New recommendations section Updated 27/12/15

If you already saw this thread last year, you know most of the old content/catalog. The thread will fill up with new sale content and games that have been released over the past 6 months. I highly recommend checking back here during the last few days of the sale.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Feel free to ask about impressions of Indie games, "X or Y?"-questions, mention suggestions for this list or any other game related topic.
This thread is already rather packed, but its in the nature of things, that I couldnt include every game on earth. I stuck to the ones that are generally recommended or recommended by me/the Indie Game thread guys. If there are games not mentioned here, but you you feel strongly about them, then mention them in here in the exact same format as the other entries and I'll add them to the OP if I didnt already. Please use the following format:
Gamename - Price (XX% off)
Link
Short 2-3 sentence description why people should check it out. Preferably NO PR talk/steam page copypasta,
but your own recommendation. It makes these threads much more interesting to read.
Please, please, please reupload any Steam screenshots used for recommendation posts and do not linke the steam screenshot directly. (Pictures from the store pages get deleted quite often)
I reserve the right not to include troll entries (Looking at you, Bad Rats).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| 3. Personal Sale Recommendations |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I might add a list of games that I would love to give some more attention to during this sale, with either an incredibly low price (One Way Heroics) or games that get undeservedly mediocre Steam reviews (Sentinel) or are just otherwise awesome and not as well known as they deserve to be. This depends on my free time and I cant promise it, but maybe I can add this in a few days.
This part will be filled over the course of the next few days. Follow the thread, or check back here on the last few sales days.
Aaru's Awakening - $1,49 (90% off)
PSoGMEG.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/294060
This is a pretty and very challenging platformer with quite a few interesting mechanics (like damage through teleportation). If you get used to the game controls, the flow through the levels is quite fantastic. It gets a bit undeservedly overlooked due to some minor issues and definitely is worth a look on sale. I highly recommend using a controller, though.
Automation - $25,49 (15% off)
fwWwq0m.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/293760/
This is not a "game" yet, and only a sandbox tool focussed on car and engine design. It is supposed to develop into a tycoon style game eventually, but what you can do: Twiddling around with motor composition, dozens of stats and some basic challenges that teach you how changing individual aspects affects the performance of a car.
Avernum 1 - Escape from the Pit - $1,99 (80% off)
dZ6tMAr.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/208400/
Spiderweb games rank among my favourite RPGs ever. They are deep, have great lore and stories, intriguing mechanics, huge worlds and are generally not something you see very often. These games might look simple, but they are absolutely fan-tas-tic. Avernum 1 is probably the best game to start dipping into these games.
Besiege - $5.59 (30% off)
9AA3E7F6FCA7038121359B35C7EB83450229B568
http://store.steampowered.com/app/346010
Besiege takes the vehicle construction you love from games like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and injects it with a dose of physics, blood, and medieval destruction, as you build powerful siege engines to level castles and lay waste to armies.
Cities: Skylines - $11,99 (50% off)
lcdFx5z.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/255710
Step aside SimCity, the best game in the city building genre is called Cities: Skylines. Deep simulation, yet accessible, never ending supply of mods, plenty of features, great graphics and a developer who knows exactly what genre fans wanted. Ridiculous value proposition even at its non-sale price.
Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal - $4.94 (67% off)
ss_29a4c873e802fcc4b0c4c793130424b807896920.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/280220
A deep and surprisingly offensive tower defense game. You'll need to construct power networks and supplies lines, establish beachheads, terraform the maps, and push the frontlines in your battle against the fluid Creeper foe.
Cryptark - $8.70 (33% off)
h2uIviH.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/344740
Piloting a heavily-armed mech suit, you must explore derelict ships teeming with defenses and enemies. An insane amount of customization, satisfyingly powerful weapons, and a gorgeous artstyle makes each firefight a chaotic and gripping spectacle
Darkest Dungeon - $9,99 (50% off)
KSPZT0Q.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/262060/
Darkest Dungeon is perhaps most aptly described as "The Road" of dungeon crawlers. The bleak Lovecraftian game explores the human angle of dungeon crawling, delving into what would happen to the mind and body as you bled, toiled, and endured the dank darkness filled with unearthly horrors. Stylized visuals, gruesome beasts, deep tactical combat, and an atmospherically anchored.
Deadcore - $2.49 (75% off)
AdmiredPeriodicAmericancrow.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/284460
A speedrunning first-person platformer with tight controls, inventive level design, and a pretty cool sci-fi aesthetic
Distance - $9.99 (50% off)
IdenticalFrailDrake.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/233610
Distance isn't about realism; it's about barrel-rolling through a gauntlet of lasers. It's gliding between grinders, evading massive saw blades at breakneck speeds. It's weaving through a hailstorm of spikes, and maneuvering along tracks that twist and turn unfettered by gravity and physics.
Duck Game - $9.74 (25% off)
Earthtongue - $2,49 (50% off)
pOa%2BpR.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/358070/
This is a prime example for the type of games that I started creating the Indie threads on GAF for. There are plenty of games that are bound to never get mass traction and an alien garden simulator playground definitely falls into that. Dabbling in this ecosystem and how dozens of plants or animals react to each other and unlocking more options was one of my personal favourites in 2015.
Freaking Meatbags - $4,99 (50% off)
kVaBSfs.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/297060/
Its a great Tower Defense style game with its own RTS base building twist. Went back to it multiple times over the the course of a few months. Breeding alienhumans and building a decent resource structure never really got old. Highly recommended and I have no clue why this game slipped so much under the radar.
Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows - $1.99 (80% off)
DpWgmEC.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/296490
Tower defense, yes, but one of the most intricate, complex tower defense games I've ever played. If you're the sort to min-max the hell out of your games, you'll love this. If you've already played the Flash game version, you may not find much new, but otherwise there are tens of hours of play waiting for you for an extremely low price.
Grim Dawn - $14,99 (40% off)
qIbb5E5.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/219990/
Grim Dawn has just become feature complete and it's getting its final polish before release early 2016. The game is a Diablo-style ARPG, from the developers of Titan Quest and a great way to scratch the loot itch. Easily one of the best modern entries in the genre.
Hacknet - $6.69 (33% off)
Screenshot-1-Hacknet-1023x767-2d377bca008226d0.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/365450
A story-driven hacking game about a famous hacker who died under mysterious circumstances and his infamous security system Hacknet-OS. The interface does not only look like a Unix-based OS, it also requires you to input real Unix commands to progress in the story, making you (almost) feel like a real hacker.
Hand of Fate - $9,99 (60% off)
jfxh4XF.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/266510/
A roguelike game with a VERY engaging and addictive deck building component that effects all game encounters. Add some basic, yet rewarding (through events) combat and the best shell game implementation in any video game, and you got a winner. One of my biggest surprises 2015, bought on PC, rebought on PS4 and that game still didnt get any less fun after 100+ rounds.
Hard West - $13.99 (30% off)
ss_2ef805bbf4b6555f8b671a86a1bb04c6d023bd98.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/307670
Turn-based tactical combat in the supernatural Wild West. With hard-hitting bullets and no overwatch, the game's focus on flanking, positioning, and smart use of otherworldly abilities makes for a tactical experience more akin to chess than XCOM
I Am Bread - $4.41 (66% off)
ISX5eQ5.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/327890
Of all the wacky-sim games out there like Goat Simulator, I think I Am Bread does the best job at actually being a game, rather than a quirky sandbox. There's a little bit of QWOP in the bread's movement, as you use the four corners of your slice to sticky-cup your way across levels Mission Impossible-style in search of heating elements to get toasted. It comes with an animated GIF creator. You'll use it often.
Infinifactory - $12,49 (50% off)
nKu14io.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/300570/
Easily among the best 2015 had to offer and one of the brightest examples of the programming game genre. Made by the SpaceChem developer, but quite a bit more accessible, yet still as satisfying. The added third dimension makes for the game that best gives the feeling of automating construction. Anybody liking puzzley/thinky games needs to check this out.
iO - $2,49 (50% off)
tumblr_ngf7guTqz71tlfdr5o1_250.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/324070/
A minimalistic and smart physics platformer/sandbox, that you might actually find fun even if you already played one too many game in that genre. The sleek design and satisfying shrinking/changing mass main mechanic makes this game highly enjoyable.
Jotun - $9.99 (30% off)
UAwyLHp.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/323580
Jotun brings the lands and deities of Norse myth to gorgeous life through hand-drawn animations and vivid art designs. Armed with only your battle axe, agility, and powers from the gods, you explore unique realms and face towering elemental giants
Master Spy - $4.99 (50% off)
u1rdHx5.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/331190
A great platformer to check out if you're looking for a challenge. It's a precision platformer with a stealth element, as you use cloaking tech to evade enemies and all kinds of hazards
NEO Scavenger - $7.49 (50%)
ss_f72c7858ecc10a74598c6fa198203e75dd65db05.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/248860
This game. Man, this game. It's a bleak gritty post-apocalyptic roguelike with a focus on realistic survival and easily one of the most intense and immersive experiences you'll find in the genre. The combat is ruthless and brutal, akin to the quick violent encounters seen in The Road or No Country, and survival is a matter of wrapping wounds to ward off infection and going to sleep with appropriate warmth and shelter so you don't freeze to death overnight
Prophour23 - $3.99 (60% off)
FrequentWateryAmericanindianhorse.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/317610
A weird organic take on tower defense. Swarms of bugs want to devour your heart; grow organs and thorns to stop them. Muscles power screaming faces and hands. Rib cages create barriers of bone. Livers, lungs, and more round out your biological arsenal
Reassembly - $9.74 (35% off)
SkeletalUnluckyHart.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/329130/
Reassembly is a sprawling space combat game where you can make any ship you want, build up a fleet, and conquer the galaxy. A dynamic ecosystem of AI-driven factions, deep physics-based ship building, and vibrant screen-filling battles makes this a game worth checking out
RETSNOM - $1.24 (75% off)
FlatAdorableIzuthrush.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/382920
A puzzle platformer where you bend the level to your will through a unique mirroring mechanic. Alter the level geometry, swap gravity, and more, with a dash of combat and zombies as well
Sang Froid: Tales of Werewolves - $2.24 (85% off)
ss_3e43f0db754a065088488400eb23a1321c7c5172.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/227220
Tower defense (kind of) meets third-person shooter meets survival horror-ish tension. When a wolf pack is circling you as you're desperately reloading your single-shot musket as the bonfire grows dimmer by the second, you'll understand why Sang Froid is so damn tense and challenging
Software Inc. - $13,99 (0% off)
NewSimFinal.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/362620/
Simulation game that is still in active development. Similar to Game Dev Story, you are tasked to create your company building and team setup. The game is actually lot deeper that it might seem at first with several economic decisions, employee needs and more. Still simple graphically, but the sim side of things is already very intriguing.
