This Nathan Drake GIF perfectly sums up how I reacted to this Nathan Drake GIF.

I don't really get the big deal over this. It's from a cutscene, with mocap. What's so impressive about it?

Yeah that gif is ridiculous, the little details are nuts.

ND are just unmatched when it comes to coding to the metal, maybe SSM can give em a run for their money.

I need this game though, like yesterday.

I love the explosion reaction animations in the MP as well (taken from the Making Of... Thread.)

Like, they're so smoooooth. I can't even tell where the animations begin and end it's done so well.

I don't know what they're technically doing with it, but just looking at it is not blowing my mind like some people here. It's no more or less impressive than this.

Look at The Order or Tomb Raider as well. All are great looking games. I guess I just don't get the reactions here. This should be standard for cinematic games today.

Hmm people on the other page/ND behind the scenes thread have explained in detail but it's just the insanely pristine visual level combined with all the little details, his fingers bumping against wall rocks, skin deformation etc.

It's just an overall incredible effort and this gif gives a great hint as to how ND are just raising the bar for large narrative driven SP games.

Yeah.i don't get it either. Show this in a gameplay sequence and i will be impressed.

As of now it might as well be cgi. What's the point of real-time Cutscenes if the gameplay model doesn't even come close to the graphical fidelity of the Cutscenes.

Daaaaaaaang,

I want games that look this crazy on PC so I can free cam and look at the details + mods. Gotta love console first party games like this, where the devs can go all out to showcase their hardware.

I want to see a ND fighting game, just to see how incredible it could look.

PM: Rushy, Motor, Storm. Bruh!

The Order is great but you are kidding with Tomb Raider. Especially the facial animations and lip syncing (or lack thereof).

I thought ND did all their facial animation by hand? Used facial capture as a reference?

Um... From a quick google search I found this:

http://www.psu.com/News/25385/Uncha...as-same-level-of-detail-in-game-and-cutscenes

Unless it changed from December of 2014 to now, the cutscene models and ingame models are nearly the same.

I thought ND did all their facial animation by hand? Used facial capture as a reference?

They still do I believe.

arguably there already are, or at least more detailed if you factor in resolution

what ND is doing an amazing job here with is the animation

it's nice to do a fourth entry on the same (or rather improved upon) hardware with all that experience and a crazy budget, and it shows

I'm guessing there's some logic in the finger animations to conform to walls that is giving his hand that strange look. Looking a bit rubbery.

Otherwise, ahem, jesus fucking christ.

I don't know of any other games that have skin deforming in realtime. That alone sets this apart from anything else.

Edit- well I guess the UFC games

Looks great, for sure, but I would imagine this is a cutscene. Pretty sure ND is rendering all the cutscenes to video for play back. If I'm wrong, please let me know!

If I were to nitpick the gif, I would say his eyes go a little bit dead toward the end of the shot. No taking away what they've achieved. It's fantastic.

The cutscenes have been confirmed to be realtime. We've even seen gameplay video with skin deformation.

Oh they do? Huh, why the change? Their facial animations in The Last Of Us were insanely good for being by hand.

They didn't start using facial capture until mid way through development, so some scenes are still done completely by hand (faces). Not sure why they changed.

They are doing real time cutscenes for this game.

Not even close.

What is going on with. that. left. hand.
There's always some animation for the sake of movement even in AAA titles and movies, to not make static limbs seem, well, static. He's rubbing his hand down a rock wall, but I think they're a bit overdone since it does look a tad rubbery. If his fingers don't move that much then it doesn't translate well when played back, and it's kind of hard to find a middle ground with really subtle details such as this.

I mean, rewatching the same replaying gif dozens of times you'll pick up on it, but when playing the game and watching these cutscenes it's hardly worth picking up on when there's more to look at on screen.

I dunno, there's something uber clean (especially with the skin and hair) about that QB gif that strikes me as more uncanny than the Uncharted example. Reminds me of CG Jeff Bridges from Tron Legacy.

Of course you'd find that impressive.

I think SSM opened new motion capture studio recently that both SSM and ND can share with each others. Before ND had to hire outside studio to do that so this can explain.

That looks great, but this is more impressive because of the small details. The skin deforming, the lip being pulled, the hand touching the rock wall bumps, the fact that the bones become more prominent as he touches the wall. Those little details are what set it apart from what you posted and those games you mentioned.

The fingers might look slightly off, but look at the way the bones in his hand/knuckles become more prominent when he touches the rock. That's nuts detail. Nuts.

Also look at how the pinky and ring fingers actually flick off the rock. Took me a bunch of loops before i noticed that one.

Again I think the fingers are just morphing slightly unrealistically to "follow" the surface, that's what is a little bit jarring about it.

Yeah this is how I feel, even last gen there was stuff like this. I remember being impressed by Lasky in Halo 4, well really most cutscenes in Halo 4 were very well animated, but Lasky kind of stands out because there was a gif of him shaking master chief's hand with a smirk on his face that was posted on GAF a lot back then.

EDIT: Found it:
halo_4_6_by_gifsandmore-d6dnlt9.gif

And so if they could do this last gen I only expect it to be more impressive this gen with newer tech all around. So I'm not saying it doesn't look good, I'm just saying that: that's the level of animation I expect from a AAA studio this gen.

Definitely not an STD, as I'm a pure.
You seriously got people in here trying to downplay this. And their examples are all bogus as hell too lol. That QB gif doesn't look impressive at all.

Is this real time cut scene? or pre-rendered?

Not really blown away. That's what I've come to expect from AAA games now. Not necessarily super comparable outside of the faces, but Halo 5 had very convincing cutscenes.
