Classic Era Conclusion - The Sonic Jam

Going to start with the series of lost games with the big one and one that I have a lot of frustration over. This game might of been the Sonic 06 of the classic era if it released (due to it being in development hell), but very similar to 06, this game suffered thanks to Yuji Naka. Will explain this as I go on, but this game and 06 are reasons I have no respect for the man despite doing a great job during the mainline classic era Sonic's.

Lets go to the game itself first.

latest

It was going to be Sonic's first official 3D platforming adventure (not like 3D Blast with it being top-down, but completely 3D). If you played games like Klona or Pac-Man World on the PS1, this style of gameplay would be familiar; Sonic can walk into and out of the screen but the gimmick is that was using fish-eye lens.

What does this mean? Watch this Gif (not from the game but a fan effort re-create it):
fm43hiS.gif

The camera goes into and out of the screen as Sonic walks around and his moveset heavily mirrors his Classic style gameplay; he can run, jump, roll and spin-dash through the levels. Your goal is to collect special rings that Eggman is after.

Sonic has some new abilities like a Spin Slash that has his spikes point out and drill through objects but the gameplay footage released never showed this in action.

Yes, footage released, as this game never happened; it was put into deep development hell.

This site tells the story well, with it starting out as a 32X game but then migrating over the Saturn. Along the way, they started developing it for the PC but it wouldn't run as well on the Saturn hardware.

So, they decided "We need to use another engine". A head of Sega walked in and offered the Nights engine, to make development easier. I will just link to what that link states happen next....as it really angers me:
"Eager to help, Stolar promised the tools, and delivered with editors and the engine code not long afterward. The problem was that the creator of NiGHTS and the man credited with the creation of Sonic the Hedgehog, Yuji Naka, was not consulted on this, and became very irate, and, according to Stolar, forbade the team from using the engine, even threatening to leave the company if it didn’t happen. The team was back to square one, with two weeks lost developing on an engine that they couldn’t use. Things didn’t look good; in fact, they were downright awful."

What does that mean? Simple; Naka refused to let a struggling team use an engine he made and thus they had to reset a lot of work and start over again.

And this is after having a lot of trouble to begin with.

The team using a ton of different engines, story changing over time, gameplay styles with Knuckles/Tails/New Character added in, and unique engines for the levels & boss fights; they tried hard to get the game in finished state but nothing was sticking due to political problems behind the scenes (heads of Sega wanting them to use the boss engine for everything, different members making sections of the game, ect).

run1.gif

So, Naka's engine could of been the thing to save the game, but he chose to not let them use the engine, making the team suffer. You want to know what he also did? He had no confidence in western developers making Sonic. Not a great thing to tell fellow developers tackling the Sonic IP.

latest

I'm sorry but I have a lot of anger toward Naka over how Xtreme went, not because of the game not releasing, but from what happens next.

One developer, Chris Coffin worked hard to finish this game despite horrid working conditions and after so long, working over 16 hours a day, living in his damn office to get the game done and almost dying getting the game finished.....the game never saw the light of day.

If he continued working on the project, he would of gotten a fatal illness and died. So it ended and as a back-up plan, Sega commissioned Sega Japan and Travelers Tales to get a port Sonic 3D Blast for the Saturn.

More information on the game can be found here: http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_X-treme

Its interesting that Chris Sheen came back to work on Sonic with Sonic Boom Wii U (as he was credited as a key member for the project, doing a lot like Level Design, Gameplay Systems, ect).

Xtreme could of been an interesting game if it was finished and Naka letting the team using the Nights engine could of done a lot to get the game out and ensured the team had little stress. He also had a role with Sonic 06, as left Sonic Team mid-production to form his own studio to stop working on Sonic. But, he took some staff with him, polling resources that Sonic Team JP could of used to make the game.

Made a new section in the OP organizing everything I cover via posts, so nothing gets lost in the thread :). Hope this helps :D.

I played Sonic jam for hours and hours. I don't know how much time I spent watching the movies in the play house or combing the museum for tidbits of new information. It's something that's probably lost on today's youth, for but for a kid who loved Sonic pre-internet 2.0, this game meant everything to me. It's easily the best Sonic compilation out there, despite having the fewest games. The amount of extra content they included puts Gems and Mega Collection to shame.

On the Sonic Movie, I watched those previews for the Sonic OVAs countless times in the movie house. Years later when I actually watched got the movie on dvd (it was one of my first DVDs and costed a whole 24 dollars!), I wasn't as impressed with a lot of aspects in the movie, but still loved the visuals.

