Questions:
Do I need a NicoNico account to watch?
Yes, make one, it's easy

Why does the quality suck?
It's NicoNico

What is Koshien?
It's a National High School Baseball Championship in Japan; that's why the squids are in school uniforms

What's happening Day 1?
Kanto Finals of Block A and B and Squid Sisters Live

What's happening Day 2?
Kanto Finals of Block C and National Finals

Exciting, though it seems to be a more casual tournament (turf war only and set costumes). Are these well known teams? I think it will be fun to watch, plus the vocaloid squid sisters will be pretty interesting. Wonder if there'll be any surprise announcements, like one more clothes update or playable Octolings (they said updates would end in January), but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Turf War... please stop trying to make this happen - Turf War matches are not interesting to watch. TC/Rainmaker/SZ is the only way forward.

Turf War is the only mode though where you can consistently have matches last a specific amount of time. Those matches will always be 3 minutes long. TC/Rainmaker/SZ matches can be decided rather quickly. Hell under a minute if one side screws up and the other seizes upon it. Some can go into overtime but there is no guarantee that will be the case.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I'd like to catch this, as much as possible, given the widely different time zones between Japan and Italy. Hopefully, I'll be able to do that :p

These teams play at a high level. From watching each tournament, it was clear from the start that .Regen and Re:USe were favorites to win their region; many have a NicoNico background, so it's more about prolific individuals I guess. If people want to see an exciting match, watch the Chuubu finals above where the favorite to win is upsetted.

Japanese S+ Squads are no joke. I've been in plenty a battle with some really good SpaltoonGAFfers against them and they're really, really, really good. We almost always lose lol.

Hopefully North America+EU can get some squads up to challenge some of these Japanese squads.

After getting back into Splatoon and playing ranked against S+ Japanese players, this is gonna be fun. (Mainly because I don't have to suffer getting stomped)

Turf War is the only mode I find truly interesting. It's the mode Splatoon was built around, introduced with and the one that hooked me. It's the only mode that takes advantage of every map and the game's mechanics to its fullest. The other modes are decent, but they just don't compare. They feel like what they are: additional modes to the main one.

I've been following Team Gorilla, personally.
Their win over YOUNG☆MAN was amazing.

Only been really following .Regen since it was so easy to find them on Twitter and their members stream often. Being out of the loop with all other teams, Gorilla would still be my underdog and I'm worried about Shikoku and their signature comeback wins.

Feels like as the meta evolves the possibility of that happening at high level play will diminish and they'll become more viable for organized tournaments.

It might guarantee 3 minute matches, but only the last minute actually matters.
Hence modes like SZ, Rainmaker, TC being infinitely more interesting to watch in my personal opinion because they guarantee action through out. A match might end in seconds on Rainmaker but it doesn't really happen that often when you are playing squads - unless there is grave miscommunication and your entire team makes a fatal mistake. Mistakes in Turf War during the first 2 minutes cannot be punished in anyway and as long as a team gets things together in the last minute - they can still come out on top making the first two minutes completely pointless.

Kill Screen Article about the Tournament and developing E-Sport Scene in Japan for the game.

The stakes are high for players: the Splatoon squad that wins will take home approximately one million dollars. But for a country that has been slow to embrace esports, it could also popularize a hobby usually thought of as niche.

Unlike other Asian countries, Japan has not fostered an avid esports community that regularly tunes into broadcasts of League of Legends tournaments and the like. The Japanese competitive gaming scene has centered mostly on console games, while esports elsewhere moved to PC titles. Existing tournaments tend to be smaller affairs held in arcades rather than big stadiums like LA’s Staples Center.

“Splatoon’s game world is poppy and bright, I never feel unhappy while playing,” Nemu Nemu said, highlighting the game’s potential to become the country’s most popular esport. The rules of Splatoon are also much easier for casual spectators to pick up on, especially when compared to the complexity of a game like League of Legends.

Of course, there are roadblocks in Splatoon’s journey to becoming a legitimate esport. Many point to the game’s lack of a voice chat, which makes it hard for team members to communicate, as well as the lack of a designated “spectator mode” for broadcasting tournaments.

urgh pretty sure that prize money is the total for choukaigi, not splatoon only
edit: oh that prize money isn't limited to choukaigi, but various other tournaments...

Shikoku Shirt + Video and the final 3 Kanto rep shirts today.
Almost there. :3

Definitely recommend watch the Shikoku video.

I'm wondering whether or not the Squid school uniform set was selected because it's a Koshien thing or because it's the only clothing set with no branding.

SPECTATOR MODE PLZ NINTENDO

"There, they took advantage of a Splatoon rule where, by covering more of the stage in their ink, they eked out a win at the Tokai regional championship."

Sure, and I beat Doom by taking advantage of the rule that the Cyberdemon has to die if I shoot it enough times.

I've managed to win plenty of games by completing the objective.

Nintendo get your rulesets together, this is shit.

I want to know more about the teams before the finals.

Unfortunately coverage from overseas was near none by anyone besides that killscreen article, so any sort of backstory you'll get will be from watching various nick nico videos linked in the thread, info from Japanese forums, and the team Twitter accounts. So unless you've been closely following at least one of the teams for the last few months there's not much you can do.
