NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

Maybe, I don't know.

On one hand, getting people talking about their next system is great, because it's likely they'll announce it soon and ride that wave of excitement.

On the other hand, I feel like these fakes clearly proved that core gamers are tired of Nintendo's gimmicks, and if they are aiming at a new one this time around, all of this "hate" towards their sense of innovation might very well translate to the new gimmick they found and believe in for this generation.

Yeah, I guess it depends if they plan on showing something similar to this.

But let's remember what Kimishima said. He said this won't be anything like Wii and Wii U and it will be something new. Maybe it will be a traditional controller with scrollable shoulder buttons for the NX controller and then there's the NX handheld which looks more mobilish.

Great response. Judging it based on what tablets and phones have seems a bit silly. Going back and playing DS touch games and yeah there is a huge difference between that and what we have now.
Bring on the NX, hope it is not traditional.
Not traditional would be awesome. Wacky, daring Nintendo is the best Nintendo. The Wii was my favorite system of all time in fact. And Wii U has also been my system of choice this gem.

That said, this fake design really didn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. Some ideas are simply bad.

Like anything..Like the Dual Shock 4 for example, technology evolves. There isn't a defacto design.

But the problem with this is, Nintendo is not the leading edge of this technology. They're not going to beat one of the major tech firms to market with some revolutionary touch screen technology. The tech has to be vetted long before it gets into the hands of a video game console designed with children (and adults) in mind.

This is like saying the DS4 was going to have some revolutionary touch screen in the middle, or that the rear touch on the Vita was going to be some revolutionary design. They weren't.

Nintendo's design might be a novel use of existing technology, but I highly doubt it's going to be some brand new, never before seen touch technology. It's not realistic nor would it likely be cost effective. Their designs always capitalize on refining existing tech, not inventing it. As of right now, I haven't seen any kind of touch technology that would be suited for exclusive control of a game via 'virtual buttons'.

Their streaming tech in the Wii U gamepad was pretty cutting edge wasn't it?

Me too. It's like the best kept secret in gaming right now.
I think we're going to be in for a special treat with the way Nintendo has this locked down. It's the best kept secret which is very hard in today's age and so many people want to know what it is.

I'm so exited and I want it to be E3 already! I want to see the NX and all the games.

I love Nintendo, but I'd still temper my expectations if I were you. Especially the "all the games" part. Look at history.

Sorry i misread your post in my original reply, so i post another one :) . Thats a fair point. Nintendo strike me as a company that are probably more involved in the tech market than people seem to think. Like the way you suggest. They probably play and tinker with everything that is arriving on the market and try to refine existing tech. The likes of tactus or haptics aren't , (well the latter isn't at least) new technologies either, they may have been tinkering and playing with that tech for years and even taking influence from the likes of tactus themselves.

I'm not sure how good the new Apple track pad feels for example but that apparently gives off a satisfying click and response.

Isn't the context dedicated video game consoles/handhelds?

Even then, you can always point to some obscure peripheral from the past as the "first" but what usually counts is the one who popularized it. I.e. the company who got the wheel rolling (in the context of video games), not who invented it. Nintendo is industry leader if you choose to view things this way.

Hope this goes to show one, how bad some people are when it comes to believing rumours (specially if you're a fan) and two, how bad the general population is at knowing what the video game industry us actually up to.

Gotta be more sceptical.

It's fine to think something might be legitimate and real but there were a lot that said this was literally happening and true.

Hah, yeah, we actually make and sell those glasses. I was wondering if I should have them on in the video but decided against it. But you can see them on the laser cutter lid in the video where I put them down :p

That's not edited in? Whaaaaa?

Glad to hear this is fake, hoping it will push GAF to be a little more skeptical with these leaks before freaking out and swearing off Nintendo forever

Would be hilarious if it turns out extremely similar to this design and no buttons, I'll fall out off a chair.

If Wii U gamepad was a tablet with buttons, I think the NX will feature a regular controller (buttons) with a screen in the middle. If that makes sense.

It would be hilarious if these fakes got people to lower their expectations, I imagine whatever happens people will cheer as long as the thing has buttons even if it's a downgrade compared to previous gens.

The threads that came of these were amazing and I'm glad I witnessed them.

Ball is in your court, Nintendo. Show us what you actually got.

Like anything..Like the Dual Shock 4 for example, technology evolves. There isn't a defacto design.

Earlier in the thread i think we started to have a good discussion about the pros and cons of the fake created, I understand why and i have concerns myself about touch buttons, but i'm willing to try what they put out rather than outright dismissing it from the start.

Maybe you do people wrong (at least some of them) if you think they just don't want to try anything new.

I can only speak for myself of course. I was all in for motion controls for example, because it seemed to be an exciting concept. And in the end, it delivered in at least some instances. Its just that in this specific case of the presented NX controller design, I only saw disadvantages, and no advantages at all, even in the optimal case of state-of-the-art tactile feedback. I don't think there's anything wrong with expressing one's discontent in such a case.

(Yet of course the usual "Nintendo is doomed" comments shouldn't be taken seriously as a reaction to some rumour, no question about that.)