Starship Rubicon - $3.99 (60% off)
7Mi1Z0i.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/372030
A thrilling space shoot-em-up with rogue-lite elements, featuring a deep build-a-ship mechanic that lets you customize your playstyle with guns, abilities, and perks ranging from gravity guns and teleporting to enhanced shields and auto-targeting protection drones
Sublevel Zero - $11.99 (25% off)
UUuw0Ok.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/327880
I've written so many recommendations for this game that I'm basically repeating the same company line over and over. It's basically a roguelike Descent: procedurally generated levels, upgradeable and craftable weapons, permadeath. Most importantly, it feels pretty much exactly like Descent's flight model (a difficult thing to get right, based on other games I've played!) but it brings its own unique character to the table.
Swapperoo - $6.99 (30% off)
ss_c40657d0086a8606d8ee0deefd93625f2ec2890a.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/410150
A unique take on the match-3 puzzler from the devs of the Quell series. Making matches aren't enough; you need to strategically move tiles that can only move in certain directions, carefully deal with destructive sawblade tiles, locked tiles, tiles that self-destruct the board after a number of turns, tiles that need to protected, and much more.
Teleglitch - $3.24 (75% off)
9Z5yhtz.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/234390
Take the lightning fast pace of Hotline Miami, with the dread and challenge of your favorite roguelike, and that's Teleglitch in a gritty sci-fi nutshell. The tension of the unknown, the joy of finding a new gun or a medkit, the fear when you're low on health and ammo, is fantastic.
The Masterplan - $4.99 (75% off)
4HAUFnG.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/313080
A tactical heist game with a cool comic book-esque art style. Lead your crew of thieves and criminals on tense robberies across the city, guns blazing or acting with the caution and stealth of a master thief
Thea: The Awakening - $15.99 (20% off)
iRxe64F.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/378720/
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you crossed Civilization, Rogue, and Card Battling Games? No? Then you should, and if you have, Thea: The Awakening is that game. The tutorial isn't the best, but once you get into the game, it's fantastically addictive, and the ultimate in "one more turn" since when you "lose" you have meta-level progress that carries over. Also based on Slavic mythology, which isn't something you see often.
The Sun and Moon - $3.49 (50% off)
JadedPopularCrownofthornsstarfish.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/321560
It's a stylish precision platformer from the dev of RogueLight, with a vibrant art style, great level design, and a cool mechanic of fluidly phasing through the environments to gain momentum.
Volume - $9.99 (50% off)
ss_8b7f418e28abe3bfee82970fd6241799ce39109c.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/365770
A slick stealth puzzler that harkens back to old school Metal Gear Solid. Figuring out how to outmanuver guards and traps with gadgets and speed is always satisfying throughout the game's 100 levels
10 Second Ninja - $4.99 (50% off)
ss_73a55070f8039498e939de56a33cdd5be55b30ba.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/271670
Ten Second Ninja is very simple, fast-paced, and easy to get into. I don't have much to say about it because, frankly, there's not much to say- it's very fast and very fun- it's in the same vein as games like Super Hexagon and Super Meat Boy. In fact, this game should be renamed "Super Ten Second Ninja" in order to fit in with them. No? Alright, that's a stupid idea. I'll tell you what's not a stupid idea: playing this game.
10,000,000 - $2.49 (50% off)
ss_041a94544d530bfb336daeb7179123d8b788d5fa.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/227580
A connect 3 Rogue-Like Puzzle RPG Adventure that will leave you frustrated as hell. Yet, it'll give a huge sense of satisfaction on gaining freedom.
1000 Amps - $3.99 (20% off)
TNYwev0.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/205690
Imagine if you will, a metroidvania. But instead of enemies, there are platforming puzzles. Top it off with a nice zen feeling art style. That's 1000 Amps.
1001 Spikes - $4.94 (67% off)
IMwbPQu.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/260790
You are going to die in this game about every 10 to 20 secs upon entering a new level. The levels are not random but there are brutal none the less. This is a side scrolling 8 bit platformer which requires you to memorize the stages because otherwise you will not be prepared for what the game throws at you. Ceilings are falling down or spikes arise from a block, you just never know what the game might throw at you in any given level and your memory is your best tool for survival. Not for the faint of heart, but highly recommmended!
140 - $1.99 (60% off)
tcDIcFo.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/242820
140 is a challenging minimalistic platformer with abstract colorful graphics. Rhythmic awareness is required to overcome obstacles controlled by an energetic, yet melancholic electronic soundtrack.
A Bird Story - $1.74 (65% off)
wSXWKun.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/327410
The games' narrative doesn't use any words to tell it's story, instead the player is required to understand and speculate without a clear explanation on the story. Similar to "To The Moon", the best part of this game is how it is able to make you care about the characters of the game with minimal exposition and explanations, in this case the boy and the bird he rescues. The art direction is well done and the backgrounds are pleasant to look at.
A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 Pack - $2.99 (80% off)
psDWo6R.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/14311
The upside to this is that both are available with each other, so you can get both for the very cheap price of $3.74 and find out which one is more your speed. If you're able to get past the gaudy visuals, occasionally confusing subsystems and heavy reliance on your enjoyment of lootwhore-vania games, you should consider what AVWW1&2 have to offer.
Achron - $3.99 (80% off)
ZYvodFJ.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/109700
Take this recommendation with a grain of salt. Achron is not a really a good RTS game per se, although its something diehard RTS fans should give a try to experience something that no other game in the genre brings to the table - Time Travel (in MP even). What you'll need to learn is how to counteract an attack on a battle that you already won before, while trying to defend a factory by using a group of units from that factory that had not yet been produced. Trying to learn this game deep fried my brain. A purchase gives you TWO copies, so you can deep fry a friends brain with the same purchase!
AI War - $2.49 (75% off)
gy8aVVj.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/40400
It's a cool game -- lots of unique ideas, but it can be a little too complicated for its own good. An interesting aspect is that you can sort of control the pace of the game. The AI mainly reacts to your moves, so if you don't do anything, the difficulty ramp-up is slow. So if you want to take your time, you can almost treat it like a turn-based game. Unit count and ship type count is super huge, games can get into the tens of thousands of units. If that sounds interesting to you, I'd say it's worth a look. It's actually not super hard to pick up, but you'll want to read a bit outside the game because otherwise it's easy to miss some things.
Amanita Collection - $6.24 (75% off)
JT9Ur9D.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/15624
In my opinion the most original and engaging games of the genre are Amanita Design games (I'm biased as I grew watching and loving eastern european animation classics). Samorost, Machinarium, Botanicula. They all are conveniently bundled for this sale. And they all are a must have for the fans of the genre.
Antichamber - $4.99 (75% off)
antichamber1.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/219890
Mindbending 3D portal-esque puzzle game that is described as "every aspect of it is created to bring players out of their comfort zone" and that "the biggest enemy you will be facing is yourself." This game won a myriad of awards, so are you prepared to check out what the fuss is about?
Astebreed - $4.49 (70% off)
P1yLDOT.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/283680
Astebreed is a sort of shoot'em'up / 3D mecha game hybrid. There's a fairly complicated melee system which makes the game very different from normal shooters. Fantastic game with fantastic production values, smart design that encourages you to use every trick in the book, tight controls, pretty solid audio (found EVR to have a more catchy soundtrack), and a strong scoring mechanic. Its a tad too easy for a shmup, but still very much worth it, especially on a sale.
Atom Zombie Smasher - $4.99 (50% off)
ss_457187d4d7c8a585683678311a31c74ebc68e048.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/55040
This is a clever little blend between the board game Pandemic (which ya'll should try) and a mini RTS game. Between missions you are presented with a world map where you monitor zombie outbreaks in various regions. It's a very clever game that always impresses me with how it makes use of limited graphics to create a game that both requires fast reflexes, tactical planning, and conveys a solid apocalyptic feel as you play.
Audiosurf - $2.49 (75% off)
8ds4gV5.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/12900
Action Puzzle that has the difficult, form, velocity changes according to the music you choose to it play.
Avadon: The Black Fortress - $1.99 (80% off)
TBhfaPm.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/112100
Not the best Spiderweb RPG (the developer) but one of the few "modern" games which dont require you to play in a 640*480 window. Its a very involved classic RPG, which requires a lot of reading and planning in combat situations. If you want an easy entry into the Spiderweb games, while still having an 80 hour classic RPG epoch to explore, this game should be high up on your wish list.
Aztaka - $0.99 (90% off)
Zxvmmmg.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/37100
A sidescrolling Action RPG, think a side scrolling Diablo game lite, including loot, smaller puzzles and snazzy fighting skills. Loved the gameplay of the demo, certainly worth $2,49. There is a free demo you can check out too.
After buying this at Christmas 2011 and not feeling it after the first few levels thought I'd give it another go and boy am I glad. Pretty much have been sucked in by the slowly evolving story, beautiful art style and aurally pleasing soundtrack. A slow starter but once it gets going is really hard to put down.
BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2 - $3.74 (75% off)
t5FvJ4b.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/218060
One of the finest arcade music games around. Straying from the usual style of the Bit.Trip games, this game offers a bit of variation in your Bit Trip Collection. While Runner2 is a platformer, it has decidedly arcade sensibilities. Amongst other actions like hurtling over obstacles or dancing if you have a free moment, collectible items contribute points to an overall score. Prepare to crank up the difficulty and strive for perfection. You dont have a Bit.Trip collection yet? Well, then get started!
Unique, charming and balls-hard puzzle game. Its a really good game and highly recommended purchase at $1.24, but you should be prepared to spend a lot of time on each level figuring out the ins and outs of this devious puzzle game.
BroForce - $7.49 (50% off)
PBHNziq.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/274190
The game set out to be an ode to 80's and 90's action movies, the Expendables in video game form, and it succeeds on every possible level. Neo, The Terminator, Blade, Rambo, and many more are already on the growing roster, with recent additions like the Boondock Brothers adding even more diversity. Each level is a fully destructible playground filled with explosive barrels, propane canisters, and many many enemies ranging from simple goons to suicide bombers to guard dogs and mini-gun wielding mini-bosses. The destructible environments adds an layer of depth, allowing you to tunnel beneath enemies to flank them or collapse the ground under their feet or crush them beneath trucks and heavy debris. Early access, but even in its current state, it landed in our Indie GOTY top 50 of 2013 list.
Broken Age - $6.24 (75% off)
On your journey, you will come across all kinds of creatures and civilizations - dangerous enemies, unexpected friends and deeply troubled beings, like yourselves. One of the game's many strengths lies in the way it conveys your progress through the world. And what a world it is: The sense of scale, the picturesque environments, the obstacles you have to overcome and the way their implemented into their surroundings - everything is part of a big, breathing tableau. The player quickly becomes immersed in an inner and outer journey that feels as natural as it is poetically refined - with the all the subtlety and all the splendor that comes with it.
