Time : The Best RPG of 2015 Is Only Available on the Wii U

Time.
Xenoblade Chronicles X Review: Reason to Buy Nintendo’s Wii U

The good: Huge and beautifully realized world to explore, excellent gameplay systems work well together

The bad: Insufficient documentation—and this is a game that could use a better manual

Bottom line: Hands-down the best roleplaying game of 2015
Interesting remarks, especially when we have Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, and smaller titles like Pillars of Eternity and Undertale as well this year.

Lock if old.

Personally I think I'd still put the Witcher 3 above it, but I've invested 80+ hours into Xenoblade already. Very fun to explore, gameplay wise it has been and incredible ride.

I think it's definitely up there. It's definitely one of the most interesting open worlds in a year where open worlds were a copy-paste nightmare.

Pretty reasonable opinion to hold. Xenoblade itself was the second coming of cocaine. It's fans are the chosen gamers, of which legend foretells will be the ones to challenge Archangel Infernia to the promised game in the dying times.

It's only fair that its sequel is considered GOTY material.

While I haven't has the time to fully go through it yet the author of this piece, Matt Peckham, and Tom Chick recorded a two hour long Podcast here detailing their thoughts on the game. Full warning that there may be spoilers there as I have yet to finish it. While Toms review is still forthcoming I think he liked the game.

Truly, yep. Best damn RPG this year and that's among some serious contenders. It'll be a miracle if we get another Xenoblade but that's a different argument.

Won't play it until I can get a WiiU for less than $200 but good for the 8-4 guys.

Would've picked Bloodborne

Personally i agree. Loved bloodborne but it wasnt quite as good as demons/dark 1 for me. TW3 was bloody amazing and i loved every minute, and somehow i just cant put either above XBX, the game just oozes charm and playability. Its personally special as it reminds me of PSO quite a bit, and ive never quite found a game to scratch that itch since the dc/gc days.

At least you can talk. Who are you?
I'm not the biggest fan of RPGs but XCX has grabbed me. If I hadn't downloaded Xenoblade on the Wii U eShop I probably wouldn't have cared. I didn't even finish that game in the end.

Tried getting into Witcher 3 but the combat just sucked, so hard. I enjoyed the characters and quests, but every time I needed to fight something, I just started caring less and less.

Don't really have much to criticize about XCX, after a day's worth of playing. Wish the map could be used and navigated on the TV, but other than that, I'm loving it.

When asked for comment, Xenoblade responded with: "Uh Uh yeah, Uh Uh Uh yeah yeah uh uh."
Haha I chuckled at this. I love the soundtrack too.

Great choice. I've never played anything like it before. I don't always know what I'm doing but it certainly is something else indeed. The digital manual is pretty good, but even then I feel like that "I have no idea what I'm doing" dog at computer pic.

I bet Carl Sagan would have liked this game. It reminds me of the imagined worlds he talked about in Cosmos.

I dunno. I'm like 10 hours in and I'm not really feeling it (Eh? See what I did there!?)

I mean, it's a good game. It might even be great. But it's a exploration heavy RPG with a really cool battle system. Other than those two cool things, is it really that amazing? Doesn't seem like there's a whole lot going on in the world of XCX. Not that that's bad or anything.

I'm not a religious zealot for The Witcher 3 like some on this forum but it seems to have a lot more going on than XCX. And when you count Fallout 4 and Bloodborne, it really doesn't become a clear choice of XCX > everything else. There's no "hands down" here, for me at least.

From what I've seen, Xenoblade X is a faithful update to the classic JRPG structure. It's still full of those tropes but does it really, really well.

I mean, let's not pretend that Witcher 3 is anything revolutionary. It's a faithful update to the classic WRPG structure. Bloodborne is a faithful update to the Souls structure. Fallout 4 is a faithful update to the Bethesda structure. Different strokes for different folks.

This has been a year of damn fine games, but there hasn't been much that really struck me as revolutionary, and that's okay.

Think I'll have to agree with this pick. I won't count BB as an RPG, as I think it's definitely more of an action game, but I would definitely put this above Witcher for me based on gameplay systems and how much actual I fun I've had with both games.

I'd love to pick it up based on the visuals and scope I've seen, but I remember watching combat gameplay that looked really monotonous and braindead. Someone please tell me it's otherwise, it looks like a beautiful RPG to sink my teeth into. I've never played a Xenoblade game btw.

Simon Parkin said much of the same in his list of Best Games of the Year for the New Yorker:

Simon Parkin said:
Fallout IV may be the better-known sprawling role-playing game of 2015, but Xenoblade is the stronger of the two.

As someone who has played through Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Xenoblade X, and Fallout 4, I find myself agreeing with TIME here.
