14 Years of progress in one easy image. I love Shenmue.

Video and comparison images added to the OP.

I think the Shenmue II images are from the Xbox version, judging from the excess bloom, but it's pretty amazing how they've started capturing the feel of Shenmue already.

Yu was quoted as saying they started working properly on UE4 only six months ago, that's really impressive progress!

Damn it looks good. Can't wait to hear that beautiful music again. It's still crazy we're gonna finally play this again.

Shenmue Dojo user Esppiral posted these awesome comparisons:

I'm so happy that the game is starting to look like the natural evolution of the series.
Comparisons are beautiful. So good.

God I can't wait to see ryo and shenhua walking through this and eventually playing it.

Still almost 2 years til release date... Amazing.

Fuck I'm so happy!!!

Something about it looks quite strange. cotton candy tree and like they used large rocks that they sort of forged together to make mountains and other things. A huge fan of the series but I dont have a lot of hope for the art style and look of the game. Not sure if that will be changing.

Then it ends up feeling and looking like fable a bit, and that isnt the art style Id expect this or any sega 3d game to be going in mostly. Really wish it had the typical sega look in textures and feel like Yakuza actually gets. Oh well on that though.

Hope the game will be designed well on levels. Still picking it up regardless of the visuals.

Look great, but I mostly want to see npc interaction and player motion, I also wonder how they're going to manage the camera ingame, I can't understand how nobody asked about it.

To me the screenshots look pretty, but did you watch the video? The video looks extremely impressive. Like graphically one of the nicest looking games this gen impressive.

Opinions may vary on Bailu, but they've got Shenhua's house down almost perfectly as a faithful update of what we saw in II.

I agree with this. I love the "peacefully saturated" look of this game for now. The Unreal shaders seems to really fit with the atmosphere.
Do you think these video extracts will be delivered at full definition on Internet soon ?

Nah. Usually the images off the Kickstarter page/Shenmue III website are the best we get.

I wouldn't say he's out of the loop. People think Yu vanished without a trace from 2001 onwards, but he was still leading AM2 until almost the end of the decade and still regularly attended trade shows and developer events like GDC. It's important to note he also accurately predicted that the new consoles would use PC-like architecture and made the same smart decision that a lot of huge Japanese game devs are making in regards to using UE4 for fast, efficient development. He's got his finger on the pulse of the industry more than people think.

Interesting points. Really goes to show that he knows what he's doing, and how to do it well.

The whole production seems to be moving smoothly. The thing is, he is used to managing high profile development, so it makes sense.

Looking forward to the inevitable trailer some time this year.

Never got the hype for Shen Mue.

Played the game for Dreamcast back in the days. I don't remember it being something out of this world.

Oh man. I didn't even think of this. I'm going to be extra careful crossing the road from now on, I swear.

This is all I think about whenever I start looking forward to something.

It's been really bad the last few years with Shenmue III, Cyberpunk 2077, new Star Wars trilogy, Twin Peaks Season 3 and the emergence of VR.

These are all things I've longed to see and it's causing me legit anxiety problems thinking I'm going to die from random cancer or something before I get to experience them.
