There are a few concepts out there that fit that bill, and I actually quite like them. I've always been a fan of the Gamecube controller, and I think with a few tweaks it could be great.

Something like this, with a screen the size of the iPhone 6S Plus would be nice. I'd change the face buttons and add those scroll wheel LR buttons. Love the shape, though.

I've always liked the Gamecube controller, and I like this concept a lot, however the digital cross and right analog looks like its uncomfortable to use, it could need the handles on it to make it better.

Something that I don't think has been brought up enough is that companies file more patents than they actually use. For instance I remember the patent for a DualShock controller that could split in half - a terrible idea that Sony has thankfully left in the depths on Hell. Just because Nintendo has some controller patents that's doesn't mean their eventual controller or handheld will resemble that patent, because unless every Nintendo controller or handheld patent that has been filed has also been reported or found, it could be something completely different.

If Nintendo has filed a patent and it's been published online, someone has posted it on GAF. However, as we've seen with past Nintendo parents, sometimes the patent is only published online after the hardware in question has released.

I'm torn. While I would LOVE to see Nintendo just go back to a GameCube style console, we already have so many traditional platforms. I wouldn't mind seeing something different, either.

I'm just the only one, but i didn't like the gamecube controller that much. I specially dont like the layout from the buttons at the right side.

I still like the snes more. Gamecube did had the worst mario kart, super mario game(sunshine).

It did had some good games like eternal darkness and the rebirth demo, but its sure not my favorite console.

I've tried mobile VR and it's actually pretty good.
I do wonder if they could do something like google cardboard.
Bringing console VR for under $50 could be a big boost to them...but would require a really expensive handheld/console
They slide off and don't work period.
I'd imagine Nintendo could make a good one if needed.
Just an option if the haptics aren't good enough.
But it doesn't sound like something they'd do.

Man people just can't let the Gamecube controller die, can they?

The Wii U Pro Controller is practically perfection, from stick placement to battery life, there's no reason to change it unless they want to stick in a gyro and/or accelerometer.

Quick and dirty mockup using Gimp.
I'd be down for something like this with better looking analog triggers and scroll wheels of course :p

Why are we posting "Project Cafe" era mockups now? They aren't going to release another gamepad thing. The controller might have a screen, but it won't be used in the same way that it's used with WiiU.

I still think the biggest problem with the screen controller thing was well, the lack of multiple controllers in multiplayer. It meant you couldn't give the same experience to all players. The best games seem to just ignore it's existence as a result, being better played with the likes of a controller pro.

Unless they figured out a solution to that problem, doubling down on it seems rather odd to me.

Let's say this is real for the moment, and then we take the ever "accurate" Geno who claimed the NX controller has haptic analog sticks that can create resistance when vacuuming up a ghost in Luigi's Mansion 3. Doesn't the "leaked" controller disprove Geno's claims?

I just can't see what a second screen does for a home console. Neither could Nintendo with the Wii U so I would be amazed if they do it again.

That VR idea is cool though. One beefy handheld. It can be used alone or plug into TV for big screen. Plus fit's in Nintendo VR headset!

That would be pretty cool.

Asymmetrical multiplayer was the concept of giving unique gameplay to the gamepad holder, and it was cool. There's pro controllers for multiplayer and if a game is designed around it, they can just make asymmetrical gameplay or use normal controllers.
That wasn't an issue the Wii U suffered from

Zelda uses it very well. Gamepad was essentially the Swiss Army knife of video game controllers, nothing detrimental either since it allowed normal inputs as well.
The problem was that the idea wasn't unique enough and the price was too high.

Ya'll are cray cray

I love my WiiU Pro, but the goddamn sticks need to be in the bottom middle and the pad and buttons on the top outer

It's literally objectively better

Literally objectively

I had never made the connection before but it's interesting to look back at some of the project cafe mockups

You know, this would be pretty damn nice if the face was squared off to match a standard tv shape and it had the rumored rotating L and R buttons like the rumor says. Anyone with some decent PS skills want to try shopping it?

Asymmetrical multiplayer was a buzzward marketing term to cover up a major flaw with their design. There is no design that is better with one tablet + 3 other controllers that wouldn't have been the same or better with four tablets.

But it couldn't do that, so they dressed a flaw up as a feature.

