I really like the look of the game, it still looks like Shenmue but better, like a modern Dreamcast game.

Yep.
I was afraid they wouldn't be able to retain the same look and go for something more realistic, but these shots and vids are the perfect evolution of the classic Shenmue aesthetics.

In my heart i had settled for a game that continued the story of Shenmue, i backed the kickstarter but tbh i didn't have great expectations. From what we have seen so far though, this isn't just 'a Shenmue game after 2', this is the Shenmue 3 people have been dreaming of.

Yu spoke quite passionately about how important the look and feel of Shenmue is to the experience, and I'd doubt he'd settle for less than a proper evolution of the series. It's nice to see the team showing results this early though, and they've probably only been working on it since September-October time.

We haven't hit the money tier for that :/
We'll get AI that will throw the odd punch or kick....ha
What? No, you're incorrect here.

The AI Battling System has been described by Yu Suzuki as:

"It’s a system that will make the character respond intelligently to the commands given by the player during battle. With simple commands you’ll be able to execute complex techniques."

At this point Suzuki-san showcased how it’ll work visually, showing that if the player and the enemy are not correctly aligned, pressing the punch button without the system would cause the player to hit the air, punching straight in front of him. With this intelligent system, the character will perform steps to dynamically align with the enemy, coming at them with a hook motion.

Another example shown by Suzuki-san involved a situation with a wall close to the character and the enemy, with the character jumping on the wall and then punching the enemy in mid-air in a movie-like attack.

It has nothing to do with actual enemy combat AI.

Yeah, but devs say many things and Suzuki had been out of the loop for a while.
Not that i had doubted the game was being made out of passion and not business, but like i said, I had settled for any game titled Shenmue 3.
But this is shaping up to be THE Shenmue 3 and i'll probably go drop some more money on it right now :p

Of all the things to be worried about, this man's ability to make a fantastic game shouldn't be one of them.

No that doesn't, but the increased strategy would come with an improved enemy AI that fights harder and more intelligently. So from that point of view it's probably going to be more limited unless we can hit the next tier.

Thank you for this, OP.

After 14 years of waiting I still can't grasp that I'll be playing Shenmue III in about two years (I'm almost counting on a delay). It still hasn't sunk in. To see environments from the game with that music gives me goosebumps.

It's really happening.

Shenmue has meant a lot to me. It made me interested in China where I later met my wife. We're planning a trip to Guilin in June. Still haven't been there.

I wouldn't say he's out of the loop. People think Yu vanished without a trace from 2001 onwards, but he was still leading AM2 until almost the end of the decade and still regularly attended trade shows and developer events like GDC. It's important to note he also accurately predicted that the new consoles would use PC-like architecture and made the same smart decision that a lot of huge Japanese game devs are making in regards to using UE4 for fast, efficient development. He's got his finger on the pulse of the industry more than people think.

But yeah, the more real Shenmue III gets, the more I feel justified in pledging so much money! I'll probably pledge again too when the PC version hits the PayPal or Kickstarter upgrades start happening.

You might want to re-read the quote I cited. The AI Battling System relates to the PLAYER, not the enemy AI.

I honestly always thought he's the best but you know, I was afraid he might have lost it.
Despite being the most exciting thing in recent history, the early material and kickstarter wasn't too encouraging honestly, and the budget is not ideal.
But man. This is so great.

Those screenshots recall to me the first two games, in both art direction and ambiance, and that's what's most important I think, that Shenmue 3 feels like the Shenmue of yore. I'm pretty happy with how this is turning out; it all feels like it's coming together now.

I hope Shenmue is somehow represented at E3 this year. It seems way too early to showcase anything of 3 on stage, so I'd love to see a HD Collection announcement!

Yeah, I wouldn't expect anything at E3 with regards to S3.

Sega will have no better opportunity to cash in on those early games than as part of the build up to the third's release. That being said, they may feel the best time to do this would be closer to release as the hype starts to ramp. It'd be nice to get some kind of confirmation though.

As long as the PayPal is open, the sky is the limit. I wouldn't discount us reaching $7 million eventually.

It would be an awesome thing to have, I can't see them closing it tbh, it's not like getting more money is a bad thing when it comes to game development, whenever they receive it.

Here is a transcript of the conference: http://www.gameblog.fr/news/57097-conference-shenmue-3-graphismes-combats-visages-des-personna

It's in French but you'll probably be able to get the gist of it using Google Translation.
Not sure if Google translate is being screwy, but Yu says we'll see the new Ryo and Shenhua models "soon". I'm wondering if we're not quite done with Shenmue III news today. Cedric implied Shenmue fans might want to catch the "Shibuya Productions Crazy Time" at 4:45PM CET.

I just hope Yu took the info about implementing VR for the PC version onboard, so someone can easily mod it. That would be so awesome.

This makes me glad that actually Shenmue 3 didn't come to Dreamcast. I love Shenmue (I even have the 'What's Shenmue' DC Disc), but to have the game look like this, makes the wait worth while.

I paid $60 for the physical game on PS4 via the kickstarter and I am far more hyped for this than any other release for the System (that included Uncharted 4, ect).

It looks better than I could have even imagined. And I really understand now what YS was talking about when he mentioned getting the feel and the colors right and UE4 - boy did he! Also, the translations on the new fighting engine sound far too ambitious for such a project but because it's YS I wouldn't doubt his team's ability to get it done. Wow!
