Shush. No one must know my terrible secret.

Awesome! It should be coming West in early 2017.

I haven't even started my copy of Etrian Odyssey Untold II, and I don't know when I will. I'm overwhelmed by all of the 3DS games!

Proper scans are out now, and translations are starting to trickle out, as well.

  1. The biggest design conceit was the concept of story, to contrast from III's focus on seafaring and IV's focus on taking to the skies
  2. There were three main focuses in making the game: offering an unprecedented degree of character customization, designing dungeon crawling that can sate the adventurer's spirit, and encouraging discovery interspersed with hard battles.
  3. Classes were designed by drafting the races first, then brainstorming classes that could fit them afterwards.
  4. And, as previously stated, anyone not fond of voice over can elect to have every single character and class muted.

This translation is dead wrong. The thing that has a focus on story are the retold games. This one is not trying to push on story or some "new angle" like the more recent games, but instead on focusing on and refining the core aspects that have caused fans to love the series, which he enumerates as the following point: character customization, deep and complex dungeon crawling, and difficult battles which challenge the player to grow and feel accomplished.

I'm not even sure where whoever wrote that got the idea that 5 would focus on the story. I looked at the scans and didn't see anything saying something like that.

I've seen the point reiterated across two separate translations, so I don't know how that would happen from different sources. What I should've written was "personal stories" in my summary, though. Not a rigid plot structure, but something unfolding that's uniquely personalized to the player and their choices/party composition. Maybe "role-playing" would be even better?

I've also read the following on top of that:
  1. With the Hound class, you'll be able to choose to have falcon and dog companions and will be able to name them. Even the developers encourage coming up with names now if you constantly struggle at this creation step.
  2. The developers are basically going back to their roots to some degree, reevaluating and refining what I's specific appeals were.
  3. Streetpass is still in.
  4. The developers consider the individual events that have littered previous dungeons in the series to be integral to Etrian's core, whether that's being ambushed by poison enemies or having your threads stolen by squirrels. They're hoping to expand upon this aspect, to the point where it's more comparable to those of tabletop RPGs. Players will be able to make decisions as one party member and see how it directly affects the others. As there events are still valuable to the characters, EXP will be awarded afterwards for a lot of them.
  5. The number of available map icons has been increased in response to the wider breadth of event types.
  6. The game is currently playable from beginning to end, and is now being polished. The world map, music, monster designs, and class designs are fully complete.
  7. Himukai tried being more open-minded with what classes can exist in the game while still being congruent with the games' overall spirit. He worked as if this would be the final 3DS game, and tried to do his very best to leave things on a high note (not have any regrets afterwards).
  8. Every single monster in the game has a brand-new design
  9. For the first time in the series, the game will have a full orchestral soundtrack recorded live (I'm guessing, as in, recorded together live).

Live recorded soundtrack, new enemy designs, better events, Himukai mention? This is the pinnacle of announcements. :p

Etrian Odyssey without the mapping would be just like all the other dozens of first person RPGs. The series is really nothing special without the mapping.

I beg to differ, I like Etrian Odyssey because of the gameplay.
- skill tree
- class
- subclass

Those features above are rare those days, I usualy saw them in mmorpgs now more than in j-rpgs or w-rpgs. Also Etrian Odyssey tend to improuve it's core gameplay instead of trying to found new revolutionary system in each new tittle.

Etrian Odyssey for me is the game that keep the roots of rpg that I love and miss.

I can't think of a single first person dungeon crawler RPG on 3DS, Vita, PS3, PS4, 360, XB1, or PC which does not have classes and skill trees. It's part and parcel f the genre. How are they rare? Mapping is what makes EO unique among dungeon crawlers.

I saw another translation saying that the section mentioning the removal of subclasses and grimoires also mentions a new system that isn't ready to be revealed yet. No clue if that's true.

I wonder if it'll come up in the JP direct tomorrow.
They need to market it to the most people possible, so I don't see them skipping something with such high visibility. I see us getting a trailer in the Direct, and they'll probably replay it and have a live playthrough on Saturday.

Not like this should be a surprise because of Atlus' 3DS output since I think SMT4 and the last 3 (EO1U, 2U, PQ)? But EOV seems to have DLC.
Eh this might be the first Atlus game I might buy the DLC for.

They did reveal a lot of information just in time for the Nintendo Direct. I mean, it might appear in the JP one at least.

Sorry if that sounded inflammatory. I know you're just reporting translations you found. I don't know how both of them got it wrong though.

If I had to guess, it's probably because they were both using translation software and/or didn't know that "New Labyrinth of the World Tree" is actually what the Japanese versions of the "Untold" games are titled as and assumed that it was referring to the upcoming new game. Because that's what's referred to in regards to the focus on story. That particular bit has the question of "What's the concept which this game is based on?" To which he responds by saying that while 3, 4, and the Untold games had the "concept" of ocean, sky, and story as their respective focuses, this one is simply going to double down on the key points that brought the series its acclaim.

I don't see any other mistakes in the translations you found.

That is good to hear, interesting that two translations apparently got it wrong.

Classes? All of them I can think of.

Skill trees? A bunch don't use them. Demon Gaze for one. You level up your stats instead and gain moves on level up.

The elves being named Lunarians makes me think that the moon will be a big part of the story.

thanks /eog/ said:
Fencer - damage dealer with a focus on avoiding
Dragoon - tank
Cestus - melee attacks and binds
Reaper - debuffs and statuses
Necromancer - some of everything
Hound - bow wildling
Masurao - FOUR SWORDS
Shaman - buffs
Herbalist - healing

Edit: You can choose any voice regardless of gender. Hilarity ensues.

Honestly, I'm glad of this. Let people pick whatever voices they want. I'd certainly welcome that freedom.
I've used male portraits for characters I chose to think of as female throughout the series because I liked them better so being able to select voices separately from that choice would be a good thing for me (I used Prince and Dancer, but I can think of several others that would easily apply)
Other games have done it too. The first that come to mind are other dungeon crawlers - Demon Gaze had the option for all characters including the MC (It did warn that the game would treat them as male no matter what but I still gave them a female portrait/voice anyway), and Operation Abyss let you choose gender and voice entirely separately from character portrait as well.

Im stoked for such a robust colorization system. Even to the point of Dichromatic Eyes! Crazy.

I do hope it's Man/Woman/Boy/Girl for all class portraits instead of Man/Girl/Boy/Girl as is become his thing lately.

I'm sorry...but it's not the same Etrian Odyssey without FM. =\

I understand the logic behind the 3d -> real instruments deal. But man. This is still the best battle music we're ever gonna hear from EO.

FM is shit, man

none of the FM versions in EOU and 2U were better than the orchestrated version. 99.9% of the reason I'm looking forward to 3U is so we get a proper soundtrack out of it

bruuuuuuuuhhhh

I wish the music switch option was somewhere on the touch screen in Untold 2. I really like them both I just tend to stick with orchestral. Never played the original, so it's neat being able to have two "new" recordings of every song. Would have been cooler had it not been buried in the start menu.

You're nuts if you think either version is bad. :p
