Media Create Sales: Week 4, 2016 (Jan 25 - Jan 31)

I asked how long Splatoon's impact would sustain itself last year and it seems we have the answer now. Splatoon, with aid from SMM, managed to carry the Wii U for roughly 8 months (June - Jan).

Impressive to say the least.

Called it back in November.
I personally see it fading a lot after the holiday boost ends. It will still chart but I think it will sell around 5k weekly and the long term boost it provided will start to fade. I would be happy to be wrong though.

Granted Splatoon is still selling better than I thought, but yes the hardware boost is starting to fade.

common sense, that´s pretty redundant to say the least.
There are many that doesnt follow the mobile gaming business that closely, so i wouldnt say that its common sense. The article also has some interesting numbers regarding developing costs.

Production values are becoming higher and higher, and also there is a lot of work going into updates and stuffs. While the bulk of development costs in a traditional dedicated environment is concentrared before the launch, in mobile gaming I can imagine a lot of efforts going into the full lifecycle of the product.
Yeah, that is probably why mobile games that arent doing to well are being shut down relatively early, not spending more money on further updates and such.

By the way, are many of these bigger mobile games tied to online servers? As it cost money to operate those?

There is nothing AAA about Mario Tennis tho

Why not? It's a $50 game made by a first party. It's not like its an ios FTP game or a sub $10 digital download. YOU and others may think it should be a $10 game because that's what its worth to you, but fact of the matter is that it's a full game physical release. I am anxiously awaiting a new tennis game with real ATP/WTA players but for now Mario Tennis is the best new tennis game we have.

He didn't say that, check the definition of AAA.

These are both correct. Production values are higher, and the cost structure is akin to an MMO where you have an initial investment, but also a continual investment after the product launches in additional content.

For example, Hearthstone's initial version was made by 15 people, but now it's a team of over 50 doing the updates to keep up with the demand for new content befitting the success of the product.

This is something i have been say is going to happen for years .
The price for mobile games are going to keep on going up and up .
Them being f2p is not going to help also going to be interesting to see the market in the next 5 years .

Great day for Naruto on Rakuten. However, Builders Vita sales remain strong. It could end up being again the best selling game of the week.

If I remember correctly second week prediction for DQB for vita and PS 4 by YSO is of 30-40k. I don't remember past Naruto first week sales but I expect them to be more then 50k.

And you are right, of course. More than 50k seems a round bet. However, first week for Builders (at least Vita version) surpassed YSO expectations due to its stock problems. Hiska shared the sellthrough and it's around 40k left to get the 100%, so I assume a re-stock must be around the corner again, at least this weekend. That's everything based on assumptions, obviously.

If anything, a good bit of stock was still left in the wild for the PSV (naturally from larger stock). Obviously it will get restocked soon and demand will persist but I don't think YSOs second week is going to be that far from reality.

Yeah, me neither; was referring to Rakuten, btw. I suppose during this weekend some stores would have sold those 40k left, something that would represent a decrease of 80% from the previous week. But, I guess you are right since we don't have any hint yet. It seems YSO will have a funny week, this time.

Dunno. WoM on my grapevine isn't the greatest after a few hours past the demo (seems verticality becomes super tedious and building cool stuff is cumbersome) but its still positive. Its a RPG a lot more than builder. My friends little bro is super disappointed with no multi for school and after school. Lots of back to Minecraft time, and then Splatoon and the sort at home.

Of course sample size is small. :p

But no multi is going to lead to a lot of reselling.

mario tennis is an AAA game now? I thought it is a cheap game without any content.

Mechanically solid. Content parched. /shrug

Definitely not AAA. Could have been so much more if it just had a few more months in the oven.

If the AAA label should follow how many contents the base game has, then 90% of nowadays AAA games should not be called AAA at all.

True, and there seems to be some mis-understanding about what AAA is, but in any case I don't think Mario Tennis is it. The argument seems to be that it's the only tennis game with any kind of budget behind it in recent years, but that doesn't really mean much.

My point wasn't about Mario Tennis specifically - I haven't played the game and I don't know much about it. Just saying that contents should not be the primary factor to label a game AAA.

I simply said what the game has been described here.

I don't think is an AAA game for several things not only content.

So Dragon Ball XenoVerse is now at 3.13 million shipped:

http://www.famitsu.com/news/201602/05098843.html
Japan: 230,000
Asia: 60,000
North America: 1,780,000
Europe: 1,050,000

Includes digital sales.

I know the total provided is 100k more than that region breakdown, but maybe it includes South America or they rounded some numbers down.

Tekken 6 did 3.5 million: https://twitter.com/harada_tekken/status/68644608795615233

Given it sounds like Namco is losing Dark Souls (presumably in favor of self publishing), I believe this makes Dragon Ball XenoVerse either Namco's biggest or second biggest series depending on how Tekken 7 does.

Note: I'm excluding things like Super Smash Bros since that's published by Nintendo.

Kuma Tomo isn't stylised as Kuma ● Tomo but Kuma ❤️ Tomo. It's all about the love.

Actually, isn't Gotouji some kind of all Japan region mascot party game here? How well does it perform here?^_^
Gotouchi Tetsudou is a board game also on Wii U where you go around Japan and find mascots such as Kumamon, Funassyi and some even freakier ones. It actually is really fun other than some horrid heel called something like Ojapon who not only seeks to ruin your game but ruin the game. It'll sell maybe a thousand more btw so don't anticipate anything spectacular.

Only 53 Xbox Ones have been sold this year in Japan? 😦
Why is that lower than the weekly total?

Edit: those numbers don't seem to add up, what am I missing? Am I not adding a zero somewhere?

So do we know anything about detective pikachu's performance? I'm curious about the stealth release.

I guess all we have are weekly and all-time eshop rankings?

DQB debuted at #12 in the Vita chart

next big thing to come:

Kan Colle Kai

chances to be among the best opening : high
chances to enter the top 5 : some
chances to be the biggest drop on week 2 : very high
:D

It's not really a huge discrepancy, it's just a rounding error. What you have to understand is that all TV ratings, retail sales, etc are extrapolation formulas based on sample tracking. They don't literally count every single purchase. So when we're talking about super niche sub 10k stuff, you can get what seem like large percentage differences simply from having different tracking samples. It doesn't really mean anything in the end.

It's not really a rounding error, but more an errors stemming from sampling biases. This is more likely to occur for niche games because they are typically not as spread as best-selling titles, increasing the likelihood of misrepresentation.

Well I'm aware of that, but even taking that into account to have a 100% difference between two trackers is still something we don't see very often (or at all).

Having it happen for two "games" the same week is a bit strange, coupled with the fact both are in fact anime releases, I just wondered if in this particular domain (anime/game hybrid) there's one tracker better than the other or they're just all inaccurate in their estimations. (because the kind of customer they are targetting probably don't buy their products at the same place the random "gamer" does)

EDIT: Also interesting to see that Oricon is closer to Dengeki's numbers

Also the difference wasn't that big for the previous volume of Im@s CG (with Dengeki still being closer to Oricon than Famitsu and M-C)

But yeah discussing about sub 10k release is a lot of fun !

I'm a bit too lazy to go into older volumes to see if it's the first time, or not, that we see such a big difference between trackers

I think another good example was Darius, 7k on Famitsu which tracked online only limited version and M-C, which didn't track (3k)
don't remember how was Dengeki result
