[DF] Face-Off: Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - PS4, XB1, PC

Paired with the 1080p pixel count, the rustic Japanese villages and colourful fighters stand out with much greater clarity compared to their last-gen counterparts and the visual experience is very, very close on both consoles - and indeed PC. Shadow quality is the only point of differentiation here, with these elements appearing darker and better defined across characters and dynamic objects on PS4, though this isn't always clearly visible in every scene.

However, given the relatively low frame-rate it is surprising to see both consoles struggle to maintain a consistent level of performance, with PS4 and Xbox One exhibiting issues in different areas. Alpha-heavy scenes see both consoles hit hard for short bursts, leading to temporary slowdown when magical attacks are unleashed

On the flip-side, performance is more solid on PS4's adventure mode. Here we are given room to explore locations while taking on quests and battling enemies in a world set after the events of the main story - a nice distraction from non-stop fighting. Frame-pacing issues remain on PS4, but performance drops occur less frequently than Xbox One and this translates into less jarring movement when traversing more populated areas of the game.

The PC version - just like previous series entries - is capped at 30fps, with v-sync permanently disabled, meaning a constant tearing is present on-screen - but this can be sorted via a forced v-sync engaged via the GPU control panel. Regardless, the sheer lack of scalability in the game is breathtaking: there's no way to overcome the 30fps limit and resolution selections are limited to just 720p and 1080p. Even with this remarkable lack of in-game selectables, there's still the sense that the game's hardware requirements are too high. Despite the 30fps limit, an overclocked GTX 750 Ti can't handle a consistent 1080p30 - we need to move up to the more capable GTX 950 to get the job done.

Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4: PS4 vs Xbox One Frame-Rate Test

Lock if old.

So basically, it has frame pacing issues on both consoles and a very limited PC port. Weak.

Though I don't really agree on the 750ti remark by DF. Despite its performance in more CPU-limited games, one needs to remember that a 750ti is simply a bit slower than a PS4, so rendering the exact same game at the exact same performance level actually shouldn't be possible.

Paging Durante
I don't even like the Naruto games.

Xbox One has more frame drops, but I dislike the frame pacing issues on PS4 in battle even more.

The game does not look bad, but it should perform better on all plattforms for what is shown on the screen imo.

Were the older games also 30 fps and this limited in options on PC? I don't remember having any framerate or tearing issues with Storm 3 but my memory is a bit fuzzy.

With no in game v-sync option and bare bones image resolution options (especially when you can actually set our own resolution in the ini file) it really puzzles me how PC was the lead platform for this game.

30fps lock is probably due to key-framing, and 1080p is because "That's how high the anime resolution gets!"

Well, some of the early cutscene are basically slideshows, so they'd be unaffected by the resolution, they'd stay the same.

FXAA and 30fps - not even steady. I don't think this is very impressive at all compared to Yakuza Kiwami or Gravity Rush Remastered recently at double the framerate and a cleaner, more vibrant look overall.

Look how smudgy the building textures look here, and the ground, yeesh.

This is current-gen only, right?

edit: Xbone seems to have a slightly wider&taller FoV in battle (or there's an intentional fish-eye distortion on PS4/PC missing from XBO)

Yes but based on previous gen engine reused to exhaustion and hardcoded to 30 fps.

Anyone who spent more than 3 min looking at previous entries engines and ports would have known that this game would be locked to 30fps and probably poorly ported.

The adventure mode is half assed and tightly budgeted throwaway mode, so no surprise there. Hell they had to skip animated cutscenes that were in previous games for stills in story mode. I blame budget issues :(

Well, the Xbox one also has the distorted particles. Which are all over the place.

Kamui or force like particles distort into squares..

I hope they improve the performance a bit.. I played it for much of the day and its such a fast paced game with so much happening on screen that the minor framerate issues at times don't seem too bad, but I can still notice them. Hopefully CC2 can at least get the frame pacing under control on PS4, this has been an issue several times before and has been fixed.

The game accepts any resolution from the .ini. I can run the game at 5120x2880 and get 30fps on a GTX 980. Like previous games, the game doesn't use the GPU properly, but GeDoSaTo seems to fix that.

So help a broths out guys. Between Xbox and ps4 is one obviously better? I got two controllers for Xbox and loves me some local multiplayer but if it is better on ps4 then I'll suck it up and get it there. Ps. I have no idea what frame pacing is.

For this game? PS4. I have had very bad experiences with this game's online on Xbox. It's either not working or red bars from people who are supposedly from the same region as I am. PS4 people seem to have it better in that regard.

Then there's the graphical glitches and a bit more slowdown on Xbox One.

If you have the option, go PS4.

Yeah. Game looks nice enough, but I was still surprised by how... slight the improvements from last gen seemed to be overall. It's probably an unfair comparison, but looking at the leap from UNS3 to UNS4 on a technical level is worlds away from the leap from the last UN game on PS2 to UNS1 on PS3.

Yeah this just looks like an upressed PS3 game with more particles ¯_(ツ)_/¯

How can the video game installment of one of the biggest anime franchises out there have budget issues? Drop in sales or something?

We knew this from the start. CC2 is doing 3 current gen only projects at once(not including Naruto and one of them being a lot of work on FF7R).

They probably actually only have a small team on this game by comparison to the rest of the studio. The still frames for many events outside of game scenarios shows that they were cutting corners.

My thing is: Naruto Ultimate Ninja storm series is still one of the best visually arresting games today, both in art style and pure stuff happening on screen...even when the engine was made in 2008.

So knowing that, why would an upgrade that 'takes advantage' even be necessary?

Your saying that when DBZ Xenoverse and the other garbage DBZ games from last gen exist?

That's probably because the vast majority of the assets are quite literally ripped straight out of the last two games. Compared to the first Storm game where they first unveiled their new engine and built everything from the ground up and ofc the jump from SD to HD.

The amount of animation they had to dedicate to some of these fights seems quite expensive.

Well, despite it having a faulty options menu, you can go to the .ini and set the resolution you wish. and the game looks very very good at high resolutions:
Well, that's a lot better than not supporting arbitrary resolutions at all.

Still don't see why you wouldn't use 40 lines of code to populate your option menu with the supported system resolutions.
