The Making Of Uncharted 4 - Pushing Technical Boundaries Part 2 (gameplay)

Didn't see this one Gif'd:

Just really loving the hand to hand animations.

That head animation after the elbow hits bothers me, it's way overdone. Kinda like he's a first timer in hand to hand combat.

The vegetation looks gorgeous, its something that could look better in most other games (Ratchet and Clank PS4 has bad looking grass in comparison IMHO).

The hair do's for some of the ND staff are wild...

Oh!, and hopefully there's a Jak and Daxter easter egg hidden somewhere in the game.

FFXV is the only game with animation that either matches or outdoes UC4 that I've seen so far (or played).

If the rest of FFXV plays like the demo, there's no doubt in my mind that gameplay animations are either close or better in FFXV. Even that game however falters in comparison when looking at the whole package (facial animations, cut scenes etc).

But for the life of me, I can't think of another game that touches UC4 in the animation department. Most games either do gameplay pretty well or cutscene, not really both. And even the gameplay oriented ones don't really hold a candle to the UC4 animations that I experienced in the multiplayer beta, let alone the SP so far.

Yeah, aside from FFXV there is really nothing that comes close to Unchared 4 in the animation department.

But as you said Uncharted 4 is even more impressive because it rocks in all the aspects of animation, not just gameplay movement, but also facial expressions.

I switched to an alt account to ditch my embarrassing tag so I could be an embarrassing Naughty Dog fanboy in peace. Ask me anything!
The thing about Uncharted 4 is even with it's brilliant animation, it still manages to be super responsive and play really well.

Ellie>Drake

I rather hang out with Drake instead of Ellie any day man! Drake is life. He is the coolest!

"You're going to get to have that on the stick."

lol Bruce knows how to hype his game.

A technical masterpiece. Best anim sys I've ever seen. ND simply do things no one else dares to. As a cohesive technical package it's simply a true next gen step up. The only people I can see getting close to this is as a package, are ND. Special mention to Henry's music. So pleased Greg's theme remains. Coupled with Henry's electic scoring I believe we are in for an audio tour de force.

Bravo ND...bravo.

The music is chilling. I'm replaying the video over and over to listen to the tracks but ND employees and their crazy hairstyles keep talking over them! Which I don't mind at all. They seem so excited for us, cause we'll get to play it soon.

I didn't play Episode Duscae, but from what i've seen in trailers it looks really good, even if somewhat exagerated sometimes. But to me, what's really important is how responsive the controls are while maintaining fluid animations, and Uncharted 4 beta blew me away in that regard.

In Uncharted 3 I felt that they sacrificed a bit the precision of the controls to give priority to the animations. I'm really glad they didn't make the same mistake with Uncharted 4. The game controls really, really well without feeling "mechanic".

Wish i could disable ALL camera shake on all games , freaking hate it

While I don't hate the cam shake, in that instance, it's too much! If they shake the cam as much for this bump-gun-to-chest, wondering what they have in reserve for a grenade blast. (Probably there's a gif of it somewhere though)

I'm playing through the collection right now and a lot of the animations some of you are swooning over are present in Uncharted 2. I even had Chloe save me from being executed.

Systems, systems, systems, systemic opportunities, choices and decision making, AI intelligence and behaviors, interactions where once there were strictly controlled animations or confined corridors.

That's all the stuff I love to hear.

The art and animations bring it to life, the characters and story give it meaning and connection and impact, but its the systems that define the game and are its beating heart, and I love that Naughty Dog is trying to make cinematic gaming and storytelling as interactive as possible and as much a function of player choice as they can.

Bravo.

And to think, those side to side rope swinging parts were always my least favorite aspect of Uncharted traversal. Too damn chunky and finicky. All the analog improvements both in movement and melee look amazing.

It's great to know that the U4 beta felt really responsive! Excessive character animation getting in the way of controls drove me crazy in both Episode Duscae and U3, which is a shame, as it's always so nice to get unique character animation. I remember U3 being quite guilty of this when interacting with levels (like Nate deciding he'd grab a wall when he was running past it, slowing him down). FFXV's combat wasn't too bad, but dealing with Noctis' excessively animated/mo-capped run and walk cycles felt quite sluggish to control. I found both U3 and Duscae really frustrating in that regard.

Not this time around, at least. Hey totally did that with Uncharted 3 though. The only significant set pieces they didn't straight up demo were the smaller boats and the horseback caravan, and they still showed snippets of those in trailers.

Uncharted 3 should be an example to all forms of entertainment on how not to market a game. lol

UC4 obviously looks absolutly stunning at many parts, especially the environments, but somehow I still like FFXV's animations more. There's this slight disjoint between head and body movement in UC4 that I can't help but notice it all the time.

So Drake is pretty much a master weapons thief lol. Every other snippet he's stealing someone else's gun.

Oh man the lighting and environment here really makes me excited for a next-gen Red Dead. C'mon Rockstar you're late to the party.

Are you being sarcastic? Uncharted 3 is an incredible game. Sure, it's more flawed than it's predecessor, but it was always going to be a tough ask following on from one of the best games ever made. I say this having only recently played through it again. Uncharted 3 is at 92 on metacritic after 97 reviews for a reason.

Did you even read my post?

user was not talking about the game quality but instead on how sony marketed the game, like for real o_O

He's talking about marketing. ND were criticized quite a bit for showing so much of the game before its release. I think it's why you've seen them take a step back for TLoU and U4. For U4 we got one set piece demo, one mechanics driven demo, a single story trailer, and a few pieces of new footage in these behind the scenes documentaries. That's obviously excluding the multiplayer trailer.

Now in year three and still no true current gen Rockstar game. This only makes me even more hyped. If Rockstar San Diego (their tech team/ ex-Angel) is back to Red Dead I expect it to look even better than Uncharted 4. Rockstar's next(this) gen lighting and animation systems are going to blow minds.

Hi please don't argue with obvious trolls. I got 0 PMs alerting me to this obvious troll. Not happy!

That's still too much for my liking. I'd prefer one trailer only. I miss the glory days on ps1 when we developed our opinion of the game the day we played it, not 6 months/ a year before. I'm on a media blackout (then why are you in the thread etc) and I still catch glimpses of the environment here and there, wish I could avoid that.
