Media Create Sales: Week 4, 2016 (Jan 25 - Jan 31)

i doubt builder will have minecraft like legs. but i hope it does. still waiting for the west announcement (y)

It's probably wishful thinking, but I hope this is the Vita's Monster Hunter. I'd love to see a 4th quarter (sports analogy, not business) comeback from the system.

DD sold that "much" in Western countries because of price cuts; the game debuted dat 92k in first month NPD (and it shipped 1m in the first month worldwide - guess how the remaining units were sold). 470k units in Japan were sold at full price, instead. The game didn't succeed in the West as it did in Japan also considering the different market sizes. It's not that hard.

You're discounting the fact that in the interim, those cheap copies got into a lot of people's hands who spread positive word of mouth, coupled with a well-received appearance on PS+. The PC release was a test run to see if that positive word of mouth could amount to a sales success and garner the IP a second chance, and by all accounts it has. The title has enough in common with rpg series that have succeeded in the West recently that it's perfectly reasonable to think it could find a solid audience there, if it hasn't already.

Well, the last 3DS game sold 231k units. So the 3DS version might still have a chance of pulling good numbers.

DS Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Nintendo 2008-01-17 383,655
DS Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games Nintendo 2009-11-19 254,341
3DS Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Nintendo 2012-03-01 231,021

200k would probably be an outstanding result seing previous episode sales and the lack of portable entry in 2014.

The series could bounce back in 2020 though I guess.

I think that requires actual investment from the parent company, lol. (And multiplayer. Monster Hunter didn't hunt its monsters to such successes in a single-player experience. This is potentially a case of SE squandering a good thing had they put a little bit more effort into it given the initial positive response but what I consider to be damning lack of long-term future-proofing features... the fact that they effectively announced DQB2 two days ago is equally damning.)

Better but cheaper.

PS Vita had a comparatively good week due to a big release. Lets not get ahead of ourselves and call it "domination". Especially when it isn't even the leading system YTD.

200k would be a good result - we'll see when it's releasing but it might be a good fill-up game for this year 3DS line-up.

Now, bearing in mind TP HD will be a sub 60k affaire, what's the next big WiiU title and when will it drop?

Pokken Tournament the very week after TP HD (3/18).

I mean even FF Theatrhythm could be said to be a failure when you think of it as a rhythm game spinoff of one of the most popular franchises where fans are mad about the music, as per album sales. The game was on a the most popular platform at the time and catered to the demographics by its art style. Looking at the results which didnt even crack 200k and they had to release a phone version of the game,

No no no.... Theathrhythm was released on mobile AND 3DS originally with two different pricing schemes. Square Enix actually said the 3DS version did much better, so that's why it got the "sequel" (Curtain Call) and mobile just got more DLC instead.

Mario Tennis did very well for what it is... almost did better than the US LTD already lol. Good sales for DQ Builders on Vita & PS4. Also great Vita sales. Wii U hardware continues to fall though =/.

Good debut for Builders. The real test now will be if it has even a fraction of the legs Minecraft does. I hope they eventually have some patch that allows for multiplayer play. I don't personally care about it, but for the game to have MC type legs I think they'll need it.

Yeah I hope they patch it in too, but there is more money to be made by only adding it in the sequel.

Seems like Pokken is the most compeling title saleswise in the near future. Zelda U too, but it's too far off.

Paper Mario could be as well when it gets announced.

They've pretty much confirmed it will not be getting MP. They will consider it for DQB2 though.

Patch for multiplayer wont happen. The producer (or something in that vein) said a few days ago in an interview that would be impossible to patch in multiplayer. They said that if there were demand for it, they would concider it if they made another game.

I honestly don't know what are the reasons behind the total lack of hype around the title, we talked about it earlier but it definitely should have been a 500k+ potential seller.

It still looks better than Arslan, has a Vita SKU and the IP is way more popular, so I can't see it opening lower than Hyrule though.

The lack of Comgnet preorder numbers is probably due to the multiple SKU (6?).

It's not just comgnet, I don't think there are high preorders at any retailer. Retailers won't risk to burn with big shipment after so many bombs this December but if word of mouth is good it will have some legs. Gundam, Animal Crossing, Pokemon have many 10ks of unsold copies still sitting at shelves.

