Nintendo Life Rumor: EA and Nintendo to have meetings in March regarding NX.

EA output is the least interesting software to me with regards to NX

But i realize the significance of restored Western third party support

If EA's input is anything like it was for the Wii and the beginning of the Wii U then I don't even want to see it come to fruition. I'm still mad about that Mass Effect bullshit and the stupid big head super deformed Maddens that the Wii got. If EA is just going to continually shit on Nintendo fans then I'd rather them not support Nintendo.

I honestly think you should look at it the other way around. Nintendo needs EA sports more than EA needs Nintendo imo.

Nintendo's first-party sports games (Ken Griffey MLB, Kobe Bryant NBA) instantly outsold any EA sports games though.

Yep. Also, it's hard for me to picture a world where tons of people are interested in getting an NX and they see Madden and don't also own another system where they're going to be drawn to pick it up on and all their friends are playing it there instead....

Source is bologna.. yes BALAGNA

Tamaki? I thought he had cred. Why are you likening him to lunchmeat?

That's normal ;) They make versions for legacy platforms until literally no one is buying them and do you think the PS3 versions are all that different anymore or the PS2 games they made until a year ago.

I'm not entirely sure if the winky face means upyou're joking or not but the first iterations of those games were outdated compared to the versions released on PS3/360 the same year.

Because MS has spent years building an audience for those games. Nintendo hasn't so yeah, they're going to have to buy themselves out of their current situation in order to convince both consumers and publishers to buy in.

Yeah, as I said they let it get to this point but it's just not a realistically workable situation at this point. Nintendo obviously needs/needed to do more.

Gotta be honest, this reports reads like a badly written rumor.
Not that I don't believe that EA and Nintendo are having meetings, of course.

According to sources within EA, this is actually seen as something of an insult, and the company will be asking Nintendo to consider shipping NX consoles with leading EA Sports titles, such as FIFA and Madden

This part in particular made me laugh.

I'll be happy to be disproved of course, and to see if this actually means anything.

Yeah, that's kind of bizarre. Third-party console bundles pretty much only happen when the franchise sells extremely well on the console, so of course there haven't been any EA Sports games bundled with Nintendo consoles for a long, long time (if ever). It's even more bizarre when you consider that they're most likely talking about the launch window, and non-exclusive third party games bundled with consoles is something which pretty much just doesn't happen at launch.

Personally I'm inclined to think it wasn't origin that caused the breakdown, I reckon it was because Nintendo were allowing used games, we know MS were going to block them before the 180 and rumours back then suggested Sony would too

From recent NPD thread about original Xbone policies:
Yes, but that wasn't what really pushed the issue.

Once the announce hit, it took most people by surprise. Consumers weren't the only ones surprised by the conference and the policies. No real prep was done with retail or 3rd parties (I'm sure some people knew, but it took most people by surprise). What happened next was quite amazing. Flurries of phone calls, meetings, all around how the heck to set up these used game activation codes and policies. Basic questions like who was responsible for getting used game sellers the activation codes their customers would need to activate used games, how would pubs set up the back end support to track all these codes, what costs would be involved and who would pay for things like printing...

And the position of the biggest used games retailer basically was "give us free codes for our customers or we're not buying your products." So then what can you do? If you give the biggest retailer free activation codes for your used products or they don't carry your product then you have to give free activation codes to all used retailers. Problem is, someone had to pay for the codes, which were going to basically cost a reduced royalty fee. Who was going to do that? Were publishers now going to pay $5 to MS every time a customer bought a used game at the world's biggest retailer of used games product? How would those codes be tracked? Would each game now need a SKU specifically for used game activation codes?

The whole idea was cursed from jump street. It was never going to fly. No one thought through the actual implementation of the idea. How it would actually work at store level. I mean, it's shocking that the reveal went out the way it did in that so little homework was done to make sure the whole idea was workable to begin with.

All the preorders and the consumer sentiment? That was just icing.

MS was pretty much alone with their original vision so Nintendo allowing used games had pretty much zero to do with the breakup.

Calling a platform legacy when it had literally just launched at the time is a bit extreme. Wii U only got one Madden and one FIFA, and they were both basically at launch.

I don't blame Nintendo fans for being mad at EA. Lots of folks have burnt pretty badly by them going back to the Gamecube days.

If there's any sort of deal made, it needs to include release date & feature parity with PS4/XB1 and it probably should cover more than one year just to start to build up trust.

Assuming the NX is powerful enough to run the full versions of Frostbite/Ignite, that shouldn't be a hard thing for EA to do (those engines are basically set up for that).

All Nintendo needs to secure is Madden, FIFA, Battlefront, Battlefield and Mass Effect. Did I miss anything else that is truly needed on NX?

Those are the big ones but there's a good number of other games running on Frostbite/Ignite that they might as well bring to NX too. Plants v.s. Zombies: Garden Warfare is the big one that pops out that's a natural fit for Nintendo's current fanbase.

EA I do believe had dev kits since late last year but that was only a rumor. They were talking about NX development interest around the same time the WSJ article was posted.
For what it's worth, the above poster's source finally checked out. Do with that as you will.

EA: "So you gonna use Origin for your network infrastructure?"

Nintendo: "...Uhh, we kinda already announced our network infrastructure"

EA: "....Oh. We'll wait and see before we hedge our bets *stands up and walks away*"

It's gonna be hard for Nintendo to win the sports femographic from Sony or Microsoft. The only advantage I see Nintendo could use to appeal to them are the different form factors of NX we've been speculating about (like being able to play Madden on a portable).