So many questions: Why is Knuckles a mole? Where'd he get that hat? Sonic lives on Angel Island? Does Sonic want a relationship with that Girl? Does Eggman? What do the lyrics of "Look Alike" even mean?

'Ice and water, steak and cow
'Autumn, this year, and last year
'Spark and burn, rain and cloud
'A, B, C, D...
'Tuesday, Wednesday, so is Friday
'How 'bout moons and headlights?
'What I say and what I think
'A-B-C-D-E-F...

I never undertand why they chose that fisheye camera. Does it offer some technical advantage over more traditional approaches?

I think they picked it due to it having the 'core' of the Genesis games while also offering more 3D-focused platforming.

Sonic Jam's role in educating people about JP Sonic was strong, allowing it to stand above other collections like Mega Collection and Gems Collection :).

I never read the lyrics to that song........man is that odd XD!

Regarding your questions.....will try to answer them, though I'm likely wrong :).
-Knuckles isn't a mole; he can dig into the ground and can 'glide' (though its more like....hovering or something)
-He got his hat from.....adventuring :l? Maybe Sonic gave it to him and he found it cool
-The world is broken up into dividing islands, with a the 'Good' parts being flying while the 'Bad' parts being on the ground. There is no Angle Island (I think?)
-Sonic doesn't want the girl, but Eggman seems to. I guess Sera does to considering how well she hits it off with Eggman throughout the movie XD! Was honestly hoping it to end with her being one of his partners in crime

Edit: Something related to Xtreme popped up! It apparently got toys and marketing push XD!

I was just joking with the questions. Knuckles is referred to as a Mole (And Sonic's best friend!) in the character descriptions on the DVD version of Sonic the movie. Always found it funny that the localizers didn't even do the most basic of research.

Knuckles_the_echina_and_mole_ova.jpg

I also forgot that Knuckles just flies like crazy in the movie. No gliding whatsoever, just like DBZ style flying around.

Mmm.....guess they didn't care or something :l.

Sonic Team helped co-produce the OVA, so likely they said "Um.....eh, let the guy hover around. Matches the games decent enough :)".

To be fair, he does hover in the GCI intro to Team Sonic's story in Zero Gravity (Starts around 2:13)

I mean, how can you make a game about a fast blue hedgehog that fights a fat doctor that capture woodland creatures for his own bidding into something that wants to take itself seriously?

You might as well be asking how anyone can a guy who dresses up as a bat to fight a clown seriously. Or how anyone can possibly get choked up over the death of a deer/lion/apatosaurus/Space-robot-that-turns-into-a-semi-truck in an animated film. Good story telling is still good story telling regardless of the weirdness of the scenario, such is the principal of sci-fi & fantasy.

Sonic Jam is the best compilation. It's too bad they didn't throw Sonic CD on there somehow otherwise it would have been perfect. And Sonic World makes me so hungry for a Saturn-era 3D Sonic in that style - I like Adventure but it definitely veered more towards realism than the crazy Sonic 1/2 aesthetics.

As for the cartoons, AOSTH is just weird, Underground is bad while SatAM and the OVA are both pretty excellent. Definitely confusing to recommend any of these to people who hadn't seen them back in the day though - three Sonic cartoons, all in which he's voiced by Urkel.

Yeah, there were a few items!

On the topic of the old animated series, the last piece of animated classic Sonic was a standalone DiC Christmas special in 1996 that was kind of a mish-mash of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Saturday morning Sonic the Hedgehog (i.e. "SatAM") characters and tropes, leaning more towards the former than the latter, though Sally shows up in a conspicuously non-speaking appearance. It was originally going to be called (and was briefly advertised as) "An X-Tremely Sonic Christmas," and Sonic even ends the special in the final version by wishing the audience "an X-Tremely Merry Christmas!" But just as Sonic X-Treme was canceled and replaced with the Saturn version of 3D Blast, the special was renamed "Sonic Christmas Blast". I've heard that it's kind of weird and kind of bad, but the picture quality seems crisper than the original AoSTH episodes?

They also made a Sonic X-Treme book that is still available on Amazon at an affordable price (but that doesn't at first glance seem to necessarily have anything to do with the work-in-progress game), a set of Australian stickers, and what I recall being among the earlier incarnations of the grotesque frozen Sonic-head, gumball-eye treats that you'd get from ice cream trucks in the U.S., if not elsewhere.

If there's a running theme to the Sonic X-Treme merchandise that did get released, it's that Sega seemed to be pretty fond of that neon line art look for a brief second, but I don't know that any of these products ultimately had anything to do with the game being worked on.

Also, for what it's worth, some of the game's 3D art did make it into an official, released game: 1996 PC educational game Sonic's Schoolhouse.

