Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight |OT| Turning Over a New Leaf

Anyone know how to actually get 1 & 2 to run? Extracted everything and ran exe. file but crashes and says I'm missing some music file.

Just downloaded and started both up. Had no problems on Windows 10 64-bit. Maybe just redownload or reinstall them? Also, you might want to go into the momo.config file for both games and set screen size to 4. For 1920x1080 that should mostly fill the screen.

And now that I've played a short bit of both of those the Cave Story comparison, at least graphically, is very strong in the first game. And the step from the first game to the second seems pretty crazy.

No idea where to go now. Got the
Air Dash
and the
Bow upgrade
so far but no idea where to utilize them to progress.

Oh what the heck, I have some excess money in the wallet. Who knows, this might be one of those games where I feel compelled to play. I'm mostly just worried about the underwater sections.

Just so you know, you can pull off all the same techniques underwater (example: dodge rolling) and there is no air meter, you also get unlimited jumping which helps to avoid some hazards. :p

Bought it last night, full on white screen at start up. Sounds like the game's working in the background, can here music and menu sound effects, but no image. Any ideas?

Aw come on I was under the impression that going into water means death since I seemingly drowned or something the first time I went underwater.

In certain places, the water is just a death pit, in some places (namely one area with a ladder leading down) you can go through water just fine, also if you accidentally go into an endless pit of water where you didn't want to, you can always just keep pressing the jump button to get out of it.

yeah, that's one weird thing. there are instant water death spots and places you can swim. there's also one where you can swim but if you go to the bottom to another screen, you die.

but save points are plentiful so it's no biggie.

I just realized other active items refill at the bells. I just assumed it was the bellflowers and the active item you can purchase early on would be a consumable. Well, maybe that one still is and it's just the second active item I got refills like the bellflowers. I'm assuming it's consistent with all active items, though.

Just got through the second boss and she was a little tougher than the first boss. Rolling made it easy, though, so once you see the attacks and die it makes the next attempt go smoothly.

With how quick things go after a death I think hard mode was the right way to go because it feels rewarding and normal would possibly feel too easy. I can still only take a single hit without dying from pretty much everything and I'm up to five bellflowers so that helps me last a bit longer. Getting hit by bosses continues to be an instant death.

I'm starting to feel that tug when I step away I just want to go back immediately and see what's next. I think my comfort towards the combat has sunk in and now I feel good zipping through things.

aside from a certain busty boss (which is kinda hilarious), i didn't get any real heavy moe/anime vibes in the game itself. The style is present but it's not like Touhouvania or something.

Im mostly joking since it seems a lot of people tend to call the game moe in terms of style. The game has a beautiful art direction and quite unique if you ask me.(Also thankful that the fan service is minimal.) I wanna see how much more can be done as the games just keep getting better with each entry.

Wow, part 4 is a big jump from 3. It's an interesting Dark Souls/SOTN mashup now. I like it a lot so far.

The dev is improving massively each game. I'd love to see something with a larger scope now.

Oh yeah, they were looking for suggestions: I'd love a way to bring up the castle map with a single button press.

And another suggestion: There's a typo in the dialogue with the witch surrounded by cats (I want to say the name is Cotillard or something like that). In one sentence it uses the word been twice incorrectly looking like "been ____ been". I can't recall the word that splits them.

After gaining my first new ability I'm looking forward to seeing what else I get. From seeing stuff in the world I'm assuming one that shrinks you down and a double jump? Good stuff.

Edit: Is it intentional that you can get poisoned by your own poison gas clouds left by arrows? It happens on occasion so I would assume that's intended but just noting in case not and something triggers it on those occasions where it happens to me.

Possibly a corrupt download? Works fine for me. Win7, extracted using winrar. 10.5mb, 12.5 when extracted.

If you (or anyone else, really) could take a screenshot of this exact piece of dialogue, it would be super helpful. We can fix it and roll it into the next update.

I think i got the bad end.
she dies at the end. Is it because i didnt put cath out of her misery? I eeny meeny miney moe'd it.

Awesome game. I love the challenge most of the way through (played on hard.) Gets a little free once you get the fire spell but thats only for the last 10%ish of the game. The previous 90% involved a ton of dying. None of it for bullshit reasons, all of it for execution mistakes on my part, as it should be. Exploration went smoothly, though i hope 5 can be a much bigger game with more little details and things to discover.

