This Nathan Drake GIF perfectly sums up how I reacted to this Nathan Drake GIF.

Just wanted to use this gif :p You are totally entitled to your opinion :)

I always thought she looked like a potato in the previous games, but clearly they were going for Catherine Keener all along

i clearly prefer hand made animations

You're just babbling, facial capture still involve ND devs using hand animations
And there is no way the that TLoU is better in this regard with all the tech achievements they have made for UC4.

We finally made it to the Beowulf phase in video games

I've actually been waiting for this moment since I first saw that film xD
TO:1886 was a good glimpse into that but now I want insane CGI-like visuals to match with a very good game haha

I don't know what they're technically doing with it, but just looking at it is not blowing my mind like some people here. It's no more or less impressive than this.

Look at The Order or Tomb Raider as well. All are great looking games. I guess I just don't get the reactions here. This should be standard for cinematic games today.

Jesus, what game is this?

Oh my god, video games need this.

I love the explosion reaction animations in the MP as well (taken from the Making Of... Thread.)

Like, they're so smoooooth. I can't even tell where the animations begin and end it's done so well.
1) That light and reflection was not there in the beta.
2) Neither were those explosive reactions. OoO

They most certainly were. Those gifs are from gaf player footage during the open-beta weekend. That particular explosive reaction only happened if the explosive was upgraded to cause stagger though.

The Psycho character bit with the flashlight at the end of a Crysis 3 gameplay trailer impressed me a lot me at the time.

There are other games that are good looking, but the shaders, lightning and the small touches makes ND just one step above everyone else. Simply breathtakingly good.

I don't see anything special, it is simply motion capture, would be impressive if procedurally generated in real time, and IIRC U4 has procedurally generated animations which deserve far more recognition than this.

Looks like a Disney movie Holly shit...

Naughty Dog showing everyone they can't compete with them...

Good luck Santa Monica =)

That looks like "Botox: The Video Game" compared to the facial animations and expressions in UC4. If you honestly can't see that...

Sigh. I honestly think these kind of threads produce the worst posts. Why not explain your opinion instead of saying it like this?
It is not as intuitively obvious as you suggest... far from.
I honestly, as someone who spends way too much time staring at pixels, see quality of a very similar level. Post processing is what looks decidedly different to me.
Facial Paralysis
Sigh. Why do I bother coming to these threads?

I've saw a few people say facial capture, but how do you capture a face when a hand is obscuring a portion of the performance and how do you capture it without pulling the little reference balls off? Seems the whole hand face interaction portion would be hand keyed.

The actor probably did not put the hand directly to the face so as to not mess up the capture rig. Just like when to characters that were perf captured hug: in real life the hug was probably relatively stand-offish so as to not have their capture rigs slam into eachother and distort results, but this is tightened up manually in post. So yeah, they manually touch things up. Every and any game doing perf capture has to manually touch up lots of aspects, either due to missing data points or for arstic reasons (transposing a performance onto a character with a different facial structure for example).
It's Striking Cunt

Finally, some accurate information in this thread.

Maturity, bitches.
Different styles, but I'd say Punch-Out Wii is still one of the best standards of animation in gaming. So much life in every character.