My gut reaction was that EA can go fuck itself.
Then again it's about its Sports line of games which is the better part of EA, if you ask me.
There's quite a large part of the gaming population that is indeed buying EA sports line (because they're really the only one in town at this point, #fuckonami btw).
I don't think bundling FIFA or Madden is that detrimental to Nintendo if Nintendo is willing to do 3rd party bundles.
I mean it's on the level of Assassin Creed, but then again it puts the machine into the hands of people who would buy these games.
And maybe EA would get its hands out of its ass and provide a good support.

Nintendo's first-party sports games (Ken Griffey MLB, Kobe Bryant NBA) instantly outsold any EA sports games though.
That would be a good point if Nintendo kept making these games...

Hm, we had a minimum of overly optimistic posts on what to expect. I'm not sure if this is the result of lowered expectations or just a new effort to post more rationally when it comes to the NX

Calling a platform legacy when it had literally just launched at the time is a bit extreme. Wii U only got one Madden and one FIFA, and they were both basically at launch.

It almost instantly became a legacy platform for third party developers, especially ones like EA sports.

I don't think EA expects the NX to become their #1 platform for sports games. But they want it to at least be a viable platform for them. This would be beneficial to not only EA but also Nintendo.

If Nintendo is serious about getting third party titles back, EA sports games are definitely a good place to start.

Nintendo. Cultivate this relationship. Make it happen. I don't play sports games but I need PVZ GW2 special edition with Nintendo character guest stars.

EA embracing Frostbite for basically everything was the first death of any potential Wii U support. Sales of the Wii U finalized the death. It remains why Nintendo needs to at least play nice with Industry leading engines in their devices. They can play around with power levels but they really need to make sure they can at least get acceptable performance out of the engines the Industry plans to use.

Usually if you're in an abusive relationship the best advice is to get out of it.

These are businesses. No one likes each other. ;)
I honestly believe that without EA sports, a console cannot become a massive succes in Europe.

People underestimate how important games like Fifa are for casual gamers. Nintendo fans don't care about Fifa, but that's not the point.

Diehard Nintendo fans really are Nintendo's worst enemy. I mean the whole fuck EA we don't need them mentality is why Nintendo is in the position they are.

You don't gotta be a diehard Nintendo fan to not care for EA's output. Also don't see why diehards are Nintendo's worst enemy. They can appeal to diehards and the EA audience if they want, or at least they could try.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
I also remember EA had Wii U dev kits...

EA dropped Wii U faster than Jeb Bush dropped his campaign.

Because Nintendo went back on the initial specs given to devs.

I bet other publishers have the same concerns about Nintendo as well. It's not going to be an easy thing to pull off considering all the years they've spent making their hardware appeal to very specific demographics. Demographics that dont stray far from nintendo and a few japanese games. It will take just as long for them to be known as a company capable of creating a platform that can cater to any and all markets.

"You have to do more to cultivate a sports audience on your platform."

"Okay, then how about doing that with EA Sports titles?"

"No, you have to cultivate the audience for sports titles without having our sports titles."

I get that they're asking them to spend on advertising during sporting events, I just found it funny.

Also, the idea that EA is "insulted" that Nintendo won't bundle their software is hilarious. When has EA given them a title worth bundling in the last, say, decade?

Without having our sports titles? But EA shows up on handhelds and consoles and gives nintendo a chance every generation. I think they're merely asking nintendo to avoid making the same "it's all about me" decisions if they want third party software to take off after the launch window.

don't ask me for codes

That's an interesting point actually. If the NX handheld is capable enough and easy to downport, it might be very much viable for EA to release games on it. Despite dedicated handhelds declining due to mobile, I can definitely see an appeal and sales potential of portable FIFA/Madden with actual physical controls.

It might not be just about a "sports demographic" but rather that sports are inherently entertaining to mainstream society. If Nintendo plans on the NX to be desirable by the mainstream (and kids, as Griss mentioned, are big on sports too :p), then it should follow that sports games would be important to offer.

C'mon EA, let's see NBA Jam and NFL Blitz 2017. That would be what fit most in my memories of sports gaming on Nintendo consoles.

Diehard Nintendo fans really are Nintendo's worst enemy. I mean the whole fuck EA we don't need them mentality is why Nintendo is in the position they are.

Nintendo needs to play nicer with the 3rd parties and the 3rd parties playing nice with them will happen . It is all about MONEY and Third Parties want to make more of it. If giving some EA titles a little extra attention means getting serious support its worth it even if the title isn't something you diehard gives a shit about.

Wii U was a fucking disaster from the day they reset the Wii HD development and decided Wii in HD wasn't a gimmick enough and chased the tablet. Regardless how delusional diehards are Nintendo cannot survive multiple Wii Us and have a future. Wii U took a nice chunk out of that precious warchest and more Wii Us will empty it completely.
Some diehard nintendo simply dont give one damn and just buy on another console. Nobody care that much to be stressin if a game comin every year

Nice. Hopefully this is some evidence Nintendo is really pursuing 3rd party relationships this coming generation. Would be great if they could get some real support

Most insiders don't talk much in detail about their sources, I don't think that's a reason to doubt Tamaki. The fact that he's wishy washy is only natural, things can change and sources can be off.

Anyways, good going Trev on the gaf approval. 1st Gaf insider meeting is next month on the 2nd, and you'll be having tea and biscuits at shockingalberto's place.
