Hyrule Warriors Legends Review thread

The embargo ended a couple of minutes ago so reviews are popping up.

Destructoid: 8
Personally, I don't mind paying for Hyrule Warriors all over again with Legends. I got hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of the Wii U version, and being able to relive that is fine with me. But not everyone is as keen as I am, so if you're not a superfan already, it's a tough sell -- because really, this series deserves to be immortalized on a big screen.

Gamespot: 7
Assessed solely as a Zelda game, Hyrule Warriors probably isn’t good enough to lure in non-Dynasty Warriors fans, but it is passable enough to offer Musou lovers something different to play between their usual battles for dynastic superiority. Stereoscopy notwithstanding, it’s technically impressive. And while age-old criticisms of Warriors' repetitiveness still applies, that burden is eased somewhat thanks to the option to play this handheld edition in bursts. Now nearly twenty years since the birth of the Warriors series, here we have a convincing argument that this franchise is best suited to handhelds.

God is a Geek: 7,5
What we have with Hyrule Warriors: Legends is a Zelda franchise fan’s wet dream come true; the amount of included characters, items and features is designed to encourage them to be excited for every moment they experience. Every unexpected character appearance, the recognisable moments, and especially the treasure chest opening sequences, heighten the enjoyment of a game that can, at times, drag under the weight of its constant directing of your attention. Anyway, it could be down to the source material, but Hyrule Warriors: Legends is by far the best musou game I have played, if you yourself have struggled with them in the past this may very well be the game that changes that.

GamesRader: 2,5/5
There are moments where Hyrule Warriors Legends really gels. Firing up a super move in the middle of an oncoming crowd, triggering a slow-motion effect before sending an entire army tumbling some 30ft backwards looks superb. And the constant affirmation that comes from levelling up messages, mission complete fanfares and last-minute heals does make for an entertaining, pleasant experience. But this kind of game needs to be hyper-slick to stand out, and Hyrule Warriors Legends isn't slick. Passable, certainly, but not the stuff of legend.

Wiitalia (Italian): 7
The best versions remains the Wii U one, but the 3DS port, played on the New3DS model, runs decently enough to guarantee tons of hours of pure action Zelda-branded. Longevity, decent performances, good gameplay refinements for dual screens and touch interaction make Hyrule Warriors Legends an enjoyable Warriors adventure for the New 3DS.

Will add more reviews as I find them.

The Gamespot review is seriously downplaying the performance issues on hardware that is not a New 3DS. The game looks like it is running in slow motion on OG hardware.

Do they say:

How do you access the new content? How substantially different is the main game supposed to be from the Wii U?

I can't read them right now, but am curious.

Don't play this game on a original 3DS except for people that like slowmotion battles. It is really really horrible - not unplayable, but sub it often feels like sub 20.

Edit: To clarify: I don't have a n3DS so I've played about 5-6 hours on a O3DS and had to stop, because it didn't got any better.

Might get it if I ever switch to N3DS.
I had tons of fun with the Wii U version, I feel like I got enough out of it already, the new characters are still nice though.

20fps should be considered unplayable and unacceptable for a modern release.

But 20fps really isn't unplayable.

Anyway I'm having trouble finding good footage of the game playing on an n3ds. The stuff I can find is all promo videos with that stupid 3ds system border around them.

This kind of flew under my radar so I have a few questions.

Does this include all the DLC from the Wii U? Never got around to it.

If I buy this digital will I miss out on anything? Like the code to being the characters to Wii U.

And have they released the pricing for this versions DLC? Saw what games the characters will be from the other day and am very interesting.

Thought the game was coming out in April for whatever reason so having this week is a pleasant surprise.

Thinking about getting this as someone who didn't play the Wii U version and has a New 3DS. Nice to hear the port is apparently pretty good (assuming you're not on a OG 3DS).

My review is gonna be uploaded in few minutes.
I've played the game on a New 3DS and it runs decently, while the Wii U version is still the def version to me (now that almost all the DLC have been confirmed as purchasable); Nintendo didn't give any guidance on the possible disclaimer about the differences between the New3DS and the OG3DS, so I put a disclaimer at the top of the review to advise that my test was done on the New3DS.
Gonna link it here as soon as possible

All the Wii U content is in this version already. Yes.

If you buy digital you miss out on nothing, in fact, you get a free home menu theme on top (in EU at least, see this week's eShop PR - no idea about an NA offer).

DLC pricing options are all over the news sites. Just came out a few days ago.

