It isn't actually, Game Boy is the one true king. :)

Just for fun:

Neo Geo AES: 13 years

wiki :
Neo Geo hardware production lasted seven years, discontinued in 1997; and game software production lasted fourteen years, discontinued in 2004

Was hoping Exist Archive would do better... the long-awaited tri-Ace return to console and it only managed 19k on PS4 :( (and 21 on Vita)

Here's hoping SO5 works out for them...

SCEJA has listed the top 20 selling "indie" games on their platforms this year (January 1-December 6). What qualifies as indie to them? That's a mystery.
The closest I can assume is that it consists of digital only titles, alongside primarily digital releases with limited physical ones. Yomawari's a big exception I think.
Although I have to assume the numbers aren't so great. I can barely find any of these titles ranking in the Famitsu Digital Sales thread, so either they didn't chart or didn't get noticed:
34. [PSV] Fushigi no Gensoukyou: The Tower of Desire {2015.6.25} – 31.645
60. [PSV] DEEMO Last Recital {2015.6.24} – 15.898
168. [PSV] Yomawari <ADV> (Nippon Ichi Software) {2015.10.29} – 4.922

These ranked 1st, 2nd and 4th on Vita respectively.

GamesMaya Christmas Eve's report

Today is the last day of big sales (actually, for New Year's Eve it will start again).

Recently a lot of games ran out of stock due to the popularity.
For example, Disney Magic Castle 2 had a slow start and seemed safe but it's sold out, she recognises carelessness of her part.
Rhythm Heaven The Best+ is another game that is being purchased a lot everyday and it's too late for a shipment in time.

Especially today, for some reason, interest for Famista Returns increased by a lot.
Mario & Luigi RPG is stable increasing.
Sumikko Gurashi is especially popular among girls.
Yo-kai Watch Busters as expected is being requested by SantaClaus a lot.
Monster Strike steadily selling.

Minecraft Vita Edition is moving hardware, blue color for boys and orange for girls.

Fallout 4 is having a good word of mouth, moving hardware too.

And obviously Monster Hunter X isn't slowing down any time soon.

Tomorrow new stock for some Vita colors that were out of stock, and also new stock for PS4.

Splatoon WiiU Set is over.

3DS moving A LOT of software, nice. It's amazing how this platform is retaining the vast majority of sw sales after 5 year in the market.

Famista is doing really well, after the slow start. Sumikko Gurashi 2 banking. Happy for RT+, half a collection but half a new game so glad it's selling.

Any interest in 7th Dragon III on 3DS by folks currently? That hasn't been seen in a while. :(

What do folks think of the relative success of P&D and Monster Strike on 3DS? Think these type of mobile spinoffs on 3DS/NX will continue?

Well, not exactly. They're still officially licensed games and not homebrew like what Dreamcast has now.

I didn't discriminate on media, be it CD/disk add on, Nintendo Power station download or online digital download.

No, you're right of course. I was just thinking out loud about the comparison, because times have definitely changed since you no longer need the same level of retail presence to keep the software coming really. It's going to be interesting to watch how it extends the lifespans of systems.

That doesn't seem like the kind of game that would see a holiday increase at all.

Yes digital's really changed things for platform life expectancy by removing the inherent risk associated with physical inventories. I get the feeling 3DS, Vita and Wii U are all going to get releases for much longer than most expect thanks to that.

Gundam has sold almost 30% of its shipment during the first day.

Normally post Christmas legs for Sony console games are pretty good but awful word of mouth for this one will probably hurt it's legs. Maybe kids will still buy it though.

The Wii U with Splatoon and Mario Maker is a powerful combo, but in the absence of more new software they should really put together a marketing campaign pushing other games like Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad, and Wooly World to new adopters. It's kinda sad that in light of YoY improvements in hardware not even the holiday season could drag them into the light with at least a few thousand extra sales each. Such well crafted games deserve a second chance with a new audience, but Nintendo has to do some legwork to make people more aware of them.

A little bit worried about Exist Archive; I wonder what they expected. I think the game probably had a strict budget so I hope it did okay for their expectation.

I saw on esuteru, that during a Exist Archive stream the producer of the game had expressed concern about the game sales... something along the lines of it being hard to continue to make new IP if they won't sell. There is some fear there.

If anyone wants to translate here's the transcript:

It seems like the west has been very receptive of new IP in gaming the past few years, but in Japan very few have found success (and very few have tried). At least in terms of this demo (late teen-adult).

I question the abundance of these breakout successes in the West of new IP not on the shoulders of something pre-established with a new label.

But there's been plenty.

Watch Dogs, Destiny, Until Dawn, Undertale, Rocket League, Path of Exile, Titanfall, Project Cars...

I mean I could go on forever, especially if you include indies.

Edit:Just wanted to add the western bit was my commentary, not the producer.

The real final Game Boy game was Doraemon no Study Boy: Kanji Yomikaki Master on July 18, 2003. Obviously I wasn't separating add-ons or refreshes, otherwise PCE, NGP, WS, DS and others would've been much shorter.

Even if you wanted that though, Game Boy still lasted longest by about a month. Bow down to your true King. Maybe NeoGeo can be his Queen. :D

Scratch of Rocket League, its not a new IP. And I was looking more at games without hundreds of millions of marketing dollars behind them (and I'd question W_Ds staying power after the clusterfuck of its release and Ubisofts subsequent tumblings). I was looking more for small projects (Undertale is indie btw) like Ori and the Blind Forest, Life is Strange, Shovel Knight, Undertale, or Her Story, stuff like that. These games have been successful on their unique premises or excellent gameplay which is more akin to what a Tri-Ace product would have to pull (well they're bigger than most of the things I listed as a studio) as they're not going to start swinging around W_D or Destiny money.

And while we have seen the cream rise to the top in the west, I wouldn't call it an abundance nor would I forget all the other stuff that sank to the bottom irregardless of how good or bad it may have been. A crowded market calls for exceptional products, or exceptionally trendy products as luck would have it, if you don't have multi-million dollar marketing campaigns to ensnare a population to buy your snake oil.

But anyway this is besides the point as he didn't make mention of it as you now pointed out. So let's not bother the thread with discussions that do not pertain to said thread.

let's stop the quarell by adding Last Hope so the King is the King, a boy can't be a King :p

A pokemon 2DS bundle is coming
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1161953

This is the first we've seen of the 2DS in Japan isn't it?

Now that's something I wasn't expecting, at all. 2DS comes out in Japan, and that price is very low. Curious to see what it's going to do, especially if it can influence 3DS sales sufficiently enough even several weeks after the release (depending on the bundle's long-term availability, of course).

Talking about mere numbers: no one posted latest Famitsu's monthly retail + digital Top 30 yet, right?

[WIU] Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem (2/2)(Fortissimo Edition Wii U Set) <SLG> (Nintendo) (¥40.824)

Have a bad feeling that both Gundam and FE gonna bomb hard. This version of GVS doesn't look so hot.

I'ts interesting how Nintendo is launching 2DS in Japan - this might be a slight boost to sales in a typical quiet period (February).

Ehh, I definitely don't think it's true that not many developers have tried to develop new IPs for that demographic. Half the Vita lineup is made of those games.

Big John Games must be really happy with Cube Creator 3D and the fact that Minecraft probably isn't coming to 3DS.
