Why do you think the home console will have a screen at all?

In my opinion the handheld will probably have gamepad functionality and it will be a nice bonus for those who own both, but the home console won't have a screen on the controller.

This is what I'm guessing, too. Home variant will come with something Wii U Pro Controller-esque to match industry standards and expectations (with maybe minor changes like touch pads and scroll wheels), and the portable variant will be the GamePad accesory (if they even allow it). I think innovation and experimentation is most likely to come from the handheld (since it needs to differentiate itself from mobile and has no other competition) and the relationship between the portable and home variants. I could see the handheld being traditional, too, however.

That could actually be a great incentive to get people to buy both NX form factors. Then again, Sony tried to do the same thing with the Vita.
I don't think vita has low latency streaming from ps4, and I don't know if any games actually use it as a second screen.

I'm guessing there will be some crazy feature none of us even guessed yet. Nothing we heard about the nx so far sounds like a brand new concept.

Not trying to sound rude, but as a veteran poster in the old WUSTs, whenever I think back to those insane days and IdeaMan, all I can remember is tiresome and endless pages of teasing and winking from him in between occasional bursts of real info from others like John Harker confirming clickable sticks and lherre correctly scoffing at those who thought there would be 2-3 GB of memory, just to name a few examples. Whether or not IdeaMan had info that might have been correct at some point, I don't recall him ever confirming anything major that actually ended up in the verified, final build of the system.

But wiiu does have 2 GB of memory...

I don't, but some people seem to think for a variety of reasons that they will keep it. It seems to me that the Sharp Freeform rumor is legit, though, and I see them wanting to keep a common control scheme between hardwares.

Yes? What I was referring to was people hoping and speculating back then that it would have 2-3 GB of system memory available for game development. Member lherre who is a real insider on the forum eventually replied to that with a post where he said "2-3 GB, what?" That turned out to be correct obviously because the memory ended up being split between the OS with game side only getting about 1 GB.

I'm not sure about the economics of it but using the exact same components as the handheld could be relatively cheap.

Also losing touch without gaining anything means it's a step back from the Gamepad.
But that seems to be what a lot of people want.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.

Thinking about it, it seems that Nintendo would still want players to be able to use miiverse and so a touch screen component seems almost inevitable. Imagine if NX Splatoon players couldn't make images like this, for example.

I really hope the free form patents have either been scaled back for the final plans or just abandoned all together. Free form displays would be an expensive repeat of the Gamepad and gimmicky. The initial "Huh, that's interesting..." reaction would probably wear off really quickly with most consumers, plus spending dev resources for HD console/dedicated portable visuals which would be at least partly obscured by the player's hands would be a waste and is not appealing at all.

The could put a touch pad on the controller. They could also have it so that you could use your phone or computer as a terminal and do your drawings on different devices. Or the handheld. I don't think the artistic side of Miiverse is going to be a deciding factor for NX. Not to downplay it. I wish I had that type of talent.

Sure they could but I'd over DS4 touched/Vita back touch, smartness and Vita-connectivity as evidence that those would be pretty naff and definitely underutilised.

IdeaMan

My source is my ass!
If I recall correctly, Ideaman's source witnessed a PS360-level game being run on the tv screen with a completely separate POV being rendered on the Gamepad. This led to the (logical perhaps) conclusion that Wii U would be a good 2x as powerful as the "HD Twins." He was pretty straight forward about this when asked later on.

thanks :)

I read some of the previous posts again for better context. Maybe what we're thinking about third parties is wrong. Is that it, IdeaMan?

So are you saying that we shouldn't expect much from a third party perspective? Is that just for the West or worldwide (Japanese & indies included)?

Indies is nonsense. Some of the biggest success stories have come from the WiiU/3DS. There's being skeptical of support, and then there's being unrealistic.

I think it sounds like he's thinking we're really looking at the situation wrong from 3rd parties. Which makes me think perhaps we're looking at the WRONG kind of 3rd parties? Perhaps more smaller studios will be featured/mobile?

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

I'd say forecasting bad Japanese support is a bit nosense as well, at least assuming it's the family we're talking about.

IdeaMan, it would be better to clarify a bit more. As much as possible, of course, given NDAs and stuff like that :p

Either that or perhaps he has seen some internal schedules for 3rd parties and sees that schedule in the title is not matching with their internal schedules? Could be earlier or later perhaps?

That's what I was trying to make sure of. I am of the thought that Nintendo's third party support will likely come from the Japanese & indies. But again, I was trying to be sure of that.

John Harker has been quite open about 2016 as release date. Both by saying "tighter schedule"

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=188370581&postcount=140

and with this post

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=188903228&postcount=186

I'd be very surprised if there's a "later" schedule. Unless the home form factors is coming out in 2017 (Early 2017 at latest, I'd say), and that's when Western third party titles will be more on board, while Japanese third party games will get the spotlight for the "first" launch (the handheld) this year.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Come on, guys. Not like this again.

Would that really be it when the last 5 pages or so have been more or less full of negativity about third party support?

Well that looks to me like two 1's, so clearly that means X1, duct-taped to a 0 or a ring. Well obviously that must mean two X1s duct taped to a Red Ring.

I'm not sure what sort of console that is, but I admit my being curious.

lol = 101 = 5 in binary

5 Wii U's Ductaped.
Half-Life 5 confirmed
Left 5 Dead 5
5 is the mark of the Nintendo Beast - Pentagram
5th-Party Support

Everything is aligning.

something wrong from a third-party perspective

and hello everyone :) i missed you!

So (western) third parties are practically not considered into the schedule? No devkits yet or not enough time to be ready for Oct-Nov, maybe?

This would fit the earlier discussion.

Just want to point out that he could be saying a June announcement would not match a third party publisher's schedule. They have to do their hype cycle too at some point.

I've speculated before that Nintendo would announce before the end of the fiscal year to allow third parties to announce/schedule their release slates for investors.

So, we could be watching an announcement between February and April?

I suppose that's a possibility too.

Its either going to be a service, cartridge based console, or an all in one handheld with dock that lets you play the game on a TV and remove it to take it on the go, in my opinion.

Western publishers don't seem to have an issue with announcing games without the Nintendo HW ports, even when those exists.