Probably the first Zelda release I skip on. Had my fill with the OG release, don't want to play an uglier version with bad performance.
Though I was sorely missing the character switching that Tecmo implemented on the first 3DS musou game on the Wii U version. Would've made the game a lot better.
Also surprised that they're wasting all of the character ideas on this and the new dlc instead of a sequel on future hardware where it could look and run better

Seems 3D mode makes the game run badly.
Guess I will not be rebuying this version then...

Edit: Wow, the OG 3DS footage looks rough. Should have made it New 3DS exclusive.

Wait... seriously? I'd thought all of the content was available on the WiiU as DLC. Man that's such a let down.

the Wii U gets a Characters pack, plus 3 additional DLC pack of the new 4 packs.
The Wind waker map (it is one) is not transferrable.
Reading through all the possible purhcasable contents, the Wii U game is and will simply be huge anyway, with a costant support from launch until late 2016. the few contents missing on the Wii U version imho are way more than balanced by the better Wii U performances.

This kind of flew under my radar so I have a few questions.

It includes all the previously released Wii U DLC, but there will be additional contents too, and additional DLC. You can look for a GAF topic about dates, contents and pricing.
Buying digital, you still receive a code for the Wii U download, in the virtual receipt on the eshop page.

On the New3DS IT IS a very good port, obviously downgraded from the Wii U version, but still pretty enjouyable, thanks to: huge contents, second "stick" for camera, touch map and icons, switching functions for character on the field added, good (not great, but good) performances.

Save transferring?

Nope, and THIS is the worst issue with the game, imho.

Yeah, this should have been a New 3DS exclusive.

Eh, people would've complained that Nintendo was just trying to pressure people to buy a New 3DS. It seems many don't think there is a significant power difference and most exclusivity is manufactured solely to sell people yet another 3DS model.

I am gonna pass on the game and probably pick it up when it gets a price drop or when I get the handheld NX, assuming it will be backward compatible.

It runs at 20fps, which isn't ideal, but it's hardly slow motion.

It is for an action game.

The game also looks worse than the Wii U version

Man, they're making it easier and easier for me to pass up on it.

Are we getting a demo?

It's up on the European e-shop.

It's not really that bad.

Every time people complain about 20fps I just remember that Peace Walker and even Ocarina of Time were 20fps. It really depends on the type of game, especially how the camera works - small screen changes between frames for example make it less noticeable

Not that bad? It's terrible. OoT was released in 1998. This is 2016. I would hope that at this point we have at least slightly higher standards when it comes to 3D gaming.

I feel like there is a very limited demographic cross-section that this release of the game is applicable too. As a Nintendo / Zelda fan and not a Musou fan, this game was always an "on the fence" purchase. Fan service appeal to you? OK with grinding? Then it was fun and probably worth it. If you were a Mosou fan then you obviously already picked it up and probably already own the DLC.

Maybe you held out on it or don't own a Wii U. Then you fall into the next category: Own a 3ds and was interested in this games concept. But oh no, do you own a NEW 3DS or an old one? Chances are if you own a N3DS then you're a huge Nintendo fan and probably already own a Wii U, in which case you probably found yourself already weighing the game when it came out there (as I described above). If you don't have a N3DS then you get an obviously inferior version of the game.

If you already own the Wii U version of the game then you probably already enjoyed it. Why would you want to start over and do it all over again? These games are 100s of hours long. It's like buying a Bethesda game on a console after you already own the higher quality PC version and completed it.

I find myself in a seemingly rare group that owns the Wii U version, played it quite a bit, and has a N3DS but never bit the bullet on the DLC. Now I'm still on the fence. Do I get this 3DS version to essentially get the DLC that I haven't yet purchased, plus some more? Or do I just spend that money on the DLC for the Wii U version?

What a weird release. Sorry for this insane rambling. I just felt it needed pointing out to some degree. It feels like every potential target audience of this game is getting shafted to some degree.

Sell the game on a system with a much higher user base is essentially the reason.

And locking new content in an upgraded version (par the course for Koei Tecmo) to sell the game again to owners of the Wii U version.

So will there be a Wii U version with all the new content from the 3DS? I don't want to play it on handheld but I don't don't want to miss content either

At the moment, no.
Their plan is for people to purchase the 3DS version to unlock any additional content in the Wii U version.

Though that's just characters and weapons. No new adventures on the Wii U version... I don't believe even in the second season pass DLC either, but I might be wrong about that.
