Wii U Indie Game Scene. What Happened?

You should probably look at who replaced him and all the work they've done. This is a vacuous statement as if Dan Adelman were some sort of irreplaceable messiah.

Vena, pls. You should know the drill by now. Go find something better to do with your time. :p

Yeah, the indie scene is absolutely barren on the Wii U when you ignore all of the indie games coming to the platform.

Citing games like Rogue Legacy and Tharsis (which is coming to Wii U anyway?) is fine, but where's Freedom Planet, Runbow, FAST Racing Neo, Affordable Space Adventures, AVGN, etc...on the other platforms?

I've heard from developers in the industry that Wii U eShop sales can be very low at times.

Like Wii U eShop games selling 300-1000 units on the low-end.

In addition, sales tend to peter out quickly.

So I understand why some indies might not think it's worth the port. It is possible to sell >10,000 units on the Wii U eShop, so the market can get there, but I don't fault the guys who say no.

I don't dispute this at all but I will say that there are a lot of relatively big devs that release multi-platform games on Wii U without doing any Wii U-specific marketing or even telling people it's available on the platform until it's already out. Like, I'm someone who watches this stuff for a living and it's infuriating to see devs who are like "we didn't tell anyone we were releasing on Wii U, delayed half a year, stealth-released after everyone had stopped waiting and sold nothing" because it's like, no fucking wonder your game flopped.

It's even more perplexing because most of the Nintendo-centric press is desperate for games to champion and will go to bat for any old dreck if you just pitch it to them.

No. I think you're putting words in my mouth. If you want to talk about vacuity maybe you can elaborate on this person.

That's what I find frustrating. They shouldn't and likely wouldn't have have issues getting coverage for their games on Nintendo focused sites. Places like IGN and GameSpot might not care. Then again they might want more coverage on those sections of their websites. IGN tends to fill the Nintendo side with generic gaming news. I can only assume these creators aren't making an effort that all people making a product should make and try to advertise their product. It just takes an email to get the conversation started.

If that is happening then there is a problem but I don't think that it is happening. To many games are appearing on the eShop out of nowhere. Titles I had no clue even existed or were coming.

I don't get it either. The Nintendo fan sites are always actively looking for smaller indie titles that announced. Hell, I had no idea Space Hulk was even still slated for release on the platform. All information we had, is that it was put aside due to financial issues...and then it just releases on the eShop out of nowhere.

Yeah wheres double fine games? They even work better with the gamepad specially for the lucaa arts games.

If you're referring to the Remastered stuff they've been doing lately I'm pretty sure DF has some kind of deal with Sony since those games aren't even on Xbox One. The Cave, on the other hand, was on the Wii U.

Didn't The Cave not even have off-TV play though? Like, at least put in the bare minimum of effort for your port if you want people to buy it.

The indie scene has been steady. Sometimes delays happen and they takrle their time (Oddworld, Hyperlight Drifter, 90s Racer), sometimes there are cancelations (Project Cars, Gone Home), others price and decisions that don't go well with the community (like Space Hulk released last week without the additional content for $30), others are just starting (Binding of Isaac Afterbirth).

Yeah, it may not have many or the same games as the others (though the assumption that the Wui U should be able of running them just because is a bit naive). But that's kind of the point too. Indie games doesn't need to be "big, hyped games" that everyone knows of and are released everywhere.

As beril pointed out it is quite easy to have games on it and the games are there and are still coming, just that under the current circumstances some might prefer to not bother.

2015 ended with the release of FAST, which aside being a great game also exceeded sales expectations. Plus the overall indie scene on Nintendo platforms is segmented between Wii U and the 3DS, which received and is receiving great support.

It was literally a static image of the characters you were using at the time.

While Adelman was the public 'face' of indie relations, due to his time spent with Microsoft, Damon Baker has been just as, if not more so, integral in establishing relationships with indie devs.

Feels like I'm back in 2013 with some of these posts.

