PlayStation TV (Vita TV) officially discontinued in Japan

Sony's support was beyond pathetic. They've never kept the list of compatible games updated on their website, and some of the whitelist restrictions were just dumb.

Absolutely incredible.

Vita TV felt in many ways like the Vita itself to me. A decent piece of hardware completely screwed up by Sony not being confident enough to get behind it and make a push.

I can't blame them. Handheld consoles just aren't viable in today's market where quick-bite mobile games and slightly larger experiences fill the niche of people that want to play games when they're travelling, while looking more socially acceptable to boot.

And I just got one last week to finally play P4G, the Danganronpa games and the Corpse Party games.

I suppose this might mean future vita titles won't be compatible since TV is discontinued? Gundam Extreme Vs Force will be the last new game I get for it then.

Its why I think their vr will flop, they just let things die if its not successful right out the gate like move, psvita, pv tv, ps now.

Yeah, it's pretty much Sony's MO.
If they don't score big as soon as the device releases, that piece of hardware is damned.

No surprise, it was already on sale here for some time. Got one for 30€ a few weeks ago. The only thing I plan on doing with it is play Phantasy Star Nova on my TV. Well worth it imo.

Sony half-assed this. They released a small, set top like box that could compete with something like the Apple TV & Roku, yet it doesn't even have Netflix. Good job making the DualShock 4 work with it, but what's the point of being able to party up with others if I can't voice chat with them? Too many incompatible games, especially the Crash & Spryo games being the weirdest omissions. I have quite a few friends who didn't buy a PS3 last generation, but would have purchased a PSTV if they could play Crash Bandicoot over again. And memory cards are still too expensive.

Not sure about that. They have alot more riding on VR and it's been in the planning stages for much longer than the products you've mentioned. However if it flops in the gaming industry I still see them able to utilize the technologies for other industries.

Sony does not own Netflix.

Except that Netflix DOES own an application for the system. Sony's fault for not getting them to make a regional.

The lack of 1080p for the Ui/ Netflix me ditch mine immediately.

The fact that 80% of the library was unplayable because of Sony's forced front/back-touch and motion control gimmicks didn't?

Maybe Netflix was just lazy and didn't want to submit an european version.

Sony is known for annoying QA processes for sure, seems like every week european version of some indie game gets cancelled or delayed too.

I'm not surprised. As others have said, Sony release peripherals and then refuse to support them. I fully expect them to do the same with VR.

I was considering buying a PS TV earlier this week to play Persona 4 Golden and Digimon Cyber Sleuth. Hopefully this news will bring it down in price, but it could also raise it.

Sony never goes all out with their portable stuff. They always release it and forget about it the next week. Wish they would put the same effort as their consoles.

A reactionary, backwards-thinking product (as in, reacting to the failure of Vita as a handheld), poorly disguised as a progressive, forward-thinking one. I'm still surprised so many people fell for it and predicted success when it was first announced.

Why? I own a Vita and even I can't see that being a bad thing. It's a dead platform.

It has no games and the only games it has are multiplatform, indies or weird japanese games. Why would anyone want that?

To be clear I don't really care if it comes to the PS4 or not I just feel like all those people don't give a shit about those games and are just port begging for the sake of it. There's several cheap alternative to play those games but they'll always found an excuse to not put their money where their mouth is. Does anyone remember Tearaway? It bombed so hard I'm not even sure that it has sold that much more over the Vita version. GR won't be selling well either too.

A great device held back by its numerous incompatible software titles.

I bought one for cheap and then returned it when I realized I couldn't play most of what I purchased.

They had a chance to improve the hardware so that on a big screen it would look great but they didn't. Some Vita games already ran under the system maximum resolution and were full of jaggies on a small screen. Upscaled on a big screen it wasn't too hot.

They were really lazy too with the storage solution. The fact it still uses those expensive cards instead of some cheap internal memory is puzzling.

Then came the authorization for which Vita game would be allowed to run on it. It seems they didn't even bother to test most titles and the whitelist for vita games is missing tons of games unless you use CFW.

I'm more surprised at the PSTV tanking in Japan. I mean it was expected for it to crash and burn in the west because the no one cares about the Vita there but in Japan the Vita still sells somewhat decent numbers.

I've been saying it in a few Sony threads but most Sony add ons just get supported poorly. Move controllers, network adapter and hard drive for ps2.

This was a really elegant machine that got no traction because the messaging wasn't clear.

I always considered getting one but it felt like a gimped vita with no real advantages.

It was cool with some real drawbacks. Max of 1080i, very few games, no dev-friendly app store, expensive memory..basically regular Vita but worse.

I wonder if psvr is going to be the same half-assed stuff that tradotional Sony usually pumps out or if it is going to be outside designed like ps4.

Sony designed a great little system, but their post-launch support was truly lacking. They neglected to address several of its glaring issues, which could have elevated it to a higher level. In particular, there are many notable games and video apps which are still incompatible without resorting to "unauthorized" techniques.

I still adore the machine and would recommend it to enthusiasts who understand and recognize what it can do, but it's a shame that so much of its potential will likely remain untapped.

Japan wasn't the market for this thing. They actually buy handhelds there.

I got one a few weeks ago from a user here and really enjoy it, been remote playing my ps4 with it and it works great...has a lot of potential, let's hope someone can unlock it now that it's "dead"