Capsule - $1.99 (60% off)
ss_2e3791c8093ff86610a5c109e83ceb0caec5b860.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/303940
Capsule is a minimalist experience that absolutely delivers and I'd recommend the game for its tense gameplay, fantastic atmosphere, and immersive soundscape. Gameplay-wise, it's a balancing act between exploration and desperation, masterfully crafting a gripping atmosphere through audio and sound alone.
Card City Nights - $1.99 (50% off)
vBIX2RH.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/271820
Its not the most complex of card games but it is nice and snappy to play and the overall package is full of lovely art in both the cards and the surrounding scenes as you wander across this nighttime island city, which basically seems like a halfbreed of that game on FF8 and a match 3 puzzler The entire game is pretty nuts with the sheer variety of different scenes and characters you come across. If you want a singleplayer collectible card game, Card City Nights is a very tasty and rather easily digestible affair that comes recommended.
Carpe Fulgur Collection - $9.99 (80% off)
0x4Ps2W.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/15400
3 charmingly translated Japanese indie games, all sharing a moe anime inspired art style and characters (fair warning for people with a strong aversion to such things) from 2 different developers. Recettear a item shop game/action RPG dungeon crawler and Chantalise a ARPG dungeon crawler from EasyGameStation, plus Fotune Summoners a side scrolling ARPG platformer (think Wonder Boy in Monster World or Zelda 2) from Lizsoft.
Caster - $0.50 (83% off)
0000007744.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/29800
This game is ridiculously dumb, but in a way that just barely holds it together enough that it comes out pretty entertaining. Recommended if you're interested in spending an hour or two playing an outrageously overpowered, would-be Megaman who doesn't give a flip if the game is basically broken around him because it's just a lot of fun.
Castle in the Darkness - $2.99 (50% off)
QTMqC3Q.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/262960
Castle in the Darkness is an engaging and challenging game. If you want an experience harkening back to the "old" days, this game will give it to you... in the form of hundreds of deaths. You will be required to learn enemy patterns, death trap placements and game mechanics if you want to survive. This game is out to kill you and highly recommended.
Cat Lady - $1.99 (80% off)
NYh1YeK.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/253110
A grim "point & click" (well, not really, since you use keyboard to move around) adventure game about a lonely lady with depression. The game starts with her committing suicide... and then the story goes even darker and a more gory.
Cave Story+ - $4.94 (67% off)
zdhrkYW.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/200900
Originally developed by one man (Daisuke Amaya) Cave Story gained certain notoriety accross the internet. Released initially as a freeware the game received a "remake" by Nicalis but still retaining the classic visual and the amazing soundtrack.
Chivalry - $2.49 (90% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/219640
Straightforward in approach yet exceedingly effective in delivery, it elevates the notion of melee combat past a last ditch combat maneuver and into a realm of medieval, online multiplayer bliss.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/282760
Unique rhythm game. Instead of tasking you with pressing buttons on time, it requires you to listen to music and differentiate between different parts of a track, to program sound loops to recreate the original music track. A great soundtrack and a relaxed gameplay mechanic make this a very interesting experience.
Clones - $1.49 (85% off)
Cloudbuilt is all about speed and precision. Easy to pick up, difficulty to master. The objective in each level is to race to the end, using a variety of techniques to reach the goal in a timely manner. Demi can slide, double jump, dash, wall run (both vertically and horizontally) and boost throughout the scattered platforms contained within each environment.
Cosmic DJ - $0.74 (75% off)
fDxvA8k.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/297110
This is more of a musical toy than a "game" or a tool to create music. It has levels, but the most enjoyment you get from this, is by just toying around with certain tunes and mixing them in short loops into something you enjoy to listen to. The game is basically feature complete, despite still carrying the early access label, but stay away from this if the idea of simply toying around with sounds does not seem appealing to you.
CrimsonLand - $6.99 (50% off)
ss_56d5673df5bc916a1f92200c24e49d5495faa311.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/262830
HD remaster of a classic twin stick shooter. There's a layer of strategy underneath the run and gun gameplay that feels really rewarding. The visuals are great, the effects and weapons are cool, and screen just gets flooded with enemies. Seeing the screen literally turn red with blood and gore is very satisfying but I think the coolest aspect is how the varied enemies require you to totally change your tactics and influences the weapons and perks you'd want to use. It's not like some shooters where you can just get the most powerful weapon and kill everything. Even after 12 years, this game still holds up among the best in the genre.
Crimzon Clover - $2.49 (75% off)
ZyPm8rN.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/285440
The best 2D shooter on Steam, no questions asked. Will remain the best one until Cave gets off their arses and ports their games to Windows, or till someone manages to convince ZUN there's a market for Touhou games outside of Japan. The ratio of explosions per second, especially in the double break mode, is something that no amount of words can describe properly. If you have any interest in arcade type shmups, buy this game this instant!
Crypt of the NecroDancer - $4.94 (67% off)
YCdyekR.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/247080
Roguelike meets rhythm game. It's one of those crazy concepts that sound too outlandish to work, but damn, does Crypt of the NecroDancer succeed on every level. The fantastic soundtrack. The different classes, each with their strengths and weaknesses to master. The myriad pick-ups, from weapons with different ranges and attack patterns to armor and equipment. The blend of the roguelike's tactical positioning and brutal challenge with the fast-paced arcadey thrill of dodging and moving to the beat.
Daedalus - No Escape - $1.59 (80% off)
hE2qqFL.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/315830
This game manages to capture the pace and feel of an arena shooter better than might think possible in a top-down arena shooter with plenty of modes and very polished and well thought out gameplay.
Danmaku Unlimited 2 - $0.99 (80% off)
Gx4GMib.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/280560
Lovely bullet hell shooter game, with some out of this world music by Japanese indie band Blankfield. Don't let the fact that it's a mobile port discourage you, it plays just as good on a PC as it did on iPhone. Good difficulty progression, making this a good title to start your journey into the field of manic shooters.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/218410
If anyone is a Tower Defense fan I highly recommend Defenders Quest: Valley of the Forgotten. It has some interesting RPG mechanics such as instead of towers you have party members which level up and have skill trees. The game also has a good sense of humor. I'm currently in the new game+ mode with 30+ hours played and I'm still having a blast
Divinity II: Developer's Cut - $3.99 (80% off)
Ofr1kZX.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/219780
Easily among the best RPGs of recent years, no clue why it sort of was stuck as a sleeper hit for so long. Plenty of content, well thought out level design with rewarding exploration, challenging combat, YOU ARE A DRAGON, nice balance between serious story writing and humor and just overall a game that draws you in and is just a joy to play. Awesome game.
DLC Quest - $0.98 (67% off)
JXDyF2I.jpg
A highly aware satire themed game based on the exploitation of DLC. Benefits from being short and to the point. Genuine laughs.
Don't Starve - $3.74 (75% off)
EMQtLcL.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/219740
A game about staying alive, and it won't be easy. If hunger doesn't kill you, insanity, poison, harsh weather or the mean shit that lurks at night will. Explore the map to find various terrains containing unique resources and creatures. Craft tools, weapons, equipment and structures. Develop new technologies. Maybe even build a base complete with buildings, decorations and self-sustaining farms. Basically, just do whatever it takes to stay alive.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/248610
Top down tactical SWAT simulator. Simple intuitive controls, great visuals, a lot of depth and tactics at your disposal. May be Early Access, but it's up there with Prison Architect and Broforce, as one of the few that feel like complete games getting regular content updates.
Dungeon Hearts - $0.74 (75% off)
ZJDzNJs.jpg
Dungeon Hearts fuses the strategy and pattern matching of puzzle games with the kinetic pace of action games. Align magical runes as they flow along the Fatestream to attack, defend, and conjure magic in frenetic battles against a bestiary of fantastic creatures out to use those same runes against you.
Dungeon of the Endless - $4.07 (66% off)
cJg3o88.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/249050
Early access, but since yesterday finally in Beta and feature complete. Its a really cool mix of tower defense and roguelike gameplay with a huge amount of polish. The visual are superb, the interface is really well done and the music creates the atmosphere needed to create an experience everyone should give a try eventually. Might be a tad expensive now, but keep it on your wishlists, here is a gameplay video I did which should explain the core mechanics: [ur]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4wXG0r79bM
DungeonMans - $7.49 (50% off)
LIYilWB.jpg
It has all the staples you would expect from a Roguelike like unidentified potions/scrolls, varied classes/skills, lots of death, plenty of loot to find and turn-based combat.
Dungeons Gold (Dungeons 1 + 2 + DLC) - $7.49 (75% off)
ss_f3d00d6b883ffa5da28e20150db5113ec227a787.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/14853
I wouldn't say that this is my favorite game/series ever, but I do think that it is way too overlooked and discriminated against. What it all comes down to, is basically a kind of reverse tower defense. Not only in theme (since you are the badboy slaying the heroes), but also in mechanics. Your placed "towers" exist only to satisfy the needs of the ones you need to kill. More input in the OT: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=482175
Dungeons of Dredmor - $3.49 (50% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/15933
This is the first roguelike that has ever managed to really grab me (aside from Desktop Dungeons). It has a perfect blend of accessibility to ease you into the game with the same depth and difficulty that you would expect from a roguelike. The graphics are not stunning, but they are a good step up from most of the roguelike genre. As an extra bonus the game has been updated several times by the developer with reasonably priced DLC and the game has Steam Workshop support for user added content.
Dust: An Elysian Tail - $2.99 (80% off)
dustearlycombo7mbgoj4i.gif
http://store.steampowered.com/app/236090
A platforming and adventure game in the vein of Castlevania and Metroid with a surprisingly wonderful story and highly satisfying combat. The scenery is gorgeous too. Someone put it nicely into words: "There are games which you just need to see in motion yourself". I wasnt interested in this game much, but it looks GREAT in motion and plays better than what I'd expect judging from the screenshots. Definitely one of my surprise highlights last month in the indie thread.
Dustforce - $2.49 (75% off)
dustforce_d-2011-09-12-20-57-16-85.png
http://store.steampowered.com/app/65300
One of the best platformers on Steam. If you are familiar with super meat boy, this game offers the same level of hardcore gameplay, that never feels frustrating due to the near instant respawns and tight level design. Dustforce however carves its own niche due to the added depth offered by the combat (light and heavy attacks) and the ability to dash, once you get the hang of every level it's crazy how fast and fluidly you can move through it. The aesthetic for the game is wonderful and it's worth buying the game for the soundtrack alone, seriously.
Dyad - $2.99 (80% off)
WvyOfXZ.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/223450
Abstract action game where you fly down a tunnel avoiding, collecting and shooting various things (each level is different). The sound and visuals are very well done, but the intricacies of the mechanics are what really impressed me.
