Nintendo Removes Controversial Fire Emblem Fates Conversation

Nintendo has told Nintendo World Report that a controversial conversation will be removed from the English version of Fates.

Nintendo of America, in a statement to us, has revealed that a controversial "drugging"/"gay conversion" support conversation in the upcoming game Fire Emblem: Fates will not be present in the North American and European versions of the game.

“In the version of the game that ships in the U.S. and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters.” a Nintendo representative e-mailed us this morning.

In the Japanese version...One of the female characters, Soleil, is attracted to women, and often gets flustered and weak in the knees when she's around them. She often fears that she can't be a "strong and cool woman" because of this. Later in the support conversations if you pair her up with the male protagonist, he spikes her drink with a "magic powder" that makes her see women as men and vice-versa to help her "practice" around women. This was done without her knowing, as she fails to recognize the protagonist at the start of the conversation. Once the magic wore off, she found herself attracted to the male protagonist, and ends up proposing to him, saying that she fell in love with the female version of him, but now loves him as a male.

Oh for fuck's sake wasn't that conversation debunked? It was the character being distracted by qt girls to the point of not being able to handle being near them on the battlefield.

I'm curious what they replaced the dialogue/story with. Also, this PR statement isn't that definitive, since "drugging" and "gay conversion" have very specific denotations/connotations that could mean some aspects of the storyline (from what I remember) have been left in. But I guess we'll find out.

For someone that hasn't followed this game super closely. Here is more detail from the article about the conversation in question.

Yeah, I'm fine with that being altered.

Yikes. If it was indeed like that, it is an improvement.

that makes her see women as men and vice-versa to help her "practice" around women.

So...how would that help her not be nervous around women again? I mean if she sees all the guys as women, wouldnt she just be nervous around them?

More worried about daddy being stressed and looking disgruntled when they explain their kid is weird. Weird being gay here.

Localisation better be good.

I had nothing to say then and nothing to say now. 😵

Regardless of whether or not this is actually offensive, the whole thing is just stupid and confusing so it's perfectly fine that it's gone

I'm European. We're saved from that garbage.

There's a cure for "The Gay" in Fire Emblem, basically..?

Was some mental gymnastics that mad her out to be mentally straight but bisexual when it came to matters of the carnal things. It happens yes but I'm not expecting anything of that level from Nintendo.

Reminds me of Shallow Hal but instead of skinny women becoming fat and vice versa its gender swapping.

Watch it again. It was about seeing the "inner beauty" not slimfast.

Didn't hear about this before. Reading about it now, yeah I'm fine with that being taken out. Really didn't need that in my Fire Emblem game.

Makes world leading predictions like "The sun will rise tomorrow"
I remember hearing about that when it came out in Japan. I wonder how the dialogue will play out now.

Maybe they'll just make her bi or something.

The magic powder thing they could probably rewrite to almost anything. The animations are pretty minimal here like Awakening, right?
