Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

So, i keep crashing whenever i set foot in a FOB.. this is really shit. Some guy stole 4 of my nukes and over 20 staff of mine, and i can't retaliate as i crash everytime.

Dang. I think I'm gonna be pretty immediate with the use of my nuke, once it's developed. After that I'll just steal other people's if I need one. It's been a long wait.

Anyone know how to turn off or turn way down the stupid light bar on the dualshock 4? It blinks bright blue while I'm playing and is incredibly annoying and distracting.

You can dim it in the options menu accessed by holding down the playstation button.

Holy cow this is the PC thread. Whoops.

I haven't used a DS4 on PC since moving to Windows 10, but the app you use to get it working should allow you to do so no?

I can't believe this game runs at almost pretty much constant 60 fps on my brother's old Q6600 @ 3200 + 660 Ti 3 GB (extra-settings) with only 4 GB of ancient DDR2 RAM at 1080p !!! why did I upgrade my system at all ? I guess to play all of the rest non-optimized shitty games. Makes me think of wasted money and wasted silicon.

It's a not great looking cross-gen console game. Why would it stress a pc?

The new update fixes the crazy framerate drops in the helicopter after the Code Talker mission. Theres quite a few small fixes I've noticed. Bummer though that it also fixed the customization bug where you could left click with mouse to apply parts you aren't supposed to!

Just a heads up but Reshade causes crashes in MGSVTPP. Only version that doesn't is the literal very first version, and even then you need to launch in a specific way to make sure it doesn't crash.

Its also really strangely been a huge performance drain, in a way that Reshade typically isn't.

Idk, its hard to recommend right now.

ReShade 0.10.0 (latest version that works with TPP) has had no performance issues for me, though I only use it for a little bit of sharpening to combat FXAA. I do no special tricks to start the game, just hit play from Steam. On my system the only issue is that Alt+Tab crashes the game if ReShade is used.

But yeah, it's not ideal.

Right now the only things I'd like to see are a "skip/speedup helicopter rides" feature and Steam Controller support.

You sure?
The beginning of mission 13 still tanks to hell and back over here, I assumed it was the same issue as the code talker scene since turning off hbao+ fixed both for me.

There was also a nvidia driver update today, that also didn't change anything on my end at least regarding the mission 13 intro.

So I've been playing since launch on PC, about 100 hours in, and was fine with the frame rate I was getting with the default settings-- always above 30, usually in the mid 40s range.

All of a sudden I boot up today and everything is running at a solid 60fps. I haven't changed a single setting, and I haven't upgraded my PC at all. I noticed it in the character loadout screen, then I did an FOB invasion and went to Africa with fraps on and sure enough, it's a consistent 57-60. I was marveling at how smooth the helicopter flight looked.

The only thing I could think of was that they patched the game... but I feel like that doesn't make any sense? I saw something briefly when I logged in today about them fixing some slowdown issues in the menus or something. Maybe an update changed the default settings? Has anyone else had this, um, strange pleasant surprise happen? I haven't noticed a drop in image quality otherwise, at all.

Completely the opposite here. Didn't play for 3 days, came back to see more frame drops together with awful audio errors. When the frames drop, the audio goes all wrong too. I can't really describe it, but it's like this weird digital ugly sounding thing. I didn't anything before I turned down my pc, and just started my pc and started the game again, and since then it hasn't been right since. Framerate is still pretty solid at 60, but these errors are happening especially at the beginning of cut scenes. Anyone encountered the same thing?

Yep I'm sure. At least, it fixed it for the extreme version of the mission.

It is still WAY more demanding than it has any right to be, but I wasn't hitting 4fps, I was hitting like 54fps.

Can you also test the beginning of mission 13?

Does performance seem worse for anyone else since the latest patch? Post-processing at extra high takes gpu usage up by about 25-30% compared to high, and there's more minor drops in general.

Did anyone else's framerate drop massively during the
completed Battle Gear
cutscene?

It seemed to go into single digits for me.

That was literally the only cutscene for me to get (severe) framerate issues.

Cheers guys!

