Maybe this has been discussed to death already, apologies if it has. But what is everyone expecting Konami to do with the franchise? The Lords of Shadow route is a dead end and the last 2D (iga)vania is 7-8 years ago. If they'd do a (cheap) 2d 'vania again, I guess the most likely route is mobile or digital download only. I wonder if they'll dust it of at all or are sorta accepting other teams are basically moving on with the genre, leaving them behind.

At this point, probably nothing. We might see some quick attempts at a mobile cash in or if we're lucky, a "Castlevania Collection" with a bunch of the games in it for 3DS or something. I don't expect anything else from the franchise until Konami is dissolved or they sell it off or something like that.

Heh, that's pretty funky. Thanks for sharing.

With the Konami meltdown, I actually think, as a Castlevania fan, times aren't so bad. Iga is pretty much making NotCastlevania and there's indies by the boatloads doing their Metroidvania thing. There's Hollow Knight, Slain, Heart Forth, Alice, Aegis Defenders, Time Spinner, Chasm... And I'm probably forgetting a lot of others. Can't say the same for a lot of other Konami franchises :|

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Sometimes I wish Konami would release a Mega Man Legacy like collection for Castlevania I-III but alas, it's Konami.

I'm going to be livestreaming (Around 8pm PST) a full play-through attempt of the OG Castlevania for funsies the tonight if any fellow Castlevania Gaffers want to tune in and watch me die repeatedly lol

To bump an old post as a follow up for last weeks CASTLEVANIA stream, I'll be doing Simon's Quest tonight @ 6pm PST (again if any fellow gaffers are interested in talking about cv and watching me die! (probably less, hopefully?) Here is the place.

BRANDO PLEASE HALP

Wtf is up with the character portraits during dialogue in Portrait of Ruin? Definitely the worst artwork I've seen in a video game in a long time.

yeah they're kinda cheap lol

for one reason or another it didn't bug me as much as in DoS. i guess it's mostly the lighter tone of PoR as opposed to it contrasting with the melodrama of DoS.

either way you're not really looking at them much so eh

So Rondo of Blood, Castlevania X68000 and the Genesis Castlevania games were all in development in the same time period-
I understand that the Dracula X development was going on at the same time as two other Akumajou games for different consoles?

Nyajiou: Yes, at Konami there was the X68000 game (released 7/93), the Megadrive game (Vampire Killer, scheduled for release in 1994), and the PC Engine game development all going on at the same time. It didn’t really feel like we were competing. At least, I think that’s the case… (laughs)

That's at least 3, 3 Castlevania games in the span of 2 years.

At least we don't have to worry about them using a cheap-Saturday-morning-anime art style again.

At least we don't have to worry about them making Castlevania games again

—As for the familiars, I noticed there’s a normal Fairy and a “half” Fairy, but their levels and experience are different.

Igarashi: There’s the fairy, the half-fairy, the devil, and the nose devil. We made their stats match their characters.

Yamane: Did you hear all the nose devil’s lines yet?

So the nose devil, which I assume is the Tengu was voiced by a known seiyuu, anyone got a video clip showing that?

Alright guys! The finale of my Castlevania streams starts TONIGHT! This time Castlevania 3! I'm legit terrified.... Again if anyone is interested in tuning and
(HELPING ME)
as well as watch me die perennially as always tune in here @ 8pm!

So for Portrait of Ruin, is it mostly use Charlotte for bosses and Jonathan for everything else? I'm in the first 3 hours still but her Gale Force magic which homes in makes the boss fights super easy

Or just use Charlotte
for everything
.

lol I never really used her at all so I don't know if her spells are all that. I just use Jonathan since I usually take a while to max out all his subweapons and forget about Charlotte.

I just got the bad ending, using Charlotte with Thunderbolt spell. It's so cheap. I'm going to try using her for normal map traversal as well

Using the spell on that boss to get keep going with the story was pretty rough though, I definitely had to try over and over at least 10x

update (to avoid double post):

I beat the game last night with the good ending. Definitely the worst of the IGAvanias but I have OoE to play still. Was the budget lower for Portrait of Ruin? The castle and paintings were so bland. At least there were a good amount of boss fights, Medusa was great. Richter was fun too, I struggled a bit and looked up the strategy, lol cream pies.

