Germany: Merkel disgust at New Year gang assaults

Status
Not open for further replies.
Women have made at least 90 criminal complaints to police about the harassment by gangs at Cologne's main railway station on Thursday night.
Germans have been shocked by the scale of the attacks, involving many groups of drunk and aggressive young men.
Witnesses and police said the men were of Arab or North African appearance.
Mrs Merkel called Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker on Tuesday and expressed her "outrage over these disgusting attacks and sexual assaults".
The chancellor said everything must be done "to find the perpetrators as quickly and comprehensively as possible and punish them, regardless of their origin or background".

Damn, things are going to escalate quickly in Germany if this type of thing keeps up. Right or wrong, the migrants will get the blame.

Apparently there is more foolishness: Mayor of Cologne urges code of conduct for young women to prevent future assaults

Oh wow 90 complaints (at least). Didn't realize it was that many. Hopefully people don't turn against the unrelated migrant effort.

One father said a group surrounded him his underage 15 year old daughter, putting their hands on her breasts, between her legs. Just disgusting. Others saying they stole their purses, phones, tried to force them into private cabs, etc.

Is Merkel seriously placing the blame on the people who were assaulted? Really!?

Thats not Merkel. That's the Mayor of Cologne. Who has apparently never been to their own cities festivities given the victim blaming and rediculous "arms length" code of conduct.

What if you have no "group" to be with? What if you call for help and nobody does because that's what humans usually do and most likely actually happened too?

Fuck you mayor.

Yeah, he really is. That's some AAA-class victim blaming right there. Disgraceful.

I think she realises there's a group of people who think they can do what they please when it comes to women and there's not a lot they can do about it at the moment with the amount of migrants.

Blame the victims you're an asshole, blame the migrants you're a racist/inciting hate.

Ah, I misread it than (it's still early :') l I thought she went from saying its terrible and than went talking about the code.

However this isn't any better. How can someone blame the people who are assaulted? This is all kinds of wrong :(

Nah, they don't think they can do as they please. They actually CAN do as they please. NYE was a testament to that, considering the amount of people who got arrested compared to the number of filed rape-charges.

If only.

“We need to prevent confusion about what constitutes happy behaviour and what is utterly separate from openness, especially in sexual behaviour," she said.

As if people doing this sort of stuff think victims aren't scarred by it. They know, they do it because they think there'll be or are used to there being no consequences.

On a note: the mayor is the woman that got stabbed by an right wing extremist a few months back, shortly before the election, because she was speaking in favour of refugees. She then won with 52% while in hospital.

Don't forget the cops where right there, unable to think of a solution. They threw the book against as many people as they could, filled up all the jail cells as quickly as possible until they were all full, but still stood by as the 17 year old girls got 'fingers forced in all of their orifices'.

It is time for some quick training how to handle a mob assault, and inform the police that you can take your time to arrest people who are chained to a hospital bed.

I agree about the first part
and about the second part, how about you just blame the perpetrators no matter where they come from?

I am blaming them, it just sucks that of the supposed 20,000 migrants they have, roughly 5% of them are pure scum. Doesn't bode well for the 1.5 million they want to take, so the other 95% of them better step up or Germany and the rest of Europe better start getting a shit load more police and prisons/jails.

Very disturbing. I hope these men are identified and made to atone for their disgusting actions. What the hell led them to do this? I don't think there is an infectious disease that causes perversion. Well except ideological madness combined with social-economic dissatisfaction.

just quoting that telegraph.uk article

Syria, Albania and Kosovo were the top three countries of origin for asylum-seekers in Germany last year.

Two of the three three countries are safe countries and the people will be denied asylum. The same with the people from North Africa.

The real number we are talking about is so much smaller that pulling out numbers like 1,5 million (which was even busted several months anyway) or the 1 million is just plain made up shit.

This is what has come to? Women forced to change the way they behave in public because of the lack of empathy, common decency and moral fiber in some men?

I vaguely remember (from the 1.5mil German migrants thread) similar advice being issued to young women and girls living in the vicinity of refugee camps in Germany. Dress decently, don't go out alone etc.

Edit: this kinda stuff

At least that wasn't from an actual elected official, but the school. This new "advice" comes after actual assaults, which makes it even more disgusting.

Apparently we now have to change our behavior for a small group because they can't handle a normal society and think it is a free for all to do as they wish. If this is such a small group and the people were known to police for earlier crimes and assaults like suggested in the news, why are they free to roam the streets and nothing is done about this?

So women are basically are advised to not use the freedoms they have just because some scummy assholes in the camps are more likely to abuse them?

with the 5% i think you refer to the 1000 people, but that is a misinterpreted number.
not 1000 People assaulted women
50-60 People out of celebrating 1000 People assaulted women.

apart from that, we do not know yet if they were refugees or if they simply hid between them.

Disgusting behaviour.

These people need to be made examples of. If the official response is to "forget those freedoms you took for granted for decades" because they're cagey about blaming the perpetrators then things will only worsen as criminals go unpunished and the native population feels they aren't protected.