Yup, that was a real good game. Really abrupt on that bad ending though. Probably should've played on hard in retrospect

Just finished it and my map at 97% Now on new game plus trying to find whatever Im missing. That was a good one and I think I may have also gotten the bad ending.
Is it because of not killing Cath or not freeing that other character or no 100% map?

To get the good ending, you need to
upgrade your feather. Get the wind magic from the castle and use it on the little windmill mechanism in the city to open the little cat passage under it.

Damnit. I got the bad ending and I don't know why.

I put cath out of her misery

I got the bad ending at 98% map completion. I reloaded and went exploring to get the 100%, changed a few items thinking they may be related to the true ending, and upon beating the boss again I got the true ending.

True Ending requirement:
You need to upgrade your leaf and then beat the boss. You do so a bit to the left of the Forlorn Monastery check point where there's that area the cat enters below a little tower building you can inspect and it'll show an icon of a box. Turns out that's the wind magic active item so just use that standing in the spot to open the path to upgrade the leaf.

Great game. I got most everything and all done on Hard Mode. A little tempted to start up Insane just to spot how different it is. I'm curious if there's a change in enemy spawns or if it's the usual take more damage (must be near instant death from everything if so) and everything takes more hits to kill.

I'd love to know my stats on how I killed enemies. I bet at least 3/4 of all enemies died by the bow for me.

Ivan, was the hardest boss for you on Hard
Lunabella or whatever, the second time you fight her?
. I bet I died around twenty times on that boss which was great because that's when people started watching my broadcast so I'm sure that was fun for them to see me die repeatedly.

Oh, and a very minor bug but it's at the very end so spoiler:
In the developer's room if you turn into the cat and go into the cat path below the two cats you can talk to the word "talk" flashes above them when you're directly below them and you can talk to them from beneath them. I don't figure that's expected behavior.

I imagine some other thoughts will come back to mind for suggestions and such but for now I just want to say it was a great time. Oh, and I wasn't listed in the Patreon supporter. Don't know if there was some requirement and I'm not bothered since I usually don't submit the forms on Kickstarters to get added as a supporter on those projects either, but it's simply something I noticed. Oh well!

Edit: Oh you Tunahead.

If you're playing on Steam the achievement should pop for the true ending if you got it. And if you get the bad ending the game is fairly blatant in telling you that you got the bad ending with the dialogue. But yeah, it's quite possible to meet the requirements without knowing you will be prior to going into the fight.

Skimming Steam reviews I see people complaining about the instant kill spikes. Either I'm simply more comfortable platforming than most or people just got worse at platforming because I rarely died to the spikes. I can think of one time I died due to spikes and it was because I rolled when I meant to do something else so it was my own clumsy button hit.

I really wish there was something late game that would unlock a third passive slot. Even if it was something like 100% map completion though sooner would be preferable. Because I wouldn't mind searching for the remaining ivory bugs but I get through combat quickest with two slots for damage related options instead of needing to give one up for the ring that makes the tone near secrets.

Then I didnt get the True Ending unless that glitched out.
I did upgrade the leaf tho.

The instant kill spikes I think there are no issues and they are all easily avoidable unless an enemy messes you up.

Well based on my experience in Momodora III, I'd think you need to
mercy kill Cath
in order to get the true ending. ;)
Guess not though. :p

Finished the game and managed to get 6/9 achievements.

Game was pretty good, took me more than 8 hours to complete my first play-through since I spent time filling the whole map, look for all the ivory bugs, raise money to buy all the items and get my ass handed to me by bosses just because.

I really loved the idle animations in this game. The yawning, the tipping shoes, the sleeping cat. I found all of them to add a lot of charm to Kaho and, in a way, a bit of personality (since she's a silent protagonist).

I'm not sure I'll try and go for the 3 achievements I'm missing but the game was worth every $ I paid on the playism site.

Glad you enjoyed it! The animation was a lot of reason I fell in love with the game originally. I've been wanting to work with rdein and Momodora for a very long time, and seeing the quality of Momodora RUtM blew me away. Really glad we got to work on it. ^_^

I wrote a review for the game, not sure if GAF is cool with people posting their own external stuff so I won't unless it's okay.

This game has me thinking about (Momodora III spoilers)
Kaho's appearance in Momodora III, I guess we can safely assume that the events of this game take place some time after the Haegok fight
.