Nintendo's indie policies are fine, and the lineup of indie games is good for such a flop of a console. Games like Affordable Space Adventures, Fast Racing Neo, Shantae And The Pirate's Curse and Freedom Planet are a few gems you won't find on PS4/XBO, for example. Mistakes were made, but they were made in 2011-2012, not now (and not by Nintendo's indie relations team, that's for sure).

For some slight bit of context Gunman Clive HD Collection has sold about 9000 copies so far (not counting japan, for which I don't have numbers yet but the initial reports were not very encouraging). Not an amazing number by any means still profitable by most measures: And also I imagine there's a pretty big overlap of 3DS and WiiU owners so it's not a big surprise that people aren't double dipping. It's about 10x the sales of the Steam release of GC2 however. Admittedly I've done an even worse job at promoting that release though and also don't have many press contacts who focus on PC

That reminds me I still need to buy it, will do tomorrow

You'll be glad to know I was one of the 9000 who bought the GC HD, haven't picked up the 3DS originals yet but I do plan too. What tremendous games.

There's been a pretty steady stream of stuff coming out, including a good number of quality games that either released on Wii U first or were the first console release for the game.

Games like Fast Racing Neo, Freedom Planet, and Runbow have recently been pretty successful.

I'm sure they could probably do more but most people would say the relationship NOA & NOE have established with some independent developers has been a bright spot.

Dan Adelam's departure did not herald problems in approachability for multiple reasons. (a.) He was never some one man show nor was he some sort of golden everyman, (b.) his replacement had already been working with both Adelman and indies in getting them to the console, (c.) his replacement has taken major steps in making the eShop a worthwhile place for indies (and in general made some major steps for Nintendo as a whole in their view of indies).

If I recall, Nintendo's indie policies are pretty on-point. The issues seem to be the hardware & the install base.

One thing I will say about the JP Wii U eShop market is that it's a total wasteland; there are next to no Japanese indie games on the service, so they're left to the mercy of two or three publishers who (slowly) localise the occasional western indie game. I'm not surprised games don't sell well there because there's very little reason for Japanese owners to even bother checking the eShop for exclusive games.

The announcement of NX scared off developers. Why put resources into porting to Wii U when you can wait a little longer to see what's next?

I don't thinks there that many indie games that would have have much trouble running on the hardware; so mostly install base.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Why not ask those developers?

There isn't a lack of other indies though

The OP, who seems to be oblivious to the entire eshop
Or the ones coming.

The main post is basically assumptions based on opinions. Of the over 200 indies on the Wii U eShop he doesn't like them and because the PS4 and Xbox are getting more popular games that he/she might like; that something is wrong because the Wii U is not getting those games.

But not the other ones that the Wii U is getting. Those are bad, like the other 200+.

Or something.

Because it's 100% true. Nintendo is at fault for how much of a failure their system was and the lack of Indie games on it.
The same Nintendo that has been making stronger their relationship with indies despite the low sales of the Wii U so that they still see Nintendo as a viable alternative, since they also have the 3DS and new hardware coming.

Some have even said that they are waiting for more details on the next hardware to commit to something.

"Nintendo not being Nintendo" is why it not only has a steady release of indies since launch, but still have for the rest of the year.

People not aware or caring about what's on it is another thing. Like many don't know of Voxel Maker...yet it was released last year. Indies are more than just a few games everyone knows of.

The OP, who seems to be oblivious to the entire eshop
And what is the OP source??? Is not a fact, is her perception..... and i think he is wrong. The relation with Indie devs has improved a lot with the change of policies, thats a fact. And you can find various success stories on the Eshop.

Four indie games were released on Wii U this week.

Five indie games were released last week.

Only one was released on the two weeks before, but they were the Holiday weeks and more focused on sales. We also got Super Mario Galaxy, which would have likely overshadowed anything released that week.

The week before that, we got three games, one of which was Minecraft.

The week before that we got four, one of which was Fast Racing Neo.

The week before that we got nothing, but Xenoblade Chronicles X released that week. We also got Trauma Team as a nice bonus.

So no, I don't think anything negative has happened with indies on Wii U. Nintendo tends to release them in batches, and usually they don't overlap them with their big releases (be it new Wii U games or notable Virtual Console releases).