I get that Batman or Optimus Prime are silly designs to begin with, but they are translated well and conceptualized into what they are in terms of serious badasses. I just can't really see Sonic in the similar category, it's just how he was portrayed on the Genesis games that make it impossible for me to see him in a serious/real manner that Sonic 06 or SATAM try to convey.

But hey, that's just my stupid opinion.

It's always nice to relax to Sonic 1 easy mode.

Sonic Underground was such a weird thing. It was always on Teletoon (Canadian equivalent of Cartoon Network) along with the Donkey Kong Country show. I guess we liked our music based video game cartoons back then haha.

Seeing that reminded me I have this book:

Edit: Heh, weird that you can still buy it. I got it from a book fair in middle school.

Yeah, I got mine from there too. I only got to read a chapter or so before I shuffled into my backpack. When I went to read it on the bus, it was gone. =[

Oh man, I remember playing this game so much, because I couldn't find my MegaDrive anymore, it was such a joy to be able to play the classic Sonic games again. It was nice to discover all the little secrets in Sonic World, with the amazing arts.

What about Sonic into Dreams?

Mmm....might end up lumping Nights and Billy Hatcher into the retrospective considering how they tie into Sonic once I get to the Dreamcast era :).

You know what, you gave me a good idea :D; once I get through Adventure, Pocket Adventure and the Advance series, will take a 'break' from the retrospective and spend time covering eight games:
-Ristar
-Pyuo Pop
-Nights into Dreams
-Burning Rangers
-Chu Chu Rocket
-Phantasy Star Online
-Samba De Amigo
-Billy Hatchet & The Giant Egg

Sonic Team made them and a few of those games appear latter in the retrospective (Pinball Party, the All Stars series), so will cover them :D.

Seeing that reminded me I have this book:

I had this book as well. I always wondered if it was related to some game, or was just a weird new branding for Sonic.

Guess it was related to a game. As a kid, I didn't even know the Saturn existed, so I had no idea there was a cancelled game until a few years ago.

I would guess all the promotional stuff for Xtreme was made long before the final decision to scrap it was done, so they still sold all the merchandise to try and get profit of the Xtreme brand.

I still watch AoStH many times. I used to laugh a lot in my childhood, and I still do. Amazing show!! I wish that humour and style was back.

It looks like the episodes were written by people who never played the games, and only knew the concept, because someone at DIC told them what it was about, and just that. And you know what? I really worked well. No rings, no animals trapped inside robots, no metal Sonic (well,... kind of), no chaos emeralds (they appeared once, but the concept was totally different to the games), no game zones,... We had an evil scientist who build robots in order to conquer the world, with 3 robots that helped him with all the evil stuff, but all his plans were ruined because of a fast blue hedgehog and a young flying fox with two tails.

It was "Adventures of Dr Robotnik". Eggman was the main protagonist, the antihero, together with his subordinates, Scratch and Grounder, and the monkey robot that didn't appear much. He was the sexiest videogame and cartoon character ever, and his mother was even more evil than him. All of them were very charismatic, more than Sonic and Tails themselves.

Screw all those who say this show was bad. It wasn't 100% Sonic at all, but if we don't take the franchise so seriously, the show is great. Probably all those people who had never heard about the hedgehog but saw a chapter of the series, enjoyed it a lot more than many Sonic fans.

Something I would love, is a Classic Sonic platforming game in this universe. Great game and laughs guaranteed.

For the hell of it, here're all the Sonic books I got:

The "Look and Find" one is pretty neat with full color "Where's Waldo?" style pages.

I'm not surprised Sonic got a few books released XD! Never got any when I was younger.....maybe I will hunt them down on Amazon or something in the future :).

Regarding the Xtreme book, from what Amazon said, it links up to the Satam Cartoon/Archie comic more then it does with the game. Though early versions of Xtreme's story would of had the Satam cast (alongside Knuckles) join Sonic on his adventure; they were captured in a cyber world and Sonic 'jacked in' to save them. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Sally, Bunny Rabbot and a new character were going to be playable in this version of Xtreme (called Sonic Mars/Sonic in Mars).

I never said the show was bad (heck, its my third favorite Sonic show, behind Satam and Boom). It was just that the crazy elements from the show doesn't always 'click' with me, making me scratch my head more then laughing it it.

Still, it is an enjoyable show, more so if you turn your brain off and see the crazy images flashing across the screen :').

I think the closest we got to a game that you described would be the 3DS Boom games, but only due to the humor from the Boom TV show mirroring Adventures of Sonic the most (compared to every other incarnation of the series).

