Nintendo Life Rumor: EA and Nintendo to have meetings in March regarding NX.

To be fair, I do think there's an overlap of Nintendo fans and FIFA/Madden fans. This group has in recent times gotten their sports fill on a different console though.

Y'all give EA shit for the supposed 'unprecedented partnership' with the Wii U but I can't blame them for what happened - at all. This was totally on Nintendo and I can't imagine them trying to build a sports fanbase on the NX by doing all the things EA wants them to do/things that cost a lot of money.

So Nintendo made a second rate madden and FIFA for Wii U?
Nintendo released a Wii U port of ME3 at the same time as the trilogy released on other platforms?
Nintendo cancelled an apparently complete Wii u port of crisis 3?

No the unprecedented partnership collapsing was all EAs doing

If it's like what they did with Mass Effect and the Wii U the NX will get Madden '17 while Xbone/PS4 get EA Sports Collection '17 for the same price.

Oh boy.

The demographics propagating such a mentality must be interesting. Do they suspect sports enthusiasts would purchase multiple systems in one generation? That bundling their yearly roster update with the new Nintendo console would convince consumers without a console to buy it over the other two consoles with the same game included? That Nintendo fans themselves would buy more systems if sports games were featured more prominently? Will Mario be dunking hoops with the Pistons while Waluigi shows off some sick Nike kicks?

I'll be glad to pick up plenty of sports games on my NX, as long as Nintendo publishes them

Slightly related but ever since Nintendo announced their partnership with DeNA the idea of the unprecedented partnership being an Origin deal gone sour seems totally plausible. At the time it seemed silly that Nintendo would hand their online infastructure to a third party.

The problem with skipping a generation of a system is that even if the NX is a massive success it's hard to build bridges with those consumers.
Wasn't madden Wii U based on a year old madden with a roster update?
Though a lot of people say EA tried, I'm not so sure they did.
There was that and NFL combined with an outsourced port of Mass Effect 3 competing with the trilogy re-release at retail at a lower cost.
I think by January they started cancelling everything like Crysis which was apparently almost done.
I know Nintendo needs to put in a lot more work this time around especially since they're had all these issues coming from their most successful platform and now they're coming from their least successful home console, but I hope 3rd parties do the same.

I don't care about EA but them having dev kits since last year is another twig to throw on the 'NX home console releasing this year' fire. Of course having their full support would be good for NX sales.

I really wanted that portable.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
How would this even work when MS has co-marketing for EA Sports games?

What would you want them to say tho?
This article is explicating say it's between Nintendo and EA Sports division. The execs being "quoted" have one agenda, get a sports audience on the platform so I can sell my games. It's less an overall EA portfolio discussion this reads like, more about "hey if you want my games, give me a plan that will enable me to sell them"

Negotiations are renewed every year. Part of what this reads like seems to me to be they are indicating to Nintendo that they can also pay to play, outbid MS or give us a dedicated promotional platform so we have bigger market share then our competitors and sure, we will sell with you.

Net net, nothing really groundbreaking here

awesome!

this sets the precedent of Nintendo Life announcing this unprecedented event in the hopes that nintendo acquires unprecedented EA games in a marvelous precedented Nintendo ecosystem!

I'd love to play precedented EA sports games in unprecedented hardware like NX

Electronic Arts is telling Nintendo that they need to do a better job at cultivating a sports audience on Nintendo platforms...

...they want Nintendo to do a better job marketing NX to fans of sports games during major televised sporting events...

I feel like I've been saying the same thing about Nintendo for years.

If you don't have Fifa or some other good football game, you don't have boys in Europe as a demographic anymore. You just don't. Not having football is proof that the fucking thing is ultra-uncool and doomed to failure, which becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Even if you buy the thing to play Pokemon, you can justify it to your friends as 'Yeah, I like playing Fifa' and everyone will understand. If the console doesn't have that, you must be buying it for 'kiddie reasons'.

I saw Fifa 14 sell so many PS4s to my friends, and that was just for the resolution bump.

I also saw Champions League advertising sell about 100 PS2s to my friends and dorm-mates back in college. So many people watch those games, that if you have a good marketing campaign there it's hard to fail.