E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy - $2.49 (75% off)
qkLCbeU.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/91700
Imagine if a gothic Deus Ex was made by crazy French developers on acid. This is a first person shooter with an insane aesthetic, fun gameplay, tons of varied action with an almost nonsensical story (mostly due to poor translation). Worth checking out.
Eador: Masters of the Broken World - $3.99 (80% off)
RwXClKb.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/232050
A turn-based strategy and tactics game (think HoMM) set in a fantasy world. This game is just as a good, if not better than HoMM3 (i.e REALLY, REALLY good if you're a fan of the genre), it's basically a remake of Eador: Genesis, which only released on gog. The main issues are launch technical issues which may be patched out, but it's seriously one of the best strategy games available if you look past that and the janky animations.
Echo of the Wilds - $4.49 (50% off)
4yq2Ztg.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/305780
Its one of those games where its best if you dive into it yourself and just explore the mechanics and game world instead of hearing too much about it. Its basically a mystery survival game. In the best survival game fashion, this requires you to collect stone, berries and wood to eventually make better equipment and improve on your normal and simple daily routines. However the game is far from being standard with an inventive campaign progress, mystery elements and a puzzle-style approach to progress, which has you figuring out just... how the game even works. Its one of the most interesting and intriguing games this year offered and if the idea of exploring a world and its mechanics sounds interesting to you, give this game a whirl.
Eidolon - $7.50 (50% off)
hDlLzdj.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/286140
The Journey in Eidolon is yours to make. Rarely is a game this brave when it comes to leaving the game to be explored by the player himself. Even though there is a survival system, hunting, fishing, items that allow for more abilities, a story to follow... the strength of the game doesnt necessarily lie in that traditional kind of progress. This game makes you want to explore like rarely any other. Haunting nights, simplistic and equally beautiful day and night shifts and a sense of "belonging". This game deserves to be heralded for its efforts to deviate from open world norms, which put more and more emphasis on flashy side attractions and instead focuses on the meditative beauty of the journey... your journey.
Eldritch - $1.49 (90% off)
ctlfOav.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/252630
Eldritch is a Lovecraftian dungeon delver inspired by the normal slew of Rouglike's and Voxel graphics. What really sets this game apart from others of it's kind are the expansive levels and how you traverse through them. Being able to look down into the horror that you have to jump into from above is something not often seen in randomly generated dungeon explorers. The up and down traversal gives a whole new dimension (hurr hurr) to combat and exploration.
Endless Legend - $10.19 (66% off)
4NV94ix.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/289130
It's a 4X game made by the same developers of Endless Space and Dungeon of the Endless, so it's a pretty easy game to get into the genre if you don't have any previous experience. While the universe is the same of the previous games you don't need to have played them to actually enjoy it.
Endless Space - $5.99 (80% off)
az0UMcD.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/208140
A 4X game in the vein of the civilization series. While it doesnt offer the overall depth of games like Civilization 4 and Galactic Civilization 2, its still a pretty good game in its own right. Due to the lowered complexity level and the fantastic UI, I consider it rather beginner friendly and although I like complexity in my games, still an enjoyable game overall if I want a relaxing round of 4X. If your sole purpose of playing these games is complexity, then you might want to hold off however, since other games (GalCiv2) did a better job in that regard.
English Country Tune - $0.49 (90% off)
xvWdWMJ.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/207570
Fantastic puzzle game that will challenge your spatial perception in various imaginative and interesting ways. Has been described as '3D Sokoban' by some, but there's a lot more to it as you'll soon realize when more of the game's many mechanics are introduced. It also looks great, runs on all platforms (Win/Mac/Linux) and is insanely cheap!
Escape Goat 2 - $3.99 (60% off)
MEMNLmG.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/255340
Escape Goat 2 is a very focused (single room design) puzzle game with a ton of variety and challenging levels. The bright colours and cute animations make it as approachable as some puzzle mechanics make it devious. The game encourages cautious exploration, poking unlabelled buttons from a distance and looking before you leap. With almost no filler and plenty of inventive optional puzzles, this is one of the best puzzle games to have played this year.
Eschalon: Book I (&II) - $4.01 (33% off)
5pNdz4E.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/25600
Old School RPG with a HUGE map, dozens of dungeons, hundreds of items, strategic gameplay that you wont just be able to *clickclickclick* yourself through. Fantastic classic style Indie RPG with interesting lore that really deserves a closer look. The only reason why it has some rather low votes is the presentation, UI and graphics. If you can look beyond that - recommended.
Everyday Genius: SquareLogic - $2.99 (40% off)
ss_a32ee0cdf7b8429c67cf2cb706ef9552307e6dcf.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/207400
2nd best SHMUP on Steam, after Jamestown. Amazing rock music by japanese indie legend, Saitama Saishuu Heiki. The 2nd game is also worth trying, though it uses the Ikaruga scheme (two colors of bullets, two colors of player character, when you're white, only black bullets hurt you, and vice versa) which might not be up to everyone's liking
Fearless Fantasy - $3.49 (50% off)
Gb7lCWt.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/282100
Challenge based RPG with time based action combat. The mouse gesture combat is very fun, since it keeps the player on his toes and rewards with coins and experience for equipment and skill upgrades. I also love the enemy designs. Unfortunately, I feel like I am really missing the actual RPG world around it and its a bit of a shame that the game is only about those combat challenges, even if the combat itself is fun enough. If you just want to slice and dice some very imaginatively looking baddies, this one might be for you.
FEZ - $2.49 (75% off)
9WSccfh.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/224760
Phil Fish's doucheyness aside, this game sets a new bar for what puzzle games can be. Its a tremendous effort in creating true mystique and curiosity in the players head. Considering it is probably the best and most spectacular game in its genre, you owe it to yourself to check it out at one point, even though you might already have been afflicted with Puzzle Platforming fatigue.
Flame Over - $2.39 (80% off)
cTMEfqU.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/345080
Fight fires in this action roguelike. Save people from flaming buildings, as you race the clock and gain better gear.
Fly'N - $2.99 (70% off)
jfJLoiS.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/223730
Fly’N is a PC platformer in which players control four original characters with their own complementary abilities. They are the guardians of the World-Trees: the Buds. It’s only by combining and by playing with their powers that the Buds will be able to find the right path when the situation seems impossible.
Fotonica - $1.79 (82% off)
CMFfc17.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/253290
Fotonica is as simple as it is challenging. All you need is one (any) button to run and jump through a course. As simplistic as this sounds, the game proves to be really difficult. It is about finding and memorizing the right path through a level, mastering tight jumps and at times demands split-second reactions.
Fract OSC - $3.74 (75% off)
FnMVLE1.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/243220
FRACT OSC is one of the best original games released on Steam in a long time. It is abundantly clear that it has been created by a team that shares an equal passion for both music and games, and its unique concept and gorgeous, vibrant world deserve to be explored by as many people possible. If you’re in ownership of functioning eyes and ears and have the willingness of just exploring a world for its secrets, then you owe it to yourself to play this game.
Fractal: Make Blooms Not War - $1.04 (85% off)
995rqYD.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/61310
Fractals is a bit more of a traditional puzzle game (basically a "match 7" puzzle game), but the gameplay mechanic of pushing stones outward and building combos is so elegant and straightforward, yet can seem deviously difficult once they add another element to the mix. Fun game. I highly recommend the Fractals + Splice bundle ($5,99) for anyone liking puzzle games.
Frozen Synapse - $2.49 (90% off)
ss_c98fcd0f34b3e19696439492ce135ffd721f55ba.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/98200
Best turn based MP game, that is easy to learn but difficult to master. Although the MP is clearly the highlight, it also has a solid single player campaign. The intricacies of this game will allow for plenty of interesting moves to outwit your enemy in the finest game of mind games I have come across so far. Made even more compelling with lots of usual and not so usual multiplayer options (for those of you who played Chess or Civ IV by email you'll get the idea). Great soundtrack and purchasing this game actually gives you TWO copies.
FTL - $3.99 (60% off)
R9KU5.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/212680
It is basically a Roguelike in space with some light sim aspects. And that roguelike aspect totally has its hooks in me. You start the game with 1 out of 18 ship designs available and try to get as far as you can for the highscore (or even beating the boss, but that will probably take a while), maybe unlocking other ships in the meantime. One of the biggest game surprises of the recent years and an absolute must play at this price point. There is a reason why so many people are in love with this game.
Full Bore - $3.74 (75% off)
rFT0e8K.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/264060
Among the more expensive games on this list, but considering it landed on the top spots of my GOTY 2013 list, you should probably still at least put it on your wishlist for the potential daily deal. Full Bore is massively awesome. Since the exploration is basically mostly based on your own curiosity, most of the game feels really open. I also love how the game constantly rewards you with hidden rooms and secrets if you decide to go out of your way and try to figure out how to reach that far off ledge over there. The controls take a bit getting used to, because the game is very fluid, yet grid-snapped, meaning you dont control the movement directly, but rather just push the character to one of the adjacent grids. Easily among the best puzzle platformers of the past 5 years and easily worth the price for 40 hours of content.
Gateways - $1.24 (75% off)
1p1Ne55.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/216290
Portal meets Braid meets Metroid. Non-linear platforming with portal mechanics and time manipulation. Gets *very* difficult by the end. . The main claim to fame of it? Is it has powerups like a portal gun which allow you to travel through walls. As you can see from the screens, it can all get you a bit "mentally guard broken" even early on.
Gemini Rue - $3.39 (66% off)
TwHAsI0.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/80310
Azriel Odin, ex-assassin, arrives on the rain-drenched planet of Barracus. When things go horribly wrong, he can only seek help from the very criminals he used to work for. Meanwhile, across the galaxy, a man called Delta-Six wakes up in a hospital with no memory. Without knowing where to turn or who to trust, he vows to escape before he loses his identity completely.As fate brings these two closer together, we discover a world where life is cheap, identities are bought and sold, and a quest for redemption can change the fate of a whole galaxy.
Glitchspace - $9.74 (25% off)
gPLve22.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/290060
An early access title that still misses quite a bit of content, yet still interesting enough to include here. Why? The sale price is cheap enough to warrant giving the game a try because its a really quite fabulous concept. Through manipulating the properties of certain objects, you will be able to overcome obstacles and create new paths. If you have an interest in programming concepts in game design, you really should check this out.
Gnomoria - $3.99 (50% off)
7KMt2zs.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/224500
Gnomoria is basically an easier accessible version of Dwarf Fortress due to an easier decipherable UI and mouse integration. For $4, you get dozens hours of sim goodness in which you need to make sure your gnome settlement is thriving and able to fend of invaders.
Goat Simulator - $2.49 (75% off)
gdmlFvZ.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/265930
All my life I have been empty. The doctors could not tell me why I was so depressed, and I never knew myself until today. I needed to experience my life as a goat. Goat Simulator has filled the void in my life. If you feel like something is missing from your life, this might just be it.
