How a Gaffer and his 3D printer trolled the world (2nd NX fake)

This is one of the nicer posts you could expect when calling out that it was 3D printed in that thread.

People even called out that screen as black acrylic.

The nubs were a dead giveaway.

Absolutely great work to the guy that made this. It was so good that anybody who picked up on the flaws was called delusional. 100/100, A+ effort, whatever grading system, excellent job.

I think Mr. Waddles was one of the #teamreal people that were very dick-ish to #teamfake.

It's funny how people said we were so desperate for this to be fake. Now some #teamreal are so desperate for it to be real lol.

Again it's glorious.

Will I be banned if I think another GAFfer should be banned?

Because I think a ban would send a message that it's not necessarily okay to do fake leaks. I mean, yeah, one or two is fun but what if everyone with a 3D printer attempted the same thing? Theoretically, the boards could be flooded with fakes of...everything and anything.

So, perhaps both a temp ban AND a tag are in order. But please, I'm not trying to be a jackass, and if suggesting this is a bannable offense then I'm sorry. Maybe I missed it in the TOS.

Seems pointless. He didn't create the hoax on this site, and he wasn't the one who posted his work here either.

Possibilities of what, two days of e-fame and a GAF thread?

I really don't understand why someone would waste their and everyone else's time with this.

I'll let you in on a secret...
Video games are a waste of time.

So basically "it's hard but not really lol prankz"? Yeah, no. Why not use resources/learned skills to do something that doesn't make you look like a gigantic asshole?

Geez, someone woke up on the wrong side of bed.

when the photoshop came out I was like, they never look like the patents

when this hit though I was like, holy shit it's real

looks like the future has snuck up on me again

bravo sir!

Well played.

I still can't people fell for the concept lol. Nintendo has been pretty clear about tactile input methods.

Saying something should not have been exposed weighs pretty heavily towards confirmation of a real nintendo device, imo.

Yeah but if Rosti knows how even fake leaks like this cause issues then I understand his posts.

I don't know. Believing in insiders is rough to begin with. Rosti doesn't exactly leak anything anyways AFAIK. He just talks about the NDA really. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

You have a god damn Super Saiyan Sonic the Hedgehog as your avatar.

Seriously, considering he's creating something and exercising the use of real world skills, I'd say that making the fake was way more productive and worthwhile as a use of his time than posting on Neogaf is

I'm wondering why someone would go to such lengths to create a fake "leak". What a waste of time.

To get all the praise they are getting right now.

I figured it was fake just by setting it was in. Who leaves confidential stuff this laying around like that?

People are starving for news so much they'll believe anything remotely realistic

Pretty much don't believe anything till it comes from the company itself from now on. 3D printers have ruined early leaks for everyone, GG I guess...

The funny thing about the post is how it neglected sanding, painting, polishing, etc. Yeah, if you just 3D print it and slap it together it will look like crap, but in the hands of someone who knows how to work with that stuff it can look more professionally made.

Nendoroids are even made in 3D printers and look really good.

You've got a 3D printer. You're creative. Why not? You writing this post is also a "waste of time". We're all wasting our time here with hundreds of pages about this speculation.

That was next level trolling, that was commitment and really good crafting skills haha.

So how expensive was that joke, I suppose the 3D printer is from his workplace but are the materials to use it expensive at all?

psh.

It was fun. Even many of the people who believed it was real are in this thread giving the guy kudos because they had fun with it. Everyone had a fun few days dissecting it and reacting to it, making their own mockups, gifs, and jokes. It wasn't just the prankster who enjoyed it, so that hardly makes him an asshole.

Yep, people seemed to forget sandpaper is a thing...

Yup, careful sanding, primer, paint and clear coat and you've got yourself a legit looking prototype.

Not only should the person not get banned (I don't think he broke any GAF rules), but they should be tagged for bringing us the legendary NX thread.

Hats off man. You had me fooled.

Now I'm literally trusting NO leaks from anywhere for anything . I'll just wait for the official announcement.

I feel sorry for the guy who was planning on being the 3rd leaker.

I just imagine some guy working on getting his 3d printer to make it just right, then these guys all give up the jig and hes left there with nothing but a paperweight and no internet karma.

Well done. If you really wanted to put in the effort, you could avoid some of his "tells" that it was fake, or at the very least a lower quality prototype. Airbrushing instead of spray painting with multiple wet sands will make it look much better. Printing molds for the control stick nubs and casting them in rubber. Then of course doing all the super tedious shit he mentioned like screw holes and other real ports like USB C or something pulled out of a real device and put in the 3d print. All of these things though aren't necessarily dead give away that it is a fake. Companies need to prototype early things and 3d printing is way easier than making tooling for injection mold plastics. The fact we never saw it function in real time is the only sure thing. However, in time we will hit that same tipping point where a combination of readily available 3d printing and the next gen of things like after effects could make shit like faking an entire boot up or on screen footage that much easier to fake. I think it is great that people do these fakes. It is an important reminder and also allows people to have discussions with little to no consequence. Let's hope some people at Nintendo read some discussions just in case their concepts are anything like the ones faked. It would be absolutely hilarious if NX ended up in the ballpark of the fake SteWii.

Serves as a reminder to all users and game journalists to really take all leaks and rumors like this with the biggest grain of salt. Absolutely fantastic troll. Wow.

I wasn't sure if it was real, but I thought the notion that some random dude cooked it up on a 3D printer and assembled it was a bit preposterous.

I vastly underestimated how far trolls are willing to go.
