Amazon Kindle |OT| of eInk superiority

My 1st gen Kindle is still going strong.

Do people still miss the buttons or is the touch screen swiping actually better? I think i'd miss the buttons, though when my fiancee is trying to sleep next to me the clicking can be a little annoying..

Is it worth upgrading?

I upgraded from a Kindle Keyboard to a first-gen Paperwhite, and I immediately fell in love with it. The front-lit screen is amazing, and being able to tap or swipe to change pages is actually nice because it allows me to hold it in more ways while still being able to change pages. And, yeah, no clicking sound is nice, too.

any news about new Kindles for the holiday season?
My gf wants one, I found a Kindle for a good price, thinking about getting it, but not sure because maybe there is something new coming out soon and I dont know.
also, is the paperwhite worth the double of the price of the 'normal' kindle?

Goodreader reported a couple of times this fall that an all new model refresh was due this month.

That was the only site that ever mentioned there would be an upgrade. Any other site that reported on it picked it up from that single source. I'm not saying it isn't true, but normally Amazon would have already announced and released a new Kindle by this point (it's nearly end of November right now). If they wanted to refresh the Voyage for the Christmas season, they're quickly running out of time, I'm not believing a refresh is coming this year.

Edit: I see that tomorrow (Nov 19th) is the anniversary date of the original Kindle being released. (2007). If anything were to happen regarding an announcement, it would be tomorrow. If nothing happens, don't expect a refresh this year.

Got the Kindle Fire today - does anyone know whether the app data for each one syncs with the cloud for your account? I share the account with a family member so I don't want to have issues if we are both using the same apps on different Kindle Fires with different usernames (social media, etc.)

I didn't see an active Kindle Fire thread so I'm guessing this would be the place to ask

I've a 6th Generation Kindle Paperwhite (the one with 212 ppi)

Is it worth upgrading to the 7th Generation? (300 ppi goodness)?

on a side note, do you guys turn on Automatic Book Updates?

and did anyone buy the eBook for The Hunger Games? There's a new version/edition with the movie cover... Is there any actual difference for the Kindle Edition?

---
Paperwhite by a wide margin.

Edit: congrats! Be sure to explore the weird indie books available on the Kindle store. There is some amazing stuff on there!

any recommendations?

Amazon Brazil had a surprisingly great deal on Black Friday. Got a Kindle 7th gen for less than 40 euros, free shipping. This is just awesome, probably the cheapest price on earth.

Are you talking about the movie tie-in versions of the kindle editions? If so, there is no difference between them except for different artwork for the cover (and the price).

Amazon's running a massive eBook Cyber Monday sale. A few mainstream hits, lots of smaller oddities, and a ton of indie books.

You can also get 25-40% off a Kindle Unlimited subscription. The cheapest is $44 for 6 months.

hmm yea that's one. the other one is Divergent. There's two edition, one plain? and one Collector's Edition.

Is that a deal or a special promotion with purchase?

any recommendations on books? (mainstream hits, etc)? I bought Harper Lee's Go Set a Watchmen

Just a normal deal, you don't need to buy anything else to get the kindle unlimited sale price. I was pretty happy with my six months I got around this time last year; lots of stuff to discover and a decent amount of classics that went the self published route.

I bought a ton of books off my wish list, but I can't recommend them because I haven't read them yet (books like Range of Ghosts, Inverted World, The Glass Bead Game). Haven't heard the best things about Go Set A Watchmen, but maybe you already know the context for the book.

bought a few 1.99 priced books (seemed interesting enough)
I'm kinda tempted on Kindle Unlimited... but the price still feels rather prohibitive

Finally pulled the trigger on the Kindle Paperwhite (just the wifi model). Looking forward to using it to read all my light novels.

I bought a Paperwhite yesterday too and should be arriving tomorrow. My Kobo mini kicked it a week ago so this offer came at the perfect time.

I do have a question however. I have an Amazon US account which I have used to buy games in the past, as well as books which I read on my smartphone using the Kindle app. Since I bought my Paperwhite from the Italian store, can I use it with my Amazon.com account? If yes, how?

Sorry for the stupid question but this my first Kindle device.

Might already be registered to the Italian store. If that's the case, unregister it from there and re-register it to your U.S. account. It should work. Keep in mind, though, that I'm just making an assumption and have no actual experience switching from one country to another.

You cannot have books from both accounts simultaneously, as far as I know.

Thanks for the info!

I am already aware of that last part and it's perfectly fine, I don't have any digital content on my Italian account.

I believe it was only on Black Friday. They are so fast to deliver it, at first it was supposed to come on Thursday, which I though was already good enough (with BF many people should have bought things in their site), and then... Monday noon it was already in my hands. impressive. I bought many other things on BF from other sites, just one of them arrived (on Monday as well), still waiting for 3 other packages from different sites.

When can we expect a refresh of the different models, and what kind of features are expected to be added?

Hard to predict now. Amazon did not update the Voyage last year and they quietly released the Paperwhite update in June 2015 instead of the Fall. The Fire models are still getting yearly updates, though.

I don't think there are any resolution upgrades for eInk even in the works. The frontlights are all pretty stellar. eInk seems to be shifting their focus to different applications outside e-readers. So I don't know that contrast increases are a priority or if they can even do much more, but the Carta screens launched with Kindles without any previous announcement. So who know? And I don't think color eInk will ever be a thing. Amazon would have to go with a different tech. Amazon could improve hardware elements like adding back in audio, but I think most people are content with using that on their phones and tablets.

That really just leaves performance and memory improvements, which are so minor to the consumer that Amazon would just do quiet updates.

Got an email about a big firmware update coming.

I updated my Voyage. Is it possible to hide the progress percentage and page location in the bottom left corner? I had them hidden prior to updating the firmware and can't figure out how to hide them again.

Press on it to toggle it, eventually it will turn off.

I don't see any rumors of new Kindle devices anywhere.

I wouldn't expect many updates for e-Ink devices from here on out.

Thanks guys. Seems like now's a good time to buy~

Here and there. I use it primarily because it adds a nice protective layer that's easy to clean, and place and remove from the device.

I was really hoping to find a case that opens like a book, but I guess it's not really necessary. Thanks for the recommendation!

Also - anyone have Kindle Unlimited recommendations? I have the free month but I don't see a lot on here I'd be too interested in (mostly non-fiction).

Just traded in my last generation Paperwhite for the added credit in order to upgrade to the higher resolution screen. Only question is, is the Voyage worth the cost premium? I might go Special Offer-less this time actually regardless. I haven't bought anything through the Special Offers in probably like two years.
