Rumor: Call of Duty 2016 to Be Set in the “Very Far Future,” to Feature Space Combat

Good. Maybe they will have room to explore militaristic themes in a more earnest fashion if they are not tied to current nations or states. The gods know that we don't need another WW2 self-congratulatory safety blanket in the shape of a game.

Activision shooting themselves in the foot with this...Sony shooting themselves with the ps4k...Nintendo releasing an NX with the same concept of the Wii/Wii U (innovation over power)....if all these rumors end being true....we will witness a crash on the industry, ala crash of 83...

I don't want another sci fi CoD tbh, we've got 3 teams for god sake have some variety!

But I still agree here, WW2 is dead and buried and it's never coming back.

Exactly I understand if they don't want to go back to ww2 again, but with three alternating teams, can't ONE of them work on a non-futuristic COD?

I don't get why the shooter genre keeps getting into these funks. There was a time when most of the shooters revolved around WW2, now they can't seem to break out futuristic sci-fi shooters. What the hell happened to variety?

Any remote possibility shinobi and John Harker are talking about the follow up to Extinction, while the campaign and multiplayer pick up where Ghosts left off?

so basically they saw the money star wars is making and thought "how can we get a slice of that pie without having the star wars IP"

hope BF5 is modern day

What do you guys have against WWII. It's been like 10 years since the last one.

I'd love another WW2 COD, but I recognize the limitations of it. Mainly in the sense of streaks and weapon attachments. What I really want is MW4.

Or what about if they really mixed it up with something crazy. Some kind of altered history where there is a mix of WW2 or vietnam, etc. weapons but with modern attachments. A blend of eras. Hell, anything other than another future scifi shooter.

Welp, that killed any and all interest I had left in the series, of which I had little to begin with.

Was really hoping we would ditch the future nonsense and get some semblance of realism in CoD.

Which developer is on this one? I've completely lost track of which is considered "the good one". Stopped playing after MW3 and the crash of the original Infinity Ward.

I am glad to see that they aren't going back to WWII. It's a setting that was done so much for so long. People bring up the "you got tired of WWII, why not get tired of the future stuff?" But the difference is that the future is a hypothetical. It's not bound by any rules or realism. WWII is a real thing that happened, so there's a finite amount of twists and turns you can do with a real frame of time. And between movies and TV and books and games, WWII has been mined to death at this point. Unless it's some Wolfenstein alternate future WWII, which then isn't really WWII at all, then I'm not interested.

There is nothing stopping them from doing alt-history WWII

And it's not like the stories are any special when they are left to their own creativity. At least WWII is authentic. And it's high time we go back.

Not that I trust COD to do it. I'm all hands on Battlefield. I would be very upset if DICE decides to go sci-fi. They can absolutely kickstart the WWII hunger by taking the lead and capitalizing on a starved market.

I just don't get why Activision doesn't go in cycles.

Team 1: Past (WW2, Vietnam)

Team 2: Current (Modern Warfare)

Team 3: Future (Whatever the fuck they want)

It satisfies everyone and prevents market stagnation similar to the original WW2 fad or the current Futuristic fad.

Felt this was coming - not sure what to think until I see it.
Really was hoping for something along the lines of cold war spy v spy type of play with experimental weapons etc. I liked BLOPS 1 for the feel and wished they would have stuck with that for a bit more.

WWII is such a prevalent and common topic through out media for decades. There are millions of movies, books, songs and video games about WWII. There are a lot of different themes they can explore. The future is vague and allows them to be more creative. There are also other wars from the past they could pick from.

Yeah that'd be a good way of going about it. Although I'd be curious how far in the past they'd be willing to go for a CoD game.

Fans: Can we go back to WWII?
Activision: THE KIDS WANT ANOTHER FUTURISTIC SHOOTER!

Those same fans would then turn around and bitch when they realized that WW2 has nothing left to offer this franchise. The same reasons that IW decided to leave it behind still stand.

Wolfenstein disagrees as does that WW2 Kickstarter game and rumors that battlefield may be going back to WW1..I can easily see a resurgence happen. Treyarch could take some of those abilities from BO3 and work them into a World at war game, obviously it wouldn't be historically accurate but that went out the window many games ago

Exactly. It would likely keep everything fresh. But I guess that would make too much sense.

Whatever this year's CoD may be it's going to need to be utterly brilliant to convince me to buy it rather than just keep playing The Division.

You'd have players getting frustrated going from moon bouncing, wall running double jumps to all ground based combat. I think "old COD" is gone forever. Or a really long time. Or Activision is leaving the "ground based FPS" for another title(s) all together?

Boots on the ground CoD is gone until they get a new engine. The types of gameplay innovations necessary to enhance basic traversal, cover, and environmental scenarios is beyond their ID tech frankenstien. Going back to boots on the ground and have it just play like MW would be the death of the series.

lol you forgot what a huge failure VR is going to be as well. Missed one.

you know what Cod really needs? to go back to the year 2005 and fix their netcode.

lol Frustrated? So by that logic, scifi is the only type of shooter that can ever exist again...

No no no. You misunderstand me. I'm simply saying everyone is used to the enhanced movement that has been employed by 90% (making that up) of top multiplayer shooters in the last 2 years.

I can't see anything before "near future" using movement the kids are all accustom to.