Nintendo has a ton of things they can do to attract sports fans, but content-light retreads of Mario Tennis etc at 60 euros will not get the job done.

Sounds thoroughly implausible to me. There must only be a handful of people within EA who would know the specifics about any private negotiations with Nintendo, and for something as informal as this, there's probably even fewer in the loop.

And if this source is as well-placed as that, surely there would be less sensitive and more interesting things worth leaking - like what the NX actually is. Unless, of course, the objective is to create some sort of vague story that can't ever be proved or disproved.

I think it's good that Nintendo & EA are talking, and EA's definitely within their rights to ask Nintendo "What are you going to do to grow the sports game audience on your platforms?.

Knowing Tamaki's history, some of the individual points are probably overblown. I doubt EA's support hinges on what sports leagues have apps on the NX. If those are just suggestions/ideas thrown around and not firm demands it makes more sense.

The good news is the NX shouldn't get crippled ports if EA decides to support them (assuming the NX console is at least ~XB1 power) given how Frostbite and Ignite are set up as engines for most of EA's games.

Neither company will fix the big reasons their relationship has gone south since N64.

I think it's good that Nintendo & EA are talking, and EA's definitely within their rights to ask Nintendo "What are you going to do to grow the sports game audience on your platforms?.

and as a consumer I'm going to ask EA if shit ports or late ports are something they think an aware nintendo audience wants or any for that matter? Can't fix a problem if all you offer is crap that is day late and dollar short.

Giving EA a good deal on EA access would be a nice way to secure some support since PS isn't allowing it.
I wonder if EA will support the NX portable as well.
They didn't do much of anything on the 3DS despite its success and I think there's probably a market for that
Could this explain why Nintendo went to Orlando?
What's this about?

Personally I'm inclined to think it wasn't origin that caused the breakdown, I reckon it was because Nintendo were allowing used games, we know MS were going to block them before the 180 and rumours back then suggested Sony would too

I used to play lot's of FIFA back on the Gamecube and I've been craving a good FIFA game in a while but since I only own a Wii U, I'm screwed. Hope this becomes true and some other big 3rd party publishers can join. Nintendo needs to go big or go home this time.

Tamaki has said that he's spoken to NX engineers so if you believe him he's pretty well connected. And just because he has access to these connections doesn't mean they'll tell him everything they know.

This is what I was thinking. Unless they think MS won't care about whatever NX versions are coming for some reason

Yeah, but it's hard to imagine MS being okay with that since the co-marketing is costing them while Nintendo was basically just get it for free.

What would you want them to say tho?

I fully understand the idea of them wanting to know how Nintendo intends to help EA Sports games be successful on their platform. That quote just stood out to me because the bundling is with MS this gen.

Perhaps these meetings will coincide with GDC 2016 (March 14-18)?

Nice anyway to know they are actively working to repair their relationship.

I'd just take SSX Tricky HD at this point.

This is all I want; this is all I need.

No stupid dubstep remix, just the authentic sounds of Run DMC sampling "My Sharona" as the dulcet sounds of them rapping It's tricky to rock a rhyme to rock a rhyme that's right on time it's tricky fills my ear drums. This would get EA in my good graces, even more so than Mirror's Edge.

Gotta be honest, this reports reads like a badly written rumor.
Not that I don't believe that EA and Nintendo are having meetings, of course.

According to sources within EA, this is actually seen as something of an insult, and the company will be asking Nintendo to consider shipping NX consoles with leading EA Sports titles, such as FIFA and Madden

This part in particular made me laugh.

I'll be happy to be disproved of course, and to see if this actually means anything.

I was going to say almost the exact same thing. I know a lot of people who bought the PS4 just for Fifa. That game is not something that's popular on Neogaf, but it's a massive system seller and Sony and Microsoft obviously know that.
And honestly even a very good Mario football game isn't going to solve that, Nintendo just needs to make sure they have Fifa 17(?) with all the bells and whistles and an online interface that works.

But knowing Nintendo, they will probably just make Sonic & Mario at the world cup.

Not a defense of Nintendo(because they let it get to this point) but having to outbid their competitors just to get the game is kind of untenable situation. MS would still be getting up-to-date versions of Fifa and Madden even without their exclusive marketing and EA Access.

