Sakurai states that he wanted Geno to be a playable fighter in Brawl, and apparently Wii U/3DS as well. He also acknowledged that Geno is popular, especially when talking about old characters.

Well, I'll be.

I always did like Geno as a character, but I just thought he'd be a strange inclusion, due to the fact that he's a one-off character from a Mario spinoff game from years ago. Most of the third parties in Smash tend to be worldwide gaming icons...but then again I suppose Bayonetta shows that not every third party needs to be super famous, so eh.

Sakurai mentioned he actually did briefly consider Takamaru for playable status. Ultimately he backed off from it considering he felt that Takamaru was too obscure.

One thing I think that would give Mysterious Murasame Castle over those games is that it was initially developed in-house by Nintendo EAD.

Sakurai has never really put many second party based IPs in Smash as playable characters. There's only about four of them, those being Pokemon, Kirby, Fire Emblem and Mother, and they're either A. popular, successful and long running and/or B. have some sort of connection to Sakurai/HAL Labs.

At the very least, as long as this hypothetical Murasame reboot was decently successful as PO!! Wii was, I'm sure Takamaru would be included.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised that Saki of all characters stuck around as an assist trophy.

But yeah, now that you mention it, SSB4 has literally no acknowledgement of Star Successor, does it? Even Dark Dawn at least got a music track. Weird.
