EA: Amy Hennig (Star Wars) and Jade Raymond (SW/New IP) games are "a few years out"

In case anyone was hoping for Visceral's Star Wars game by March 2017, it's not happening.

Got it. Okay, thanks. And aspirational number on R&D as a percentage of revenue, how important is culling less profitable or non-profitable titles
in the portfolio? Do you have an opportunity to do that going forward? How you think about limiting the number of SKUs going forward? Thanks.

Blake Jorgensen - Electronic Arts Inc. - CFO
We are down to less than 15 major SKUs. And that feels like a good size of the business and we are obviously announcing that we are investing in
some action-based SKUs by bringing people like Jade Raymond and Amy Henning into our organization to help build those. And those are obviously
a few years out in our SKU plan.

But clearly we want to try to grow genres, and grow our revenue base with more titles, both digital live services titles as well as traditional console
titles. Part of -- to do that part of it is we have to be ruthless that we don't spend a lot of money on smaller titles, we size them correctly, but we
also want to continue to look for ways to bring new, interesting titles to the market.

Look at Unravel as a perfect case of that. We're trying to address the marketplace for broader titles that address a wider audience in terms of types
of games they are, the types of games people want to play. We are also trying to build enough product to be able to effectively run subscription-based
businesses, and that requires a great portfolio, which we have and will continue to add to. We will always cull, but there's not a ton of things to cut
back on today because we've brought the total number of titles down to a very perfect level for us now.

Give me a vast Star Wars RPG with open choices, branching narratives and different classes.

That, or a Salacious Crumb dance rhythm game.

I figured as much. I want them to take their time and make the best game they can. I'm sure there were a ton of logistics that they had to figure out with the story as not to step on the new canon that they have established with the comics, books, and any future films.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
These games were most likely not started too long ago so I wouldn't doubt these aren't coming for years. They are probably still in pre production phases for them.

Since we aren't getting KOTOR3, I will take any form of this. Hell, I would even buy a mobile game that did it really well.

I was guessing Hennig's game would be out sometime in 2017 but since they're saying a few years out then probably 2018 at the earliest.

Good that they take their time, but I start wondering about their Star-Wars-pipeline. They have to feed the hype around the franchise. Can't see them only doing Battlefront dlcs and expansions for the SWTOR for the next years.

Honest question. Is Jade Raymond a good producer?

I went to her talk at Bafta. She's super engaging, interesting and has great ideas/methods for keeping people happy in game production. People like that inspire teams to do well.

I didn't answer your question in the slightest. But I believe she would be judging by that.

Bit confused by the title Nirolak - arent both games new IP within the Star Wars universe? Or is there implication that the game Jades working on might not be within that universe - tbh I know nothing about what shes up to at EA.

It can be a tad confusing.

Visceral's main (and perhaps only) project is the Star Wars game helmed by Amy Hennig.

Motive, the new studio helmed by Jade Raymond, is intended to make a brand new original IP not related to Star Wars. However, while they hire new staff in order to get to a size where they will actually be able to make this new IP, they are assisting Visceral in the development of Amy Hennig's Star Wars game.

So EA has the exclusive Star Wars license, right? So no 4x or X-Wing games coming out...for a long time if ever?

Even though Visceral's game wont ship until FY2018 the earliest, they might still show it at EA Play in June. At least some kind of teaser

EA has a ten year license on making core oriented Star Wars games.

Mobile games, arcade games, and children's titles have shown to still be available.

I'm not sure what 4X and X-Wing games fall under, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's still EA's purview.

Ah thank you, I wasnt aware how early in dev Motive were, so thats news to me.

My simple assumption was that EA was supporting the SW film releases so expected games to pop up in the same quarter - doesnt sound like theyll have anything for SW8s release (well early 2018 would work I guess) as BFs season pass seems to end early 2017.

Im unashamedly excited about having new SW games...

I'm starting to really regret that EA got the SW license.

I thought they are a great match. But hoped we'll be getting at least one game a year plus some possible mobile or tie in games.

It looks like we will be lucky to have 2 in the 4th year of the generation :-(

Totally ok with this. We have a steady stream of great games coming our way until then. I'm so damn excited for a proper, great single player Star Wars game. Loved Battlefront too.

So you haven't always regretted? Besides from their awesome game engine, I can think of plenty of publishers that might do a far better job than EA. I guess Ubisoft could be worse.

This is kind of weird. Let me start by saying that I agree with you, to a point. But it felt like we were the outliers here for a while. Most of GAF (and indeed, the net) seemed convinced that EA would crank out Star Wars games at the rate of one or even two a year and cited that as a major problem. Expletives and condescending phrases were tossed about to describe what would surely be the publisher's approach. "They'll milk it dry."

Now we're all seeing that they intend to drop big games every couple of years, if that, and I'm not seeing the waves of relief from other members that I'd sort of expected.

Meanwhile, you're bummed about it, and I'm semi-bummed.

If I had to guess, the new game will release around Episode 8 (Fall 2017 or Q1 2018), and then Battlefront 4 in Fall 2018.

Their Rogue One tie-in seems to be releasing Death Star DLC for Battlefront in Fall 2016.

Nah, like I said thought they are a great match, mostly due to the studios and overall quality of their games.

DICE - Battlefront
Bioware -
KotOR 3
Star Wars RPG
Visceral - 3rd person action game/horror game/hack n slash
Criterion or Ghosts (but would rather get Criterion) - pod racing game/starfighter simulation

And since they're a huge publisher, thought they would start a SW license dedicated studio to fill in some strategic blanks.

Not to mention the great engine they have like you pointed out.

I agree that the developers are good, but EA is in charge.
