NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

I actually think it looks kinda sexy for a prototype. Much better than the other pictures led to believe. More asthetically pleasing than the Wii U gamepad is at least. But looks can't tell me how this will feel in my hands. Wonder, should this be legit, if buttons will be added to the final version.

Ok I think this thing is legit. That looks far too convincing to not be real and its the 2nd leak we've had of the exact same controller.

I wonder what 3rd parties think of this thing...

Say what you will about the lack of buttons, this looks beautiful (and very un-Nintendo!). I just wish the glass covered the plastic strip at the bottom.

Having used a MacBook's haptic trackpad, I think Nintendo could actually pull this off if they were able to use haptics to also simulate the texture of the virtual buttons as well as feeling of clicking them.

If this is real, I'm willing to give it a try!

I dread to think what the cost is going to be if this is some kind of forced controller for the console, I really can't see them making that mistake again

Going on their track record, Nintendo won't compromise cost - they'll compromise other things to keep cost reasonable.

Hopefully one or other or both of the systems - if they are being bundled as one interlocking system - aren't compromised too much to meet price requirements. But a cheap, small home box wouldn't exactly be shocking.

What I don't get is, given the amount of people currently loving their smartphones, clearly there is a desire for touchscreen interfaces. So why so many declaring it'll fail?

I say this will hit with mainstream America a la Wii era and Sony and Microsoft will again be left playing catch up.

If the touch-only technology is improved enough over the current state of mobile gaming to where you can actually do "real" gaming on it, why wouldn't people be OK with it?

I actually think this is an important point. If Nintendo is trying to push the technology forward to the point where virtual buttons offer a similar level of responsiveness and feedback to physical buttons, isn't that just a good thing for the whole industry?

So is 2016 the year touch controls will begrudgingly earn mass-acceptance on 'Gaf?

Since it's Nintendo bringing it instead of Apple, I'm going to say YES!

'Bout damn time.

It actually all makes sense when you consider Nintendo's current plan for the mobile space.

They haven't been a company that has really cared too much about traditional experiences for a while.

So that pretty much seals it then. Either this is quite literally, the greatest gaming related troll in the history of the internet, or that's what a prototype controller.

We'll see how this plays out. I do worry about the size. It looks like it's barely 5 inches wide, which could be uncomfortable for anyone with fairly big hands.

Awesome, glad that it's something different. I know a lot of people want something traditional, but I bet Nintendo will have some cool ideas for this.

The entire point of a dedicated mobile gaming system is so that you can provide an experience that can't be found on tablets and phones - ie, the availability of actual buttons.

I like everything else about this, but the lack of physical buttons changes everything.

Oh jeez, that looks uncomfortable to hold. It's almost as wide as the gamepad, but much thinner and more pointed near the ends, without handles. And that's not even getting into the them using a circle pad thing again, but also having that replace buttons.

Please don't do this Nintendo. D:

I......actually....like it......sorry guys!
ok no phyical buttons but cmon how much longer is the world gonna need phyical buttons? eventually tech will move away from certain older tech. Iphone is trying to get rid of 3.5 head jacks where nintendo is tryin to get rid of traditional controllers. Lets see what they do with this controller if it feels great and the hypaic feedback feels great and it works then hey? who cares. so my first thought is wait...what? then im thinking of the possiblities in what ninendo can do with this and it might just work. I do like the look of the controller.
I think the issue is that haptic buttons aren't really understandable just looking at pictures, and I'm willing to bet even people who read the other aspects probably have no idea what haptic technology actually is (and by extension, why it could render physical buttons obsolete)

I also wonder what else they planned for that wouldn't be represented here. For example Wii has several controller extensions like the nunckuk so could it be that Nintendo allows for a shell of something that changes the way this base component works?

I still don't understand what could be the upside of that design. I'm willing to try new things but Nintendo lately seems to design things that show no real worthwhile benefit. And this one seems to the worst case if it's true.

I haven't read any of the posts in this thread, because there's too much to go. All I have to say is that I don't think this is "THE NX controller." If the NX is really a hybrid system, then this is likely the handheld system (3DS successor) that can also serve as a "Wii U gamepad" for the NX. I think it's safe to assume that the NX will also have traditional controllers.