I remember having a wally like Sonic book, I probably still have it around at house.

Also 2 Sonic CDs with unrelated dance music. Second one was fairly good tbh.

Didn't know which thread to post this in but the artist for the 25th Anniversary Archie Comic posted some sketches for the comic;

Wish this was concept art for a game. :(

Thank you for the heads up! Saw them a while back, but didn't consider adding them to the OP.....mind if I link your post to the OP :D?

Well I mean that, Christmas Nights actually does let you use Sonic in it. Would it count as his first 3d platforming experience?

Mmm.....I guess it does :).

Sonic clearly wasn't built to work in the game though (as he couldn't do all the stuff Nights did) but still, you have a good point.

All this Sonic X-Treme stuff reminded me of Sonic Robo Blast 2, which is similar in concept (classic Sonic in a 3D space). It's still being worked on after all this time; they're working on slopes and rolling physics for the next version:

The last two games for this section are going to be lumped together due to not much needing to be said on them :).

Satam Game Pitch:
This was going to be 2D Action game but unlike the Genesis games, Sonic would be a bit slower and it would focus on stealth/combat more. The sprites are much larger then the past games and the game appears to be a lot slower.

The freedom fighters likely would of had a big role, as by the end of the pitch, Sally hacks a door using Nicole, then her and Sonic enter it.

Sonic has a few new moves here too; the Spin-slash which helps him drill through objects, a ring-toss ability that we see carry over into the main-line games (Sonic Battle) and the Pin Strike, which has Sonic explode some of his spines into foes.

It looked promising but it never happened. At least they were considering making a Satam game at some point :).

Here is a link to the Pitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pnsn0_w6K9Q

Sega Sonic the Hedgehog:

Remember my Sonic 3D Blast topic, and how it was isometric? This game did it first!

It was a simple arcade game where you played as Sonic alongside new characters Mighty and Ray. Mighty was one of the earliest designs for Sonic, so they editied it to be more original and bam, he stared in this game :).

You move the characters around with a track ball and you have to keep moving it in different directions to keep your characters moving. You have a jump button and it can attack foes and brake objects.

The main thing to take away here is the animations for the characters, as its very detailed. Couldn't find good gifs so going to link to a full walkthrough on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fl-TFck-r54

Its expressive and really nice :).

It also has a good OST, like most Sonic games do :D.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjNOYpYItvM&index=2&list=PL476DDC5D38FECAD7

One last thing before I close, the game supported 3-Player co-op, so that could make things crazy XD! The game never got a re-release outside of Japan, so.....very few ways to play this sadly :(. I would of made its own topic ala Sonic the Fighters/Sonic R if I could play it but oh well :).

That closes the lost adventures of the blue blur.....so what's next? Fan games :D!

Going to cover that and music in its own section before moving on to the next part of the retrospective, so hope you all look forward to it :).

I decided to cut this thread a bit short and not cover the fan games/fan hacks, as I could make an extra thread covering them on their own down the line. You've all been waiting a while for the Adventure thread and I want to start working on that soon :).

Sonic Stadium Music Adventure!

This community rocks and was my very first forum I was a part of XD! And when they announced that they were looking for people to make music for a collection album, it was amazing to see. So many people worked on this and its great to see a community work together to make something really special. Going to post a link to the site they hosted the music on, but going to list some of my favorite tracks via YouTube.

This is a MASSIVE collection, housing over...maybe 140 songs O_O! And the fact almost all of them rock is really damn impressive XD!

Great work here and between these two albums, you will have quite a Sonic Jam on your phone or iPod ;).

There is a LOT more online but these are just some of my favorites :). Hope you all enjoy jamming out to these tunes while reading through my future Sonic threads!

Now that this is out of the way, the Classic Era comes to a close. It was fun and we will be seeing the potbelly hedgehog in the future with Generations and some fan games I plan on covering (if I miss out on any, feel free to PM me! Open to covering interesting games :D). But going forward, we will be jumping into a new era........

The Dreamcast Era!

I covered a few games here and in the Modern Era already......but this next game is massive and one of the most important games I need to cover.

It is Sonic's major leap into the Third Dimension and it changed, well, everything.

New designs, new gameplay styles, new music style and it changed the direction for the series in a massive way. If you are strictly a classic fan, I can understand if you have more.....'mixed' feelings on this and future games but I want to cover the series in a great light and I am hopeful you all enjoy my future threads on the Dreamcast and Modern Eras :).

Next up on the list, Sonic's first jump into the 3D world, 2 Years after Mario leaped into 64 bits.......Sonic Adventure! Lets open our hearts, as it will be alright.