Grand Ages: Rome - $2.49 (75% off)
k7ioDgn.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/23450
A city builder game with a big focus on combat, next to the standard city creation. Its not necessarily the best game in the genre, but among the best modern ones and an absolute steal for $2. Unfortunately, this type of game died more or less in the PC scene and only has some watered down iOS equivalents once in a while. If you never dealt with these games, I recommend reading some impressions over here: <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=417484" target="_blank">http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=417484</a>
http://store.steampowered.com/app/275390
Gundemonium Collection - $1.99 (80% off)
ss_e02ceeacf1efcb611a43905e7977827be0ec897c.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/11712
Only 50% off, but Steam isn't exactly loaded with good bullet hell SHMUPs so I'll recommend this as well. Has three fun Japanese indie shooters, the first two being side scrollers (the second one is the only game in the collection with a two player mode) and the last one being a top down shooter. Some good bullet patterns and interesting mechanics on display here.
Gunpoint - $2.49 (75% off)
Gunpoint-2-008.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/206190
Gunpoint is a sidescrolling stealth action game with puzzle elements that delivers on satisfying stealth mechanics with a film noir attitude. You'll be tasked with missions for which you need to plan and execute an infiltration plan, take out the guards (or avoid them completely), execute your objectives and then safely return to your home. The most interesting feature of the game that will give it a lot of replayability is the ability to "cross-wire" electric circuits. This allows you , for example, to change a light switch to operating a door or a light on a completely different floor. This allows for a variety of shenanigans with the reactions of the guards and technical possibilities, which makes the levels almost feel a little sandbox in itself. Plus level editor!
Guns of Icarus Online - $4.99 (50% off)
yNfExIa.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/209080
Hop aboard a steampunk airship with three friends and blow other airships out of the sky. There are three classes to choose from - Pilot, Engineer, Gunner - and teamwork and cooperation are paramount to success. Relatively easy to learn, but has an enormous skill ceiling.
Half Minute Hero: The second coming - $1.99 (80% off)
CL1JFcO.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/240970
You have 30 seconds to save the world from being destroyed! Do quests, help people, destroy the evil and much more in under 30 seconds.
Hammerfight - $1.24 (75% off)
rVatqoK.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/41100
Hammerfight is a gladiatorial helicopter game set in a wild sci-fantasy world. It's a got a huge amount of content packed in, all unlocked through playing the (surprisingly) deep campaign. The mouse-driven physics-based gameplay requires both skill and precision and is a whole lot of fun, provided you find a comfortable mouse sensitivity setting. It's really something you need to play to believe.
Hardland - $7.49 (50% off)
nXTSlPIl.png
http://store.steampowered.com/app/321980
Open world RPG with a gorgeous colorful art style. Transform into a bird, explore snowy plains and dense forest, and face supernatural foes
Hatoful Boyfriend - $2.49 (75% off)
jKg22uw.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/310080
Hatoful Boyfriend shouldn't be as amazing as it is. It's a visual novel about dating pigeons and yet, that's almost just a cover for the game hiding inside. Hatoful Boyfriend is ridiculous and hilarious, but it's also shockingly dark and well written. It went places I'd have never imagined it would attempt, and pulled it off with astounding grace and sincerity. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with birds and never stopped being stunned with every passing line and revelation. It's exactly and not at all what it looks like, and it's insane that it actually works.
Hexcells Plus - $0.89 (70% off)
ik9Pktc.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/271900
Hexcells Plus is technically the 2nd game in the "series". If you need to be slowly eased into puzzle games, consider checking out Hexcells first, otherwise dive right into the more intricate "plus" version, which is basically Hexcells 2. The actual gameplay revolves around taking numerical clues to solve levels, a bit similar like Minesweeper, just with more rules and way more style. Fantastic puzzle game.
Highlands - $5.09 (66% off)
ss_09b8fbe9d205ff9087d96e4418c1ec3c564c6d1a.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/359920
This is a surprise, I went into the game totally blind only knowing it was a turn based game that was funded via Kickstarter. The first thing that drew my attention was the game's art, be it the well done hand drawn environment and the charismatic characters and this helps making each level feel unique. Another good point are the musics and sound in the game, both are great and help setting the right mood to your play session.
Intrusion 2 - $3.99 (60% off)
355355_intrusion2_screenshot_18_medium.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/214970
I got this as part of a Humble Bundle, just got around to it, and I'm having quite a bit of fun. It's a sci-fi action platformer. Plays like an old-school run n' gun (e.g. Metal Slug) with a focus on physics. Also, you can ride a wolf.
Ironclad Tactics - $2.99 (80% off)
kAmDZTv.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/226960
The basic game is this mix of card battler and tabletop wargame where you have to summon these war machines and drive them over the grid map to the opponents side before they do the same to you. The thing that stops it from being all out mad is you get action points every turn which dictates how strong the cards you can use are. Overall though, I would say it&#8217;s a real cool game with a lot of potential character and strategy and there is a ton of single player content here to roll through and its quite amazing how deep the customization tactics can go if you try to equip a deck for a certain level or even a certain task within a level to unlock more cards.
Jets'n'Guns - $2.79 (60% off)
tYAiaV2.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/262260
Jets'n'Guns is a Shoot Em Up, also called a 2d sidescrolling space shooter. There's also a good selection of bombs and missiles. And its glorious.
It is worth mentioning that the game uses no text and speech at all.
Kentucky Route Zero - $12.49 (50% off)
3Fc3Tgr.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/231200
Kentucky Route Zero has already established itself as one of the most lauded narrative experiences of 2013. The story of Conway, the truck driver, and his odyssey through the dark, surreal streets and lanes of Kentucky is a mysterious, "magic-realistic" wonder. It manages to pull in the player like few games do, as you stumble from one encounter to the next, baffled and perplexed, bewildered and reverent. Two (free) mini-episodes, titled 'Limits and Demonstrations' and 'The Entertainment', set between episode 1 and 2 respectively, offer further material to immerse yourself in. Enthrallingly written and beautifully realised, Kentucky Route Zero is well on its way to becoming a modern classic of the genre.
Your favorite horror movies, now playable as a humorous gory adventure game. In the current episode, you'll have to defeat a killer in a lakeside camp, and future episodes will see you facing cannibalistic families and even going to space.
La-Mulana - $2.99 (80% off)
e0Q5DZ3.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/230700
La-Mulana is a remake of one the first games NIGORO released. Its an impressively deep Metroidvania game that will surprise you if you go into it blind. The setup and upgrade mechanics are damn well made and certainly worth the praise the game gets. It seems heavily inspired by Indiana Jones and 8-bits platformers games, an influence you can see in the lack of the control during the jump and the unforgiving difficulty of the game. At $15 its a bit of a hard sell, but for $4? Grab it.
Legend of Fae - $4.99 (50% off)
Legend of Grimrock 2 is a role-playing adventure in the style of Dungeon Master. An entire Island is waiting to be explored. An island crawling with monsters, traps and hidden secrets. Fighting alone won't get you anywhere, for the riddles that await are truly fiendish, requiring quite out-of-the-box thinking in parts. So if you like solving riddles without the game holding your hand, making it past fiendish traps and exploring an unknown place, then this game is for you!
You need to position yourself carefully, pay attention to the boom box, time your moves right and trick your foes by mixing it up with parries, steals, bunts and supers. If you enjoy fighting games, particularly the likes of Super Smash Bros, there's a good chance you'll have many good laughs with this one!
A single player game about tinkering, experimenting and breaking systems, where you put together spell components to form essentially infinite numbers of unique spells. It has a satisfying progression cycle like good diablo clones. You'll start off casting fireballs then end the game with homing branching armor penetrating laser fists that spawn minions. Brilliant and addictive. Figure out how not blow up the scene. If it means shoving something up someone's @$$ it's all good or least within the developers demented consciousness it is. Fail and repeat until you get the solution right. Doesn't make sense, doesn't matter, worth a chuckle or two. Customized visuals through filters is a sweet touch.
Men of War - $1.24 (75% off)
0000008590.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/7830
Men of War is both an RTS and one of the fiddliest beasts to control that I have ever seen. So what makes up for that? The combination of unit detail (each unit has their own inventory and equipment) and Direct Control (you can take over and directly control the action of an individual unit on the battlefield) leads to incredibly emergent gameplay when trying to accomplish the missions. You'll always remember that one mission where after your T-34 got knocked out by a Panzerfaust you took direct control of one surviving tank crew member, grabbed and equipped a rifle from a dead German, took out the crew of a neighboring 88 flak gun, and used the last remaining AT rounds in that gun to knock out an approaching German Panzer to save the mission.
You have to create and manage underground lines and trains to get passengers between stations, and it's quite a rewarding experience to see your creation when you've lots of stations on screen, all connected up and delivering efficiently. The design of the game is so simple, pretty and just amazing to stare at once things get moving. The city never stops moving.
MirrorMoon EP - $1.79 (82% off)
69zPHDn.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/231310
Mirrormoon EP is not about story or complex gameplay or moral choices or brain-twisting puzzles. It's about discovery. From the moment you start, you're immersed in an abstract universe that begs to be explored. It's hard to talk about Mirrormoon's gameplay, for some aspects are best discovered on one's own, but the puzzle, while slightly repetitive, are not the focus. The highlight is exploring and in that aspect, Mirrormoon is a resounding success. The game is a visual masterpiece that, combined with the wonderful yet alien soundtrack, invokes a sense of awe every time you explore and witness a new abstract landscape.
Moonbase Commander - $1.49 (75% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/254880
One of those games that I loved yet ended up being criminally overlooked. One way to describe this would be Worms with base building. You don't have units, you have buildings which fling out other buildings and fire projectiles. Each building is connected to the one that launched it, so your eventually end up with a sprawling mass of stuff everywhere. Watch out, though, as when a building gets destroyed, it takes out any buildings that it created. Great fun to make a lucky shot on someone's very first building and watch the chain reaction take out their entire base
NaissanceE - $4.79 (68% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/265690
NaissanceE is easily one of my favorites of 2014 so far, thanks to its masterfully crafted, unsettling atmosphere. The platforming is solid, but it's the tension of exploring such a weird otherworldly place that made NaissanceE such an enjoyable experience for me.
Symbolic game for the resurgence of local MP. Its VERY fun if you meet the requirements: Xbox controller or keyboards to play & at least one couch VS friend to play with. Unfortunately, the price is a bit steep for an MP only game with only 4 levels, but if you have someone over to battle with, this game can get REALLY fun.
Nimbus - $2.49 (75% off)
Noitu Love 2 is a charming little action game where the two big draws are the fantastic pixel art and the unique mouse + keyboard control scheme. Your character has a fast airdash that is aimed with the mouse cursor, so when you get into a flow you can rack up huge combo points while screaming around a level without even touching the ground.
