Psychonauts 2 Announced (Crowdfunding on Fig, PC/PS4/XB1, UE4, $3.3M goal--funded!)

I'm I over looking it, or is there no physical PS4 edition????

:/

Nope, there are no physical editions for consoles. This is the one thing preventing me from backing. I know I will want a physical edition on ps4 and don't want to double dip when one inevitably gets announced closer to the release date.

Hmm. This seems to have slowed down as of late. The holidays? At 93% we're so close yet so far. Would love to see a beloved sequel to a cult game like this get funded! Hopefully it's just a week or so before we reach that magical 100% marker. Hope this makes it.

These things spike a lot during the last mouth. There is literally have nothing to fear. I'd be more worried about people flaking when the charges get charged. I don't know anything about that part though.

Nah, the last couple of days it has actually gained some momentum. It slowed down on the 26th and 27th, but has since regained that.

Well that is just dumb. I'm in the same boat then. No physical release; no sale. Would love to help them though. Shenmue 3 got my money on Day 1.

As someone who's been part of quite a few Kickstarters, this without a doubt will make it. About 90% of the way to its goal with 12 days left? Pft, easy.

There will be a surge of backers in the last week, and last two days especially.

Happy New Year everyone!

Tearaway with Tim, Lee Petty, and Tearaway's lead designer Rex Crowle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SSdathjGKA

I think this might be my favorite Devs Play yet. It's cool to see them dig into all the hard work and subtleties of this wonderful game that no one played.

Just started watching this and already I am really enjoying it :D! Love seeing more coverage on a fantastic game and hopeful that it spreads the world on Tearaway :).

After the recent surge of negative attention Tearaway has been getting here, this is a really nice counterpoint. Thanks for posting.

I am not spending that much for a none physical version.

I'd love a sequel, I'll buy the sequel.

But if they want my backing they either make a cheaper digital pledge of just the game and that's it, or they count me out.

Not spending 40 for digital only lol...

edit :

LOL 60 for digital only on console. Good luck with that Double Fine.

This is a case of trying to fund the game, not get it distributed to as many players as possible. It's okay if you want to frugal but Double Fine is doing nothing wrong here.

Psychonauts is currently $0.99 cents on Steam if anyone is interested or wants to gift a friend~

Thanks for the heads up!

they do, but on kickstarter, let hope it's the same on figs

This better get funded -_-...

it'll definitely be funded. a lot of people at work are doing the same thing I am and plan to back it in the last week. I always do that.

(nope, no good reason for it beyond telling myself i helped make it kinda-happen- did the same with broken age)

I've been conflicted. My heart wants to invest, but I just don't think the figures support it.

My biggest issue is that the suggested $21 average sale is no way indicative of the original inflated sales figures.

The 1.2m digital sold probably sold around $1. That's 1.2m in sales.
Let's say the 480k units initially sold at an average of $40. That's 19.2m in sales.
So 20.4m in total sales/1.7m units = $12 average sale
That pushes the breakeven point to 1.2m units.
If it sells 1.7m units like the original, I stand to make $80 per $500 by the year 2028.

Even then, an average initial sale of $40 might be generous.
If $30: $9 ave. sale, 1.6m breakeven. (almost equal with the original figures)
If $20: $6 ave. sale, 2.2m breakeven (above Psychonauts sales but below Brutal Legend)

Those calculations, which seem far more realistic to me, drastically cut projected profits.

Plus, there are a lot more losses that this simple math doesn't account for, like the loss of 20k sales at max price due to backer rewards, and the portion of digital sales that were either people double dipping due to the rise of Steam and digital marketplaces or people buying humble bundles for reasons other than Psychonauts.

Sure there are gains to be made from these figures, like prospective buyers who became fans from digital sales, or people who may have rented the first but would buy the sequel. But I think the negatives far outweigh the positives.

Plus, as much as I love Tim and Double Fine, they weren't very good with managing the Broken Age money. Investing seemed like a dream a few years ago when crowdfunding was new, but the mismanagement or utter failure of many projects really killed that dream.

Regardless, I'm curious to see how investors do.

I've been waiting on supporting it until the last week if it needed it because I'd play it in consoles (ps4), and the system they have of making you pay $18 for the console version makes it seem like the you'd end up losing money as compared to when the game actually came out and you just bought it.

But seems like I'll be supporting it if within this last week it still is under.

This is taking longer to fund than I figured after how it started. Guess people are more weary of backing a DF project now. Why aren't there any stretch goals though?

p.s. I wonder who has paid for the Whispering Rock trip. That's a lotta dough. Jack Black might potentially be in there lol.

This is common for kickstarter titles, and it happened to be that they put it in december where people are already spending a lot of money.

Last week, last few days especially, game should reach its goal. I mean they were asking for 3 mill plus from the get-go, and it doesn't have the massive nostalgia that games like Shenmue did.

I would have thought this would have soared past its goal by now, but ah well. I reckon it'll reach the goal though

I think the campaign has definitely been hurt by very overpriced console versions. Shenmue had 30 dollar digital console versions, and 60 dollar boxed console copies. The PS4 version massively outsold the PC versions, which were offered at the same prices. This was a good pricing structure for a project like this.

A lot of people are making the (justifiable) calculation that they can easily pick up a finished copy of the console game for much less than the Fig campaign offers.

Sure, but still, it got to two mill rather quickly, then it kinda trailed off. I'm not convinced it will have the usual massive spike at the end.

Yeah that seems like a bullshit raw deal.

The Fig total still doesn't include PayPal backers such as myself yet, does it? If not, I'm sure it's already surpassed the 3.3m goal and we can expect it to be funded no matter what happens at this point.

Don't believe it does. Either way though it's pretty much a lock to get funded.

What?

Double Fine's most successful crowd funding campaign ever got them $3.3 million. Massive Chalice topped out around $1.2 million.

The Psychonauts 2 campaign will likely surpass Broken Age as their most successful campaign ever. How does this indicate that people are "weary"?

I paid $51 for console + Steam early bird, planning on selling the Steam.

This is a project that I am supporting out of principle.

The game doesn't sound like it'll be a full priced game release ($60) but maybe 40 or 50. It'd be silly to sell it for more than 40 imho, it's already a relatively niche game don't raise the price too much and dissuade sales.

But yeah, if i support it it'll be on principle and to sell the Steam version.

I guess you're right. It just seemed like it slowed down more than normal. I'm a DFA backer btw, you didn't need to remind me how much they got. :p

Christ literally 100K or so to go. So close! This is virtually guaranteed to make it however so I'm not too concerned. It'll be such a relief however when this finally makes it.

Not backing either if there is no physical PS4 edition. If games like Retro City Rampage can be released physically, there is no excuse not to offer physical copies.

I am happy this is going to get funded, but the amount of people I see on Twitter and ect wanting it to fail out of spite disgusts me. Like its cool if you don't like DF or DF games it's all subjective; but holy shit no one should be THAT much of a dick.

This was very cool. Thanks for sharing the link. Just finished Tearaway so it was perfect timing to see this.

Looking forward to this getting funded and more Psychonauts. Crossing my fingers that this all turns out well.