Nope. I beat it last night. I didn't do what's in your spoiler tags and got the true ending, though I don't know why.

GREAT game, loved every second of it. Go buy this, people!

I'm playing III now. I'm finding it harder.

The pixel art in this game is pretty nice. In a way it makes it more similar to a Castlevania than a lot of other indie metroidvania games.

Oh man! I had forgotten to check in here after the release! Seems like everyone is really liking it and I'm glad to see that the Steam reviews are super positive too. Thanks so much to all you guys for your support. I'll be sure to pass the sentiments on to rdein =)

About the poison arrows,
yeah it's intentional that you can poison yourself with them
. I use that pretty often with the item that lets
your arrows penetrate enemies
. Plays very differently from dodge rolling and hitting with the leaf.

I beat this game on its true ending last night (bad ending the night before). I did enjoy it a lot, and it feels very nice to play, with some absolutely gorgeous pixel art and animation and fun level design.

The game has some design flaws in my opinion, though. It's very heavily inspired by Dark Souls, yes, but I think the game needed to put players in more difficult positions to fully utilize their combat skills and experiences. The stage designs are varied and prove to be a fun challenge, but I think where this falls flat are the regular enemy encounters - at the start they're hopping, dodging, blocking and even targeting your position, and you have some with super armour on that can withstand more of your attacks and crush you. Later in the game, though, they get much easier, with less aggressive attack patterns, weaker attacks and no real incentive to fight a lot of them (given that you can jump, a thing that doesn't exist in the Souls series, you have much less reason to confront, dodge or roll out of the way when it comes to enemies as you can just avoid them completely, and unlike Souls not many of them - if any at all - bother chasing you) and it's really easy to lock them in hitstun until they're dead, or worse yet one-shot them with your bow. I don't think it's awful gameplay at all, but considering the game's obvious inspiration and potential to improve on it (movement and combat is much faster than Souls so it could be even more intense) it seems like a really missed opportunity to exploit it. Thankfully, though, bosses are much better, and this is where the Souls formula really shines - knowing when to attack and avoid, not being greedy and reading their movement, these encounters are the game's highlights. Unfortunately, though, the difficulty of the bosses is inconsistent - early bosses like
Heretical Arsonist
and
Pardoner Fennel
proved to be very challenging in a satisfying way, and later in the game the
Duquess Lupiar
encounter is pretty tough too. Everyone else was a fair amount easier, and the final boss was an absolute joke.

Maybe the higher difficulties will alleviate this? If it's just dealing higher damage then I doubt I'll bother, but I did enjoy the game enough and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a Metroid-like experience to kill some time.

Hard mode alleviates a lot of this and you get one or two shotted for a significant portion of the game, making a lot of the scenes take planning and multiple tries. Agreed that boss difficulty is a little inconsistent, but I appreciated that it's an honest "recognize the pattern" set up, rather than something incredibly cheap. I feel like they held back on some of the bosses--like the last boss has a huge move set, but all really easy to deal with. The last 10% of the game gets fairly free after the fire upgrade. I'll have to try insane mode.

I do hope they have ideas to make a highly expanded sequel. It has probably my favorite combat in a Metroidvania. I've always wanted a fairly relentless one. Not like Boshy style, but one that's puts a good move set to use.

That was my passive build for a good majority of the game. And related to your reply on poison arrows:
I did use it to my advantage by poisoning myself next to a wall and equipping the item that heals while poisoned. Had to do this a couple times when health got real low, was out of bellflowers, and been awhile since I saved
.

And agreed that hard mode makes enemies feel more dangerous and not as easily skipped because you don't want to accidentally take damage while trying to get by. I generally found it safer to simply kill everything and being a little slower at times. I did start skipping more towards the very end when I was cleaning up the map completion and had all the health upgrades because then I could typically take at least two hits before dying and I had enough bellflowers to heal up between save bells.

I really liked that you could knock out some projectiles with both your arrows and leaf. It made the grenade enemies much simpler to just attack the grenade as you ran towards the enemy.

The last boss was definitely too easy but I still liked most of the bosses. I would have liked more in the mechanics to make it so you felt like you had to swap more between arrows and leaf attacks as many of the bosses you could just stand back and pelt with arrows but even then you still had to be careful not to get hit and do proper dodging.