Pretty enjoyable and easygoing puzzle-platformer underneath which lies basically another game that is as merciless as Super Meat Boy and I've only realized that because it got achievements added not that long ago. Beating the original 100 levels took me maybe 2-2.5 hours, it took as much to unlock the next 10 levels and I don't know when I'm gonna unlock the last 10 because they're hard as fuck compared to the rest.
One Finger Death Punch - $2.49 (50% off)
Vz8936b.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/264200
Don't be fooled by the visuals or simple controls. One Finger Death Punch is one of the most addictive satisfying games I've played, with flashy combat and great animations. It perfectly captures the feeling of being an unstoppable martial arts badass
One Way Heroics - $0.87 (75% off)
hoHJ7ga.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/266210
The most interesting game from the roguelike game design school since FTL. A huge amount of modes, a unique premise, tons of unlockable goodies/skills/classes and some persistent upgrades make this a game you wont easily stop playing once you started. Perfectly hits the balance between challenge and accessibility, everyone should check this out.
Oniken - $0.49 (90% off)
xLYc4Ix.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/252010
This game absolutely feels like it came right out of the late 80's NES but with fine tuned controls. Everything about it screams classic from the NES style color palette that neatly separates foreground from background and makes sure enemies stand out clearly to the hard as balls platforming and combat, to the sparse checkpoints and lives and unforgiving boss battles that can crush you in an instant if you don't learn their patterns.
Original War - $0.99 (80% off)
ftrUOmK.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/235320
Original War is a game from 2001, but considering the death of classic RTS and the remaster of this hidden gem, its a perfect time to reintroduce it to a new set of gamers. It was very quietly developed in the waning days of RTS popularity and developers were first trying to do something a little different. It is the quintessential "Gem" for any fans of the genre. The art style is unique and clever, fantastic music and the concept was innovative. You don't train new men in the traditional sense; you have a finite amount of men, and you can build vehicles part by part (chassis, turret, fuel source) and train local fauna (aka cavemen) to join your cause. If you miss singleplayer RTS, you need to give this game a try (and dont trust the "professional" reviews).
Paper Sorcerer - $0.99 (80% off)
1MSK6qt.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/263560
The game is a visually unique dungeon crawler in which you travel in a party of four and beat several dungeon levels, which get incrementally bigger and more perilous. Its rare that an Indie game wows me visually and I really like it. It oozes with charme, it has plenty of content in the campaignand is an overall very competent dungeon crawler with some minor flaws in the actual puzzle design, but overall its a joy to play even it wont kick Legend of Grimrock from its recent & pretty Dungeon crawler throne. Still, Paper Sorcerer is a bit easier to play and easier accessible and I frequently went back to explore more of this world. Definitely recommended.
Papers, Please - $3.99 (60% off)
OdZ1uWC.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/239030
Strip away all its other elements and Papers, Please would still be a fun game of logic and matching. But amidst the story and premise, that simple game of logic and studying documents becomes a thoughtful experience with surprising emotional resonance. From your tiny booth, you hold incredible power; with your stamp of approval, you can allow the tired huddled masses into your country or turn them away. At its core, that's the extent of the gameplay: look for discrepancies and signs of errors and forgeries, interrogate the suspicious citizens, and make your decision. But Papers, Please is so much more than that. From your little window slot and desk, you become the linchpin in fates both big and small, from the entire country to the individuals before you to your very family.
Papo & Yo - $2.24 (85% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/227080
Affected by a personal childhood experience of the game's director abusive relationship with his father, action-adventure game set in a magical world of Brazilian favelas, suffused with child's imagination and visual splendor, that shows strong resemblance to ICO.
Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4 - $0.49 (90% off)
7yQ5BSf.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/237570
This isnt a game you should buy or avoid because of the Penny Arcade name attached to it. The developers Zeboyd, however, are reason enough to look into this game. Classic nostalgia overload RPG goodness with contemporary humor and sweet pixelart. Easy recommendation.
It's a top down shooter where you control 4 randomly generated mercenary clones, all at once, and you blast your way through randomly generated derelict ships shooting everything you see and using some really inventive and weird grenades to help you blow the shit out of everything. Great soundtrack. Simple and fun, but short game. Worth it on a deep sale.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/227000
Set in a post-apocalyptic world strewn with cast-off machines, Primordia tells the story of Horatio Nullbuilt, a stoic robot who values his solitude and independence. Horatio spends his days studying the Book of Man, sparring with his droid companion Crispin, and tinkering with the airship they call home &#8212; a peaceful existence that becomes threatened when a rogue robot steals the energy source that the pair needs to survive.
Prison Architect - $17.99 (40% off)
ABo8vX8.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/233450
A game that embraces its early access state. The devs still add content and mechanics to this game, but even in the current state, you can lose hours creating well thought out prisons, only to forget ordering enough security for the relocation of a dangerous criminal, which kills his one guard, runs to the kitchen, grabs a knife and slaughters half of the other inmates before you notice what happened. This is a very unique game, that unfortunately is priced higher than it probably should be, but if this gets a low sale, do pick it up.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/222140
Q.U.B.E. Director's Cut - $2.49 (75% off)
gOgfMWE.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/239430
Isolated puzzle game, very much in a similar style to the original portal game. You play a silent protagonist stuck inside a QUBE, you have a glove that can activate colour squares within this QUBE. You basically navigate through and solve puzzles, some are head scratchers but with trial and error you will get there eventually. Really enjoyed it.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/234190
Great gunplay and how you treat the guns is realistic. It was part of a seven day FPS game jam challenge last year and the developers added some content to it and, through Greenlight, got it on Steam. FPS roguelike with ultra-detailed gun mechanics and future robots and mindkills. Yes.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/212050
In Retro/Grade, you start at the end of the game and work yourselves backwards, you avoid enemy fire and you position your ship to where your shots are coming backwards in reverse. The game is played backwards so you have to undo actions in the game instead of playing it forward. It's all timed to a rhythm, so it's really a music game.
Reus - $1.99 (80% off)
unlLTjV.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/222730
It is a mixture of a god game,a puzzle game and some 4X elements thrown in (research, expansion, war). Not directly a puzzle game, but how you need to make sure that your village prospers with limited amount of space and within the scope of that, there seem to be tons of possibilities for different plants, animals, minerals, which all have a different symbiosis to something to enhance the effect, giving it a bit of a 4X touch as well. All this helps developing your villages, which in turn is needed to advance the powers of your giants. Its really slick and charming and considering the surprising amount of variation and possibilities (100 plants). They really managed to give this game a special touch.
Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood - $1.59 (80% off)
sQfVvKC.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/46560
One of the best Commandos clones. You have a group of people with different skills that you will need to coordinate properly to avoid enemies or take them out without making a huge commotion. I guess you could describe these games sort of as squad based top down stealth games.
Rock of Ages - $1.99 (80% off)
RIxWsWW.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/22230
It's a mix between a tower defense and strategy. You need to kill the enemy leader that is inside the base while defending your own, you can put obstacles to slow the enemy boulder and minimize the damage you'll receive. Your boulder is controlled by you, avoiding the enemy traps and trying to keep your speed is essencial to maximize the damage you can deliver. Also the artstyle is very nice.
Rocketbirds - $1.49 (85% off)
Crass and violent in the best way. It's not the best sidescrolling shooter you'll ever play, but it has more style than most.
Rogue Legacy - $2.24 (85% off)
ncBsJmV.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/241600
Very likely the best Indie Action game in the past few years. The game doesn't do anything crazy with its rogue elements. Sure, the 'Legacy' part of the equation is fun until you've seen all the quirky traits your character can inherit - but that's not why you'll stay and keep playing. The game instead aims to make your character progression feel meaningful, while keeping things interesting with various classes, sub-weapons, abilities, items, loot, etc. There is no way you will not get further and further into the castle if you just keep at it. Thankfully, keeping at it becomes easy when a game feels ridiculously satisfying and is almost too charming for a product with 'rogue' in the title.
Runespell: Overture - $2.49 (75% off)
9vSIjdC.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/102200
Rymdkapsel - $3.99 (50% off)
YBpigKv.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/253790
A very stylish, spacy RTS-lite that has you commanding your little block men to mine resources, build, research and defend, with the ultimate goal of reaching and researching the four monoliths in each corner of the smallish map. It is well balanced and challenging, and the minimal graphics and excellent space synth soundtrack allow this game to succeed in both style and play.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/38440
It never was as popular as it deserved. A sort of real-time strategy game from ground level. You control a wizard trying to banish rival wizards by casting spells and summoning an army. While the graphics are definitely a little rough around the edges, the art style still holds up, 14 years later.
Savant - Ascent - $0.99 (50% off)
7MACh3B.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/259530
IndieStatik said its the best $2 you'll ever spend, so how about grabbing it now while its 50% off for $1? An action game that has you ascending a tower (no exploration) and kicking lots of monster butt with tight controls, skill upgrades and satisfying combat mechanics. Its a smaller game, but a smaller game you should take a look at.
Sentinel - $0.89 (70% off)
Xpu3LAa.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/293200
A tower defense game that deserves way more recognition than it actually gets. Just building towers wont get you anywhere. Your towers have energy levels that affect the performance of these towers and you will need to adjust these energy levels accordingly to allow for the best possible level progress (which is very challenging). It has some undeniable puzzle elements in that regard. The level design is also rather refreshing since it sometimes cleverly uses genre tropes against the player. E.g. Most powerful tower is always the best one to use? Wrong. Additionally, its a game I love playing for the soundtrack, to delve 20-30 minutes into these tracks and play a game that has been made with that soundtrack in mind. Its that good.
Sequence - $0.99 (80% off)
aDckPIr.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/200910
Sequence is a rhythm game RPG thing where you do battle by juggling three screens of DDR-style moving arrows-- one to block incoming damage, one to recover MP, and one to cast spells-- all set to an awesome soundtrack. There's also a fully-voiced story, crafting, etc etc. (Sequence was basically made by one man: NeoGAF's own Feep.)
Shadowrun: Returns - $2.99 (80% off)
V5YWNkX.png
http://store.steampowered.com/app/234650
Shadowrun: Dragonfall is a tactical, turn based RPG, set in a world of cyberpunk/magic. The game's story is the main selling point, featuring a really quite complex conspiracy cyberpunk mystery, that starts out as a tale of revenge and morphs into something much more fascinating. The characters you meet, from the rest of the team to the NPCs in the Kreuzbasar, are well written and very memorable. The theme is equally strong throughout, with great visuals of a broken down world, mixed with high tech and magic, aided by a top notch soundtrack.
