The Surge [Deck13, PS4/XBO/PC, early 2017] - Previews & Screenshots

A lot more on the setup, story, etc here: http://www.pcgamesn.com/the-surge/dont-call-the-surge-sci-fi-dark-souls

Sounds pretty neat so far. I'm interested.
Deck 13 have probably heard the name Dark Souls a lot. The studio’s last game, Lords of the Fallen, was frequently described in shorthand as “a bit like Dark Souls,” and now their new sci-fi RPG, The Surge, well… it’s also a bit like Dark Souls. At least at a glance.

A scrap in The Surge is a dance fraught with danger. Even the basic enemies, grunts encased in intimidating exoskeletons, can spell death for players who lack caution. Fights, then, are thoughtful things, with lots of standing back and judging the situation before diving in for a few well-timed strikes and then rolling away, out of the path of a devastating retaliation.

"The special thing we have in our combat is you can, in real-time, target the body part that you want to hit,” explains Klose. “We want to give you more control over what you are doing. So we use this in a variety of ways. You can attack the limbs of your enemy that are not armoured, so this gives you an advantage by making the fight easier for you. If you target the right body part, you have more impact, then you can defeat the enemy faster.”

Essentially, combat is about finding weak spots and exploiting them. But that’s only if you want to get the fight over with, quickly. There’s another option in situations where you might notice that your foe is wearing some nifty looking combat is about finding weak spots and exploiting them. But that’s only if you want to get the fight over with, quickly. There’s another option in situations where you might notice that your foe is wearing some nifty looking mechanical gear. Targeting the gear that you want is trickier, and might make the fight go on for longer, but the payoff is lovely junk that you can fit onto your own frame or scan for blueprints, potentially making future battles easier.

Gear is more than weapons and armour, though. Implants can be discovered and crammed inside your body, with game-changing effects. While some implants offer more conventional bonuses, like health regeneration, others change the HUD, revealing enemy health bars and weak spots, lowering the difficulty a bit if you’re finding the fights too tricky or simply want more information.

Sci-fi souls? Count me in. Currently playing Lords of the Fallen and loving it. Really great game even with its flaws.

Edit: Just read the title "Don't call The Surge sci-fi Dark Souls", heh, can't help it.

Deck13 strikes again. Their history is less than stellar.

Great art direction, crap games. Still, I will remain skeptical with this new IP until I get to play it.

Am I the only one that think this looks like a UE3 game? Not saying it looks bad, but the way the visuals are coming together so far really give me that vibe.

Regardless, I love the premise. Hopefully the team will be able to properly execute on it this go around. At least Lords of the Fallen was a pretty game on PC lol.

They made their own internal engine.

It doesn't appear to have physically based rendering (even in the marketing shot, the robot's metal doesn't look like metal), so it gives it that last-gen look that you would most likely associate with something like Unreal Engine 3.

Am thinking all that hardware on him, should weigh a ton.

It's an exoskeleton. It's powered, with hydraulics or w/e. It's electric.

That's like saying "Look at the guy moving along in that car! The car's so big - should weigh a ton."

It's also in early pre-alpha state.

From what I read, The Surge is shaping up to be a pretty interesting game, I am loving it, also the screens are kinda selling me the game already, there should have been some gameplay videos though.

One interesting part is that at the end of the demo shown, the big robotic spider had all of its legs cut down, and turned into a flying robot, I wonder how if there will be aerial combat in the game.

The combat looks boring and they shouldn't use that overused slow motion effect. Even the soundeffect is recognisable.

This'll be just another generic action game that will keep others from trying to make something actually interesting in a sci-fi setting.

Well.... I know it is very early Alpha but... not impressed at all I'm afraid.

For a start I don't like the exoskeleton thing which looks like a mountain of iron shit on top of the character model and *sight*... damn, I'm sorry but it looks terrible esthetic wise. Plus there's only some kind of cyborgs and robots as enemies there which is boring as hell (hello Enslaved), plus no gore whatsoever (but you can cut enemies in half), very basic and clunky combat system, generic enviroments and shitty art work.

Overall, doesn't look good to me at this stage of development and why they even showed the game to us so early?

P.S. Prey 2 stuff looked a lot better that this back in the day.

I think Lords of the Fallen gets a liitle less credit than it deserves. While not on a Souls or Bloodborne level it's still a game I enjoyed a lot. I would much rather see them expand on the foundation of Lords instead of moving on to this. Hope it doesn't mean Lords two has been canceled or put on back burner. Last I saw it was still in development and hope that's still the case. That said this seems like it could be promising but it'll have to do a lot better then that video. It's definitely something I'll be keeping my eye on with hopes it turns out well.

This is where I'm hoping FROM go next with the Souls series, but this will do nicely in the meantime

LoTF isn't really that bad, anyone with an X1 should definitely check it out when it hits GwG.

Different devs making Lords Of The Fallen 2 now.
The originals publisher is making the sequel.

This is a bit like Techland moving onto Dying Light after Dead Island.

The same folks said don't call Lords of the Fallen "like Dark Souls" so.... I'm not sure why they keep wanting to distance themselves from that.

Digging this now way more than LOTF. More props to them if it's their own in-house engine.

The design in itself speaks volumes. Took the best out of Souls and Bloodborne. Would be glad if the areas are connected meaningful metroidvania'ish. From a pure mechanical standpoint (no pun intended) this looks a LOT more polished than LOTF ever was, attack animations not being clunky, AI reaction, hitbox registry etc.

Only thing that's a turn off would be the slow-mo finishers. Looking forward for more.