Personally I'm inclined to think it wasn't origin that caused the breakdown, I reckon it was because Nintendo were allowing used games, we know MS were going to block them before the 180 and rumours back then suggested Sony would too

I'm not too sure because I'm fairly sure that's the exact kind of thing Nintendo would do if third parties wanted it.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Sounds quite reasonable.. EA is shipping some the biggest games with Fifa, Battlefield and Co. every year... Nintendo need to join the 3rd party console bundle train.

PS4 and Xbox One sell a lot because all of the big fall titles have bundles.

What's Nintendo Life's record with these kinds of rumours?

In any case, it's not really any kind of stretch to imagine that they'll put out some games at least in the system's launch period. They were clearly completely ambivalent to the Wii U before it even launched, but they still put out a few titles in and around the launch (and as much as you might complain about ME3 or NSF:MW being late ports, they were actually well executed and made good use of the hardware).

Furthermore, if Nintendo are actually intending a shared library between their home console and handheld then that's a substantially larger install base for EA to sell to than Wii U was alone.

Diehard Nintendo fans really are Nintendo's worst enemy. I mean the whole fuck EA we don't need them mentality is why Nintendo is in the position they are.

Nintendo needs to play nicer with the 3rd parties and the 3rd parties playing nice with them will happen . It is all about MONEY and Third Parties want to make more of it. If giving some EA titles a little extra attention means getting serious support its worth it even if the title isn't something you diehard gives a shit about.

Wii U was a fucking disaster from the day they reset the Wii HD development and decided Wii in HD wasn't a gimmick enough and chased the tablet. Regardless how delusional diehards are Nintendo cannot survive multiple Wii Us and have a future. Wii U took a nice chunk out of that precious warchest and more Wii Us will empty it completely.

Nope. The Fifa and Madden games on Wii U were based on the previous years games but with the rosters updated.

That's normal ;) They make versions for legacy platforms until literally no one is buying them and do you think the PS3 versions are all that different anymore or the PS2 games they made until a year ago.

All Nintendo needs to secure is Madden, FIFA, Battlefront, Battlefield and Mass Effect. Did I miss anything else that is truly needed on NX?

Because MS has spent years building an audience for those games. Nintendo hasn't so yeah, they're going to have to buy themselves out of their current situation in order to convince both consumers and publishers to buy in.

Is this the new NX discussion thread? Cuz thr other one is dead lol

Interesting news. Looks like NX floodgates are going to open soon

Whether or not this rumor is true is of little consequence. I'm certain that Nintendo and Electronic Arts are far closer, from a partnership standpoint, than they have been since Wii U launch for the sole fact that Nintendo of America hired an ex-EA executive as their VP of Sales. I imaging that Mr. Bowser has plenty of key relationships to help drive better alignment and cross-promotions.

Yesss Nintendo. Get those third parties. With every one you show the glory of NX another nail in the coffin for the competition.

(I'm kidding, kind of!)

If EA's input is anything like it was for the Wii and the beginning of the Wii U then I don't even want to see it come to fruition. I'm still mad about that Mass Effect bullshit and the stupid big head super deformed Maddens that the Wii got. If EA is just going to continually shit on Nintendo fans then I'd rather them not support Nintendo.

If you are a diehard fan then you wouldn't settle for bullshit. I had an Xbox 360 when the Wii U was released. Why would I buy the Wii U and then spend $60 for Mass Effect 3 on Wii U when I can buy the Mass Effect Trilogy for Xbox 360 for the same price? You would think that most diehard Nintendo fans would have missed out on the Mass Effect series which would make more sense to port the trilogy to the console rather than just the last series of the trilogy.

EA really seems to come off as a bit lazy and petulant in this thing. Basically all of EA's failures on the Wii U are their own fault for not putting in the effort. Releasing a product on one system that's blatantly inferior to the versions available on other systems has nothing to do with the platform holder. All the advertising talk really sounds like EA asking Nintendo to do their job for them.

Seriously. Maybe during the N64 / early GameCube days. But sports fans on Nintendo systems are long gone, and it would be a waste for Nintendo to actively try and get them back.
I mean they could but it would require significant investment to win back that audience. It would only make sense if Nintendo was strategically trying to cater to that audience again.