Shatter - $1.99 (80% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/20820
Shelter - $2.49 (75% off)
vG5hNyx.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/244710
This is a very artistically presented, interactive story about a badger mom and her children. The mood of the levels changes throughout the story to reflect the different phases the player goes through. Its not quite as innovative as it was made out to be, but its a short journey well worth taking if you want to explore games that are a bit off the beaten path.
Shovel Knight - $10.04 (33% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/250760
Shovel Knight is a 8 bit'ish labor of love platformer, based on video game fundamentals such as exploring levels, finding secret paths and beating bosses, just like in the good old time. Superb level designs, interesting enemies and bosses, lots of secrets and optional paths, fantastic chip tune music, wonderful and tight gameplay and a bad-ass knight with a shovel.
Splice - $1.99 (80% off)
6rFzmXd.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/209790
Very slick and interesting puzzle game. I love puzzle games that dont just follow the match 3 formula and actually try something different. Its unfortunately not that long (50 or so main levels), but the idea of dividing cells to make them fit a pattern and making a puzzle game from that is just way too interesting not to mention it. Fantastic soundtrack too btw, and it also has a demo on Steam you can check out. In a bundle with 2 other interesting games (Auditorium and Fractal:Make blooms not war) for $5,99.
Starseed Pilgrim - $4.79 (20% off)
ibdsNy2URF82WA.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/230980
The basic gameplay revolves around growing "seeds", which then turn into structures that the player can traverse, but the process of finding out how to use these new found tools was so refreshingly unique and even mysterious, that I would consider it a recent gaming experience I wouldnt want to miss. What people take from games inevitably varies, but it showed me that I didnt lose the sense of wonder and curiousity that games instilled in me when I was younger.
Blocks fall from the top of the screen and you have to match three or more to make them vanish. Super Time Force Ultra - $3.74 (75% off)
9zjw2BF.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/250700
Super Time Force Ultra is as mechanically smart as its story is delightfully cheesy and self aware. It takes the foundation of a side-scrolling shooter and adds brilliantly executed time manipulation, allowing you to rewind after each death and fight alongside your previous character, compiling your firepower and potentially even saving your former life.
Super Win the Game - $1.19 (85% off)
TFZ5KSw.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/310700
Super Win The Game is a great homage to old school Metroidvania games. The world is big, with a lot of places to explore but at the same time the dev managed to make it compact, not overwhelming you with tons of near identical screens. You are never really lost because every area is designed in a very distinct way. Platforming, while tricky in some parts, is never really hardcore and should be no problem even for beginners. Super Win the Game is a little masterpiece. Managing to pull off feeling very "NES" while being extremely playable and keeping things fresh till the end.
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP - $1.59 (80% off)
iixNW52.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/204060
Play this game, people. Not quite like much I've played before, but if I had to categorize it, it's similar to a point and click adventure game, with some light combat. Very cool abstract game that incorporates some interesting social media features that break the fourth wall , great atmosphere/vibe, beautiful visuals, and fantastic electronic soundtrack from the great Jim Guthrie.
Surgeon Simulator 2013 - $1.99 (80% off)
The Swapper - $5.99 (60% off)
h4bV2nV.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/231160
Puzzle-platformer where you can clone yourself and swap bodies with the clones. As good as the gameplay is the atmosphere of the setting - an abandoned space station - is where the game really shines. The wonderful claymation graphics and sound design, combined with the questionable ethics of murdering your own clones, makes this a haunting experience.
The Talos Principle - $9.99 (75% off)
VMkx2bP.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/257510
The Talos Principle came out of nowhere to deliver a lengthy (20+ hours) puzzle adventure to deliver brain-twisting levels that test your spatial cognition skills. On top of that is an ambiguous tale of man-machine musings, religious dogma, existentialism, and hackers through a computer text adventure with enough levity to balance against such heady subject matter.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - $5.99 (70% off)
aBKVKer.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/258520
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is meant to be taken slowly, absorbed like a good book dripping with detail. The ending may not exactly be the most surprising and some may find themselves a little disappointed. But the journey towards it is full of heart and imagination. Much in the way that Ethan Carter himself is.
The Whispered World - $1.99 (90% off)
TWW%2011-620x.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/268540
One of the best and truest to the roots adventures when you liked the Sierra Adventures like Kings Quest VIII. Some Puzzles are a bit out of the world but you are definitely in for a treat. Its definitely my favorite adventure by FAR of the recent years. Actually I was thinking about creating an OT when it came out here, but it wasnt out in America yet and I wanted to wait. Well seems I missed that point. The game is great, has some unbelievably charming characters, smart puzzles (that get hard later on) and a very memorable ending. The Whispered World is a great, one of the best recent adventure games. Highly recommended. The voice of Sadwick is annoying though, so be warned.
They Bleed Pixels - $4.99 (50% off)
TAqWwUz.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/211260
This is a really damn good platformer. Good, but also devious, unforgiving, and rage-inducing. After every stage I finish, I can typically be heard muttering something about how ridiculous that shit just was. Even so, I'm almost immediately ready to jump back in. The controls are actually really tight, and the enemies pretty creative and dangerous. The soundtrack remains interesting throughout, and the fat pixel art is really appealing (and incredibly gory). Platforming feels very Super Meat Boy, but combine that with super fluid and varied combat and you have an absolute winner!
This War of Mine - $6.79 (66% off)
bCumMq7.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/282070
This War of Mine explored the horrors of war from a perspective not portrayed in the medium till now and delivered one of the most tense, gripping, and bleak experiences we played this year in a survival/roguelike/stealth package. A gutted war-torn city, all pencil-sketched shadows and ruined structures, reeking of desperation and hopelessness, as explosions thunder and flash ceaselessly outside. Overall, This War of Mine was just one hell of an engrossing, compelling, and atmospheric experience.
Thomas was alone - $2.99 (70% off)
Ee6QX8x.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/220780
Not very challenging, but with interesting different mechanics at play. Good soundtrack and narration and an engaging story which was surprising giving the genre and the characters presentation (geometric figures).
ss_dbf3b2b68801afa3ab5e0eae6c763a16d1f064bf.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/37400
Ben There, Dan That! and Time Gentlemen, Please! are a couple of rip-roaring point-and-click adventure games . With tongue firmly in cheek, sit back, relax, and put your mind to work solving puzzles, and reading some very funny dialogue. It's like a book, only good! From an horrific and untimely death in deep, dark Peru, via preposterous-and-suspect alien invasions, to whipping back-and-forth in time to stop Hitler and his army of robot Nazi dinosaur clones, this is one set of adventures you're unlikely to forget.
AhQ1qNk.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/206440
A story driven experience with a fantastic soundtrack. This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is. And Johnny's last wish is, of course... to go to the moon.
Toki Tori 2 - $0.74 (95% off)
Toki-Tori-2-PC-Wii-U-Steam-Two-Tribes-Puzzle-Platformer.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/201420
Toki Tori did a 180° for his sequel. If you loved the design of the first one, you'll like already have bought the second, but even for people (like me) who didnt like the puzzles of the first one, Toki Tori 2 is definitely worth a look. They changed the level based structure and very finicky puzzles to a bigger, more open world structure, inviting the player to explore.
Tower of Guns - $3.14 (79% off)
ss_4e814edd055656b741f71081bdbae614cacf1f9b.600x338.jpg
Quadruple-jumping steampunk bullet-hell mayhem. One of the best FPS roguelikes in the genre.
TowerFall Ascension - $7.49 (50% off)
WsVXybU.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/251470
Do you remember playing multiplayer games such as Goldeneye or Smash Bros. with friends for hours on end? TowerFall is that experience and more. Matches are fierce and exciting. They are the perfect length to allow players to rotate out without feeling too short. You&#8217;ll be cheering and yelling alongside everyone else as you wait for your turn. While multiplayer is the main focus, and is amazing, there is a substantial amount of single player content too. A tad expensive, but you should pick this up eventually.
Transistor - $3.99 (80% off)
ARfuaB2.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/237930
The art design and atmosphere is wonderful, the story is mysterious and compelling. But the gameplay is the best part. The game has a puzzle-like vibe. Positioning, what's the best ability to use, which enemies to prioritize, how to best utilize your limited action/energy, making sure you don't find yourself exposed at the end of a turn. Refining your abilities thanks to incredibly deep function system, mixing and matching new skills and finding your favorites. This is one of the greatest games released this year, with the only downside of it being a tad too short.
TRI: Of Friendship and Madness - $5.09 (66% off)
GLO3K04.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/293660
Tri is a very, very good game. Tri is yet another game that can be added to the list of already excellent first person puzzle games, like Portal and Q.U.B.E. It introduces a new gameplay mechanic that&#8217;s original and one that works surprisingly well, even in puzzle format. The mysterious atmosphere makes you want to keep playing and the increasingly difficult puzzles are (mostly) fun to solve. All in all this is a great game for puzzle enthusiasts.
Ultrabundle - $12.49 (50% off)
sOqWA3n.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/26433
d4hZEov.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/249330
Unholy heights is a doujin tower defense mixed with some management elements and a bit of devil simulator. It's a charming game where you need to manage an hotel for monsters, you need to decorate and improve the rooms to attract certain races. You can choose "quests" to bring more money to you but you need to prepare for the humans invaders that want kill the inhabitants and take your money.
Unity of Command - $2.99 (85% off)
f0t8rxw.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/218090
Accessible turn-based wargaming strategy influenced by classics such as Panzer General II. Fluid, easy to pick up and play. Managing supply lines as important as ensuring the right forces are in the right places. Well crafted and supported.
Velocity Ultra Deluxe - $1.99 (80% off)
2SsmZHr.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/244890
It starts out looking like a fairly simple scrolling shootemup, but there's a unique gameplay mechanic -- your ship can teleport to anywhere on the screen, baffling enemies and evading solid walls with ease. Combine that with the ability to long-range teleport to earlier locations in the level and the later stages turn into intricate puzzles. Not a terribly long game, but if you're interested in replay value, you can try to get the best times/medals on all 50 stages or defeat the aggravatingly difficult bonus levels. Overall a great time and highly recommended for the sale price.
Vessel - $2.99 (80% off)
SqKD3g2.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/108500
A puzzle/platformer game with one of the best gimmicks around, real-time water physics! It also has a nice art-style with a steampunk theme.
Everyone has likely already played this, but if not it's one of the most unique takes on a platformer I've played in years. The soundtrack is also mindblowingly good and worth playing the game for alone.
Winter Voices - $0.99 (80% off)
QiGKmTU.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/72900
A unique strategy RPG that is definitely undeservedly overlooked. Dont trust the Metacritics average, just looking at the user average makes it apparent that there is a 30% difference with the "professional" reviews. Its not a game for everyone, and if you are used to skinner box style gameplay progress, you wont be able to stand the slow progress and movement in this game. However, if you can stomach that, you might get to enjoy a very unique art style in a very uniquely themed SRPG.