I hope the console's controller sticks with the Wii U pro's format. Its comfortable and battery life is insanely good.
If they want to show off interconnectivity just make the NX handheld an alternative controller for the console where you can put stuff from the console game on the smaller handheld screen.

I just want to be able to play 4 player local multiplayer with the default controller of the system. I'm tired of the multitude of other controllers i need for the WiiU if i want local multiplayer. I'd take a clean start controller wise at this point if it meant 4 player local play with the default controller was guaranteed.

Things are going too far.

I could be wrong, but somehow I don't think VR would work well if there are two massive joysticks in your field of vision. Maybe if they use some optics trick...?

edit: Nevermind, was already discussed last page.

New thought here (?)

Does it make any sense whatsoever that the camera would be on the bottom? In use, the camera would be pointing at your shirt/chest. Also, the way this is set up leaves less room for screen buttons. Doesn't this seem to be following the patent so closely that it doesn't even make sense from a practical perspective? You'd think if this was a real device, the camera would be at the top, and you would use the more generous bottom screen space for easier button presses.

I think camera on the bottom makes sense if it's meant for eyetracking. That could give it a Nintendo 3DS-like or VR effect -- you look to the left and the camera shifts -- you can blink to select options, etc. This focus on eye-tracking and eye UI may also reduce the need for buttons.

edit2: BTW it is unlikely the image, if true, is "upside down" as both the B in the button, as well as the FPS tracker toward the top of the screen align in the way the current image is oriented.

For those asking about the Rayman fake guy's comments, here's what I remember seeing

Okay so unless nintendo created some new kind of magic screen nobody else knows about, this is fake?

I'm not sure what he means by no parallax at the edge of the screen meaning no glass or plastic.

On his Twitter though he said he took 17 different cell phone photos of his 1st Gen iPad mini, which is 1024x768, but much larger screen so probably a similar ppi, and every single one had moire. He said every single photo of similar quality to the leak he has seen of screens show moire.

I do think the lack of any moire showing up in a photo of a screen is fairly damning that this is fake. Likely either photoshopped or some sort of knockoff of a screen using a light inside the device.

There is also some weird pixelation that shows up on the photo analysis of the screen near the left thumbstick, which maybe does indicate some photoshopping on the screen?

That's my point, the camera on top would be better for eye tracking and facial recognition, on the bottom the camera would be pointing at your upper chest and chin more than your eyes. Obviously the "leak" is crafeed so the camera is at the bottom, but I'm saying from an engineering perspective that doesn't make the most sense (do phones have the front camera on the bottom of the phone? No). Leaker designed the fake after the patent, thus the bar is on the bottom.

Hmm yeah I see what you mean. I thought maybe the way eyes angle down might help but I think you are probably right -- I'm no engineer though. Phones are a different beast because of the way they are typically held compared to this device, imo.

See the lighter colored pixelation on the screen near the left stick? Sort of top middle of screen, somewhat closer to left stick. Evidence of it being shopped?

It's fake. Looks like an empty shell prototype with a lightbulb in it and a little transparency added to the UE4 demo cutout and pasted to the screen.

That's a strong statement.

Subjectively I've felt that my thumbs feel like they're at a more natural position with the sticks being where they are on the pro controller.

Not true at all. Battle Quest, Luigi's Ghost Mansion, Metroid Blast disprove that. The point is that these games utilize multiple control schemes in conjunction with each other in creative ways. And it works brilliantly in games like Nintendo Land. It's just a shame we don't have more like it.

Four tablets is just a multiplayer 3DS game.

I would use the same controler as the leaked version, but less oval and without the right analogstick. Then deliver a part with it that you can attach on the right side of the controller which hold the right stick & buttons. This way you can use it when needed. This way we could improve the gameplay for fps games where you arent forced to use that right analog stick. Instead you have a mouse like solution...

I really hope in April Nintendo talks about NX. Just talk about SOMETHING! Give us a date of when you're going to talk about the NX.

There's nothing left to advertise for the Wii U except Starfox Zero between now and E3 (Zelda and Paper Mario coming after). Starfox doesn't release until April 22. That's a whole month like just say something in the new fiscal year (like first week of April would be nice).

If NX is releasing this year, they will literally have to say something no later than their next investor briefing on April 27th.