Glad to know I'm not alone.

I thought for a second I had a hardware fault!

Nah, if you watch your GPU usage you'll likely see it drop to single digits if not zero. Interesting watching certain cut scenes running at four frames per seconds.

I'm currently doing another play through of the game this time on PC. I played and finished the game first on PS3. I noticed on the PS3 version that the draw distance of the shadows is very short especially when you're riding a vehicle or D-Horse. It's also very noticeable in Afghanistan that shadows literally fade into the screen.

I can't believe this issue is still existing in the PC version. Is there any way to fix this? I've set the shadow and lighting to high.

You can mod the settings higher yeah.

Anyone else experiencing stuttering while autosaving? No matter what settings (from lowest in 720p to highest in 4k) the game slightly freezes in those moments. PS4 version doesn`t stutter at all while autosaving.
I also noticed some annoying pop ups (distant mountain textures and trees mostly).

Any way to fix those issues?
Help much appreciated! :)

PC: Core i7 5820K, 980TI OC, 16GB RAM

How? I've been searching Google but I couldn't find anything that improves the draw distance.

The very first mod on the Phantom Pain mod Nexus, created by Alo81 himself!

I haven't tried it myself but I always thought it looked like a good mod.

Has anybody tried the current version of The Phantom Pain with the latest release of the AMD Crimson Driver? I usually have everything on max settings (Very High) save for Lighting and Shadows (High) @1366x768 (native monitor res), as it usually provides me with a smooth 60fps. But now it just seems choppy all of a sudden...

Hey guys, anyone have experience running this with a 1GB card? I understood that one should have at least two gigs for a passable performance.

I'm such a casual gamer that I've kept going with my Radeon HD 5870 from, jesus, 2009. It was just like a moment ago that I bought it. I feel old.

I say buy it and refund it if it isn't up to your liking. Thank god for refunds. Also the game runs on PS360... maybe you'll luck out!

Yeah, gonna do that. I saw a video that got my hopes up, although one never knows with these...

https://youtu.be/W_SMyy3I7pI

If it doesn't work I'm just gonna buy a new card.

I have a 1GB GTX 650. I didn't have any problems playing the game, though of course I couldn't turn the graphics settings up too high. At a lower resolution and reasonable settings, I can easily hit 60fps. You'll probably have to sacrifice some frames if you want 1080p, though.

I really want to buy this. But I'm worried about MGO still not being on PC. Should I just buy it on PS4 or get it on Steam? (Mostly game on PC)

If MGO for PC is cancelled that's a perfect reason to use the Steam refund.
I have +50 hours in the game, but if Konami turns and say "Hey guys no more MGO for PC sorry" I'll instantly refund it.

But doesn't the steam refund policy only work if you haven't played a game for more than 2 hours?

I played through the whole game on a 1GB GTX 750. I could run it on mostly high settings, except for textures, anything higher than low gave me loading pauses. I also had to cap it to 30fps since the game rarely achieved 60 fps because I was too limited by my CPU (Core2 Duo E8400), But still while not running like the current console versions, it looked and ran way better than the last-gen versions.

Yes, played it also for a few hours and got a very stable framerate all-around with medium settings and 1080p. It's nice to see that a system this old still holds up perfectly well!

Not too sure about the game, though. The prologue was absolutely ridiculous. :D

Is this another game that doesn't like being capped at anything other than 30 or 60 fps? I'm trying to cap the framerate at 45 fps (G-sync) but it feels like the FOX engine is designed for 30 or 60 fps, nothing else.

Use RTSS (included with MSI afterburner) to cap the game at 45fps.

Edit the game's config located here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\(userid)\287700\local

Make sure your game is set to Fullscreen (not Borderless) and disable V-sync
Open TPP_GRAPHICS_CONFIG in notepad

Edit: "framerate_control" : "Auto"
to
"framerate_control" : "Variable"
Save as read-only

This will ensure your framepacing is optimized when framerate is capped.
Enabling a small amount of motion-blur can also sometimes help give the illusion of smoother frame pacing below 60fps.