But the reality is we went from a potential 500k+ title when it was announced to a 100k+.

Actually, DS3 is March in Japan.

Games that could make a dent on PS4 for the foreseeable future:

February :
Naruto UNS 4
Valkyria Chronicles
Street Fighter V
Attack on Titan

March :
Gundam Breaker 3
Dark Souls 3
Star Ocean 5

April :
Uncharted 4

May :
Dragon Quest Heroes 2

Edit: and I do mean "make a dent", I don't know how many of these will open at 100k+. I guess DS3 and DQH2 will, no idea about the rest.

You're forgetting the biggest release on the horizon - Dead or Alive Xtreme 3. LTD numbers for the system will probably be close to 3 million the week that game comes out.

DoA X3 will serve hard hitting action on the go that will spike sales and set records on Vita...

I thought it would be big as well (not 500k big though).
I think what went wrong here is the game just looks boring/shallow. All the game-play that they've shown looks the exact same. Do dashes left and right till you hit the neck of a monster that kills it in 1 shot. The way it seems to play makes me think it's not a very good IP for games, lol.

They should have focused more of their trailers on the story/cutscenes with a hints of gameplay. That way they could trick people into buying it. :p They did it in the most recent trailer, but now it's too late.

Edit: Looks like they just released some TV spots today. Let's see how it does.

A few things went wrong with AoT this time around:

Strike 1: Game 1 was on a different platform/system family, and that game wasn't very good.
(a.) Some people are simply not going to care to change platforms even if they are fans of the series or of the first game. Random platform switching always has this risk.
(b.) The first game wasn't exactly good... that means that there's now an association with the brand as a game with a less than stellar product. People may have shied form the product.

Strike 2: No airing anime, only slow boil manga (albeit a popular one). The 3DS release was concurrent, somewhat, with the airing schedule.

Strike 3: None of the original promotional material looked all that spectacular. The novelty of AoT has worn off (tying back to S1).

Surprising that PS3 version of Dragon Quest Builders did worse than Yakuza Kiwami.
Considering Yakuza was already playable on PS3 (of course, not a full remake), and the more casual/younger appeal for this.

With a Vita version available it was inevitable.

Nintendo needs to give a break for Mario's spinoffs, outside of Mario Kart. People are getting tired of it already and is suffering a process of diminishing returns.

Solid debut for DQB, did it end up having stock issues as those early reports suggested?

Very interesting that PS4 is so close, I guess that means DQXI PS4 has a chance to not completely bomb?

um, you may be right....but it's really weird timing to make that statement.

In a thread where Mario Tennis overperformed what people were expecting JP (and maybe more than what it deserved) and a day after SW update where Mario Party 10 overperfomed WW and Mario Maker did well, in line with its expectations.

Now that I took a look at Gundam weekly sales again Dengeki is in line with Media Create at opening and following weekly sales. 90k opening and 130k LTD. Going by Dengeki and 45% first week sellthrough after the amazing price collapse there are still 70k unsold copies.

It deservely takes the crown for the bomb of December from amiibo Festival and Pokemon Rumble World.

Btw is Amiibo Festival in the Famitsu charts because it's in the bargain bin now or something? Seems weird that it's selling more than now than it did in the holidays.

I honestly thought that no one in Japan would buy it when there's a portable version on 3DS. These sales are starting to change my mind a bit.

Probably would have been true if the game wasn't seeming like an early 2017 release. But that late is going to be running into decline of 3DS audience activity and NX ramp-up/transitions.

DQB and DQH are a few hundred thousand for a series that sells multiple millions, and the remakes on the 3DS have outsold either title by multiple hundreds of thousands.

shipped 140k ?

anyway, despite the terrible word of mouth and the heavily price drop it's still charting, and probably last week performance is related to the last patch released

Minimum 160k, but probably more like 170k where shipped.
Sell-through was closer to 40% than 60%.

As Vena pointed out, the 3DS would be declining/have declined by time it comes out and I don't think the 3DS would have damaged the PS4 sales to the extent some seem to think.

Yeah, obviously 3DS would move more but that doesn't mean the PS4 doesn't put up respectable numbers.
