One of the best fakes I've ever seen. Really makes me worry about the world, to be honest, knowing what people with a little skill and a little time could do if they had purposes more malicious than trolling video game fans.

The fact that the leak was a dude from Massive games is true, though, right? I kind of doubt anyone would have the level of foresight to think that Internet detectives would be able to discover his location from the reflection of a tree.

uhh...people took the tree thing seriously?

So this can confirm that Rosti and ShockingAlberto aren't insiders and cannot be trusted?

I dunno about that, I sincerely enjoy reading both guys' posts on GAF, so no ill feelings, but this whole "I know but can't talk", "I kind of know", "a friend of a friend maybe says so", "hexadecimals" stuff is getting kind of tiring. I'd say either say something you know for certain or be quiet.

I thought that once rumor teasing was frowned upon on GAF, now everyone seems fine with it.

We got some real information out of the whole thing.

But then who told him? He also says he was not even able to confirm so to me it just sounds like he knows just as much as we do.

If that is the case, maybe you should refrain from nourishing an insider persona and not post pseudo-encrypted pseudo-insider messages. It makes it seem like you are just looking to generate the very kind of attention that you are rejecting here as harmful.
I will definitely see to methods more fitting intelligent discussions, and less esotericism. Thank you.

Eh never thought Rosti was an insider just someone who does a lot of digging. All of his cryptic post I did not even pay attention to. And the fact that he says it shouldnt be out sounded to me like Nintendo is a bit disgruntled of the fakes but who cares when they wish to withhold the announcement.

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???

Winning tastes good.
lol

I thought it was fake but I'll admit the concept looked so fucking horrible and alienating that it seemed exactly like something Nintendo would try.

Oh and I'll take this opportunity to formally laugh my ass off at people saying they really liked the design....Bwahahaha.

l agree with that. Rösti's contributions with all his unearthing of patents were great, but recently his posts feel like he's typing a lot to say nothing. l understand his position must be pretty uncomfortable, but if he can't say anything because it puts his source at risk then he... shouldn't say anything.

Figured as much. The more convincing second leak merely piggy-backed on the first one.

I was on #TeamFence so I didn't truly win but I'll give myself a pat on the back for not being convinced.

I was so easily swayed haha. Well, it took a while before I started commenting on this as I debated it internally at first. I guess I can throw all those concerns out the window now though. Back to just wondering what NX could be.

People who actually know what is happening behind the scenes keep their mouths shut because they value having a job more than getting their ego stroked on NeoGAF or Reddit. Anyone who blabs and boasts about how much insider info they have are usually talking shit.

Seriously. That is a clown statement. What does that mean you cant confirm it..? Was alan grant on the phone telling you while a dinosaur was chasing him underwater? Give mommy the phone

This is one of the few leaks I am glad to know were completely made up, thank god.

Even then the second one with the tree still looks way to good to be fake haha.

Oftentimes, if not most of the time, legitimate "insiders" are people who have a friend (who has a friend, who has a friend, ...) who works in some gaming-related company and heard some office gossip there. Given that many people in the industry worked for different companies, this creates connections through which legitimate information can leak to the public. And I am sure that there is a lot of legitimate hype and excitement involved, not malicious intent.

However, everybody should realize how inherently unreliable and how impossible to vet such a chain of communication is. The information might go back to a troll, or it might have become massively distorted in a game of telephone, or it might have an element of self-confirmation through hidden feedback loops, etc. For instance, the guy who tweeted that he "had heard" that Nintendo's new controller won't have face buttons might indeed have a legitimate source. But he also might have just heard from somebody, who heard it from somebody, who saw the faked picture. And in the process of playing a game of telephone, "I saw a picture on the internet" became "I heard from a friend in the industry that...".

That's not just a fault of insiders. But everybody else should be aware that "insider information" is inherently unreliable. It's not like we haven't witnessed that fact many times already.

That was a very convincing fake. It's confusing though after all the unsubtle hints people were making from alleged insider information.

Oh well.

Just means in future that there's no point getting wound up by or invested in unsubstantiated rumours. And hopefully people who don't know things won't allude that they do.

Hahaha, motherfucker. And I was just showing this fake controller today to a bunch of people.

I think an amazing turn of events would be if the faker's controller turned out to be 95% accurate to the real deal. Then we'll get a few more amazing threads out of this topic.

If Nintendo has been listening it will be basically a pro controller with analog triggers.

Wouldn't it be amazing if the actual controller turns out to be even more bonkers.

Yup. "Insiders" are often times just starved for attention.

What's even scarier is that his troll may be frighteningly close to the real thing -- it was taken from the prototype submitted to the patent office, in any case.

So I wouldn't say we're out of the woods yet, guys.
