Nintendo World Report's "Rumor Cats" from the PlanetGameCube days have returned to talk about some Wii U rumors...(Link to full article)

The rumor claims that Nintendo and Platinum "doubled down on motion controls" for Star Fox Zero during its final months of development.

I also heard that Star Fox Zero is in the final stretches, which makes sense since it's coming out in April. But it's not all cat treats and scratching posts for the game. The foxing minds at Nintendo and PlatinumGames doubled down on motion controls. My owner dug those controls, but seems like most people disagreed with him (like I often do). Could it spell doom for Star Fox? I don't really know.

ShockingAlberto hinted at something similar about the controls.

From what I have heard, development hell would be characterizing it charitably.

More like "Everyone is panicking as the game gets sent to certification because certain fundamental control aspects simply don't work."

I almost pre-ordered but felt like this might be a train wreck.

Hope this isn't true and we'll get a worthy sequel to starfox 64.

I don't think that motion controls per se are the issue, but the fact that piloting in one direction on one screen while shooting in another direction using motion controls on another screen is overly non-intuitive.

This would make a great co-op gameplay (one pilot, one shooter), but single player maybe not so much fun.

It was fun watching people play the demo only to see the helplessness in their eyes. It was also fun to hear their immediate, unfiltered, unreflected reactions, which 9 times out of 10 boiled down to "wow, that was awful".

It wasn't, however, fun to actually play the demo.

Might be one those control schemes that become second nature after a couple hours, but seriously though: most people expect pick up and play gameplay from an arcade shooter like Starfox.

Lots of concern about this title, ever since the awkward reveal.

Doubling down on the motion controls would be such a Miyamoto thing to do, but I will hold out hope that it's not true, because if a lot of the game didn't work, I really don't think they'd release it.

Seriously going to be pissed if the first real Star Fox game in forever is ruined by another weird Miyamoto decision ala Paper Mario: Sticker Star. :(

Would have killed for traditional Star Fox controls or Sin & Punishment 2 IR controls.

Miyamoto just needs to make games again instead of always looking for new 'innovate' ways to play.
Really getting sick of his decisions.

I was under the impression gyro/motion could be turned off.

But who knows how that'd affect alternate controls.

motion control could have worked well if it was like splatoon. instead, they decided to make the wii u gamepad like a cockpit. this also could have kind of worked, but only if the game was first-person or set inside a cockpit. your attention goes between whatever the hell you're doing on the screen and what's happening on the gamepad. the right stick does nothing for the camera, and instead does a few different maneuvers for your vehicle. it's just weird and i don't think it correctly conveys the feeling they were going for.

This game is certainly going to be interesting, at least. I hope this doesn't sour Platinum's relationship with Nintendo.

Always boggled my mind how this game had even a sliver of hype behind it in the first place based on all the footage shown. If it turns out to be a disaster upon release then I won't be the least bit surprised.

Damn motion controls...

Nintendo needs to get rid of all the dinosaurs inside the company. For the best of the company, and the gamers.

eh, sticker star was fine. the game was on handheld and felt okay episodic. plus, i'd rather there be a focus on puzzles versus story in a paper mario game - that was really why super paper mario wound up being the wii's biggest disappointment. as for the game itself, it plays more like paper okami. it's essentially an acton-adventure game with a closed-off battle system. if you were expecting the thousand year door 2, and i kinda was, i can understand the disappointment. knowing the backlash ahead of time let me prepare for something awful, but i thought the final product was pretty good, especially compared to its letdown of a predecessor.

As someone who doesn't enjoy even the supposedly good examples of motion control, I can safely say that if good traditional controls aren't an option there's no way I'll buy it.

This series hasn't been free of gimmicks or gameplay contrivances since Star Fox 64. Multiple vehicles, being shoehorned into Dinosaur Planet, SF Command's map mode...

Look... could you just make a fucking traditional space shooter? Just try it once in two decades, and let's see how that works....

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Motion control ha been optional from day one.

Hopefully this rumour means there will be a normal gyro mode like the 3DS game as well as the more extravagant cockpit view, 64 was perfect with gyro.

Platinum + Star Fox monkey paw (Andross paw?) wish

This game is the exact definition of monkey paw.
The game has all I wanted: Platinum Games, really badass title and I love the charac design, which I always wanted, mix of the original Snes one and new one.

Except all for the rest, it's slow, unexciting, boring, unambitious with forced gimmicks.

I feel like most of the hype is based on the fact it's an vehicle based game (versus Adventures, Assault's on foot sections, Command's strategy elements) and that it's being made by Platinum.

Everything I know about post-GCN Nintendo tells me that NCL really doesn't want iterative new installments for games that don't sell crazy good. They want new "innovative" sequels that'll grow the audience of franchises. F-Zero and all of their sports games are immediate casualties (since they aren't obvious marketable gimmicks to be added).

Problem is that by trying to add gimmicks to Star Fox they make it worse. No one wants a Star Fox adventure game, cumbersome on foot segments, of slow strategy. You want a fast responsive action packed space shooter.

I just still don't understand what they were going for with this game's controls. It seems like nothing but a worse way to do something that was already done in games like Sin & Punishment 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising. Like I seriously see exactly zero advantages to the game controlling the way it does.

How are they so stubborn with this game? Every preview I saw for this game talks about how terrible the controls are and Shiggy is still staying the course and letting it control the games design, which is obviously boring to slow to support the motion controls.

They're going to push a completely undesirable product out the door and everyone can see it coming. No one wants what they're making.

Forced motion controls: Nein. (As in I'm not a fan of this.)

Rumour Cats? Sounds like the key to SEO heaven.

I hope I like whatever they do, but, its sad that we may have another Starfox that isn't free from some sort of nonsense. At the very least, this will still be the closest we have come to SF64.

Nintendo putting a high profile game out with bad controls also doesn't happen much, it would be a surprise if they did indeed force motion controls even if they weren't working that great.
