PSVR PSX 2015 gameovergreggy shoutcast RIGS Mech Combat League

To those of you that tried it out was it weird moving around in the mech. Did you get nauseous or anything? I assume you move around with the left analog stick? I'm wondering how they manage to avoid people feeling uncomfortable given that I've heard moving around in VR without teleportation is difficult

Hey! I was there when the filmed this . . . man, they backed up the line for it like crazy!

I didn't like the game as much as I liked other VR experiences so far. But I only got one game in.

Movement is very smooth, you actually aim with your head. No discomfort whatsoever.
Being in the cockpit with this kind of movement feels right.

Huh, I thought reprojection was only being used on certain experiences like the robot playground demo. Source?
You're welcome to look up the info on Morpheus / PSVR. It's common knowledge at this point that it runs at 120hz as a standard and only 90fps experiences will remain there, with certain games being native 120fps, and more graphically intensive experiences needing to only hit constant 60fps because the special form of interpolation occurs that moves pixels in the direction of your head movement, aka reprojection. In fact at one point Shuehei mentioned the reprojection might always be on to ensure smooth VR experience in case of dropped frames.

Was that part really necessary? I've been following most vr stuff since the dk1 ks days, can't be arsed to know erythang bout every hmd, hence my eagerness to have things clarified when I don't know something. Then again my focus has been more on the pc space, but thanks for the breakdown anyhow :)

If nothing else I feel like PSVRs biggest advantage will be the quantity and quality of games put out for it. This, Dreams, No Man's Sky, GT Sport, would be an insane first year.

Actually, games that run at 60 get reprojected to 120. But games that are at 90 stay at 90, they don't go up to 120.

This isn't true. Everything is reprojected even 120Hz content

Fanelli discussed the bar it was setting in an interview that will be published later this week. “For the VR version, it was like ‘okay, the game is– it’s not technically demanding, what we can do on Morpheus’,” he said. “We were like ‘okay, let’s push it to the upper limit and framerate, so let’s push for 120′. We had to turn a couple of things down because we were not hitting it perfectly in the beginning. But the other cool thing is that we are running native, so 120 natively, and then we added reprojection stuff on top of it because reprojection gives you even lower latency because it predicts where you are moving your head so you can get an even better slice of fluidity and the game is more smooth with it on.

edit: I'm mistaken
90hz games do stay at 90 however you can apply reprojection on top of it

No need to take offense. You asked me for a source. I'm in the middle of working on a video project so I said you're welcome to look it up :)

It's kinda crazy how ingrained Miller is into playstation. He's probably the biggest spokesperson for playstation, bigger than Shu even.

With that logic you could've saved more time without the snark ;-)

Point being, the "common knowledge" remark isn't a helpful attitude to have for those just wanting to be educated. This is already a niche subject as I'm sure you're well aware.

Nicko and Xeno! My PSX buddies!

Nicko actually gave me his second RIGs appointment in the day because I had to leave early on Sunday (my airline moved my flight forward by 4 hours so I couldn't go to the event at all on Sunday).

I got to try both RIGS and Eve Valkyrie, and while I loved them both, I'll just stick to RIGS for this thread.

This game was such a total blast. Getting into the game so quickly, being able to adapt to the controls and have everything feel so natural, so tuned to the format so instinctively, was incredible. The gunplay was solid, unique weapons and you had to stay on your toes.

Graphics were not as stunning as some of the games I'm used to on my PS4 now, but I wasn't even paying attention to that, I was so absorbed in the moment to moment aspect of Being in a goddamn mech, running and gunning, taking out other players and trying to score.

Was MVP for the game, most goals, second most kills. Go Cobras! Fucking incredible experience. No nausea, no discomfort. Everything felt good. Headset feels super comfortable, no light leaking around it, or anything like that.

This and Eve pretty much sold me on getting this thing at launch.

Didn't mean it as snark either. Not sure why you are offended by my suggestion that you look up technical information. Sorry? I might have just assumed that with the avatar you have, you knew about the 120hz thing from when it was first announced a year ago. My bad.

My misunderstanding then. Avatar notwithstanding I'm still just an enthusiast, not a dev that needs to keep up with all the deets on each hmd for projects/professional purposes. Admittedly I've paid less attention to psvr's messaging due to interest in the rift and vive, but still plan on picking one up at some point. Anywho thanks for taking the time to explain it!

Hi Abdiel!

Stop it. You're making me want VR.

I was also MVP in my game and in Cobra team. Unfortunately my teammates didn't fare as well against the opponents and we just barely lost. My buddy Johnny was also on the other team and while he felt slightly nautious afterward, I was perfectly fine and wanted more. Alas, the booth was shutting down at that point.

Really loved how smooth and visceral it felt. Sorry for my use of that word, lol, but it is truly how i felt about it. Scale made sense, and even though i didnr have a custom loadout the dual weapons firing at wherever you looked felt ace. Apparently they also disabled the ejection sequence and stage entrance due to some issues or something.