I just started playing SOTN.

It's my first ever Castlevania game and I'm really liking it so far. Music in particular has been amazing.

I have what's probably a total newb question. Why does Alucard keep staggering when I'm in the middle of attacking? It leaves me wide open. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a piece of equipment I need to find? I'm using a sword by the way. (I think it was called red rust) Still super early in the game. 5 percent complete, if that matters.

Staggering? Like cooldown after his attacks?

I wish I could go back to when I first played SOTN. Those late nights traversing through the very atmospheric castle with some of the most memorable music in gaming has always been one of my favorite gaming memories.

Red Rust has the ability to stagger you from time to time since it is a garbage weapon. Not sure why they gave it that ability though.

Red Rust is such a strange joke of a weapon. That and Tyrfing. Spent ages trying to find their secret purposes way back when, only to come up empty handed. I guess they're good tools if you want to cripple yourself for a playthrough.

Wasn't there something about Tyrfing that if you got enough attack you can actually start doing some kind of damage?

Something like that. It's just a kind of inverted weapon in that equipping it actually reduces your base damage (ie, damage dealt without a weapon equipped) rather than adding to it. But once your base damage is high enough, Tyrfing can no longer drive it below zero. It still has no actual benefits though.

Still, I kinda like that it was there. Just adds to the mystery of the game.

Oh my god, jesus thank you. It was starting to drive me crazy. That's some cruel joke on the developers' part.

So I played the 6 handheld Igavanias and am now on SotN as my victory lap. I left this for last because I beat it when originally released but this might as well be my first time cuz I remember none of it. Is the game too easy or are my skills honed from the other 6? I'm in the regular castle still using the Morningstar. The last 3 bosses I just stood in front of and mashed to death and 2 of those I didn't take a single hit because my attacks left them stunned each time. The castle also feels really small. I know it doubles itself once I get to that point but still.

I'm on the Dracula X Chronicles version on PSP. They changed the "Die Monster!" dialogue. It's so iconic, how could they get away with that?

It's not you, SotN is a miserable pile of boredom if you don't equip the Nostalgia Glasses. It's too bad you can't get them anymore as they were a time sensitive drop.

SoTN is really easy. At most you will get a difficulty spike from enemies doing crazy damage early into the second half of the game but then that becomes nothing once you level and/or get better gear

Tried playing Mirror of Fate HD version (just grabbed it on PC to complete my LOS collection on Steam). Ehhhh...it's...not as good as I remember. Dosen't have the pure visceral feeling of Lords of Shadow's 2 combat (everything feels floaty.), the sense of wonder, and adventure Lords of Shadows 1 had, or the joy of exploration, and coolness the IGAvania games had.

Cant recall, does it get better?

I recall the Alucard and Trevor sections being a lot better than Simon's part.
Still average on the whole but I still view it as the most consistent of the LoS games, never getting as high or as low as the other two.

I beat SotN last night, I got a good ending but not the 200% ending cuz ain't nobody got time for that. For the entire inverted castle I had already gotten my fill of the game, so luckily it was easy to just do a big loop and get the pieces of Vlad. There were a few enemies or rooms that could surprisingly fuck you up, I died once or twice not paying attn to the numbers. Just about all the bosses could be defeated laughably easy including Death. There was 1 boss that I just noped on, he was a tall Pharoah like guy who shot lightning and orbs. The first time I got rocked because the usual strategy of stand there and wail on the boss didn't work. The 2nd time I saw his pattern but I already had the pieces of Vlad so I just said forget it and I went and beat the game. Shaft was absurdly easy too. Dracula was better but I had the Cross sub-weapon which is insane. I couldn't tell what exactly did the final strike cuz I had cross, 4 spirits spell, sword familiar, and a multi strike attack going the entire time.

P.S. I suck at the street fighter motions for the spells. I'm so glad they did away with that.

QQ: Is there any incentive for beating Hard Mode for Castlevania for the NES other than bragging rights? Like is the ending at all different?