Wizorb - $1.01 (66% off)
B.U.T.T.O.N. (Brutally Unfair Tactics Totally OK Now) - $2.99 (0% off)
WSxCPBC.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/92400
Considering the staggeringly low amount of party games on Steam, this one deserves a mention for being rare AND fun. The game asks you to do some actions, while trying to make sure that the others cant do them. The physicality of the gameplay and the evolving behaviour of anyone participating make this a great choice for a party game. However, make sure to play it with <i>good </i> friends, since there are some sex-related jokes/challenges as well.
Ballpoint Universe - Infinite - $3.99 (0% off)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/259390
Mix of platformer and Shooter with an incredibly evocative art style, even prettier in motion.
Bunny Must Die - $9.99 (0% off)
c7_ss.png
http://store.steampowered.com/app/250660
A great Metroidvania game with spoofs of both Metroid and Castlevania. Fairly hard and the movement takes some time to get used to but it's amenable to sequence breaking and speed running. Also has a very well developed and very different second quest.
Catacomb Kids - $15,99 (0% off)
5hrGC4J.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/315840/
Member of the new breed of action roguelikes and among the finest examples in the genre. Super challenging, varied, and after years of development nearing the high level polish and fun. Being desperate and throwing random potions at opponents, without knowing if you heal them or set them on fire never gets old.
Delve Deeper - $4.99 (0% off)
crfr8W0.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/63800
If we are just talking of Steam releases and the price its going for, this game is basically the definition of an underappreciated gem. Its basically a boardgame played it turns where its your task to secure as much gold as possible by placing board tiles, defeating enemies and being generally faster than your opponents. This game is playable in SP, but shines in local hotseat MP.
Diamond Dan - $4.99 (0% off)
HotF0Qe.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/70500
Awesome puzzle platformer based more on quick reflexes than logic. You descend towers of ever shifting blocks to find a map at the bottom and escape. Sounds simple, but you can be crushed or thrown from the tower, and many of the blocks are traps such as water/spike pits, projectiles or enemies living inside the wall who will pull you to your death.
Ephemerid: A Musical Adventure - $5.99 (0% off)
ZcmyjyWUgjUxCaoHeLY0RLveanBf-yO6deQwWYd4fJ8=w2048-h1280-no
http://store.steampowered.com/app/335920
Very cute musical journey, that is technically a rhythm game, but also... not really as the dev refrained from using genre-typical mechanics or even highscores. It simply focusses on telling a story that you rhythmically accompany. Even though it is rather short, neither complex nor challenging, its still a joy to play and an interesting game concept worth experiencing.
Everyday Shooter - $9.99 (0% off)
XxpvsHH.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/16300
One of the best shmups I ever played with a great artstyle, level design and fantastic soundtrack. I am still playing this game on and off after 3 years or something to FINALLY beat it eventually. Highly recommended if you have even only a slight interest in shmups.
Jamestown - $9.99 (0% off)
yKVU3jl.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/94200
Set to the backdrop of an alien invasion, this vertical shooter is filled with charm, beautiful pixel art and hectic energy. An excellent introduction to the bullet hell style with multiple difficulty levels (and more content available for the higher levels), and it also offers 4-player local multiplayer and 360 controller support. If you don't have it yet, get it!
Lunnye Devitsy (Lunar Bundle) - $4.99 (0% off)
aT464lT.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/26391
While Lunnye Devitsy is not a recent release, this little gem from Boss Baddie deserves all the attention it can get, even now. Published a couple of years ago in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, this starry-eyed puzzle platformer for the PC takes gamers on an interplanetary expedition like no other. Dripping with atmosphere, vast and interesting environmental design, innovative puzzles, beautiful and fitting soundtrack. Available in a pack with the game "Wake" for super cheap.
Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death - $4.99 (0% off)
ss_58446a98acc94af2fa723d5d7096e2f11fbb822f.600x338.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/249680
Marlow Briggs is killed by his girlfriend's evil boss, when he is resurrected by an off-kilter ancient mask that grants him incredible power. A 4-6 hour God of War romp with extremely fast pacing, varied turret sections and other quick setpieces. The 80's action movie style storyline is amusing in a self-aware way and the incidental dialogue during gameplay is on-and-off hilarious.
Mr. Robot - $9.99 (0% off)
oIApIpY.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/20710
You play Asimov, a humble serving robot aboard the spaceship Eidolon, where everything is going wrong a la System Shock: robot rebellions, crew hypersleep death, uppity artificial intelligences. Only, you're in an old school isometric 3D world, just like your sainted mother used to make back in the 1980s. Puzzles - challenging your mental and physical faculties, and occasionally even both - hamper your progress. And they're expertly, lovingly designed.
Out There - $9.99 (0% off)
Puzzle Quest 2 - $9.99 (0% off)
ClHtYg0.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/47540
The most complex and engaging match 3 gems puzzle game. Comparing with any other game in the genre, there is an unbelievable wealth of mechanics in this game, from battle skills, dungeon romping, equip and loot and lots more. If you want a match 3 game with more than just the basic gameplay, grab this.
Snapshot - $9.99 (0% off)
JxY6Qyy.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/204220
After finishing Snapshot, I can say its greater quality is the superb level design. Although the entire game being built around the use of the camera, the levels still bring something new until the very end. The majority of the objects are used only in a handful of levels before being dropped for something new, keeping the game always fresh. The game is very easy if you finish the level without completing any secondary goal, so I recommend to go after the secret objects and the stars for maximum enjoyment. The graphics, although simple, are a delight to look at, evocative of the 16bit era platformers.
Wake - $4.99 (0% off)
zrDXUoi.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/233530
A retro Metroidvania style game where you must escape a sinking ship. Explore various areas of the ship, learn the story of the crew and why the ship sunk, evade the rising water, raging infernos, and active security system, and make split second decisions that could take you closer to the surface or to a drowning death. This purchase also gives you Lunnar Devitsy.
Windosill - $2.99 (0% off)
2dcfUja.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/37600
Windosill is a digital pop-up book and a good enough price to be considered an overlooked and charming recommended deal even at 0% off. Allegedly great for children, but as a fan of both whimsy and point-and-click adventure games, I liked it. It is extremely short (about an hour long) and probably not for everyone. The good thing is that the first half of the game is available as a free demo on the official site. The bad thing is that it hasn't been on sale since the 2012 Summer Sale.
Some recommendations:
Darkest Dungeon - http://store.steampowered.com/app/262060/
Headed out of early access in early Feb., this might be the last time to get this unique strategic RPG before it jumps up in price for launch.
header.jpg
Grim Dawn - http://store.steampowered.com/app/219990
Similarly, Grim Dawn has just become feature complete and it's getting its final polish before release early next year. The game is a Diablo-style ARPG, from the developers of Titan Quest.
header_586x192.jpg
Hexcells - Complete Pack - http://store.steampowered.com/sub/50074/
Squarecells, the successor has just come out recently (I've 100%'ed it already... it's good stuff), but this is really where the action is. For $2.69 a no-brainer for puzzle fans. Alternatively, the Picross game Paint it Back is solid.
Ascension Deckbuilding Game - http://store.steampowered.com/app/320430/
A fun time-waster, this could replace solitaire for you. This is a port of the tabletop deck-building card game. It's really addictive and includes six expansions, making it a decent value proposition at $5.
Xenodrifter - http://store.steampowered.com/app/319140/
$1.49 for this clever metroidvania! Really great for the price, even if it's missing the 3d from the 3DS version.
Tembo the Badass Elephant - http://store.steampowered.com/app/341870/
$3.74 for a Sega-published platformer by GameFreak? Yes, please. The play mechanics seem awesome and the art style recalls classic platformers that we all love.
Lakeview Cabin Collection - http://store.steampowered.com/app/361990/
I haven't played this homage to 80s horror movies yet, but watching the trailer ensures me that I'm the target audience.
Why Am I Dead At Sea - http://store.steampowered.com/app/359400/
The Earthbound comparisons in the steam sale thread made this an easy purchase choice for me (and many others).
Puzzle Strike - http://store.steampowered.com/app/386740/
Videogame adaptation of the board game based on the video game (i.e. Puzzle Fighter). The board game version is well-balanced and has a nice competitive scene. This was just released, but I suspect there will be plenty of people to play online and lots of depth to the mechanics.
Great. Need some more indie games in my life right now! Any games out there similar to Cook, Serve, Delicious? My wife loves the game and has been asking me for more games like it. Will also take any games similar to Her Story as she liked that also.
Anyone looking for an oldschool 2D action game should have a look at Oniken. It's fantastic, especially at 49 cents.
The studio made Odallus afterwards, also great.
Short 2-3 sentence description why people should check it out. Preferably NO PR talk/steam page copypasta,
Not to be rude at the amount of effort that goes in, but do you really expect people to read through 15 pages of games? I think people would be much better served with 1 page of curated games that you think are worth picking up, rather than this infodump which is way too much to take in.
Not rude at all, I have the exact same thing in mind every time I make these threads. These threads started with a "smaller" curated section, and to a certain extent they still are. I am playing around... 200-300 Indie games per year in the Indie threads and there are a ton of games to recommend, even if it was only curated by me.
That was also part of the reason why I only made these threads once per year, but then I get asked by others who missed it, so I suppose people still like having it.
Also, the "infodump" is games that have been featured in previous threads. If you want to stick to a smaller list (~40) of recent "curated" games, its going to be in post 3 and 4 at the end of the sale.
Edit: Another thing that these threads help with is fighting the short memory that these sales advocate. Great gems still get featured here on sale, which otherwise tend to be forgotten and out of sight once a few months have passed. These threads are certainly not for everyone, but if people still like having it, I'll do them.
Not to be rude at the amount of effort that goes in, but do you really expect people to read through 15 pages of games? I think people would be much better served with 1 page of curated games that you think are worth picking up, rather than this infodump which is way too much to take in.
This thread basically replaces the Steam storefront for those seeking hard-to-find or easy-to-overlook games. The sort of thing reviews and word of mouth alone won't catch. It's incredibly useful for the Steam user that thinks they have everything.
And in spite of what you may think, there's always people asking where this thread (or an equivalent) is during sale events. Steam's become something of a beast, and it can be legitimately hard to find the stuff you want to see. It's something of a staple, at this point. GAF, as a community, is fortunate there's so many people wanting to share the little gems they've found, let alone people willing to corral and organise something to hold all of this excitement.
So, yeah, great work Toma. It's appreciated. Every time.
Toma
Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Nice work, bought a few I would never have seen from the actual store.
Curious, which ones?
(There are a few games on the list, that I just like seeing bought because nobody cares about them, despite them being fantastic. Full Bore, Cubesis, etc. just to name a few)
Also: I wont update the thread until tomorrow, as I really want some free time right now and it took me 5-6 hours to get this thread up. :p