Reproduction can always be on because it does two things.

1. Reduces motion to photon latency
2. Can be used to increase framerate

That said its got some noticeable issues and it might be better in certain cases to not have it on. I doubt we'll see many games running at 120fps, tech demos yeh but full blown games nah. I bet it'll be mostly 90fps, mostly without reprojection, and then some 60->120 reprojection

Goddamnit, I just realized one day, someone might make my dream of piloting an Evangelion a reality. Holy shit.

DUDE! Give me this, Gundam and Armored Core and I can die a happy man. (Not to mention we're getting some Ace Combat goodness <3).

I own a DK2 since day one and I've tried plenty of VR stuff, and I still have a hard time believing I won't quickly get nauseous with something like this.

I hope VR give us a lot more mech games, I'd love to have Armored Core VR, or Gundam.VR, I wonder if EXVS style control scheme can work in cockpit view.

This is my opinion on RIGS. The VR aspect of the experience aside, this game just looks uninteresting. It's basically just a simple mech shooter where you can jump threw hoops to score..

Probably any game could seem awesome when it's your first VR experience.

Whereas rocket league is based on the works of Shakespeare ;). It's hard to know whether the game is actually any good, but the concept seems fine to me.

It's most likely de-warped as well.
Anyway, as resolution is quite low for such a wide FoV AA will be very important, will be interesting to see what methods developers will use. (Really hope for analytic methods etc.)

That's right, VR has certain requirements, rocksteady high framerate is one, and good AA is another else the shimmer becomes too distracting and "pulls you out".

Looks cool, the online connection should be solid as a rock to not suffer lags and other barf inducing glitches, right?
Don't know if that game is compatible to my shitty connection ;(

I'm presuming they will ensure their code/netcode prioritises your local framerate.

I believe the breakout box helps with 3D audio and reprojection.

there was a thread about DC VR on GAF if you search.

Definitiely: 3D audio , 2nd screen unless code provides its own (asymetric), sensor processing

Sony presentations from lat year had all the hmd re-projection being done on the gpu; but since then some devs (Sony saiud something too) about box doing more heavy lifting, and the box has active cooling and is own power. However the normal graphics pipeline must all be done on the PS4.

Be interesting to see if anything else comes out on this.

I went to the event interested, but not really intending to get it. But after I was like, Damn, I'm going to need this, aren't I.

That would be such a sweet spot. Not sure if they can get it that low, but that would be awesome.

Well that pretty much sold me on it.

It was really fantastic. Eve valkyrie was amazing too, if you've ever wanted to dogfight someone and actually be tracking them with your head through your cockpit as you throw your fighter into maneuvers... And not only that, the head tracking was how you locked on your missiles in eve, too. God. I waited two hours to play EVE, and it was so good. 4v4 dogfight in space.

They had a huge dedicated booth for it at psx. The line wrapped all the way around it. 4v4, 8 minutes to a round. I believe there was 3 or 4 different fighter types. Incredible. Weaving and dodging through space debris and locking missiles with the head tracking while lining up the guns...

Man... It was exhilarating. I was the top player in that too, the handler who helped me get the headset on was like "That was your first time using vr?"

I was blown away. Just... Gah. I wanted a campaign. To have a story. I'm excited for ace combat now too because of psvr.

Wow, lots of shimmering in the footage... looks really really low res.

yea that's how the game will probably look. I tried out Summer Lesson and it was similar... not crisp image like the trailers.

Are we seeing the TV feed in this video though? The TV feed likely needs to match the resolution to the eyes... or, it is much less to save on processing.

Can anyone speak to this?

Whoa hold on they had 4v4 in Valkyrie at PSX? Awesome. Shit I'm so excited, that game looks so sick!

Sounds exciting, Hope sony do a mech warrior type VR campaign and maybe even a survival mode with friends online...Seems so much potential.

I would have gone back for another round if it hadn't been such a long wait. That and rigs were my total highlights

I was really surprised that there was no real discussion about that booth! It was huge and the line was there the whole day Saturday. I think most of the gaffers just avoided it because of that line, but I waited. So worth it. Amazing.

Yeah man. I hope rigs has done serious stuff behind it. But Cambridge made kz mercenaries, which was a great game. It's cool to see them tackle this project. It was awesome.

Can you can imagine square making a front mission game in vr?

The PS4 version was at GDC 2014 as well. It's been said to be a launch title.

Excited for RIGS, what are the chances of this being a launch game alongside Eve?

I reckon a launch line-up of RIGS, Eve, Rez, Battlezone and whatever they pack in with the headset (Playroom VR, London Heist?) will be sufficient for me for a while. That's starting to sound like an expensive wish-list...

How are the menus for the games in VR? I hope it's like the movie Minority Report!

I think they've been pretty tight-lipped about the PSVR UI. I'm sure I heard somewhere that there would be a custom UI, rather than just a 3d version of the standard menu, but I don't think anyone outside of an NDA has seen it yet.
