at Konami, they made it public. Not an issue at all.

Not at all in my opinion. Once he announces he is out of contract he wouldn't have been left alone by people trying to find out what direction he was heading in. I see the announcement more as a necessity at this point.

Anyone see Cerny with any other Japanese developers? Maybe we'll see Cerny with a cosplayer Crash soon.

Wait a sec but...presuming Cerny is the system architect for PS5, and unless they bring back Crazy Ken for one last rodeo I don't doubt that he will be, but does this mean he'll be surveying KojiPro for a list of wants and...what would Kojima even request...

Yeah, Sony is being so arrogant reviving dead franchises and funding games that otherwise would not be made. Complacent Sony can't keep getting away with this!

Hell goddamn yes. This is the best outcome I think. Sony helps with finding, and there will still be a PC version (presumably).

Good shit, sounds like it should be on PC as well then.

Can't wait to see what comes from his team, pity we won't get the godly fox engine.

Sony's basically trying to save console video game development in Japan this generation and for some reason people are trying to paint them as arrogant or lazy. It's pretty ridiculous.

Nacho Requena is answering some tweets about what he knows. He says Sony wants a long term relation with the studio.

It would be huge for Sony to basically bring them in like a second party eventually. Sony does love them some second parties. I guess this first game could be like a trial run.

Koji gets capital and direct technical inside tech trade with Sony's power houses (Naughty Dog, GG), Sony gets Kojima barging rights and exclusivity. It'd be nice if Kojima was given freedom for PC ports at least.

Imo, money is great and all but nothing beats working with people you have a good and long relationship with.

There was nothing Microsoft could do. Why else do you think when people say "I hope MS picks him up!" They follow it with "Just to see the meltdown!" While when people say "I hope Sony picks him up!" They follow it with "It makes too much sense!"

Is Shu's tweet some sort of meme or something? 'Do you love MS so much?'... genuinely curious because multiple posts are like 'master troll' and I don't get it and need this stuff explained to me.

As much as I joked about Cerny earlier, I doubt he is as involved as people think and neither is Shu. All the sony twitter people are crediting Brad Douglas (Global Third-Party Relations) for this partnership. Which leads me to further believe Kojima's new IP isn't owned by Sony, otherwise that would be Shuhei's jurisdiction.