These kind of attacks feed directly into the "foreigners are coming to rape and attack your women" narrative that sees people resort to vigilante violence and the far right.

You know, I'd imagine if I was father to a teenage daughter I'd take any behavioral advise to keep her from becoming a victim of a crime thankfully. It's the same when police advises people to properly secure their property. Of course ethically that's questionable.

Either way the mayor's words are beyond inappropriate.

Every major newspaper is putting out the 1 million number including even the financial times so I'm not sure why you think it's made up.

I'm seriously considering signing my little girl up for shit like Krav Maga as soon as she's old enough, just to give her a fighting chance against animals like this.

What if the perpetrators have an uneducated background, and religion that has a history of being aggressive towards females?

And out of the 1000 no one thought there was anything wrong with assaulting and robbing German women. Or are giving testimony to the police who are already making statements it's unlikely many perpetrators will be convicted given the difficulty of distinguishing the perpetrators from the bystanders. Better 100 guilty ones free then 1 innocent convicted and all that.

Now, check what the 1 million number is about. And no that's not the number of people who will stay in Germany.
So what is the actual number Germany is working with at the moment? They sure aren't doing a good job at communicating the actual strategy to dealing with the refugee crisis and the numbers involved.

Really? In a crowd that large, noisy and most likely drunk, any one person would have a hard time time knowing what's going on even a few feet away. It's not about the remaining 950 condoning it, it's about them not even knowing it's happening. It's the same reason pickpockets typically operate in crowded streets and train stations; the distraction makes it easier for them to get away with it. Are you suggesting the police arrest and charge the entire crowd for the crime of being in physical proximity or something?

Recent data were just released.

1,1 million refugees, 500k applications for asylum.

500k seems like a more reasonable number, although still high of course (sadly a lot of people are running from war, so that is to be expected).

If at least 600k people are from safe countries, I hope those are sent back quickly so the helping efforts can focus on people who actually need it. That way systems don't get overloaded and the organisations in charge have a better grip on it.

Politicians should really communicate these things more clearly whenever it is brought up. People are worried and the situations and strategies to deal with problems are not there or not explained.

Can't believe a woman (the mayor) would issue such a code of conduct, wth.

So women are basically are advised to not use the freedoms they have just because some scummy assholes in the camps are more likely to abuse them?

Guys, guys. I just had a GREAT idea. What if... stay with me!... what if we dress up all the women in long clothes? Yeah? Yeah! You feeling it!? That would solve EVERYTHING. These clothes should include some sort of... I don't know... head cover? Like a ski mask. Everyone likes skiing, right? Women will LOVE it, they always complain about being cold. Well, not anymore!

Regarding the crimes, I have not much optimism that most of them will be solved. It will be very hard to identify the perpetrators beyond doubt. The "good" thing is that the main motivation behind these assaults was theft as these crimes are easy to solve if they find a stolen phone etc. on the suspect.
BTW can someone tell/link me what happens if a refugee is proven guilty? Is the asylum process immediately canceled and they are send back to their country after their sentence? Is there are difference between economic and war refugees? Can't imagine they would send someone back to a warzone.

Two of the three three countries are safe countries and the people will be denied asylum. The same with the people from North Africa.

The problem is that those refugees will still stay for a long-ass time in Germany. The process is just too slow and they take up all the resources from war refugees. Also, I would guess it does not exactly favor good behavior once these people realize they will be send back no matter what (many come here with the illusions of wealth in Europe and don't know that they are very likely to be denied asylum).

So what is the actual number Germany is working with at the moment? They sure aren't doing a good job at communicating the actual strategy to dealing with the refugee crisis and the numbers involved.

It's difficult to say, as the EU rules still state refugees have to apply for asylum in the first EU country they get to, which obviously isn't Germany. And there's many contradictory statements form government officials. When the big wave started in september some said the rules were suspended for Syrians, two months later a minister said they reinstated those rules for everyone, others said that wasn't the case.
Countries like Greece or Hungary of course can't and won't take this many refugees back, and everybody wants to stay in Germany

Essentially its's a big mess and no one really knows what's happening or has a plan

Many will be sent back to their home countries, if they are declared safe. Especially most coming from Balkan countries.

A huge part also won't get asylum, but only "Duldung", which means their stay will be tolerated, but they aren't allowed to work, getting further education is difficult etc., so they are staying in a kind of limbo that helps nobody. After years in Germany they might get the official right of residence

To add to this, here's the refugee statistics for Germany between January and October last year:

http://www.asylumineurope.org/reports/country/germany/statistics

During that period 360 000 applications were filed and roughly half rejected. Breaking it down further, virtually all 57 000 applications from Syria were approved while virtually all 65 000 applications from the Balkans were rejected. In addition, virtually all 15 000 applications from Eritrea and Iraq were approved while applications from Afghanistan were split, with 1400 approved and 600 rejected.

It's not like someone was groping them secretly, pinching their butts, the girls were forced through human tunnels where everyone got a feel. There were groups of men assaulting girls. You can't in all honesty say that his kind of thing happens away from the public eye.

Thats not entirely true. You can get work with a dulding status and eventually get a working visa if fertain conditions are met.
